90:1 سورة البلد بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ لااقسم بهذا البلد |

Literal | I do not swear/make oath with that, the country/land . |

Yusuf Ali | I do call to witness this City;- |
Pickthal | Nay, I swear by this city - |
Arberry | No! I swear by this land, |

Sarwar | I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) |

90:2 وانت حل بهذا البلد |

|
Transliteration | Waanta hillun bihatha albaladi |
Literal | And you are placed in/occupying (residing) at this , the country/land. |

Yusuf Ali | And thou art a freeman of this City;- |
Pickthal | And thou art an indweller of this city - |
Arberry | and thou art a lodger in this land; |
Shakir | And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- |
Sarwar | in which you are now living |
Khalifa | The town where you live. |
Hilali/Khan | And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah) , |
H/K/Saheeh | And you, [O Muúammad], are free of restriction in this city |
Malik | where to assassinate) you (O Muhammad) have been made lawful in this city,[2] |
QXP | The Town where (O Prophet) you have lived. |
Maulana Ali | And thou wilt be made free from obligation in this City -- |

90:3 ووالد وماولد |

Transliteration | Wawalidin wama walada |
Literal | And a father and what he gave birth (to)/procreated. |

Yusuf Ali | And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- |
Pickthal | And the begetter and that which he begat, |
Arberry | by the begetter, and that he begot, |
Shakir | And the begetter and whom he begot. |
Sarwar | or by the great father and his wonderful son (Abraham and Ishmael) |
Khalifa | The begetting and the begotten. |
Hilali/Khan | And by the begetter (i.e. Adam ) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny); |

Malik | And I swear by your father (Adam) and the children he begot (mankind),[3] |
QXP | And where your ancestors have multiplied. (A Sanctuary for peace for everyone). |

90:4 لقد خلقنا الانسان في كبد |

Transliteration | Laqad khalaqna al-insana fee kabadin |
Literal | We had created the human/mankind in hardship . |
|

Yusuf Ali | Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. |
Pickthal | We verily have created man in an atmosphere: |
Arberry | indeed, We created man in trouble. |
Shakir | Certainly We have created man to be in distress. |
Sarwar | that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. |
Khalifa | We created the human being to work hard (to redeem himself). |
Hilali/Khan | Verily, We have created man in toil. |
H/K/Saheeh | We have certainly created man into hardship. |
Malik | certainly We have created man to be in stress.[4] |
QXP | Verily, We have created the human being for hard work. (This is the Town where Abraham and Ishmael labored, and where you began your toil to raise the Name of your Lord (2:125-127)). |
Maulana Ali | We have certainly created man to face difficulties. |

Qaribullah | We created the human in fatigue. |

90:5 ايحسب ان لن يقدر عليه احد |

Literal | Does he think/suppose that no one is capable/over powering on (over) him? |

Yusuf Ali | Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? |
Pickthal | Thinketh he that none hath power over him? |
Arberry | What, does he think none has power over him, |
Shakir | Does he think that no one has power over him? |
Sarwar | Does He think that no one will ever have control over him?. |
Khalifa | Does he think that no one will ever call him to account? |

90:6 يقول اهلكت مالا لبدا |

Transliteration | Yaqoolu ahlaktu malan lubadan |
Literal | He says: "I destroyed/wasted plenty property/possession/wealth." |

Yusuf Ali | He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! |
Pickthal | And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: |
Arberry | saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? |
Shakir | He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. |
Sarwar | (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". |
Khalifa | He boasts, "I spent so much money!" |
Hilali/Khan | He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" |
H/K/Saheeh | He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." |
Malik | He may boast: "I have squandered wealth in abundance!"[6] |
QXP | He keeps boasting, "I have wasted so much wealth!" |
Maulana Ali | He will say: I have wasted much wealth. |
Free Minds | He says: "I spent so much money!" |
Qaribullah | He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth. ' |

90:7 ايحسب ان لم يره احد |

Literal | And We guided him (to) the two paths/good or bad ? |

Pickthal | And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? |
Arberry | and guided him on the two highways? |
Shakir | And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? |
Sarwar | Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil?. |

90:11 فلا اقتحم العقبة |

Transliteration | Fala iqtahama alAAaqabata |
Literal | So he did not rush/force (himself) into the high mountain path/road ? |

Yusuf Ali | But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. |
Pickthal | But he hath not attempted the Ascent - |
Arberry | Yet he has not assaulted the steep; |
Shakir | But he would not attempt the uphill road, |
Sarwar | Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba. |
Khalifa | He should choose the difficult path. |
Hilali/Khan | But he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep. |
H/K/Saheeh | But he has not broken through the difficult pass. |
Malik | Yet he does not attempt to tackle the Aqabah (steep path)![11] |
QXP | But he hardly tries the uphill road, the Ascent. |
Maulana Ali | But he attempts not the uphill road; |
Free Minds | He should choose the difficult path. |
Qaribullah | Yet he has not scaled the height. |

Asad | But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... |
al-Balad 090:012
90:12 وماادراك ماالعقبة |
|
|
Transliteration | Wama adraka ma alAAaqabatu |
Literal | And what made you know/informed you what the high mountain path/road (is) ? |
|
|
Yusuf Ali | And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- |
Pickthal | Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - |
Arberry | and what shall teach thee what is the steep? |
Shakir | And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? |
Sarwar | Would that you knew what Aqaba is! |
Khalifa | Which one is the difficult path? |
Hilali/Khan | And what will make you know the path that is steep? |
H/K/Saheeh | And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? |
Malik | And what will explain to you what the Aqabah is?[12] |
QXP | Ah, what will convey unto you what that Ascent is! |
Maulana Ali | And what will make thee comprehend what the uphill road is? |
Free Minds | Do you know which is the difficult path? |
Qaribullah | What could let you know what the height is! |

al-Balad 090:013
90:13 فك رقبة |
|

Transliteration | Fakku raqabatin |
Literal | Releasing/freeing a neck/person/slave. |
|
|
Yusuf Ali | (It is:) freeing the bondman; |
Pickthal | (It is) to free a slave, |
Arberry | The freeing of a slave, |
Shakir | (It is) the setting free of a slave, |
Sarwar | It is the setting free of a slave |
Khalifa | The freeing of slaves. |
Hilali/Khan | (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) |
H/K/Saheeh | It is the freeing of a slave |
Malik | It is the freeing of a neck (slave) from bondage;[13] |
QXP | - Freeing others from bondage, physical or mental, and from any social, economic or political oppression. (Freeing the neck includes all the above meanings plus striving to establish the Divine System wherein the only Master is Allah's Law). |

Literal | Or feeding in a day/time of hunger/starvation/famine. |

Pickthal | Or some poor wretch in misery, |

90:17 ثم كان من الذين امنوا وتواصوا بالصبر وتواصوا بالمرحمة |

Transliteration | Thumma kana mina allatheena amanoo watawasaw bialssabri watawasaw bialmarhamati |
Literal | Then he was from those who believed and directed/commanded each other with the patience, and directed/commanded each other with the mercy/compassion . |

|
Yusuf Ali | Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. |
Pickthal | And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. |
Arberry | then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. |
Shakir | Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. |
Sarwar | the believers who cooperate with others in patience ( steadfastness) and kindness. |
Khalifa | And being one of those who believe, and exhorting one another to be steadfast, and exhorting one another to be kind. |
Hilali/Khan | Then he became one of those who believed, and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. |
H/K/Saheeh | And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. |
Malik | besides this, he should be of those who believe, enjoin fortitude, encourage kindness and compassion.[17] |
QXP | - And to be of those who have chosen to be graced with belief, and become living reminders of perseverance and living reminders of compassion. |
Maulana Ali | Then he is of those who believe and exhort one another to patience, and exhort one another to mercy. |
Free Minds | Then he has become one of those who have believed, and exhort one another to patience, and exhort one another to kindness. |
Qaribullah | so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. |

George Sale | Whoso doth this, and is one of those who believe, and recommend perseverance unto each other, and recommend mercy unto each other; |
JM Rodwell | These shall be the people of the right hand: |

Asad | and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. |
al-Balad 090:018
90:18 اولئك اصحاب الميمنة |

Transliteration | Ola-ika as-habu almaymanati |
Literal | Those are the blessings'/right's (side's/hand's) owners/friends/company. |
|
|
Yusuf Ali | Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. |
Pickthal | Their place will be on the right hand. |
Arberry | Those are the Companions of the Right Hand. |
Shakir | These are the people of the right hand. |
Sarwar | These are the people of the right hand. |
Khalifa | These have deserved happiness. |
Hilali/Khan | They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), |

Malik | Such are the people of the right hand (going towards paradise).[18] |

90:19 والذين كفروا باياتنا هم اصحاب المشئمة |

Transliteration | Waallatheena kafaroo bi-ayatina hum as-habu almash-amati |
Literal | And those who disbelieved with Our verses/evidences , they are the bad omen's/left side's owners/friends/company. |
|
|
Yusuf Ali | But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. |
Pickthal | But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. |
Arberry | And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand; |
Shakir | And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. |
Sarwar | As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left |
Khalifa | As for those who disbelieved in our revelations, they have incurred misery. |
Hilali/Khan | But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). |
H/K/Saheeh | But they who disbelieved in Our signs those are the companions of the left. |
Malik | But those who disbelieve Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand (going towards hell),[19] |
QXP | And those who deny Our Messages, such are the ones hand in hand with despondence. |
Maulana Ali | And those who disbelieve in Our messages, they are the people of the left hand. |
Free Minds | As for those who rejected Our revelations, they are the people of misery. |
Qaribullah | But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, |

Asad | whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil, |

90:20 عليهم نار مؤصدة |

Transliteration | AAalayhim narun mu/sadatun |
Literal | Stationary/residing fire (is) on them. |
|
|
Yusuf Ali | On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). |
Pickthal | Fire will be an awning over them. |
Arberry | over them is a Fire covered down. |
Shakir | On them is fire closed over. |
Sarwar | who will be engulfed in the fire. |
Khalifa | They will be confined in the Hellfire. |
Hilali/Khan | The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. |
H/K/Saheeh | Over them will be fire closed in. |
Malik | having fire all around them.[20] |
