| Transliteration | Ola-ika allatheena khasiroo anfusahum wadalla AAanhum ma kanoo yaftaroona | 
| Literal | Those are those who lost themselves, and what they were fabricating/cutting and splitting (was) wasted/lost from them. | 
| Yusuf Ali | They are the ones who have lost their own souls: and the (fancies) they invented have left them in the lurch! | 
| Pickthal | Such are they who have lost their souls, and that which they used to invent hath failed them. | 
| Arberry | Those are they that have lost their souls, and that they forged has gone astray from them; |
