86:1 سورة الطارق بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ والسماء والطارق


TransliterationWaalssama-i waalttariqi
LiteralAnd/by the sky/space, and/by the Night Comer/star (Morning Star).

Yusuf AliBy the Sky and the Night-Visitant (therein);-
PickthalBy the heaven and the Morning Star
Arberry By heaven and the night-star!
ShakirI swear by the heaven and the comer by night;
SarwarBy the heavens and al-tariq.
KhalifaBy the sky and Al-Taareq.
Hilali/KhanBy the heaven, and At-Tariq (the night-comer, i.e. the bright star);
H/K/SaheehBy the sky and the night comer
MalikBy the heaven and by the morning star (visitant by night) ,[1]
QXPThe sky and the Tariq are witness to what is being said.
Maulana AliBy the heaven and the Comer by night!

at-Tariq 086:002

86:2 وماادراك ماالطارق


TransliterationWama adraka ma alttariqu
LiteralAnd what made you know/informed you what the Night Comer/star (Morning Star is)?

Yusuf AliAnd what will explain to thee what the Night-Visitant is?-
Pickthal- Ah, what will tell thee what the Morning Star is!
Arberry And what shall teach thee what is the night-star?
ShakirAnd what will make you know what the comer by night is?
SarwarDo you know what al-tariq is?.
KhalifaDo you know what Al-Taareq is?
Hilali/KhanAnd what will make you to know what At-Tariq (night-comer) is?
H/K/SaheehAnd what can make you know what is the night comer?
Malikand what will explain to you what the visitant by night is?[2]
QXPAnd what will enlighten you as to what the Tariq is!
Maulana AliAnd what will make thee know what the Comer by night is?

Qaribullah What could let you know what the nightly comer is!

at-Tariq 086:003

86:3 النجم الثاقب


TransliterationAlnnajmu alththaqibu
LiteralThe star/planet, the lit/penetrating .

Yusuf Ali(It is) the Star of piercing brightness;-
Pickthal- The piercing Star!
Arberry The piercing star!
ShakirThe star of piercing brightness;
Sarwar(It is a nightly radiant star).
KhalifaThe bright star.
Hilali/Khan(It is) the star of piercing brightness;
H/K/SaheehIt is the piercing star
MalikIt is the star of piercing brightness.[3]
QXPThe Brightest Star! The noble night-visitant with the Radiant Lamp of the Qur'an in his hand knocking at the doors of minds and hearts, giving Light.

at-Tariq 086:004

86:4 ان كل نفس لما عليها حافظ


TransliterationIn kullu nafsin lamma AAalayha hafithun
LiteralThat truly every/each self (is) except on it a protector/safe keeper .

Yusuf AliThere is no soul but has a protector over it.
PickthalNo human soul but hath a guardian over it.
Arberry Over every soul there is a watcher.
ShakirThere is not a soul but over it is a keeper.
SarwarThere is no soul which is not guarded (by the two angels who record all of its deeds).
KhalifaAbsolutely, everyone is well guarded.
Hilali/KhanThere is no human being but has a protector over him (or her) (i.e. angels incharge of each human being guarding him, writing his good and bad deeds, etc.)
H/K/SaheehThere is no soul but that it has over it a protector.
Malik(Just as Allah Almighty is taking care of each star in the galaxies, similarly) over each soul there is an appointed guardian angel.[4]
QXPThere is no person without a watch being kept over him. (The Law of Requital is ever-vigilant).
Maulana AliThere is not a soul but over it is a keeper.
Free MindsEvery soul has a recorder over it.
Qaribullah For every soul there is a watcher.

George SaleEvery soul hath a guardian set over it.
JM RodwellOver every soul is set a guardian.

Asad[for] no human being has ever been left unguarded.



at-Tariq 086:005

86:5 فلينظر الانسان مم خلق


TransliterationFalyanthuri al-insanu mimma khuliqa
LiteralSo the human/mankind should look/see from what he was created.

Yusuf AliNow let man but think from what he is created!
PickthalSo let man consider from what he is created.
Arberry So let man consider of what he was created;
ShakirSo let man consider of what he is created:
SarwarLet the human being reflect that from what he has been created.
KhalifaLet the human reflect on his creation.
Hilali/KhanSo let man see from what he is created!
H/K/SaheehSo let man observe from what he was created.
MalikLet man consider from what he is created![5]
QXPLet the human being, then, consider out of what he has been created. (And realize the common origin of all mankind. Has there not passed over man an era when he was not even worth mentioning? 76:1)
Maulana AliSo let man consider of what he is created.
Free MindsSo let man see from what he was created.
Qaribullah Let the human reflect of what he is created.

at-Tariq 086:006

86:6 خلق من ماء دافق


TransliterationKhuliqa min ma-in dafiqin
LiteralHe was created from water pouring/flowing forcefully.

Yusuf AliHe is created from a drop emitted-
PickthalHe is created from a gushing fluid
Arberry he was created of gushing water
ShakirHe is created of water pouring forth,
SarwarHe has been created from an ejected drop of fluid
KhalifaHe was created from ejected liquid.
Hilali/KhanHe is created from a water gushing forth
H/K/SaheehHe was created from a fluid, ejected,
MalikHe is created from an emitted fluid[6]
QXPHe has been created from a turbulent water. (21:30), (24:25).
Maulana AliHe is created of water pouring forth,
Free MindsHe was created from water that gushes forth.
Qaribullah He was created from ejaculated water

George SaleHe is created of seed poured forth,

at-Tariq 086:007

86:7 يخرج من بين الصلب والترائب


TransliterationYakhruju min bayni alssulbi waalttara-ibi
LiteralIt emerges/appears from between the spine and the rib bones.

Yusuf AliProceeding from between the backbone and the ribs:
PickthalThat issued from between the loins and ribs.
Arberry issuing between the loins and the breast-bones.
ShakirComing from between the back and the ribs.
Sarwarwhich comes out of the loins and ribs.
KhalifaFrom between the spine and the viscera.
Hilali/KhanProceeding from between the back-bone and the ribs,
H/K/SaheehEmerging from between the backbone and the ribs.
Malikthat is produced from between the loins and the ribs.[7]
QXPThat issued from between tough rocks and mingled dust.
Maulana AliComing from between the back and the ribs.

Qaribullah that issues from between the loins and the ribs.

at-Tariq 086:008

86:8 انه على رجعه لقادر


TransliterationInnahu AAala rajAAihi laqadirun
LiteralThat He truly (is) on returning him capable/able (E) .

Yusuf AliSurely (Allah) is able to bring him back (to life)!
PickthalLo! He verily is Able to return him (unto life)
Arberry Surely He is able to bring him back
ShakirMost surely He is able to return him (to life).
SarwarGod has all power to resurrect him.
KhalifaHe is certainly able to resurrect him.
Hilali/KhanVerily, (Allah) is Able to bring him back (to life)!
H/K/SaheehIndeed, Allah, to return him [to life], is Able.
MalikSurely He, the Creator, has the power to bring him back to life,[8]
QXPNow, verily, He (Who has thus created man), is well Able to bring him back.
Maulana AliSurely he is able to return him (to life).

Qaribullah Surely, He is Able to bring him back,

AsadNow, verily, He [who thus creates man in the first instance] is well able to bring him back [to life]



at-Tariq 086:009

86:9 يوم تبلى السرائر


TransliterationYawma tubla alssara-iru
LiteralA day/time the secrets/intentions be tested.

Yusuf AliThe Day that (all) things secret will be tested,
PickthalOn the day when hidden thoughts shall be searched out.
Arberry upon the day when the secrets are tried,
ShakirOn the day when hidden things shall be made manifest,
SarwarOn the day when all secrets will be made public,
KhalifaThe day all secrets become known.
Hilali/KhanThe Day when all the secrets (deeds, prayers, fasting, etc.) will be examined (as to their truth).
H/K/SaheehThe Day when secrets will be put on trial,
Malikon the Day when the hidden secrets will be brought to scrutiny,[9]
QXPOn the Day when all secrets will be disclosed.
Maulana AliOn the day when hidden things are manifested,
Free MindsThe Day when all is revealed.
Qaribullah on the Day when consciences are examined,

George Salethe day whereon all secret thoughts and actions shall be examined into;
JM RodwellOn the day when all secrets shall be searched out,

Asadon the Day when all I secrets will be laid bare,



at-Tariq 086:010

86:10 فماله من قوة ولاناصر


TransliterationFama lahu min quwwatin wala nasirin
LiteralSo (there is) no strength/power, and nor victorior/savior for him.

Yusuf Ali(Man) will have no power, and no helper.
PickthalThen will he have no might nor any helper.
Arberry and he shall have no strength, no helper.
ShakirHe shall have neither strength nor helper.
Sarwarhe will have no power, nor anyone to help him.
KhalifaHe will have no power, nor a helper.
Hilali/KhanThen will (man) have no power, nor any helper.
H/K/SaheehThen man will have no power or any helper.
Malikthen he will have neither power of his own nor any helper to save him from the punishment of Allah.[10]
QXPThen he will have no power, nor a helper.
Maulana AliThen he will have no strength nor helper.
Free MindsThen he will not have any power or victor.
Qaribullah when he will be helpless, with no supporter.

George Saleand he shall have no power to defend himself, nor any protector.
JM RodwellAnd he shall have no other might or helper.

Asadand [man] will have neither strength nor helper!



at-Tariq 086:011

86:11 والسماء ذات الرجع


TransliterationWaalssama-i thati alrrajAAi
LiteralAnd the sky/space that of the rain after rain/benefit .

Yusuf AliBy the Firmament which returns (in its round),
PickthalBy the heaven which giveth the returning rain,
Arberry By heaven of the returning rain,
ShakirI swear by the raingiving heavens,
SarwarBy the rotating heavens
KhalifaBy the sky that returns (the water).
Hilali/KhanBy the sky (having rain clouds) which gives rain, again and again.
H/K/SaheehBy the sky which returns [rain]
MalikBy the sky which sends down rain[11]
QXPWitness is the high atmosphere that keeps returning (its water, gases and other composition).
Maulana AliBy the cloud giving rain,
Free MindsAnd the sky which gives rain.
Qaribullah By the sky with its returning rain,

George SaleBy the heaven which returneth the rain;
JM RodwellI swear by the heaven which accomplisheth its cycle,

AsadConsider the heavens, ever-revolving,



at-Tariq 086:012

86:12 والارض ذات الصدع


TransliterationWaal-ardi thati alssadAAi
LiteralAnd the earth/Planet Earth that of the split/separation/geological rift-fault line .

Yusuf AliAnd by the Earth which opens out (for the gushing of springs or the sprouting of vegetation),-
PickthalAnd the earth which splitteth (with the growth of trees and plants)
Arberry by earth splitting with verdure,
ShakirAnd the earth splitting (with plants);
Sarwarand the replenishing earth,
KhalifaBy the earth that cracks (to grow plants).
Hilali/KhanAnd the earth which splits (with the growth of trees and plants),
H/K/SaheehAnd [by] the earth which cracks open,
Malikand by the earth which is ever bursting with new growth;[12]
QXPAnd witness is the earth which cracks open for springs and plants.
Maulana AliAnd the earth opening (with herbage)!
Free MindsAnd the land with small cracks.
Qaribullah and by the earth bursting with vegetation;

George Saleand by the earth which openeth to let forth vegetables and springs:
JM RodwellAnd by the earth which openeth her bosom,

Asadand the earth, bursting forth with plants!



at-Tariq 086:013

86:13 انه لقول فصل


TransliterationInnahu laqawlun faslun
LiteralThat it truly is a word/statement (of) judgment/partition (decisive).

Yusuf AliBehold this is the Word that distinguishes (Good from Evil):
PickthalLo! this (Qur'an) is a conclusive word,
Arberry surely it is a decisive word;
ShakirMost surely it is a decisive word,
Sarwarthe Quran is the final word,
KhalifaThis is a serious narration.
Hilali/KhanVerily! This (the Quran) is the Word that separates (the truth from falsehood, and commands strict legal laws for mankind to cut the roots of evil).
H/K/SaheehIndeed, the Qurâ an is a decisive statement,
Maliksurely this Qur’an is a decisive word,[13]
QXPBehold, this (Qur'an) is a Conclusive Word. (That can give you a new life. (40:29)).
Maulana AliSurely it is a decisive word,
Free MindsThis is the word that separates matters.
Qaribullah this is indeed a Decisive Word,

George SaleVerily this is a discourse distinguishing good from evil;
JM RodwellThat this Koran is a discriminating discourse,

AsadBEHOLD, this [divine writ] is indeed a word that between truth and falsehood,



at-Tariq 086:014

86:14 وماهو بالهزل


TransliterationWama huwa bialhazli
LiteralAnd it is not with (of) the joke/fun .

Yusuf AliIt is not a thing for amusement.
PickthalIt is no pleasantry.
Arberry it is no merriment.
ShakirAnd it is no joke.
Sarwarand it is certainly not a jest.
KhalifaNot to be taken lightly.
Hilali/KhanAnd it is not a thing for amusement.
H/K/SaheehAnd it is not amusement.
Malikand it is no joke.[14]
QXPIt is not an amusing idle talk.
Maulana AliAnd it is not a joke.
Free MindsAnd it is not a thing for amusement.
Qaribullah it is not a jest.

at-Tariq 086:015

86:15 انهم يكيدون كيدا


TransliterationInnahum yakeedoona kaydan
LiteralThat they truly plot/conspire a plot/conspiracy .

Yusuf AliAs for them, they are but plotting a scheme,
PickthalLo! they plot a plot (against thee, O Muhammad)
Arberry They are devising guile,
ShakirSurely they will make a scheme,
SarwarThey (disbelievers) plot every evil plan,
KhalifaThey plot and scheme.
Hilali/KhanVerily, they are but plotting a plot (against you O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)).
H/K/SaheehIndeed, they are planning a plan,
MalikThese unbelievers of Mecca are plotting a scheme:[15]
QXP(Yet) Behold, they plot and scheme (to refute the Truth (34:33)).
Maulana AliSurely they plan a plan.
Free MindsThey are scheming their schemes.
Qaribullah They are cunningly devising,

George SaleVerily the infidels are laying a plot to frustrate my designs:
JM RodwellThey plot a plot against thee,

AsadBehold, they [who refuse to accept it] devise many a false argument [to disprove its truth];



at-Tariq 086:016

86:16 واكيد كيدا


TransliterationWaakeedu kaydan
LiteralAnd I plot/conspire a plot/conspiracy .

Yusuf AliAnd I am planning a scheme.
PickthalAnd I plot a plot (against them).
Arberry and I am devising guile.
ShakirAnd I (too) will make a scheme.
Sarwarbut I too plan against them.
KhalifaBut so do I.
Hilali/KhanAnd I (too) am planning a plan.
H/K/SaheehBut I am planning a plan.
Malikand I, too, am plotting a scheme.[16]
QXPBut My Law works its own Way.
Maulana AliAnd I plan a plan.
Free MindsAnd I scheme a scheme.
Qaribullah and I am cunningly devising.

George SaleBut I will lay a plot for their ruin.
JM RodwellAnd I will plot a plot against them.

Asadbut I shall bring all their scheming to nought.



at-Tariq 086:017

86:17 فمهل الكافرين امهلهم رويدا


TransliterationFamahhili alkafireena amhilhum ruwaydan
LiteralSo delay/give time (to) the disbelievers, delay them/give them time slowly/gently.

Yusuf AliTherefore grant a delay to the Unbelievers: Give respite to them gently (for awhile).
PickthalSo give a respite to the disbelievers. Deal thou gently with them for a while.
Arberry So respite the unbelievers; delay with them awhile.
ShakirSo grant the unbelievers a respite: let them alone for a
SarwarGive respite to the disbelievers and leave them alone for a while.
KhalifaJust respite the disbelievers a short respite.
Hilali/KhanSo give a respite to the disbelievers. Deal you gently with them for a while.
H/K/SaheehSo allow time for the disbelievers. Leave them awhile.
MalikTherefore, leave the unbelievers alone. Leave them alone for a while.[17]
QXPTherefore give the rejecters some time. Leave them alone for a while.
Maulana AliSo grant the disbelievers a respite -- let them alone for a while.
Free MindsSo respite the rejecters, respite them for a while.
Qaribullah Therefore respite the unbelievers, and delay them for a while.

George SaleWherefore, O prophet, bear with the unbelievers: Let them alone a while.
JM RodwellDeal calmly therefore with the infidels; leave them awhile alone.

AsadLet, then, the deniers of the truth have their will: let them have their will for a little while!
