92:1 سورة الليل بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ والليل اذا يغشى


TransliterationWaallayli itha yaghsha
LiteralAnd/by the night when/if it covers/darkens .

Yusuf AliBy the Night as it conceals (the light);
PickthalBy the night enshrouding
Arberry By the night enshrouding
ShakirI swear by the night when it draws a veil,
SarwarBy the night when it covers the day,
KhalifaBy the night as it covers.
Hilali/KhanBy the night as it envelops;
H/K/SaheehBy the night when it covers
MalikBy the night, when it covers with darkness;[1]
QXPWitness is the Night as it cloaks in darkness.
Maulana AliBy the night when it draws a veil!
Free MindsBy the night when it covers.
Qaribullah By the night, when it envelops,

George SaleBy the night, when it covereth all things with darkness;
JM RodwellBY the NIGHT when she spreads her veil;

AsadCONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness,

92:2 والنهار اذا تجلى


TransliterationWaalnnahari itha tajalla
LiteralAnd/by the daytime when/if it uncovered/shined .

Yusuf AliBy the Day as it appears in glory;
PickthalAnd the day resplendent
Arberry and the day in splendour
ShakirAnd the day when it shines in brightness,
Sarwarby the day when it appears radiant,
KhalifaThe day as it reveals.
Hilali/KhanAnd by the day as it appears in brightness;
H/K/SaheehAnd [by] the day when it appears
Malikand by the day, when it spreads its brightness.[2]
QXPAnd the Day as it shines with splendor.
Maulana AliAnd the day when it shines!
Free MindsAnd the day when it appears.
Qaribullah and by the day when it unveils.

George Saleby the day, when it shineth forth;
JM RodwellBy the Day when it brightly shineth;

Asadand the day as it rises bright!



al-Layl 092:003

92:3 وماخلق الذكر والانثى


TransliterationWama khalaqa alththakara waal-ontha
LiteralAnd/by what (who) created the male and the female.

Yusuf AliBy (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;-
PickthalAnd Him Who hath created male and female,
Arberry and That which created the male and the female,
ShakirAnd the creating of the male and the female,
Sarwarand by that (Power) which created the male and female,
KhalifaAnd Him who created the male and the female.
Hilali/KhanAnd by Him Who created male and female;
H/K/SaheehAnd [by] He who created the male and female,
MalikBy Him who created the male and the female,[3]
QXPWitness is creation of the male and the female.
Maulana AliAnd the creating of the male and the female! --
Free MindsAnd He created the male and female.
Qaribullah And by Who created the male and female,

AsadConsider the creation of the male and the female!



al-Layl 092:004

92:4 ان سعيكم لشتى


TransliterationInna saAAyakum lashatta
LiteralThat truly your striving/endeavor (is) separate/different (E) .

Yusuf AliVerily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse.
PickthalLo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends).
Arberry surely your striving is to diverse ends.
ShakirYour striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends).
Sarwaryou strive in various ways.
KhalifaYour works are of various kinds.
Hilali/KhanCertainly, your efforts and deeds are diverse (different in aims and purposes);
H/K/SaheehIndeed, your efforts are diverse.
Maliksurely your efforts are directed towards various ends.[4]
QXPBehold, your effort is diverse. (Your occupations and earnings are different. Let not this be a cause for division among you).
Maulana AliYour striving is surely (for) diverse (ends).
Free MindsYour works are various.
Qaribullah your striving is indeed to different ends!

George SaleVerily your endeavour is different.
JM RodwellAt different ends truly do ye aim!

AsadVerily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends!



al-Layl 092:005

92:5 فاما من اعطى واتقى


TransliterationFaamma man aAAta waittaqa
LiteralSo but who gave/granted and feared and obeyed.

Yusuf AliSo he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah),
PickthalAs for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah)
Arberry As for him who gives and is godfearing
ShakirThen as for him who gives away and guards (against evil),
SarwarWe shall facilitate the path to bliss
KhalifaAs for him who gives to charity and maintains righteousness.
Hilali/KhanAs for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him,
H/K/SaheehAs for he who gives and fears Allah
MalikSo for him who gives in charity, fears Allah[5]
QXPAnd so, he who gives and walks aright - (92:18-19)
Maulana AliThen as for him who gives and keeps his duty,
Free MindsAs for he who gives and is righteous.
Qaribullah For him that gives and fears (Allah)

George SaleNow whoso is obedient, and feareth God,
JM RodwellBut as to him who giveth alms and feareth God,

AsadThus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God,



al-Layl 092:006

92:6 وصدق بالحسنى


TransliterationWasaddaqa bialhusna
LiteralAnd gave charity/confirmed with the best/most beautiful .

Yusuf AliAnd (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,-
PickthalAnd believeth in goodness;
Arberry and confirms the reward most fair,
ShakirAnd accepts the best,
Sarwarfor those who spend for the cause of God,
KhalifaAnd upholds the scripture.
Hilali/KhanAnd believes in Al-Husna.
H/K/SaheehAnd believes in the best [reward],
Malikand testifies to goodness,[6]
QXPAnd makes his life a manifest image of benevolence -
Maulana AliAnd accepts what is good --
Free MindsAnd trusts in goodness.
Qaribullah and believes in the finest,

George Saleand professeth the truth of that faith which is most excellent;
JM RodwellAnd yieldeth assent to the Good;

Asadand believes in the truth of the ultimate good -



al-Layl 092:007

92:7 فسنيسره لليسرى


TransliterationFasanuyassiruhu lilyusra
LiteralSo We will ease him to the ease/prosperity.

Yusuf AliWe will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss.
PickthalSurely We will ease his way unto the state of ease.
Arberry We shall surely ease him to the Easing.
ShakirWe will facilitate for him the easy end.
Sarwarobserve piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God.
KhalifaWe will direct him towards happiness.
Hilali/KhanWe will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness).
H/K/SaheehWe will ease him toward ease.
MalikWe shall facilitate for him the easy way.[7]
QXPWe will indeed ease his way to the Ultimate Ease.
Maulana AliWe facilitate for him (the way to) ease.
Free MindsWe will make the easy path for him.
Qaribullah We shall surely ease him to the Path of Easing;

George Saleunto him will We facilitate the way to happiness:
JM RodwellTo him will we make easy the path to happiness.

Asadfor him shall We make easy the path towards [ultimate] ease.



al-Layl 092:008

92:8 واما من بخل واستغنى


TransliterationWaamma man bakhila waistaghna
LiteralAnd but who was stingy/miser and sufficed/availed .

Yusuf AliBut he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient,
PickthalBut as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent,
Arberry But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient,
ShakirAnd as for him who is niggardly and considers himself free from need (of Allah),
SarwarBut for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth,.
KhalifaBut he who is stingy, though he is rich.
Hilali/KhanBut he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient .
H/K/SaheehBut as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need
MalikAs for him who is a stingy and considers himself independent of Allah[8]
QXPBut he who withholds and thinks himself self-sufficient becoming careless of others -
Maulana AliAnd as for him who is niggardly and considers himself self-sufficient,
Free MindsAnd as for he who is stingy and holds back.
Qaribullah but for him that is a miser, and sufficed,

George SaleBut whoso shall be covetous, and shall be wholly taken up with this world,
JM RodwellBut as to him who is covetous and bent on riches,

AsadBut as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient,



al-Layl 092:009

92:9 وكذب بالحسنى


TransliterationWakaththaba bialhusna
LiteralAnd lied/denied/falsified with the best/most beautiful .

Yusuf AliAnd gives the lie to the best,-
PickthalAnd disbelieveth in goodness;
Arberry and cries lies to the reward most fair,
ShakirAnd rejects the best,
Sarwarand have no faith in receiving any reward (from God).
KhalifaAnd disbelieves in the scripture.
Hilali/KhanAnd gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote);
H/K/SaheehAnd denies the best [reward],
Malikand rejects the goodness,[9]
QXPAnd makes his life a manifest image of denial of goodness -
Maulana AliAnd rejects what is good --
Free MindsAnd denies goodness.
Qaribullah and he belied the finest

George Saleand shall deny the truth of that which is most excellent;
JM RodwellAnd calleth the Good a lie,

Asadand calls the ultimate good a lie -



al-Layl 092:010

92:10 فسنيسره للعسرى


TransliterationFasanuyassiruhu lilAAusra
LiteralSo We will ease him to the difficulty/hardship .

Yusuf AliWe will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery;
PickthalSurely We will ease his way unto adversity.
Arberry We shall surely ease him to the Hardship;
ShakirWe will facilitate for him the difficult end.
SarwarWe shall facilitate the path to affliction
KhalifaWe will direct him towards misery.
Hilali/KhanWe will make smooth for him the path for evil;
H/K/SaheehWe will ease him toward difficulty.
MalikWe shall facilitate for him the hard way.[10]
QXPWe will indeed ease his way to hardship.
Maulana AliWe facilitate for him (the way to) distress.
Free MindsWe will make the difficult path for him.
Qaribullah We shall surely ease for him the Path of Hardship (the Fire).

George Saleunto him will We facilitate the way to misery;
JM RodwellTo him will we make easy the path to misery:

Asadfor him shall We make easy the path towards hardship:



al-Layl 092:011

92:11 ومايغني عنه ماله اذا تردى


TransliterationWama yughnee AAanhu maluhu itha taradda
LiteralAnd his property/possession/wealth does not enrich/suffice (replace) from him if he fell/was destroyed .

Yusuf AliNor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit).
PickthalHis riches will not save him when he perisheth.
Arberry his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes.
ShakirAnd his wealth will not avail him when he perishes.
Sarwarand their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they face destruction.
KhalifaHis money cannot help him when he falls.
Hilali/KhanAnd what will his wealth benefit him when he goes down (in destruction).
H/K/SaheehAnd what will his wealth avail him when he falls?
MalikJust think! What benefit will he get from his wealth, if he himself is doomed.[11]
QXPAnd what could his wealth avail when he himself falls! (69:28), (111:2).
Maulana AliAnd his wealth will not avail him when he perishes.
Free MindsAnd his wealth will not avail him when he demises.
Qaribullah When he falls (into Hell), his wealth will not help him.

George Saleand his riches shall not profit him, when he shall fall headlong into hell.
JM RodwellAnd what shall his wealth avail him when he goeth down?

Asadand what will his wealth avail him when he goes down [to his grave]?



al-Layl 092:012

92:12 ان علينا للهدى


TransliterationInna AAalayna lalhuda
LiteralThat truly on Us (is) the guidance (E).

Yusuf AliVerily We take upon Ourselves to guide,
PickthalLo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance
Arberry Surely upon Us rests the guidance,
ShakirSurely Ours is it to show the way,
SarwarSurely, in Our hands is guidance,
KhalifaWe provide the guidance.
Hilali/KhanTruly! Ours it is (to give) guidance,
H/K/SaheehIndeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance.
MalikSurely it is for Us to give guidance,[12]
QXPBehold, it is for Us to show you the Way (through this Revelation).
Maulana AliSurely Ours is it to show the way,
Free MindsIt is upon Us to guide.
Qaribullah Indeed, Guidance is Ours,

George SaleVerily unto Us appertaineth the direction of mankind:
JM RodwellTruly man’s guidance is with Us

AsadBEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance;



al-Layl 092:013

92:13 وان لنا للاخرة والاولى


TransliterationWa-inna lana lal-akhirata waal-oola
LiteralAnd that truly for Us (is) the end (other life) (E), and the first/beginning.

Yusuf AliAnd verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning.
PickthalAnd lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former.
Arberry and to Us belong the Last and the First.
ShakirAnd most surely Ours is the hereafter and the former.
Sarwarand to Us belong the hereafter and the worldly life.
KhalifaWe control the Hereafter, as well as this life.
Hilali/KhanAnd truly, unto Us (belong) the last (Hereafter) and the first (this world).
H/K/SaheehAnd indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].
Malikand surely to Us belong the end and the beginning.[13]
QXPAnd behold, unto Us belong the End and the Beginning. (93:4).
Maulana AliAnd surely Ours is the Hereafter and the former.
Free MindsAnd to Us is the end and the beginning.
Qaribullah and to Us belong the Last and the First.

George SaleAnd ours is the life to come, and the present life.
JM RodwellAnd Our’s, the Future and the Past.

Asadand, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]:



al-Layl 092:014

92:14 فانذرتكم نارا تلظى


TransliterationFaanthartukum naran talaththa
LiteralAnd so I warned you/gave you notice (of) a fire blazing/burning/inflaming.

Yusuf AliTherefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely;
PickthalTherefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire
Arberry Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames,
ShakirTherefore I warn you of the fire that flames:
SarwarI have warned you about the fierce blazing fire
KhalifaI have warned you about the blazing Hellfire.
Hilali/KhanTherefore I have warned you of a Fire blazing fiercely (Hell);
H/K/SaheehSo I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing.
MalikTherefore, I warn you of the blazing fire,[14]
QXPAnd so I warn you of a raging Fire.
Maulana AliSo I warn you of the Fire that flames.
Free MindsI have warned you of a Fire that blazes.
Qaribullah I have now warned you of the Blazing Fire,

George SaleWherefore I threaten you with fire which burneth fiercely,
JM RodwellI warn you therefore of the flaming fire;

Asadand so I warn you of the raging fire -



al-Layl 092:015

92:15 لايصلاها الا الاشقى


TransliterationLa yaslaha illa al-ashqa
LiteralNone roasts/suffers it except the most miserable/unhappy.

Yusuf AliNone shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones
PickthalWhich only the most wretched must endure,
Arberry whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted,
ShakirNone shall enter it but the most unhappy,
Sarwarin which no one will suffer forever
KhalifaNone burns therein except the wicked.
Hilali/KhanNone shall enter it save the most wretched,
H/K/SaheehNone will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one.
Malikin which none shall burn except the wretched[15]
QXPWhich only the most unfortunate must endure.
Maulana AliNone will enter it but the most unfortunate,
Free MindsNone shall reach it but the wicked.
Qaribullah in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner,

George Salewhich none shall enter to be burned except the most wretched;
JM RodwellNone shall be cast to it but the most wretched,-

Asad[the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch



al-Layl 092:016

92:16 الذي كذب وتولى


TransliterationAllathee kaththaba watawalla
LiteralWho lied/denied/falsified and turned away.

Yusuf AliWho give the lie to Truth and turn their backs.
PickthalHe who denieth and turneth away.
Arberry even he who cried lies, and turned away;
ShakirWho gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back.
Sarwarexcept the wicked ones who have rejected the (Truth) and have turned away from it.
KhalifaWho disbelieves and turns away.
Hilali/KhanWho denies and turns away.
H/K/SaheehWho had denied and turned away.
Malikwho deny the truth and give no heed.[16]
QXPHe who denies and turns away.
Maulana AliWho rejects (the truth) and turns (his) back.
Free MindsThe one who denies and turns away.
Qaribullah who belied and turned away,

George Salewho shall have disbelieved, and turned back.
JM RodwellWho hath called the truth a lie and turned his back.

Asadwho gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it].



al-Layl 092:017

92:17 وسيجنبها الاتقى


TransliterationWasayujannabuha al-atqa
LiteralAnd the most fearing and obeying will be made to avoid it/be distanced from it.

Yusuf AliBut those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,-
PickthalFar removed from it will be the righteous
Arberry and from which the most godfearing shall be removed,
ShakirAnd away from it shall be kept the one who guards most (against evil),
SarwarThe pious ones who spend for the cause of God
KhalifaAvoiding it will be the righteous.
Hilali/KhanAnd Al-Muttaqoon (the pious and righteous - see V.2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell).
H/K/SaheehBut the righteous one will avoid it
MalikBut the pious shall be kept away from it,[17]
QXPBut far removed from it is he who walks aright.
Maulana AliAnd away from it shall be kept the most faithful to duty,
Free MindsAs for the righteous, he will be spared it.
Qaribullah and from which the cautious shall be distanced.

George SaleBut he who strictly bewareth idolatry and rebellion, shall be removed far from the same;
JM RodwellBut the God-fearing shall escape it,-

AsadFor, distant from it shall remain he who is truly conscious of God:



al-Layl 092:018

92:18 الذي يؤتى ماله يتزكى


TransliterationAllathee yu/tee malahu yatazakka
LiteralWho gives/brings his property/possession/wealth (and) purifies/corrects (himself).

Yusuf AliThose who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification,
PickthalWho giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness).
Arberry even he who gives his wealth. to purify himself
ShakirWho gives away his wealth, purifying himself
Sarwarand purify themselves will be safe from this fire.
KhalifaWho gives from his money to charity.
Hilali/KhanHe who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification,
H/K/Saheeh[He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself
Malikthe one who spends in charity for self-purification,[18]
QXPWho gives his wealth that he may grow in goodness. (9:111).
Maulana AliWho gives his wealth, purifying himself,
Free MindsThe one who gives his money to develop with.
Qaribullah He who gives his wealth to be purified,

George Salewho giveth his substance in alms,
JM RodwellWho giveth away his substance that he may become pure;

Asadhe that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity -



al-Layl 092:019

92:19 ومالاحد عنده من نعمة تجزى


TransliterationWama li-ahadin AAindahu min niAAmatin tujza
LiteralAnd (there) is not to anyone at Him from a blessing/goodness to be rewarded/reimbursed .

Yusuf AliAnd have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return,
PickthalAnd none hath with him any favour for reward,
Arberry and confers no favour on any man for recompense,
ShakirAnd no one has with him any boon for which he should be rewarded,
SarwarThey do not expect any reward
KhalifaSeeking nothing in return.
Hilali/KhanAnd have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return,
H/K/SaheehAnd not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded
Maliknot seeking any favor from anyone for which a reward is expected in return,[19]
QXPNot that he is returning any favors. (76:9).
Maulana AliAnd none has with him any boon for a reward,
Free MindsSeeking nothing in return.
Qaribullah and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense

George Saleand by whom no benefit is bestowed on any, that it may be recompensed,
JM RodwellAnd who offereth not favours to any one for the sake of recompense,

Asadnot as payment for favours received,



al-Layl 092:020

92:20 الا ابتغاء وجه ربه الاعلى


TransliterationIlla ibtighaa wajhi rabbihi al-aAAla
LiteralExcept wishing/desiring his Lord's the highest's/mightiest's/most dignified's face/front (path).

Yusuf AliBut only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High;
PickthalExcept as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High.
Arberry only seeking the Face of his Lord the Most High;
ShakirExcept the seeking of the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High.
Sarwarexcept the pleasure of their Lord, the Most High
KhalifaSeeking only his Lord, the Most High.
Hilali/KhanExcept only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High;
H/K/SaheehBut only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High.
Malikexcept seeking the good pleasure of his Lord, the Most High.[20]
QXPBut only to seek the Approval of his Lord, the Most High.
Maulana AliExcept the seeking of the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High.
Free MindsExcept the face of His Lord, the Most High.
Qaribullah seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High,

George Salebut who bestoweth the same for the sake of his Lord, the most High:
JM RodwellBut only as seeking the face of his Lord the Most High.

Asadbut only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest:



al-Layl 092:021

92:21 ولسوف يرضى


TransliterationWalasawfa yarda
LiteralAnd he/He will/shall (E) accept/approve.

Yusuf AliAnd soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction.
PickthalHe verily will be content.
Arberry and he shall surely be satisfied.
ShakirAnd he shall soon be well-pleased.
Sarwarand the reward (of their Lord) will certainly make them happy.
KhalifaHe will certainly attain salvation.
Hilali/KhanHe surely will be pleased (when he will enter Paradise).
H/K/SaheehAnd he is going to be satisfied.
MalikSuch persons shall soon be well-pleased with Allah.[21]
QXPAnd soon he will be pleased.
Maulana AliAnd he will soon be well-pleased.
Free MindsAnd he will be satisfied.
Qaribullah surely, he shall be satisfied.

George SaleAnd hereafter he shall be well satisfied with his reward.
JM RodwellAnd surely in the end he shall be well content.

Asadand such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased.
