| Transliteration | Talfahu wujoohahumu alnnaru wahum feeha kalihoona |
| Literal | The fire scorches/burns their faces/fronts, and they are in it gloomy/grim . |
| Yusuf Ali | The Fire will burn their faces, and they will therein grin, with their lips displaced. |
| Pickthal | The fire burneth their faces, and they are glum therein. |
| Arberry | the Fire smiting their faces the while they glower there. |
| Shakir | The fire shall scorch their faces, and they therein shall be in severe affliction. |
