LiteralAnd We had (E) given/brought to Israel's sons and daughters The Book , and the judgment/rule, and the prophethood, and We provided for them from the goodnesses , and We preferred/favoured them over the creations all together/(universes).

Yusuf AliWe did aforetime grant to the Children of Israel the Book the Power of Command, and Prophethood; We gave them, for Sustenance, things good and pure; and We favoured them above the nations.
PickthalAnd verily we gave the Children of Israel the Scripture and the Command and the Prophethood, and provided them with good things and favoured them above (all) peoples;
Arberry Indeed, We gave the Children of Israel the Book, the Judgment, and the Prophethood, and We provided them with good things, and We preferred them above all beings.
ShakirAnd certainly We gave the Book and the wisdom and the prophecy to the children of Israel, and We gave them of the goodly things, and We made them excel the nations.
SarwarWe gave the Book to the Israelites, the commandments, and prophethood, granted them pure sustenance, and gave them preference above all people.
KhalifaWe have given the Children of Israel the scripture, wisdom, and prophethood, and provided them with good provisions; we bestowed upon them more blessings than any other people.
Hilali/KhanAnd indeed We gave the Children of Israel the Scripture, and the understanding of the Scripture and its laws, and the Prophethood; and provided them with good things, and preferred them above the Alameen (mankind and jinns) (of their time, during that period),
H/K/SaheehAnd We did certainly give the Children of Israel the Scripture and judgement and prophethood, and We provided them with good things and preferred them over the worlds.

LiteralAnd We gave/brought them evidences from the matter/affair/order/command, so they did not differ/disagree/dispute except from after what came to them (from) the knowledge, oppression/transgression between them, that truly your Lord passes judgment/ends between them (on) the Resurrection Day in what they were in it differing/disagreeing .

Yusuf AliAnd We granted them Clear Signs in affairs (of Religion): it was only after knowledge had been granted to them that they fell into schisms, through insolent envy among themselves. Verily thy Lord will judge between them on the Day of Judgment as to those matters in which they set up differences.
PickthalAnd gave them plain commandments. And they differed not until after the knowledge came unto them, through rivalry among themselves. Lo! thy Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that wherein they used to differ.
Arberry We gave them clear signs of the Command; so they differed not, except after the knowledge had come to them, being insolent one to another. Surely thy Lord will decide between them on the Day of Resurrection touching their differences.
ShakirAnd We gave them clear arguments in the affair, but they did not differ until after knowledge had come to them out of envy among themselves; surely your -Lord will judge between them on the day of resurrection concerning that wherein they differed.
SarwarWe also gave them clear evidence in support of the true religion. Only after having received knowledge did they create differences among themselves because of their rebelliousness. Your Lord will issue His decree concerning their differences on the Day of Judgment.
KhalifaWe have given them herein clear commandments. Ironically, they did not dispute this until the knowledge had come to them. This is due to jealousy on their part. Surely, your Lord will judge them on the Day of Resurrection regarding everything they have disputed.
Hilali/KhanAnd gave them clear proofs in matters (by revealing to them the Taurat (Torah)). And they differed not until after the knowledge came to them, through envy among themselves. Verily, Your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection about that wherein they used to differ.
H/K/SaheehAnd We gave them clear proofs of the matter [of religion]. And they did not differ except after knowledge had come to them out of jealous animosity between themselves. Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ.
Malikand gave them clear instructions relating to the matters of religion through revealing to them the Torah. Then they differed among themselves, not because of ignorance but, after the knowledge had come to them, out of envy among themselves. Surely your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning the matters in which they have set up differences.[17]
QXPAnd gave them clear Commandments. Yet, they fell for differences through rivalry among themselves after Knowledge had come to them. Behold, your Lord will judge between them on the Resurrection Day concerning all they differed about.
Maulana AliAnd we gave them clear arguments in the Affair. So they differed not until after knowledge had come to them, out of envy among themselves. Surely thy Lord will judge between them on the day of Resurrection concerning that wherein they differed.
Free MindsAnd We gave them clarity in the matter, but then they disputed after the knowledge had come to them, out of jealousy amongst themselves. Your Lord will judge them on the Day of Resurrection regarding everything that they have disputed.
Qaribullah We gave them clear signs of the Command; yet it was not until after knowledge had come to them that they differed among themselves, and were insolent to each other. On the Day of Resurrection your Lord will indeed decide their differences.

George SaleAnd We gave them plain ordinances concerning the business of religion; neither did they fall to variance, except after that knowledge had come unto them, through envy amongst themselves: But thy Lord will decide the controversy between them, on the day of resurrection, concerning that wherein they disagree.
JM RodwellAnd we gave them clear sanctions for our behests: neither did they differ, through mutual envy, till after they had become possessed of knowledge; but thy Lord will judge between them on the day of resurrection, as to the subject of their disputes.

AsadAnd We gave them clear indications of the purpose [of faith]; [This, I believe, is the meaning of the phrase min al-amr in the above context, although most of the classical commentators are of the opinion that amr signifies here "religion" (din), and interpret the whole phrase, accordingly, as "of what pertains to religion". Since, however, the common denominator in all the possible meanings of the term amr - e.g., "command", "in junction", "ordinance", "matter [of concern]", "event", "action", etc. - is the element of purpose, whether implied or explicit, we may safely assume that this is the meaning of the term in the above elliptic phrase, which obviously alludes to the purpose underlying all divine revelation and, consequently, man's faith in it. Now from the totality of the Quranic teachings it becomes apparent that the innermost purpose of all true faith is, firstly, a realization of the existence of God and of every human being's responsibility to Him; secondly, man's attaining to a consciousness of his own dignity as a positive element - a logically necessary element - in God's plan of creation and, thus, achieving freedom from all manner of superstitions and irrational fears; and, lastly, making man aware that whatever good or evil he does is but done for the benefit, or to the detriment, of his own self (as expressed in verse 15 above).] and it was only after all this knowledge had been vouchsafed to them that they began, out of mutual jealousy, to hold divergent views: [See 23:53 and the corresponding note.] [but,] verily, thy Sustainer will judge between them on Resurrection Day regarding all whereon they were wont to differ. [Lit., "thereafter" or "in the end" (thumma) - i.e., after the failure of the earlier communities to realize the ideal purpose of faith in their actual mode of life.]

Yusuf AliThen We put thee on the (right) Way of Religion: so follow thou that (Way), and follow not the desires of those who know not.
PickthalAnd now have We set thee (O Muhammad) on a clear road of (Our) commandment; so follow it, and follow not the whims of those who know not.
Arberry Then We set thee upon an open way of the Command; therefore follow it, and follow not the caprices of those who do not know.
ShakirThen We have made you follow a course in the affair, therefore follow it, and do not follow the low desires of those who do not know.
SarwarWe have established for you a code of conduct and a religion. Follow it and do not follow the desires of the ignorant people.
KhalifaWe then appointed you to establish the correct laws; you shall follow this, and do not follow the wishes of those who do not know.
Hilali/KhanThen We have put you (O Muhammad SAW) on a plain way of (Our) commandment (like the one which We commanded Our Messengers before you (i.e. legal ways and laws of the Islamic Monotheism)). So follow you that (Islamic Monotheism and its laws), and follow not the desires of those who know not. (Tafsir At-Tabaree Vol. 25, Page 146).
H/K/SaheehThen We put you, [O Muúammad], on an ordained way concerning the matter [of religion]; so follow it and do not follow the inclinations of those who do not know.
MalikO Prophet, We have put you on the Right Way (Shari'ah) concerning the religion, so follow it, and do not yield to the desires of ignorant people;[18]
QXPAnd now We have appointed you (O Messenger) on the Right Way. So follow it, and yield not to the whims of the ignorant. (42:13).
Maulana AliThen We made thee follow a course in the Affair, so follow it, and follow not the low desires of those who know not.
Free MindsThen We have established you on the correct path; so follow it and do not follow the desires of those who do not know.
Qaribullah And now, We have set you on the jurisprudence of the Command, therefore follow it and do not follow the desires of those who do not know.

George SaleAfterwards We appointed thee, O Mohammed, to promulgate a law concerning the business of religion: Wherefore follow the same, and follow not the desires of those who are ignorant.
JM RodwellAfterwards we set thee over our divine law: follow it then: and follow not the wishes of those who have no knowledge,

AsadAnd, finally, [O Muhammad,] We have set thee on a way by which the purpose [of faith] may be fulfilled: [Lit., "on a way of the purpose [of faith]": see note on verse17 above. It is to be borne in mind that the literal meaning of the term shariah is "the way to a watering-place", and since water is indispensable for all organic life, this term has in time come to denote a "system of laws", both moral and practical, which shows man the way towards spiritual fulfillment and social welfare: hence, "religious law" in the widest sense of the term. (See in this connection note on the second part of 5:48.)] so follow thou this [way], and follow not the likes and dislikes of those who do not know [the truth]. [I.e., who are not - or not primarily - motivated by God-consciousness and, hence, are swayed only by what they themselves regard as "right" in accordance with worldly, changing circumstances.]

Bad, indeed, is their judgment: [The meaning is twofold: "that We consider them to be equal with those who...", etc., and "that We shall deal with them in the same manner as We deal with those who...", etc. The reference to the intrinsic difference between these two categories with regard to "their life and their death" points not merely to the moral quality of their worldly existence, but also, on the one hand, to the inner peace and tranquility with which a true believer faces life's tribulations and the moment of death, and on the other, to the nagging anxiety which so often accompanies spiritual nihilism, and the "fear of the unknown" at the time of dying.]
