al-Baiyinah 098:001

98:1 سورة البينة بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ لم يكن الذين كفروا من اهل الكتاب والمشركين منفكين حتى تاتيهم البينة


TransliterationLam yakuni allatheena kafaroo min ahli alkitabi waalmushrikeena munfakkeena hatta ta/tiyahumu albayyinatu
LiteralThose who disbelieved from the Book's people and the sharers/takers of partners (with God) were not broken to pieces/separated until the evidence comes to them.

Yusuf AliThose who reject (Truth), among the People of the Book and among the Polytheists, were not going to depart (from their ways) until there should come to them Clear Evidence,-
PickthalThose who disbelieve among the People of the Scripture and the idolaters could not have left off (erring) till the clear proof came unto them,
Arberry The unbelievers of the People of the Book and the idolaters would never leave off; till the Clear Sign came to them,
ShakirThose who disbelieved from among the followers of the Book and the polytheists could not have separated (from the faithful) until there had come to them the clear evidence:
SarwarThe disbelievers among the People of the Book and the pagans disbelieved (in Islam) only after receiving divine testimony:
KhalifaThose who disbelieved among the people of the scripture, as well as the idol worshipers, insist on their ways, despite the proof given to them.
Hilali/KhanThose who disbelieve from among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and among Al-Mushrikoon, were not going to leave (their disbelief) until there came to them clear evidence.
H/K/SaheehThose who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists were not to be parted [from misbelief] until there came to them clear evidence
MalikThose who are unbelievers from among the people of the Book and from the Pagans were not going to desist from their unbelief until the clear proof came to them,[1]
QXPIt is inconceivable that those who are denying the Truth, whether they are among the People of the Scripture or the idolaters, could depart from their ways till the Clear Evidence reaches them. (The Qur'an liberates them from the shackles of their man-made dogmas and brings them from darkness to Light (7:157)).
Maulana AliThose who disbelieve from among the People of the Book and the idolaters could not have been freed till clear evidence came to them --
Free MindsThose who rejected amongst the people of the Scripture and those who set up partners would not leave until proof came to them.
Qaribullah The unbelievers among the People of the Book and the idolaters would never desist until the Clear Proof came to them.

George SaleThe unbelievers among those to whom the scriptures were given, and among the idolaters, did not stagger, until the clear evidence had come unto them:
JM RodwellTHE unbelievers among the people of the Book, and the Polytheists, did not waver, until the CLEAR EVIDENCE had come to them;

AsadIT IS NOT [conceivable] that such as are bent on denying the truth - [be they] from among the followers of earlier revelation or from among those who ascribe divinity to aught beside God 1 - should ever be abandoned [by Him] ere there comes unto them the [full] evidence of the truth:



al-Baiyinah 098:002

98:2 رسول من الله يتلو صحفا مطهرة


TransliterationRasoolun mina Allahi yatloo suhufan mutahharatan
LiteralA messenger from God, he reads/recites/follows purified/cleaned written pages (scriptures) .

Yusuf AliAn messenger from Allah, rehearsing scriptures kept pure and holy:
PickthalA messenger from Allah, reading purified pages
Arberry a Messenger from God, reciting pages purified,
ShakirAn messenger from Allah, reciting pure pages,
Sarwara Messenger (Muhammad) from God, reciting to them parts of the purified,
KhalifaA messenger from GOD is reciting to them sacred instructions.
Hilali/KhanA Messenger (Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) from Allah, reciting (the Quran) purified pages (purified from Al-Batil (falsehood, etc.)).

al-Baiyinah 098:003

98:3 فيها كتب قيمة


TransliterationFeeha kutubun qayyimatun
LiteralIn it (are) straight/valuable Books .

Yusuf AliWherein are laws (or decrees) right and straight.
PickthalContaining correct scriptures.
Arberry therein true Books.
ShakirWherein are all the right ordinances.
Sarwarholy Book which contain eternal laws of guidance.
KhalifaIn them there are valuable teachings.
Hilali/KhanContaining correct and straight laws from Allah.
H/K/SaheehWithin which are correct writings.
Malikcontaining infallible books.[3]
QXPWherein are Authoritative Scriptures.
Maulana AliWherein are (all) right books.
Free MindsIn them are valuable books.
Qaribullah in which there are valuable Books.

JM RodwellNeither were they to whom the Scriptures were given divided into sects, till after this clear evidence had reached them!

Asadwherein there are ordinances of ever-true soundness and clarity.



al-Baiyinah 098:004

98:4 وماتفرق الذين اوتوا الكتاب الا من بعد ماجاءتهم البينة


TransliterationWama tafarraqa allatheena ootoo alkitaba illa min baAAdi ma jaat-humu albayyinatu
LiteralAnd those who were given/brought the Book did not separate except from after what came to them (from) the evidence.

Yusuf AliNor did the People of the Book make schisms, until after there came to them Clear Evidence.
PickthalNor were the People of the Scripture divided until after the clear proof came unto them.
Arberry And they scattered not, those that were given the Book, excepting after the Clear Sign came to them.
ShakirAnd those who were given the Book did not become divided except after clear evidence had come to them.
SarwarNor did the People of the Book disagreed among themselves until after receiving the ancient divine testaments.
KhalifaIn fact, those who received the scripture did not dispute until the proof was given to them.
Hilali/KhanAnd the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) differed not until after there came to them clear evidence. (i.e. Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and whatever was revealed to him).
H/K/SaheehNor did those who were given the Scripture become divided until after there had come to them clear evidence.
MalikThose who were given the Book before this (Qur’an) did not divide into sects until after there came to them a clear proof.[4]
QXPNow the People of the Scripture had divided among themselves even when the Evidence of Truth had already come to them.
Maulana AliNor did those to whom the Book was given become divided till clear evidence came to them.
Free MindsAnd those who had previously received the Scripture did not divide except after the proof came to them.
Qaribullah Those to whom the Book was given did not divide themselves until the Clear Proof came to them.

George SaleNeither were they unto whom the scriptures were given divided among themselves, until after the clear evidence had come unto them.
JM RodwellYet was not aught enjoined on them but to worship God with sincere religion, sound in faith; and to observe prayer and pay the stated alms. For this is true religion.

AsadNow those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime 3 did break up their unity [of faith] after such an evidence of the truth had come to them.



al-Baiyinah 098:005

98:5 وماامروا الا ليعبدوا الله مخلصين له الدين حنفاء ويقيموا الصلاة ويؤتوا الزكاة وذلك دين القيمة


TransliterationWama omiroo illa liyaAAbudoo Allaha mukhliseena lahu alddeena hunafaa wayuqeemoo alssalata wayu/too alzzakata wathalika deenu alqayyimati
LiteralAnd they were not ordered/commanded except to worship God faithful/loyal/devoted to Him (in) the religion (as) submitters/Unifiers of God , and they keep up the prayers, and they give/bring the charity/purification , and that (is) the straight/valuable religion.

Yusuf AliAnd they have been commanded no more than this: To worship Allah, offering Him sincere devotion, being true (in faith); to establish regular prayer; and to practise regular charity; and that is the Religion Right and Straight.
PickthalAnd they are ordered naught else than to serve Allah, keeping religion pure for Him, as men by nature upright, and to establish worship and to pay the poor-due. That is true religion.
Arberry They were commanded only to serve God, making the religion His sincerely, men of pure faith, and to perform the prayer, and pay the alms -- that is the religion of the True.
ShakirAnd they were not enjoined anything except that they should serve Allah, being sincere to Him in obedience, upright, and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, and that is the right religion.
SarwarThey were only commanded to worship God, be uprightly devoted to His religion, steadfast in prayer and pay the zakat. This is truly the eternal religion.
KhalifaAll that was asked of them was to worship GOD, devoting the religion absolutely to Him alone, observe the contact prayers (Salat), and give the obligatory charity (Zakat). Such is the perfect religion.
Hilali/KhanAnd they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allah, and worship none but Him Alone (abstaining from ascribing partners to Him), and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give Zakat: and that is the right religion.
H/K/SaheehAnd they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.
MalikYet they were commanded nothing but to worship Allah, with their sincere devotion to Him, being True in their faith; to establish Salah ( prayers); and to pay Zakah (compulsory charity); and that is the infallible true Religion.[5]
QXPAnd they were commanded no more than to serve Allah, keeping religion pure for Him - turning away from all that is false, as men of reason upright. And to establish the Divine System, and set up the Just Economic Order of Zakat. For, that is the Perfect System of Life.
Maulana AliAnd they are enjoined naught but to serve Allah, being sincere to Him in obedience, upright, and to keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, and that is the right religion.
Free MindsAnd they were not commanded except to serve God and be loyal to His system, monotheists, and hold the contact-method and contribute towards betterment. Such is the valuable system.
Qaribullah Yet they were ordered to worship Allah alone, making the Religion His sincerely, upright, and to establish their prayers and to pay the obligatory charity. That is indeed the Religion of Straightness.

George SaleAnd they were commanded no other in the scriptures than to worship God, exhibiting unto him the pure religion, and being orthodox; and to be constant at prayer, and to give alms: And this is the right religion.
JM RodwellBut the unbelievers among the people of the Book, and among the Polytheists, shall go into the fire of Gehenna to abide therein for aye. Of all creatures are they the worst!

AsadAnd withal, they were not enjoined aught but that they should worship God, sincere in their faith in Him alone, turning away from all that is false; 5 and that they should be constant in prayer; and that they should spend in charity: 6 for this is a moral law endowed with ever-true soundness and clarity.



al-Baiyinah 098:006

98:6 ان الذين كفروا من اهل الكتاب والمشركين في نار جهنم خالدين فيها اولئك هم شر البرية


TransliterationInna allatheena kafaroo min ahli alkitabi waalmushrikeena fee nari jahannama khalideena feeha ola-ika hum sharru albariyyati
LiteralThat truly those who disbelieved from the Book's people and the sharers/takers of partners (with God are) in Hell's fire immortally/eternally in it, those, they are the creation's worst.

Yusuf AliThose who reject (Truth), among the People of the Book and among the Polytheists, will be in Hell-Fire, to dwell therein (for aye). They are the worst of creatures.
PickthalLo! those who disbelieve, among the People of the Scripture and the idolaters, will abide in fire of hell. They are the worst of created beings.
Arberry The unbelievers of the People of the Book and the idolaters shall be in the Fire of Gehenna, therein dwelling forever; those are the worst of creatures.
ShakirSurely those who disbelieve from among the followers of the Book and the polytheists shall be in the fire of hell, abiding therein; they are the worst of men.
SarwarThe disbelievers among the People of the Book and the pagans will dwell forever in hell; they are the worst of all creatures.
KhalifaThose who disbelieved among the people of the scripture, and the idol worshipers, have incurred the fire of Gehenna forever. They are the worst creatures.
Hilali/KhanVerily, those who disbelieve (in the religion of Islam, the Quran and Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) from among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and Al-Mushrikoon will abide in the Fire of Hell. They are the worst of creatures.
H/K/SaheehIndeed, they who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures.
MalikSurely those who disbelieve from among the people of the Book and the Pagans shall be in fire of hell, to dwell therein forever. They are the worst of all creatures.[6]
QXPVerily, those who are bent on denying the Truth, be they among the People of the Scripture or the idol worshipers under any guise, will abide in Hell. They (who see the Truth and then deny it) are the worst of all created beings.
Maulana AliThose who disbelieve from among the People of the Book and the idolaters will be in the Fire of hell, abiding therein. They are the worst of creatures.
Free MindsThose who rejected from the people of the Scripture and those who set up partners are in the fires of Hell abiding therein, those are the worst of creation.
Qaribullah The unbelievers among the People of the Book and the idolaters shall be for ever in the Fire of Gehenna (Hell). They are the worst of all creatures.

George SaleVerily those who believe not, among those who have received the scriptures, and among the idolaters, shall be cast into the fire of hell, to remain therein for ever. These are the worst of creatures.
JM RodwellBut they who believe and do the things that are right-these of all creatures are the best!

AsadVerily, those who [despite all evidence] are bent on denying the truth 8 - [be they] from among the followers of earlier revelation or from among those who ascribe divinity to aught beside God - will find themselves in the fire of hell, therein to abide: they are the worst of all creatures.



al-Baiyinah 098:007

98:7 ان الذين امنوا وعملوا الصالحات اولئك هم خير البرية


TransliterationInna allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati ola-ika hum khayru albariyyati
LiteralThat truly those who believed and made/did the correct/righteous deeds, those, they are the creation's best.

Yusuf AliThose who have faith and do righteous deeds,- they are the best of creatures.
Pickthal(And) lo! those who believe and do good works are the best of created beings.
Arberry But those who believe, and do righteous deeds, those are the best of creatures;
Shakir(As for) those who believe and do good, surely they are the -best of men.
SarwarThe righteously striving believers are the best of all creatures.
KhalifaThose who believed and led a righteous life are the best creatures.
Hilali/KhanVerily, those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah, and in His Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) including all obligations ordered by Islam) and do righteous good deeds, they are the best of creatures.
H/K/SaheehIndeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds those are the best of creatures.
MalikSurely those who believe and do good deeds, are the best of all creatures.[7]
QXPAnd behold, those who have chosen to be graced with belief, and do works that help others - it is they, they who are the best of all created beings.
Maulana AliThose who believe and do good, they are the best of creatures.
Free MindsAs for those who believe and do good works, they are the best of creation.
Qaribullah But those who believe and do good deeds are the best of all creatures.

George SaleBut they who believe, and do good works; these are the best of creatures:
JM RodwellTheir recompense with their Lord shall be gardens of Eden, 'neath which the rivers flow, in which they shall abide for evermore.

Asad[And,] verily, those who have attained to faith, and do righteous deeds - it is they, they who are the best of all creatures.



al-Baiyinah 098:008

98:8 جزاؤهم عند ربهم جنات عدن تجري من تحتها الانهار خالدين فيها ابدا رضي الله عنهم ورضوا عنه ذلك لمن خشي ربه


TransliterationJazaohum AAinda rabbihim jannatu AAadnin tajree min tahtiha al-anharu khalideena feeha abadan radiya Allahu AAanhum waradoo AAanhu thalika liman khashiya rabbahu
LiteralTheir reimbursement (is) at their Lord, treed gardens/paradises (as) eternal residence the rivers/waterways flow from beneath it, immortally/eternally in it (for) ever (E), God accepted/approved on them, and they accepted/approved on Him, that (is) to who feared his Lord.

Yusuf AliTheir reward is with Allah: Gardens of Eternity, beneath which rivers flow; they will dwell therein for ever; Allah well pleased with them, and they with Him: all this for such as fear their Lord and Cherisher.
PickthalTheir reward is with their Lord: Gardens of Eden underneath which rivers flow, wherein they dwell for ever. Allah hath pleasure in them and they have pleasure in Him. This is (in store) for him who feareth his Lord.
Arberry their recompense is with their Lord-Gardens of Eden, underneath which rivers flow, therein dwelling for ever and ever. God is well-pleased with them, and they are well-pleased with Him; that is for him who fears his Lord.
ShakirTheir reward with their Lord is gardens of perpetuity beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein for ever; Allah is well pleased with them and they are well pleased with Him; that is for him who fears his Lord.
SarwarTheir reward from their Lord will be the gardens of Eden wherein streams flow and wherein they will live forever. God will be pleased with them and they will be pleased with Him. This (reward) is for those who fear their Lord.
KhalifaTheir reward at their Lord is the gardens of Eden with flowing streams, wherein they abide forever. GOD is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. Such is the reward for those who reverence their Lord.
Hilali/KhanTheir reward with their Lord is Adn (Eden) Paradise (Gardens of Eternity), underneath which rivers flow, they will abide therein forever, Allah Well-Pleased with them, and they with Him. That is for him who fears his Lord.
H/K/SaheehTheir reward with Allah will be gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, Allah being pleased with them and they with Him. That is for whoever has feared his Lord.
MalikTheir reward with their Lord shall be the gardens of Eden, beneath which rivers flow, to dwell therein forever. Allah shall be well pleased with them and they shall be well pleased with Him. That is for him who fears his Lord.[8]
QXPTheir reward is with their Lord - Gardens of Eden (of perpetual Bliss) underneath which rivers flow - to abide therein forever. Well-pleased is Allah with them and well-pleased are they with Him. All this awaits him who fears his Lord. (Knowing that his Lord's Law of Requital is a rock solid reality, he understands that all actions have their built-in recompense).
Maulana AliTheir reward is with their Lord: Gardens of perpetuity wherein flow rivers, abiding therein for ever. Allah is well pleased with them and they are well pleased with Him. That is for him who fears his Lord.
Free MindsTheir reward with their Lord is the gardens of Eden with rivers flowing beneath them, they abide eternally therein. God is satisfied with them, and they are satisfied with Him. That is for whoever feared His Lord.
Qaribullah Their recompense is with their Lord; Gardens of Eden, underneath which rivers flow, where they shall live for ever. Allah is wellpleased with them, and they are wellpleased with Him. That is for he who fears his Lord!

George SaleTheir reward with their Lord shall be gardens of perpetual abode, through which rivers flow; they shall remain therein for ever. God will be well pleased in them; and they shall be well pleased in him. This is prepared for him who shall fear his Lord.
JM RodwellGod is well pleased in them and they in Him! This, for him who feareth his Lord.

AsadTheir reward [awaits them] with God: gardens of perpetual bliss, through which running waters flow, therein to abide beyond the count of time; well-pleased is God with them, and well-pleased are they with Him: all this awaits him who of his Sustainer stands in awe!
