| Transliteration | Faasabahum sayyi-atu ma AAamiloo wahaqa bihim ma kanoo bihi yastahzi-oona |
| Literal | So sins/crimes (of) what they made/did struck/hit them , and what they were with it mocking/making fun (of) surrounded/afflicted with them. |
| Yusuf Ali | But the evil results of their deeds overtook them, and that very (Wrath) at which they had scoffed hemmed them in. |
| Pickthal | So that the evils of what they did smote them, and that which they used to mock surrounded them. |
| Arberry | So the evil things that they wrought. smote them, and they were encompassed by that they mocked at. |
