| 59:15 كمثل الذين من قبلهم قريبا ذاقوا وبال امرهم ولهم عذاب اليم | |
| Transliteration | Kamathali allatheena min qablihim qareeban thaqoo wabala amrihim walahum AAathabun aleemun |
| Literal | As/like (the) example/proverb, (of) those from before them near/close (shortly), they tasted/experienced their matters'/affair's severity/bad consequences , and for them (is) a painful torture. |
| Yusuf Ali | Like those who lately preceded them, they have tasted the evil result of their conduct; and (in the Hereafter there is) for them a grievous Penalty;- |

But in a wider perspective - strongly suggested by the next two verses - the meaning is general and not restricteed to any particular time or historical occurrence. |
