87:1 سورة الاعلى بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ سبح اسم ربك الاعلى


TransliterationSabbihi isma rabbika al-aAAla
LiteralPraise/glorify your Lord's name the highest/mightiest .

Yusuf AliGlorify the name of thy Guardian-Lord Most High,
PickthalPraise the name of thy Lord the Most High,
Arberry Magnify the Name of thy Lord the Most High
ShakirGlorify the name of your Lord, the Most High,
Sarwar(Muhammad), glorify the Name of your lord, the Most High,.
KhalifaGlorify the name of your Lord, the Most High.
Hilali/KhanGlorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High,
H/K/SaheehExalt the name of your Lord, the Most High,

al-A`la 087:002

87:2 الذي خلق فسوى


TransliterationAllathee khalaqa fasawwa
LiteralWho created, so He straightened.

Yusuf AliWho hath created, and further, given order and proportion;
PickthalWho createth, then disposeth;
Arberry who created and shaped,
ShakirWho creates, then makes complete,
SarwarWho has created (all things) proportionately,
KhalifaHe creates and shapes.
Hilali/KhanWho has created (everything), and then proportioned it;
H/K/SaheehWho created and proportioned
MalikWho has created all things and perfected them.[2]
QXPWho creates and proportions. (So that all things might become what they are meant to be).
Maulana AliWho creates, then makes complete,
Free MindsThe One who created and developed.
Qaribullah who has created and shaped,

George SaleWho hath created, and completely formed his creatures:
JM RodwellWho hath created and balanced all things,

Asadwho creates [every thing], and thereupon forms it in accordance with with what it is meant to be,



al-A`la 087:003

87:3 والذي قدر فهدى


TransliterationWaallathee qaddara fahada
LiteralAnd who predestined/evaluated , so He guided.

Yusuf AliWho hath ordained laws. And granted guidance;
PickthalWho measureth, then guideth;
Arberry who determined and guided,
ShakirAnd Who makes (things) according to a measure, then guides (them to their goal),
Sarwardecreed their destinies, and provided them with guidance.
KhalifaHe designs and guides.
Hilali/KhanAnd Who has measured (preordainments for each and everything even to be blessed or wretched); then guided (i.e. showed mankind the right as well as wrong paths, and guided the animals to pasture);
H/K/SaheehAnd who destined and [then] guided
MalikWho has set their destinies and guided them.[3]
QXPAnd Who appoints due measure and then shows the way (to all things as to their functions).
Maulana AliAnd Who measures, then guides,
Free MindsAnd the One who measured and then guided.
Qaribullah who has ordained and guided,

George SaleAnd Who determineth them to various ends, and directeth them to attain the same;
JM RodwellWho hath fixed their destinies and guideth them,

Asadand who determines the nature [of all that exists], and thereupon guides it [towards its fulfilment],



al-A`la 087:004

87:4 والذي اخرج المرعى


TransliterationWaallathee akhraja almarAAa
LiteralAnd who brought out/made (to) emerge the pasture.

Yusuf AliAnd Who bringeth out the (green and luscious) pasture,
PickthalWho bringeth forth the pasturage,
Arberry who brought forth the pasturage
ShakirAnd Who brings forth herbage,
SarwarIt is He who has caused the grass to grow,
KhalifaHe produces the pasture.
Hilali/KhanAnd Who brings out the pasturage,
H/K/SaheehAnd who brings out the pasture
MalikWho brings forth green pasture,[4]
QXPAnd Who brings forth the lush pasture.
Maulana AliAnd Who brings forth herbage,

al-A`la 087:005

87:5 فجعله غثاء احوى


TransliterationFajaAAalahu ghuthaan ahwa
LiteralSo He made/created it rotten/spoiled (thin and dry) green/red with blackness.

Yusuf AliAnd then doth make it (but) swarthy stubble.
PickthalThen turneth it to russet stubble.
Arberry then made it a blackening wrack.
ShakirThen makes it dried up, dust-colored.
Sarwarthen caused it to wither away.
KhalifaThen turns it into light hay.
Hilali/KhanAnd then makes it dark stubble.
H/K/SaheehAnd [then] makes it black stubble.
Malikthen reduces it to black rubbish.[5]
QXPAnd then turns it into rust-brown residue. (18:45).
Maulana AliThen makes it dried up, dust-coloured.
Free MindsSo He made it dry-up into hay.
Qaribullah then made it dry dark, flaky stubble,

George Saleand afterwards rendereth the same dry stubble of a dusky hue.
JM RodwellAnd reduceth it to dusky stubble.

Asadand thereupon causes it to decay into rust-brown stubble!

87:6 سنقرئك فلا تنسى


TransliterationSanuqri-oka fala tansa
LiteralWe will make you read, so do not forget.

Yusuf AliBy degrees shall We teach thee to declare (the Message), so thou shalt not forget,
PickthalWe shall make thee read (O Muhammad) so that thou shalt not forget
Arberry We shall make thee recite, to forget not
ShakirWe will make you recite so you shall not forget,
SarwarWe shall teach you (the Quran) and you will not forget it
KhalifaWe will recite to you; do not forget.
Hilali/KhanWe shall make you to recite (the Quran), so you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) shall not forget (it),
H/K/SaheehWe will make you recite, [O Muúammad], and you will not forget,
MalikSoon We shall make you recite Our revelations so you shall forget none of them[6]
QXP(O Messenger) We shall teach you thus that you will never forget. (Mankind need Guidance like all things in the Universe do).
Maulana AliWe shall make thee recite so thou shalt not forget --
Free MindsWe will make you study, so do not forget.
Qaribullah We shall make you recite so that you will not forget,

George SaleWe will enable thee to rehearse our revelations; and thou shalt not forget any part thereof,
JM RodwellWe will teach thee to recite the Koran, nor aught shalt thou forget,

AsadWE SHALL teach thee, and thou wilt not forget [aught of what thou art taught],



al-A`la 087:007

87:7 الا ماشاء الله انه يعلم الجهر ومايخفى


TransliterationIlla ma shaa Allahu innahu yaAAlamu aljahra wama yakhfa
LiteralExcept what God willed/wanted/intended, that He truly knows the declared/publicized and what hides.

Yusuf AliExcept as Allah wills: For He knoweth what is manifest and what is hidden.
PickthalSave that which Allah willeth. Lo! He knoweth the disclosed and that which still is hidden;
Arberry save what God wills; surely He knows what is spoken aloud and what is hidden.
ShakirExcept what Allah pleases, surely He knows the manifest, and what is hidden.
Sarwarunless God wills it to be otherwise. He knows all that is made public and all that remains hidden.
KhalifaEverything is in accordance with GOD's will; He knows what is declared, and what is hidden.
Hilali/KhanExcept what Allah, may will, He knows what is apparent and what is hidden.
H/K/SaheehExcept what Allah should will. Indeed, He knows what is declared and what is hidden.
Malikexcept what Allah wills. Surely He knows what is open and what is hidden.[7]
QXPAllah never Wills you to forget (17:86). Behold, He knows the manifest and what is hidden.
Maulana AliExcept what Allah please. Surely He knows the manifest, and what is hidden.
Free MindsExcept for what God wills, He knows what is declared and what is hidden.
Qaribullah except what Allah wills, surely, He knows all that is (spoken) aloud and what is hidden.

George Saleexcept what God shall please; for He knoweth that which is manifest, and that which is hidden.
JM RodwellSave what God pleaseth; for he knoweth alike things manifest and hidden;

Asadsave what God may will [thee to forget] - for, verily, He [alone] knows all that is open to [man's] perception as well as all that is hidden [from it] -:



al-A`la 087:008

87:8 ونيسرك لليسرى


TransliterationWanuyassiruka lilyusra
LiteralAnd We ease you to the ease/prosperity.

Yusuf AliAnd We will make it easy for thee (to follow) the simple (Path).
PickthalAnd We shall ease thy way unto the state of ease.
Arberry We shall ease thee unto the Easing.
ShakirAnd We will make your way smooth to a state of ease.
SarwarWe shall make all your tasks easy.
KhalifaWe will direct you to the easiest path.
Hilali/KhanAnd We shall make easy for you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) the easy way (i.e. the doing of righteous deeds).
H/K/SaheehAnd We will ease you toward ease.
MalikWe shall make it easy for you to follow the easy way.[8]
QXPAnd thus We shall ease your way to the ultimate ease. (To the end that you will establish the Qur'an in the society).
Maulana AliAnd We shall make thy way smooth to a state of ease.
Free MindsAnd We will make easy for you the way.
Qaribullah We shall ease you to the easy.

George SaleAnd We will facilitate unto thee the most easy way.
JM RodwellAnd we will make easy to thee our easy ways.

Asadand [thus] shall We make easy for thee the path towards [ultimate] ease.



al-A`la 087:009

87:9 فذكر ان نفعت الذكرى


TransliterationFathakkir in nafaAAati alththikra
LiteralSo remind if the remembrance/reminder benefited.

Yusuf AliTherefore give admonition in case the admonition profits (the hearer).
PickthalTherefor remind (men), for of use is the reminder.
Arberry Therefore remind, if the Reminder profits,
ShakirTherefore do remind, surely reminding does profit.
SarwarTherefore, keep on preaching as long as it is of benefit.
KhalifaTherefore, you shall remind; perhaps the reminder will benefit.
Hilali/KhanTherefore remind (men) in case the reminder profits (them).
H/K/SaheehSo remind, if the reminder should benefit;
MalikTherefore remind, surely reminder does benefit.[9]
QXPTherefore, keep reminding, for, the Reminder does benefit.
Maulana AliSo remind, reminding indeed profits.
Free MindsSo remind, perhaps the reminder will help.
Qaribullah Therefore remind, if the Reminder benefits,

George SaleWherefore admonish thy people, if thy admonition shall be profitable unto them.
JM RodwellWarn, therefore, for the warning is profitable:

AsadREMIND, THEN, [others of the truth, regardless of] whether this reminding [would seem to] be of use [or not]:



al-A`la 087:010

87:10 سيذكر من يخشى


TransliterationSayaththakkaru man yakhsha
LiteralWho fears will remember/praise/glorify .

Yusuf AliThe admonition will be received by those who fear (Allah):
PickthalHe will heed who feareth,
Arberry and he who fears shall remember,
ShakirHe who fears will mind,
SarwarThose who have fear of God will benefit
KhalifaThe reverent will take heed.
Hilali/KhanThe reminder will be received by him who fears (Allah),
H/K/SaheehHe who fears [Allah] will be reminded.
MalikHe who fears Allah will heed the reminder,[10]
QXP(Behold), he will heed who fears (the consequences of pre-emptive rejection).
Maulana AliHe who fears will mind,
Free MindsHe who is reverent will remember.
Qaribullah and he who fears shall remember,

George SaleWhoso feareth God, he will be admonished:
JM RodwellHe that feareth God will receive the warning,-

Asadin mind will keep it he who stands in awe [of God],



al-A`la 087:011

87:11 ويتجنبها الاشقى


TransliterationWayatajannabuha al-ashqa
LiteralAnd the most miserable/unhappy avoids/distances himself from it.

Yusuf AliBut it will be avoided by those most unfortunate ones,
PickthalBut the most hapless will flout it,
Arberry but the most wretched shall flout it,
ShakirAnd the most unfortunate one will avoid it,
Sarwarbut the reprobates will turn away
KhalifaThe wicked will avoid it.
Hilali/KhanBut it will be avoided by the wretched,
H/K/SaheehBut the wretched one will avoid it
Malikand he who is unfortunate will avoid it.[11]
QXPAnd only the unfortunate will stay on the side-lines.
Maulana AliAnd the most unfortunate one will avoid it,
Free MindsAnd he who is wicked will avoid it.
Qaribullah but the most wretched shall avoid it,

George SaleBut the most wretched unbeliever will turn away therefrom;
JM RodwellAnd the most reprobate only will turn aside from it,

Asadbut aloof from it will remain that most hapless wretch -



al-A`la 087:012

87:12 الذي يصلى النار الكبرى


TransliterationAllathee yasla alnnara alkubra
LiteralWho roasts/suffers the fire , the greatest .

Yusuf AliWho will enter the Great Fire,
PickthalHe who will be flung to the great Fire
Arberry even he who shall roast in the Great Fire,
ShakirWho shall enter the great fire;
Sarwarand suffer the heat of the great fire
KhalifaConsequently, he will suffer the great Hellfire.
Hilali/KhanWho will enter the great Fire and made to taste its burning,
H/K/Saheeh[He] who will [enter and] burn in the greatest Fire,
MalikThe one who will avoid, shall burn in the gigantic fire,[12]
QXPHe who will be cast into the great Fire.
Maulana AliWho will burn int he great Fire.
Free MindsHe will enter the great Fire.
Qaribullah who will roast in the Great Fire,

George Salewho shall be cast to be broiled in the greater fire of hell,
JM RodwellWho shall be exposed to the terrible fire,

Asadhe who [in the life to come] shall have to endure the great fire



al-A`la 087:013

87:13 ثم لايموت فيها ولايحيى


TransliterationThumma la yamootu feeha wala yahya
LiteralThen he does not die in it and nor live.

Yusuf AliIn which they will then neither die nor live.
PickthalWherein he will neither die nor live.
Arberry then he shall neither die therein, nor live.
ShakirThen therein he shall neither live nor die.
Sarwarwherein they will neither live nor die.
KhalifaWherein he never dies, nor stays alive.
Hilali/KhanWherein he will neither die (to be in rest) nor live (a good living).
H/K/SaheehNeither dying therein nor living.
Malikwhere he shall neither die nor live.[13]
QXPWherein he neither dies nor lives. Mere survival!
Maulana AliThen therein he will neither live nor die.
Free MindsThen he will neither die in it nor live.
Qaribullah in which he will neither die nor live therein.

George Salewherein he shall not die, neither shall he live.
JM RodwellIn which he shall not die, and shall not live.

Asadwherein he will neither die nor remain alive.



al-A`la 087:014

87:14 قد افلح من تزكى


TransliterationQad aflaha man tazakka
LiteralWho purified/corrected had succeeded/won.

Yusuf AliBut those will prosper who purify themselves,
PickthalHe is successful who groweth,
Arberry Prosperous is he who has cleansed himself,
ShakirHe indeed shall be successful who purifies himself,
SarwarLasting happiness will be for those who purify themselves,
KhalifaSuccessful indeed is the one who redeems his soul.
Hilali/KhanIndeed whosoever purifies himself (by avoiding polytheism and accepting Islamic Monotheism) shall achieve success,
H/K/SaheehHe has certainly succeeded who purifies himself
MalikThe one who will take admonition and purify himself shall be successful,[14]
QXPSuccessful, indeed, is he who primes his 'Self' for development. (Living upright, helping others).
Maulana AliHe indeed is successful who purifies himself,
Free MindsWhosoever develops will succeed.
Qaribullah Prosperous is he who purifies himself,

George SaleNow hath he attained felicity who is purified by faith,
JM RodwellHappy he who is purified by Islam,

AsadTo happiness [in the life to come] will indeed attain he who attains to purity [in this world],



al-A`la 087:015

87:15 وذكر اسم ربه فصلى


TransliterationWathakara isma rabbihi fasalla
LiteralAnd mentioned/remembered his Lord's name, so he prayed.

Yusuf AliAnd glorify the name of their Guardian-Lord, and (lift their hearts) in prayer.
PickthalAnd remembereth the name of his Lord, so prayeth,
Arberry and mentions the Name of his Lord, and prays.
ShakirAnd magnifies the name of his Lord and prays.
Sarwarremember the name of the Lord, and pray to Him.
KhalifaBy remembering the name of his Lord and observing the contact prayers (Salat).
Hilali/KhanAnd remembers (glorifies) the Name of his Lord (worships none but Allah), and prays (five compulsory prayers and Nawafil additional prayers).
H/K/SaheehAnd mentions the name of his Lord and prays.
Malikwho remembers the name of his Lord and prays.[15]
QXPAnd keeps foremost in mind the Name and the Attributes of his Lord and then follows through.
Maulana AliAnd remembers the name of his Lord, then prays.
Free MindsAnd remembers the name of his Lord, and reaches out.
Qaribullah and remembers the Name of his Lord, so he prays.

George Saleand who remembereth the name of his Lord, and prayeth.
JM RodwellAnd who remembereth the name of his Lord and prayeth.

Asadand remembers his Sustainer's name, and prays [unto Him].



al-A`la 087:016

87:16 بل تؤثرون الحياة الدنيا


TransliterationBal tu/thiroona alhayata alddunya
LiteralBut you prefer/choose the life the present/worldly life.

Yusuf AliDay (behold), ye prefer the life of this world;
PickthalBut ye prefer the life of the world
Arberry Nay, but you prefer the present life;
ShakirNay! you prefer the life of this world,
SarwarHowever, (the disbelievers) prefer the worldly life
KhalifaIndeed, you are preoccupied with this first life.
Hilali/KhanNay, you prefer the life of this world;
H/K/SaheehBut you prefer the worldly life,
MalikBut O men! You prefer the life of this world;[16]
QXPBut nay, you prefer the life of this world. (Given to instant gains instead of living upright that ensures success in both lives (2:201), (3:147), (4:134), (7:156), (10:64), (17:72), (28:77), (42:22)).
Maulana AliBut, you prefer the life of this world,
Free MindsNo, you desire the worldly life.
Qaribullah But you prefer the present life,

George SaleBut ye prefer this present life:
JM RodwellBut ye prefer this present life,

AsadBut nay, [O men,] you prefer the life of this world,



al-A`la 087:017

87:17 والاخرة خير وابقى


TransliterationWaal-akhiratu khayrun waabqa
LiteralAnd the end (other life is) better and more lasting (everlasting).

Yusuf AliBut the Hereafter is better and more enduring.
PickthalAlthough the Hereafter is better and more lasting.
Arberry and the world to come is better, and more enduring.
ShakirWhile the hereafter is better and more lasting.
Sarwareven though the life hereafter will be better and will last forever.
KhalifaEven though the Hereafter is far better and everlasting.
Hilali/KhanAlthough the Hereafter is better and more lasting.
H/K/SaheehWhile the Hereafter is better and more enduring.
Malikwhile the Hereafter is better and everlasting.[17]
QXPAlthough the Hereafter is better and more enduring.
Maulana AliWhile the Hereafter is better and more lasting.

87:18 ان هذا لفي الصحف الاولى


TransliterationInna hatha lafee alssuhufi al-oola
LiteralThat truly that (is) in (E) the written pages (Books/Scriptures) the first/beginning.

Yusuf AliAnd this is in the Books of the earliest (Revelation),-
PickthalLo! This is in the former scrolls.
Arberry Surely this is in the ancient scrolls,
ShakirMost surely this is in the earlier scriptures,
SarwarThis is what is written in the ancient heavenly Books,
KhalifaThis is recorded in the earlier teachings.
Hilali/KhanVerily! This is in the former Scriptures,
H/K/SaheehIndeed, this is in the former scriptures,
MalikSurely the same was said in the earlier scriptures;[18]
QXPBehold, this has been said in the former Revelations as well. ('Suhuf' = Scrolls = Revelations).

Yusuf AliThe Books of Abraham and Moses.
PickthalThe Books of Abraham and Moses.
Arberry the scrolls of Abraham and Moses.
ShakirThe scriptures of Ibrahim and Musa.
Sarwarthe Scriptures of Abraham and Moses.
KhalifaThe teachings of Abraham and Moses.
