101:3 وماادراك ماالقارعة


TransliterationWama adraka ma alqariAAatu
LiteralAnd what made you know/informed you what the resurrection/disaster/calamity (is)?

Yusuf AliAnd what will explain to thee what the (Day) of Noise and Clamour is?
PickthalAh, what will convey unto thee what the Calamity is!
Arberry And what shall teach thee what is the Clatterer?
ShakirAnd what will make you comprehend what the terrible calamity is?
SarwarWould that you knew what the crash is!
KhalifaKHALIFA:Do you have any idea what the Shocker is?
Hilali/KhanAnd what will make you know what the striking (Hour) is?
H/K/SaheehAnd what can make you know what is the Striking Calamity?
MalikAnd what will explain to you what the Qariah is?[3]
QXPAh, What will convey to you what it is, the Catastrophe!
Maulana AliAnd what will make thee know how terrible is the calamity?
Free MindsAnd how would you know what the Shocker is?
Qaribullah What shall let you know what the Clatterer is!

al-Qari`ah 101:004

101:4 يوم يكون الناس كالفراش المبثوث


TransliterationYawma yakoonu alnnasu kaalfarashi almabthoothi
LiteralA day/time the people be/become like the butterflies, the scattered/ravished

Yusuf Ali(It is) a Day whereon men will be like moths scattered about,
PickthalA day wherein mankind will be as thickly-scattered moths
Arberry The day that men shall be like scattered moths,
ShakirThe day on which men shall be as scattered moths,
SarwarOn that day, people will be like scattered moths
KhalifaThat is the day when the people come out like swarms of butterflies.
Hilali/KhanIt is a Day whereon mankind will be like moths scattered about,
H/K/SaheehIt is the Day when people will be like moths, dispersed,
MalikIt is that Day when men shall be like scattered moths[4]
QXPThe Day when people will be like moths scattered in confusion.
Maulana AliThe day wherein men will be as scattered moths,
Free MindsThe Day when people come out like swarms of butterflies.
Qaribullah On that Day people shall become like scattered moths

George SaleOn that day men shall be like moths scattered abroad,

Asad[It will occur] on the Day when men will be like moths swarming in confusion,



al-Qari`ah 101:005

101:5 وتكون الجبال كالعهن المنفوش


TransliterationWatakoonu aljibalu kaalAAihni almanfooshi
LiteralAnd the mountains be/become like the wool/dyed wool, the carded (ruffled).

Yusuf AliAnd the mountains will be like carded wool.
PickthalAnd the mountains will become as carded wool.
Arberry and the mountains shall be like plucked wool-tufts.
ShakirAnd the mountains shall be as loosened wool.
Sarwarand mountains will be like carded wool.
KhalifaThe mountains will be like fluffy wool.
Hilali/KhanAnd the mountains will be like carded wool,
H/K/SaheehAnd the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up.
Malikand the mountains like colorful carded wool.[5]
QXPAnd the mountains will be like flakes of wool.
Maulana AliAnd the mountains will be as carded wool.
Free MindsAnd the mountains will be like fluffed up wool.
Qaribullah and the mountains like tufts of carded wool.

George Saleand the mountains shall become like carded wool of various colours driven by the wind.
JM RodwellAnd the mountains shall be like flocks of carded wool,

Asadand the mountains will be like fluffy tufts of wool. . . .



al-Qari`ah 101:006

101:6 فاما من ثقلت موازينه


TransliterationFaamma man thaqulat mawazeenuhu
LiteralSo as for who his weights became heavy.

Yusuf AliThen, he whose balance (of good deeds) will be (found) heavy,
PickthalThen, as for him whose scales are heavy (with good works),
Arberry Then he whose deeds weigh heavy in the Balance
ShakirThen as for him whose measure of good deeds is heavy,
SarwarThose whose good deeds will weigh heavier (on the scale)
KhalifaAs for him whose weights are heavy.
Hilali/KhanThen as for him whose balance (of good deeds) will be heavy,
H/K/SaheehThen as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds],
MalikOn that Day, he whose scale of good deeds is heavy,[6]
QXPAnd then, he whose scales are heavy (with good deeds),
Maulana AliThen as for him whose measure (of good deeds) is heavy,
Free MindsAs for him whose weights are heavy.
Qaribullah Then he whose deeds weigh heavy in the Scale

George SaleMoreover he whose balance shall be heavy with good works,
JM RodwellThen as to him whose balances are heavy-

AsadAnd then, he whose weight [of good deeds] is heavy in the balance



al-Qari`ah 101:007

101:7 فهو في عيشة راضية


TransliterationFahuwa fee AAeeshatin radiyatin
LiteralSo he is in (an) acceptable/approved life/quality of life.

Yusuf AliWill be in a life of good pleasure and satisfaction.
PickthalHe will live a pleasant life.
Arberry shall inherit a pleasing life,
ShakirHe shall live a pleasant life.
Sarwarwill live a pleasant life,
KhalifaHe will lead a happy (eternal) life.
Hilali/KhanHe will live a pleasant life (in Paradise).
H/K/SaheehHe will be in a pleasant life.
Malikshall live a pleasant luxurious life.[7]
QXPWill live in happiness and contentment.
Maulana AliHe will live a pleasant life.
Free MindsHe will be in a happy life.
Qaribullah shall live in a life which is pleasing,

George Saleshall lead a pleasing life:
JM Rodwellhis shall be a life that shall please him well:

Asadshall find himself in a happy' state of life;



al-Qari`ah 101:008

101:8 واما من خفت موازينه


TransliterationWaamma man khaffat mawazeenuhu
LiteralAnd but who his weights were reduced/lightened.

Yusuf AliBut he whose balance (of good deeds) will be (found) light,-
PickthalBut as for him whose scales are light,
Arberry but he whose deeds weigh light in the Balance
ShakirAnd as for him whose measure of good deeds is light,
Sarwarbut those whose good deeds will be lighter (on the scale).
KhalifaAs for him whose weights are light.
Hilali/KhanBut as for him whose balance (of good deeds) will be light,
H/K/SaheehBut as for one whose scales are light,
MalikBut he whose scale of good deeds is light[8]
QXPBut as of him whose scales are light,
Maulana AliAnd as for him whose measure (of good deeds) is light,
Free MindsAs for him whose weights are light.
Qaribullah but he whose weight is light in the Scale,

George SaleBut as to him whose balance shall be light,

Asadwhereas he whose weight is light in the balance



al-Qari`ah 101:009

101:9 فامه هاوية


TransliterationFaommuhu hawiyatun
LiteralSo his origin (is) Hell/destruction .

Yusuf AliWill have his home in a (bottomless) Pit.
PickthalA bereft and Hungry One will be his mother,
Arberry shall plunge in the womb of the Pit.
ShakirHis abode shall be the abyss.
Sarwarwill have hawiyah as their dwelling.
KhalifaHis destiny is lowly.
Hilali/KhanHe will have his home in Hawiyah (pit, i.e. Hell).
H/K/SaheehHis refuge will be an abyss.
Malikshall abode in Haviah;[9]
QXPHe will be embraced by an Abyss.
Maulana AliThe abyss is a mother to him.
Free MindsHis destiny is the lowest.
Qaribullah his head will be in the Plunging

George Salehis dwelling shall be the pit of hell.
JM Rodwellhis dwelling-place shall be the pit.

Asadshall be engulfed by an abyss.



al-Qari`ah 101:010

101:10 وماادراك ماهيه


TransliterationWama adraka ma hiyah
LiteralAnd what made you know/informed you what it is (E)?

Yusuf AliAnd what will explain to thee what this is?
PickthalAh, what will convey unto thee what she is! -
Arberry And what shall teach thee what is the Pit?
ShakirAnd what will make you know what it is?
SarwarWould that you knew what hawiya h is?.
KhalifaDo you know what it is?
Hilali/KhanAnd what will make you know what it is?
H/K/SaheehAnd what can make you know what that is?
Malikand what will explain to you, what it (Haviah) is?[10]
QXPAh, what will convey to you what that is!
Maulana AliAnd what will make thee know what that is?
Free MindsAnd how would you know what it is?
Qaribullah What shall let you know what the Plunging is?

George SaleWhat shall make thee to understand how frightful the pit of hell is?
JM RodwellAnd who shall teach thee what the pit (El-Hawiya) is?

AsadAnd what could make thee conceive what that [abyss] will be?



al-Qari`ah 101:011

101:11 نار حامية


TransliterationNarun hamiyatun
Literal(A) hot fire.476

Yusuf Ali(It is) a Fire Blazing fiercely!
PickthalRaging Fire.
Arberry A blazing Fire!
ShakirA burning fire.
SarwarIt is a burning Fire.
KhalifaThe blazing Hellfire.
Hilali/Khan(It is) a hot blazing Fire!
H/K/SaheehIt is a Fire, intensely hot.
MalikIt is a blazing fire.[11]
QXPRaging Fire!
Maulana AliA burning Fire.
Free MindsA blazing Fire.
Qaribullah (It is) a Fire which is extremely hot.

George SaleIt is a burning fire.

AsadA fire hotly burning!
