85:1 سورة البروج بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ والسماء ذات البروج


TransliterationWaalssama-i thati alburooji
LiteralAnd/by the sky/space that of the constellations .

Yusuf AliBy the sky, (displaying) the Zodiacal Signs;
PickthalBy the heaven, holding mansions of the stars,
Arberry By heaven of the constellations,
ShakirI swear by the mansions of the stars,
SarwarBy the heavens with constellations,
KhalifaThe sky and its galaxies.
Hilali/KhanBy the heaven, holding the big stars .
H/K/SaheehBy the sky containing great stars
MalikBy the heaven and its constellations![1]
QXPThe sky full of constellations stands witness.
Maulana AliBy the heaven full of stars!

85:2 واليوم الموعود

LiteralAnd/by the Day the Promised/Resurrection Day.

Yusuf AliBy the promised Day (of Judgment);
PickthalAnd by the Promised Day.
Arberry by the promised day,
ShakirAnd the promised day,
Sarwarby the promised day,
KhalifaThe promised day.
Hilali/KhanAnd by the Promised Day (i.e. the Day of Resurrection);
H/K/SaheehAnd [by] the promised Day
MalikBy the promised Day of Judgment![2]
QXPAnd the Promised Day (when you see the Truth triumph over Falsehood).

al-Buruj 085:003

85:3 وشاهد ومشهود


TransliterationWashahidin wamashhoodin
LiteralAnd/by a witness/testifier and a witnessed (against).

Yusuf AliBy one that witnesses, and the subject of the witness;-
PickthalAnd by the witness and that whereunto he beareth testimony,
Arberry by the witness and the witnessed,
ShakirAnd the bearer of witness and those against whom the witness is borne.
Sarwarand by the witness (Muhammad) and that which is witnessed (the Day of Judgment),
KhalifaThe witness and the witnessed.
Hilali/KhanAnd by the witnessing day (i.e. Friday), and by the witnessed day (i.e. the day of Arafat (Hajj) the ninth of Dhul-Heejjah);
H/K/SaheehAnd [by] the witness and what is witnessed,
MalikBy the witnesses and that which is being witnessed![3]
QXPAnd He Who watches, and that which is being watched (will see that),
Maulana AliAnd the bearer of witness and that to which witness is borne!

al-Buruj 085:004

85:4 قتل اصحاب الاخدود


TransliterationQutila as-habu alukhdoodi
LiteralThe geological rift's-fault line's owners/company/friends were killed.

Yusuf AliWoe to the makers of the pit (of fire),
Pickthal(Self-)destroyed were the owners of the ditch
Arberry slain were the Men of the Pit,
ShakirCursed be the makers of the pit,
Sarwarmay the people be condemned those who tortured (the believers) in ditches
KhalifaWoe to the people of the canyon.
Hilali/KhanCursed were the people of the ditch (the story of the Boy and the King).
H/K/SaheehCursed were the companions of the trench
MalikDoomed be the makers of the ditch,[4]
QXPDestroy themselves all those who dig ditches for others.
Maulana AliDestruction overtake the companions of the trench! --

al-Buruj 085:005

85:5 النار ذات الوقود


TransliterationAlnnari thati alwaqoodi
LiteralThe fire , that of the fuel.

Yusuf AliFire supplied (abundantly) with fuel:
PickthalOf the fuel-fed fire,
Arberry the fire abounding in fuel,
ShakirOf the fire (kept burning) with fuel,
Sarwarby a burning fire
KhalifaThey ignited a blazing fire.
Hilali/KhanFire supplied (abundantly) with fuel,
H/K/Saheeh[Containing] the fire full of fuel,
Malikwho lit the fuel-fed fire[5]
QXPIgniting the fire of rage.

al-Buruj 085:006

85:6 اذ هم عليها قعود


TransliterationIth hum AAalayha quAAoodun
LiteralWhen they are on it sitting/remaining.

Yusuf AliBehold! they sat over against the (fire),
PickthalWhen they sat by it,
Arberry when they were seated over it
ShakirWhen they sat by it,
Sarwarwhile they themselves sat around it
KhalifaThen sat around it.
Hilali/KhanWhen they sat by it (fire),
H/K/SaheehWhen they were sitting near it
Malikand sat around it,[6]
QXPBehold, they contemplate and wait in anticipation.

85:7 وهم على مايفعلون بالمؤمنين شهود


TransliterationWahum AAala ma yafAAaloona bialmu/mineena shuhoodun
LiteralAnd they are on what they are making/doing with (to) the believers witnessing/testifying.

Yusuf AliAnd they witnessed (all) that they were doing against the Believers.
PickthalAnd were themselves the witnesses of what they did to the believers.
Arberry and were themselves witnesses of what they did with the believers.
ShakirAnd they were witnesses of what they did with the believers.
Sarwarwitnessing what they were doing.
KhalifaTo watch the burning of the believers.
Hilali/KhanAnd they witnessed what they were doing against the believers (i.e. burning them).
H/K/SaheehAnd they, to what they were doing against the believers, were witnesses.
Malikto watch what they were doing to the believers.[7]
QXPAnd they are well aware of what they are doing to the believers.
Maulana AliAnd they are witnesses of what they do with the believers.
Free MindsAnd they were witness to what they did to the believers.

al-Buruj 085:008

85:8 ومانقموا منهم الا ان يؤمنوا بالله العزيز الحميد


TransliterationWama naqamoo minhum illa an yu/minoo biAllahi alAAazeezi alhameedi
LiteralAnd they did not revenge/punish from them except (because) that (E) they believe with (in) God, the glorious/mighty , the praiseworthy/commendable.

Yusuf AliAnd they ill-treated them for no other reason than that they believed in Allah, Exalted in Power, Worthy of all Praise!-
PickthalThey had naught against them save that they believed in Allah, the Mighty, the Owner of Praise,
Arberry They took revenge on them only because they believed in the All-mighty, the Al-laudable,
ShakirAnd they did not take vengeance on them for aught except that they believed in Allah, the Mighty, the Praised,
SarwarThe only reason for which they tormented the believers was the latter's belief in God, the Majestic, and Praiseworthy.
KhalifaThey hated them for no other reason than believing in GOD, the Almighty, the Praiseworthy.
Hilali/KhanThey had nothing against them, except that they believed in Allah, the All-Mighty, Worthy of all Praise!
H/K/SaheehAnd they resented them not except because they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy,
MalikThey tortured them for no other reason than that they believed in Allah, the All-Mighty, the Praise Worthy,[8]
QXPWhom they hate for no other reason than that they believe in Allah, the Almighty, the Owner of Praise.(5:59), (22:40).
Maulana AliAnd they punished them for naught but that they believed in Allah, the Mighty, the Praised,
Free MindsAnd all they had asked them was to believe in God, the Noble, the Praiseworthy!
Qaribullah and their revenge on them was only because they believed in Allah, the Almighty, the Praised,

George SaleAnd they afflicted them for no other reason, but because they believed in the mighty, the glorious God,
JM RodwellNor did they torment them but for their faith in God, the Mighty, the Praiseworthy:

Asadwhom they hate for no other reason than that they believe in God, the Almighty, the One to whom all praise is due,



al-Buruj 085:009

85:9 الذي له ملك السماوات والارض والله على كل شئ شهيد


TransliterationAllathee lahu mulku alssamawati waal-ardi waAllahu AAala kulli shay-in shaheedun
LiteralWho for Him (is) the skies'/space's and the earth's/Planet Earth's ownership/kingdom , and God (is) on every thing witnessing .

Yusuf AliHim to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth! And Allah is Witness to all things.
PickthalHim unto Whom belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is of all things the Witness.
Arberry God to whom belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and God is Witness over everything.
ShakirWhose is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is a Witness of all things.
Sarwarand the One to whom belongs the heavens and the earth. God is the Witness of all things.
KhalifaTo Him belongs the kingship of the heavens and the earth. And GOD witnesses all things.
Hilali/KhanWho, to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth! And Allah is Witness over everything.
H/K/SaheehTo whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And Allah, over all things, is Witness.
Malikthe One to Whom belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and earth, and Allah is Witness to all things.[9]
QXPAnd to Whom belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth. But Allah is Watcher over all things.
Maulana AliWhose is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is Witness of all things.
Free MindsThe One to whom belongs kingship of heavens and Earth, and God is witness over everything.
Qaribullah to whom belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and earth. And Allah is the Witness of all things.

George Saleunto whom belongeth the kingdom of heaven and earth: And God is witness of all things.
JM RodwellHis the kingdom of the Heavens and of the Earth; and God is the witness of everything.

Asad[and] to whom the dominion of the heavens and the earth belongs. But God is witness unto everything!



al-Buruj 085:010

85:10 ان الذين فتنوا المؤمنين والمؤمنات ثم لم يتوبوا فلهم عذاب جهنم ولهم عذاب الحريق


TransliterationInna allatheena fatanoo almu/mineena waalmu/minati thumma lam yatooboo falahum AAathabu jahannama walahum AAathabu alhareeqi
LiteralThat truly those who tortured/betrayed/allured the believers (M) and the believers (F), then they did not repent, so for them (is) Hell's torture, and for them (is) the burning's torture.

Yusuf AliThose who persecute (or draw into temptation) the Believers, men and women, and do not turn in repentance, will have the Penalty of Hell: They will have the Penalty of the Burning Fire.
PickthalLo! they who persecute believing men and believing women and repent not, theirs verily will be the doom of hell, and theirs the doom of burning.
Arberry Those who persecute the believers, men and women, and then have not repented, there awaits them the chastisement of Gehenna, and there awaits them the chastisement of the burning.
ShakirSurely (as for) those who persecute the believing men and the believing women, then do not repent, they shall have the chastisement of hell, and they shall have the chastisement of burning.
SarwarThose who persecute the believing men and women without repenting will suffer the torment of hell and that of the burning fire.
KhalifaSurely, those who persecute the believing men and women, then fail to repent, have incurred the retribution of Gehenna; they have incurred the retribution of burning.
Hilali/KhanVerily, those who put into trial the believing men and believing women (by torturing them and burning them), and then do not turn in repentance, (to Allah), will have the torment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the burning Fire.
H/K/SaheehIndeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire.
MalikThose who persecute the believing men and believing women and do not repent, shall receive the punishment of hell, wherein they shall have the punishment of conflagration.[10]
QXPBehold, those who persecute the believing men and the believing women, and then repent not, theirs, verily, is the doom of Hell - yes, theirs is the doom of burning.
Maulana AliThose who persecute believing men and believing women, then repent not, theirs is the chastisement of hell, and theirs the chastisement of burning.
Free MindsThose who have put the believing men and women under ordeal, and then did not repent, they will have the retribution of Hell, and they will have the retribution of burning.
Qaribullah Those who persecuted the believing men and women and never repented, there is for them the punishment of Gehenna (Hell), and for them the punishment of the burning.

George SaleVerily for those who persecute the true believers of either sex, and afterwards repent not, is prepared the torment of hell; and they shall suffer the pain of burning.
JM RodwellVerily, those who vexed the believers, men and women, and repented not, doth the torment of Hell, and the torment of the burning, await.

AsadVerily, as for those who persecute believing men and believing women, and thereafter do not repent, hell's suffering awaits them: yea, suffering through fire awaits them!



al-Buruj 085:011

85:11 ان الذين امنوا وعملوا الصالحات لهم جنات تجري من تحتها الانهار ذلك الفوز الكبير


TransliterationInna allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati lahum jannatun tajree min tahtiha al-anharu thalika alfawzu alkabeeru
LiteralThat truly those who believed and made/did the correct/righteous deeds, for them (are) treed gardens/paradises the rivers/waterways flow from below it, that is the winning/success , the great .

Yusuf AliFor those who believe and do righteous deeds, will be Gardens; beneath which rivers flow: That is the great Salvation, (the fulfilment of all desires),
PickthalLo! those who believe and do good works, theirs will be Gardens underneath which rivers flow. That is the Great Success.
Arberry Those who believe, and do righteous deeds, for them await gardens underneath which rivers flow; that is the great triumph.
ShakirSurely (as for) those who believe and do good, they shall have gardens beneath which rivers flow, that is the great achievement.
SarwarAs for the righteously striving believers, they will live in Paradise wherein streams flow. This is the greatest triumph.
KhalifaSurely, those who believed and led a righteous life, have deserved gardens with flowing streams. This is the greatest triumph.
Hilali/KhanVerily, those who believe and do righteous good deeds, for them will be Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise). That is the great success.
H/K/SaheehIndeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great attainment.
MalikAs for those who believe and do good deeds, they shall have gardens beneath which rivers flow; which will be the greatest success.[11]
QXPVerily, those who choose to be graced with belief and do actions that help people, theirs are the Gardens underneath which rivers flow. That is the Great Eminence.
Maulana AliThose who believe and do good, theirs are Gardens wherein flow rivers. That is the great achievement.
Free MindsThose who believe and do good works, they will have gardens with rivers flowing beneath. Such is the great reward.
Qaribullah (But) for those who believe and do good works, for them there are Gardens underneath which rivers flow that is the Great Victory!

George SaleBut for those who believe, and do that which is right, are destined gardens beneath which rivers flow: This shall be great felicity.
JM RodwellBut for those who shall have believed and done the things that be right, are the Gardens beneath whose shades the rivers flow. This the immense bliss!

Asad[But,] verily, they who attain to faith and do righteous deeds shall [in the life to come] have gardens through which running waters flow - that triumph most great!



al-Buruj 085:012

85:12 ان بطش ربك لشديد


TransliterationInna batsha rabbika lashadeedun
LiteralThat truly your Lord's violent attack/destruction (is) strong (E) (severe).

Yusuf AliTruly strong is the Grip (and Power) of thy Lord.
PickthalLo! the punishment of thy Lord is stern.
Arberry Surely thy Lord's assault is terrible.
ShakirSurely the might of your Lord is great.
SarwarThe vengeance of God is terribly severe.
KhalifaIndeed, your Lord's blow is severe.
Hilali/KhanVerily, (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) the Grip (Punishment) of your Lord is severe.
H/K/SaheehIndeed, the vengeance of your Lord is severe.
MalikSurely, the seizure of your Lord is very severe.[12]
QXP(Yet) Verily, strong is the Grip of your Lord!
Maulana AliSurely the grip of thy Lord is severe.
Free MindsThe punishment of your Lord is severe.
Qaribullah Indeed, the seizing of your Lord is severe.

George SaleVerily the vengeance of thy Lord is severe.
JM RodwellVerily, right terrible will be thy Lord's vengeance!

AsadVERILY, thy Sustainer's grip is exceedingly strong!



al-Buruj 085:013

85:13 انه هو يبدئ ويعيد


TransliterationInnahu huwa yubdi-o wayuAAeedu
LiteralThat He truly creates/initiates , and returns/repeats .

Yusuf AliIt is He Who creates from the very beginning, and He can restore (life).
PickthalLo! He it is Who produceth, then reproduceth,
Arberry Surely it is He who originates, and brings again,
ShakirSurely He it is Who originates and reproduces,
SarwarIt is He who creates all things and causes them to return.
KhalifaHe is the One who initiates and repeats.
Hilali/KhanVerily, He it is Who begins (punishment) and repeats (punishment in the Hereafter) (or originates the creation of everything, and then repeats it on the Day of Resurrection).
H/K/SaheehIndeed, it is He who originates [creation] and repeats.
MalikSurely, He it is Who originates the creation of everything, and He it is Who will repeat it on the Day of Resurrection.[13]
QXPBehold, He it is Who originates (life) and then makes again and again.
Maulana AliSurely He it is Who creates first and reproduces;
Free MindsIt is He who initiates and then returns.
Qaribullah It is He who originates and repeats.

George SaleHe createth, and He restoreth to life:
JM RodwellHe it is who produceth all things, and causeth them to return;

AsadBehold, it is He who creates [man] in the first instance, and He [it is who] will bring him forth anew.



al-Buruj 085:014

85:14 وهو الغفور الودود


TransliterationWahuwa alghafooru alwadoodu
LiteralAnd He is the forgiving, the loving/affectionate.

Yusuf AliAnd He is the Oft-Forgiving, Full of Loving-Kindness,
PickthalAnd He is the Forgiving, the Loving,
Arberry and He is the All-forgiving, the All-loving,
ShakirAnd He is the Forgiving, the Loving,
SarwarHe is the All-forgiving, the Most Loving One,
KhalifaAnd He is the Forgiving, Most Kind.
Hilali/KhanAnd He is Oft-Forgiving, full of love (towards the pious who are real true believers of Islamic Monotheism),
H/K/SaheehAnd He is the Forgiving, the Affectionate,
MalikHe is the Forgiving, the Loving,[14]
QXPAnd He is the Forgiving, the Loving.
Maulana AliAnd He is the Forgiving, the Loving,

Qaribullah And He is the Forgiving, and the Loving.

al-Buruj 085:015

85:15 ذو العرش المجيد


TransliterationThoo alAAarshi almajeedi
Literal(Owner) of the throne , the most glorious/exacted .

Yusuf AliLord of the Throne of Glory,
PickthalLord of the Throne of Glory,
Arberry Lord of the Throne, the All-glorious,
ShakirLord of the Arsh, the Glorious,
Sarwarthe Owner of the Throne, the Glorious One,
KhalifaPossessor of the glorious throne.
Hilali/KhanOwner of the throne, the Glorious
H/K/SaheehHonorable Owner of the Throne,
Malikthe Owner of the Throne, the Glorious[15]
QXPLord of the Supreme Throne.
Maulana AliLord of the Throne of Power, the Glorious,

Qaribullah Owner of the Throne, the Exalted.

85:16 فعال لما يريد


TransliterationFaAAAAalun lima yureedu
LiteralMaker/doer to what He wills/wants/intends.

Yusuf AliDoer (without let) of all that He intends.
PickthalDoer of what He will.
Arberry Performer of what He desires.
ShakirThe great doer of what He will.
Sarwarand the Most Effective in His decision.
KhalifaDoer of whatever He wills.
Hilali/KhanHe does what He intends (or wills).
H/K/SaheehEffecter of what He intends.
Malikand the executor of His own will.[16]
QXPCarrying out His Plan according to His Laws. ('Fe'l' = Doing = Carrying out. 'Ma Yurid' = As He plans = As He wills = In accordance with His Laws).
Maulana AliDoer of what He intends.

Qaribullah The Doer of whatever He wants.

George Salewho effecteth that which He pleaseth.

al-Buruj 085:017

85:17 هل اتاك حديث الجنود


TransliterationHal ataka hadeethu aljunoodi
LiteralDid the soldiers'/warriors' information/news come to you?

Yusuf AliHas the story reached thee, of the forces-
PickthalHath there come unto thee the story of the hosts
Arberry Hast thou received the story of the hosts,
ShakirHas not there come to you the story of the hosts,
SarwarHave you not heard about the stories of the armies
KhalifaDid you note the history of the troops?
Hilali/KhanHas the story reached you of the hosts,
H/K/SaheehHas there reached you the story of the soldiers
MalikHave you not heard the story of the warriors[17]
QXPHas the story reached you of the great troops?
Maulana AliHas not there come to thee the story of the hosts,
Free MindsHas news come to you of the soldiers?
Qaribullah Has it come to you the story of the hosts

George SaleHath not the story of the hosts,
JM RodwellHath not the story reached thee of the hosts

AsadHAS IT ever come within thy ken, the story of the [sinful] hosts

85:18 فرعون وثمود

al-Buruj 085:019

85:19 بل الذين كفروا في تكذيب


TransliterationBali allatheena kafaroo fee taktheebin
LiteralBut those who disbelieved (are) in lying/denial/falsification.

Yusuf AliAnd yet the Unbelievers (persist) in rejecting (the Truth)!
PickthalNay, but those who disbelieve live in denial
Arberry Nay, but the unbelievers still cry lies,
ShakirNay! those who disbelieve are in (the act of) giving the lie to the truth.
SarwarIn fact, the disbelievers had always rejected (Our revelations).
KhalifaThose who disbelieve are plagued with denial.
Hilali/KhanNay! The disbelievers (persisted) in denying (Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and his Message of Islamic Monotheism).
H/K/SaheehBut they who disbelieve are in [persistent] denial,
MalikYet the unbelievers persist in denying the truth,[19]
QXPAnd yet the rejecters knowingly live in denial.
Maulana AliNay, those who disbelieve give the lie --
Free MindsNo, those who rejected are in denial.
Qaribullah Yet the unbelievers still belie,

Yusuf AliBut Allah doth encompass them from behind!
