‏88:1 سورة الغاشية بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ هل اتاك حديث الغاشية

Transliteration	Hal ataka hadeethu alghashiyati
Literal	Did the disaster's/pericardium's/Resurrection's information/news come to you ?

Yusuf Ali	Has the story reached thee of the overwhelming (Event)?
Pickthal	Hath there come unto thee tidings of the Overwhelming?
Arberry	Hast thou received the story of the Enveloper?
Shakir	Has not there come to you the news of the overwhelming calamity?
Sarwar	Have you heard the story of the overwhelming event (the Day of Judgment)?.
Khalifa	Are you aware of the Overwhelming?
Hilali/Khan	Has there come to you the narration of the overwhelming (i.e. the Day of Resurrection);
H/K/Saheeh	Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming [event]?
Malik	Has the news of the over shadowing event of resurrection reached you?[1]
QXP	Has the news of the Dominating Event reached you?
Maulana Ali	Has there come to thee the news of the Overwhelming Event?
Free Minds	Has the news come to you of that which will overwhelm?
Qaribullah	Have you received the news of the Enveloper?

George Sale	Hath the news of the overwhelming day of judgement reached thee?
JM Rodwell	Hath the tidings of the day that shall OVERSHADOW, reached thee?

Asad	HAS THERE COME unto thee the tiding of the Overshadowing Event?'

al-Ghashiyah 088:002

‏88:2 وجوه يومئذ خاشعة

Transliteration	Wujoohun yawma-ithin khashiAAatun
Literal	Faces/fronts (on) that day (are) humble/submissive .

Yusuf Ali	Some faces, that Day, will be humiliated,
Pickthal	On that day (many) faces will be downcast,
Arberry	Faces on that day humbled,
Shakir	(Some) faces on that day shall be downcast,
Sarwar	On that day the faces of some people will be humbly cast down,
Khalifa	Faces on that day will be shamed.
Hilali/Khan	Some faces, that Day, will be humiliated (in the Hell-fire, i.e. the faces of all disbelievers, Jews and Christians, etc.).
H/K/Saheeh	[Some] faces, that Day, will be humbled,
Malik	On that Day some faces shall be downcast,[2]
QXP	Some faces on that Day will be downcast.
Maulana Ali	Faces on that day will be downcast,
Free Minds	Faces on that Day which will be shamed.
Qaribullah	On that Day faces shall be humbled,

‏88:3 عاملة ناصبة

Transliteration	AAamilatun nasibatun
Literal	Making/doing/working, fatigued/exhausted.

Yusuf Ali	Labouring (hard), weary,-
Pickthal	Toiling, weary,
Arberry	labouring, toilworn,
Shakir	Laboring, toiling,
Sarwar	troubled and tired as a result of their deeds in the past.
Khalifa	Laboring and exhausted.
Hilali/Khan	Labouring (hard in the worldly life by worshipping others besides Allah), weary (in the Hereafter with humility and disgrace) .
H/K/Saheeh	Working [hard] and exhausted.
Malik	in hard labor, worn out,[3]
QXP	Laboring, exhausted. (They were in motion without action. They toiled without clear direction).
Maulana Ali	Labouring, toiling,
Free Minds	Labouring and weary.
Qaribullah	laboring, wornout,

‏88:4 تصلى نارا حامية

Transliteration	Tasla naran hamiyatan
Literal	It roasts/suffers a hot fire .

Yusuf Ali	The while they enter the Blazing Fire,-
Pickthal	Scorched by burning fire,
Arberry	roasting at a scorching fire,
Shakir	Entering into burning fire,
Sarwar	They will suffer the heat of the blazing fire
Khalifa	Suffering in a blazing Hellfire.
Hilali/Khan	They will enter in the hot blazing Fire,
H/K/Saheeh	They will [enter to] burn in an intensely hot Fire.
Malik	scorching in the blazing fire,[4]
QXP	As they enter a sizzling Fire.
Maulana Ali	Entering burning Fire,
Free Minds	They will enter a blazing Fire.
Qaribullah	roasting at a scorching Fire

George Sale	They shall be cast into scorching fire to be broiled:

‏88:5 تسقى من عين انية

Transliteration	Tusqa min AAaynin aniyatin
Literal	Being given drink/being watered from (a) present/near water well/spring.

Yusuf Ali	The while they are given, to drink, of a boiling hot spring,
Pickthal	Drinking from a boiling spring,
Arberry	watered at a boiling fountain,
Shakir	Made to drink from a boiling spring.
Sarwar	and will be made to drink from a fiercely boiling spring.
Khalifa	Drinking from a flaming spring.
Hilali/Khan	They will be given to drink from a boiling spring,
H/K/Saheeh	They will be given drink from a boiling spring.
Malik	given to drink from a boiling fountain.[5]
QXP	Given to drink from a spring of burning anguish.
Maulana Ali	Made to drink from a boiling spring.
Free Minds	And be given to drink from a boiling spring.
Qaribullah	that is fueled from a tremendously hot fountain,

George Sale	They shall be given to drink of a boiling fountain:

al-Ghashiyah 088:006

‏88:6 ليس لهم طعام الا من ضريع

Transliteration	Laysa lahum taAAamun illa min dareeAAin
Literal	Food/feeding is not for them except from Dareigh/gland (excretion) .

Yusuf Ali	No food will there be for them but a bitter Dhari'
Pickthal	No food for them save bitter thorn-fruit
Arberry	no food for them but cactus thorn
Shakir	They shall have no food but of thorns,
Sarwar	They will have no food other than bitter and thorny fruit
Khalifa	They will have no food except the useless variety.
Hilali/Khan	No food will there be for them but a poisonous thorny plant,
H/K/Saheeh	For them there will be no food except from a poisonous, thorny plant
Malik	They shall have no food except bitter thorny fruit,[6]
QXP	No food for them but the bitterness of dry thorns (that they scattered to hurt others during their wayward journey through life).
Maulana Ali	They will have no food but of thorns,
Free Minds	They will have no food except from a thorny plant.
Qaribullah	no food for them except thorny plants

George Sale	They shall have no food, but of dry thorns and thistles;

‏88:7 لايسمن ولايغني من جوع

Transliteration	La yusminu wala yughnee min jooAAin
Literal	(It) does not fatten (nourish), and nor enriches/suffices from starvation/hunger.

Yusuf Ali	Which will neither nourish nor satisfy hunger.
Pickthal	Which doth not nourish nor release from hunger.
Arberry	unfattening, unappeasing hunger.
Shakir	Which will neither fatten nor avail against hunger.
Sarwar	which will neither fatten them nor satisfy them.
Khalifa	It never nourishes, nor satisfies hunger.
Hilali/Khan	Which will neither nourish nor avail against hunger.
H/K/Saheeh	Which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger.
Malik	which will neither provide nourishment nor satisfy hunger.[7]
QXP	Which nourishes not, nor relieves hunger.
Maulana Ali	Neither nourishing nor satisfying hunger.
Free Minds	It does not nourish nor avail against hunger.
Qaribullah	which neither sustains, nor satisfy hunger.

George Sale	which shall not fatten, neither shall they satisfy hunger.
JM Rodwell	Which shall not fatten, nor appease their hunger.

Asad	which gives no strength and neither stills hunger.

al-Ghashiyah 088:008

‏88:8 وجوه يومئذ ناعمة

Transliteration	Wujoohun yawma-ithin naAAimatun
Literal	Faces/fronts (on) that day (are) comfortable and eased/happy/smooth .

Yusuf Ali	(Other) faces that Day will be joyful,
Pickthal	In that day other faces will be calm,
Arberry	Faces on that day jocund,
Shakir	(Other) faces on that day shall be happy,
Sarwar	However, on that day the faces of other people will be happy.
Khalifa	Other faces on that day will be full of joy.
Hilali/Khan	(Other) faces, that Day, will be joyful,
H/K/Saheeh	[Other] faces, that Day, will show pleasure.
Malik	While some faces on that Day shall be radiant,[8]
QXP	On that Day some faces will shine with Bliss.
Maulana Ali	Faces on that day will be happy,
Free Minds	And faces on that Day which are soft.
Qaribullah	(Whereas other) faces on that Day will be joyful,

George Sale	But the countenances of others, on that day, shall be joyful;
JM Rodwell	Joyous too, on that day, the countenances of others,

Asad	[And] some faces will on that Day shine with bliss,

al-Ghashiyah 088:009

‏88:9 لسعيها راضية

Transliteration	LisaAAyiha radiyatun
Literal	Accepting/approving for its striving/endeavor .

Yusuf Ali	Pleased with their striving,-
Pickthal	Glad for their effort past,
Arberry	with their striving well-pleased,
Shakir	Well-pleased because of their striving,
Sarwar	and pleased with the result of their deeds in the past.
Khalifa	Satisfied with their work.
Hilali/Khan	Glad with their endeavour (for their good deeds which they did in this world, along with the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism).
H/K/Saheeh	With their effort [they are] satisfied
Malik	well pleased with their endeavors,[9]
QXP	Happy with the fruit of their effort.
Maulana Ali	Glad for their striving,
Free Minds	For their pursuit they are content.
Qaribullah	well pleased with their striving,

Asad	well-pleased with [the fruit of] their striving,

al-Ghashiyah 088:010

‏88:10 في جنة عالية

Transliteration	Fee jannatin AAaliyatin
Literal	In an elevated/dignified treed garden/paradise.

Yusuf Ali	In a Garden on high,
Pickthal	In a high Garden
Arberry	in a sublime Garden,
Shakir	In a lofty garden,
Sarwar	They will live in an exalted garden
Khalifa	In an exalted Paradise.
Hilali/Khan	In a lofty Paradise.
H/K/Saheeh	In an elevated garden,
Malik	in a lofty garden.[10]
QXP	In a Garden exalted in honor.
Maulana Ali	In a lofty Garden,
Free Minds	In a high paradise.
Qaribullah	in a Garden on high,

George Sale	They shall be placed in a lofty garden,

al-Ghashiyah 088:011

‏88:11 لاتسمع فيها لاغية

Transliteration	La tasmaAAu feeha laghiyatan
Literal	You do not hear/listen (to) nonsense/senseless talk in it.

Yusuf Ali	Where they shall hear no (word) of vanity:
Pickthal	Where they hear no idle speech,
Arberry	hearing there no babble;
Shakir	Wherein you shall not hear vain talk.
Sarwar	wherein they will not hear any vain talk.
Khalifa	In it, no nonsense is heard.
Hilali/Khan	Where they shall neither hear harmful speech nor falsehood,
H/K/Saheeh	Wherein they will hear no unsuitable speech.
Malik	Therein they shall hear no loose talk.[11]
QXP	Wherein you hear not senseless speech.
Maulana Ali	Wherein thou wilt hear no vain talk.
Free Minds	You will not hear in it any nonsense.
Qaribullah	where they will hear no idle talk.

George Sale	wherein thou shalt hear no vain discourse:

Asad	wherein thou wilt hear no empty talk.

al-Ghashiyah 088:012

‏88:12 فيها عين جارية

Transliteration	Feeha AAaynun jariyatun
Literal	In it (is a) flowing/running water well/spring .

Yusuf Ali	Therein will be a bubbling spring:
Pickthal	Wherein is a gushing spring,
Arberry	therein a running fountain,
Shakir	Therein is a fountain flowing,
Sarwar	Therein will be a flowing spring,
Khalifa	In it, a spring flows.
Hilali/Khan	Therein will be a running spring,
H/K/Saheeh	Within it is a flowing spring.
Malik	Therein they shall have running springs.[12]
QXP	Therein is an ever-flowing Spring of Grace (76:16-17).
Maulana Ali	Therein is a fountain flowing.
Free Minds	In it is a running spring.
Qaribullah	A gushing fountain shall be there

‏88:13 فيها سرر مرفوعة

Transliteration	Feeha sururun marfooAAatun
Literal	In it (are) raised royal beds/sofas.

Yusuf Ali	Therein will be Thrones (of dignity), raised on high,
Pickthal	Wherein are couches raised
Arberry	therein uplifted couches
Shakir	Therein are thrones raised high,
Sarwar	raised couches,
Khalifa	In it, there are luxurious furnishings.
Hilali/Khan	Therein will be thrones raised high,
H/K/Saheeh	Within it are couches raised high
Malik	Therein they shall be reclining on raised soft couches,[13]
QXP	Therein are thrones of honor.
Maulana Ali	Therein are thrones raised high,

Qaribullah	and raised couches,

Transliteration	Waakwabun mawdooAAatun
Literal	And laid/raised cups .

Pickthal	And goblets set at hand
Arberry	and goblets set forth
Shakir	And drinking-cups ready placed,
Sarwar	well arranged goblets,
Khalifa	And drinks made available.
Hilali/Khan	And cups set at hand.
H/K/Saheeh	And cups put in place
Malik	with goblets placed before them;[14]
QXP	And shiny glasses set at hand.

Shakir	And cushions set in a row,
Sarwar	well-placed cushions,
Khalifa	And pitchers in rows.

Pickthal	And silken carpets spread.
Arberry	and carpets outspread.
Shakir	And carpets spread out.
Sarwar	and well spread carpets.
Khalifa	And carpets throughout.
Hilali/Khan	And rich carpets (all) spread out.
H/K/Saheeh	And carpets spread around.
Malik	and fine carpets richly spread.[16]
QXP	And silken carpets spread out.

‏88:17 افلا ينظرون الى الابل كيف خلقت

Transliteration	Afala yanthuroona ila al-ibili kayfa khuliqat
Literal	Do they not look/wonder about to the camels how it was created?

Yusuf Ali	Do they not look at the Camels, how they are made?-
Pickthal	Will they not regard the camels, how they are created?
Arberry	What, do they not consider how the camel was created,
Shakir	Will they not then consider the camels, how they are created?
Sarwar	Have they not looked at how the camel is created,
Khalifa	Why do they not reflect on the camels and how they are created?
Hilali/Khan	Do they not look at the camels, how they are created?
H/K/Saheeh	Then do they not look at the camels how they are created?
Malik	Do they not look at the camels, how they were created?[17]
QXP	Will they not, then, look at: the water-laden clouds, how they are made? (15:22).

‏88:18 والى السماء كيف رفعت

Transliteration	Wa-ila alssama-i kayfa rufiAAat
Literal	And to the sky/space how it was raised?

Yusuf Ali	And at the Sky, how it is raised high?-
Pickthal	And the heaven, how it is raised?
Arberry	how heaven was lifted up,
Shakir	And the heaven, how it is reared aloft,
Sarwar	how the heavens are raised up high,
Khalifa	And the sky and how it is raised.
Hilali/Khan	And at the heaven, how it is raised?
H/K/Saheeh	And at the sky how it is raised?
Malik	The heaven, how it was raised high?[18]
QXP	- And at the sky, how it is raised high? (Without visible pillars (13:2)).

‏88:19 والى الجبال كيف نصبت

Transliteration	Wa-ila aljibali kayfa nusibat
Literal	And to the mountains how it was erected and raised/affixed?

Yusuf Ali	And at the Mountains, how they are fixed firm?-
Pickthal	And the hills, how they are set up?
Arberry	how the mountains were hoisted,
Shakir	And the mountains, how they are firmly fixed,
Sarwar	how the mountains are set firm,
Khalifa	And the mountains and how they are constructed.
Hilali/Khan	And at the mountains, how they are rooted and fixed firm?
H/K/Saheeh	And at the mountains how they are erected?
Malik	The mountains, how they were firmly set?[19]
QXP	- And at the mountains, how they are entrenched?
Maulana Ali	And the mountains, how they are fixed?
Free Minds	And to the mountains, how was it set?

‏88:20 والى الارض كيف سطحت

Transliteration	Wa-ila al-ardi kayfa sutihat
Literal	And to the earth/Planet Earth how it was outspread/surfaced ?

Yusuf Ali	And at the Earth, how it is spread out?
Pickthal	And the earth, how it is spread?
Arberry	how the earth was outstretched?
Shakir	And the earth, how it is made a vast expanse?
Sarwar	and how the earth is spread out?.
Khalifa	And the earth and how it is built.
Hilali/Khan	And at the earth, how it is spread out?
H/K/Saheeh	And at the earth how it is spread out?
Malik	And the earth, how it is spread out?[20]
QXP	- And at the earth, how it is spread out? (That you do not even feel the sphere, nor feel its speedy rotations (31:10), (39:5), (79:28-30)).
Maulana Ali	And the earth, how it is spread out?
Free Minds	And to the land, how was it flattened?
Qaribullah	And how the earth was outstretched?

JM Rodwell	And to the earth how it is outspread?

Asad	And at the earth, how it is spread out?

al-Ghashiyah 088:021

‏88:21 فذكر انما انت مذكر

Transliteration	Fathakkir innama anta muthakkirun
Literal	So remind, truly you are a reminder.

Yusuf Ali	Therefore do thou give admonition, for thou art one to admonish.
Pickthal	Remind them, for thou art but a remembrancer,
Arberry	Then remind them! Thou art only a reminder;
Shakir	Therefore do remind, for you are only a reminder.
Sarwar	(Muhammad), preach; you are only a preacher.
Khalifa	You shall remind, for your mission is to deliver this reminder.
Hilali/Khan	So remind them (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)), you are only a one who reminds.
H/K/Saheeh	So remind, [O Muúammad]; you are only a reminder.
Malik	So keep on giving admonition, for you are an admonisher[21]
QXP	(This is some evidence, O Messenger!) Remind them, for you are one to remind.
Maulana Ali	So remind. Thou art only one to remind.
Free Minds	So remind, for you are but a reminder.
Qaribullah	Therefore remind, you are only a Reminder.

George Sale	Wherefore warn thy people; for thou art a warner only:
JM Rodwell	Warn thou then; for thou art a warner only:

Asad	And so, [O Prophet,] exhort them; thy task is only to exhort:

al-Ghashiyah 088:022

‏88:22 لست عليهم بمصيطر

Transliteration	Lasta AAalayhim bimusaytirin
Literal	You are not on them with dominating/controlling.

Yusuf Ali	Thou art not one to manage (men's) affairs.
Pickthal	Thou art not at all a warder over them.
Arberry	thou art not charged to oversee them.
Shakir	You are not a watcher over them;
Sarwar	You do not have full control over them.
Khalifa	You have no power over them.
Hilali/Khan	You are not a dictator over them.
H/K/Saheeh	You are not over them a controller.
Malik	not a taskmaster over them.[22]
QXP	You are not a task master over them.
Maulana Ali	Thou art not warder over them --
Free Minds	You have no power over them.
Qaribullah	You are not charged to oversee them.

George Sale	Thou art not impowered to act with authority over them.
JM Rodwell	Thou hast no authority over them:

Asad	thou canst not compel them [to believe].

al-Ghashiyah 088:023

‏88:23 الا من تولى وكفر

Transliteration	Illa man tawalla wakafara
Literal	Except who turned away and disbelieved.

Yusuf Ali	But if any turn away and reject Allah,-
Pickthal	But whoso is averse and disbelieveth,
Arberry	But he who turns his back, and disbelieves,
Shakir	But whoever turns back and disbelieves,
Sarwar	However, those who turn away and disbelieve,.
Khalifa	As for those who turn away and disbelieve.
Hilali/Khan	Save the one who turns away and disbelieves
H/K/Saheeh	However, he who turns away and disbelieves
Malik	As for those who turn their backs and disbelieve,[23]
QXP	But whoever turns away and denies the Truth,
Maulana Ali	But whoever turns back and disbelieves,
Free Minds	Except for he who turns away and rejects.
Qaribullah	As for those who turn their back and disbelieve,

Asad	However, as for him who turns away, being bent on denying the truth,

al-Ghashiyah 088:024

‏88:24 فيعذبه الله العذاب الاكبر

Transliteration	FayuAAaththibuhu Allahu alAAathaba al-akbara
Literal	So God tortures him the torture, the greatest .

Yusuf Ali	Allah will punish him with a mighty Punishment,
Pickthal	Allah will punish him with direst punishment.
Arberry	God shall chastise him with the greatest chastisement.
Shakir	Allah will chastise him with the greatest chastisement.
Sarwar	God will punish them with the greatest torment.
Khalifa	GOD will commit them to the great retribution.
Hilali/Khan	Then Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment.
H/K/Saheeh	Then Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment.
Malik	Allah will punish them with the mighty punishment.[24]
QXP	Allah will requite him with a great requital.
Maulana Ali	Allah will chastise him with the greatest chastisement.
Free Minds	Then God will punish him with the great retribution.
Qaribullah	Allah will punish them with the greatest punishment.

George Sale	God shall punish him with the greater punishment of the life to come.
JM Rodwell	God shall punish him with the greater punishment.

Asad	him will God cause to suffer the greatest suffering [in the life to come]:

al-Ghashiyah 088:025

‏88:25 ان الينا ايابهم

Transliteration	Inna ilayna iyabahum
Literal	That truly to Us (is) their return.

Yusuf Ali	For to Us will be their return;
Pickthal	Lo! unto Us is their return
Arberry	Truly, to Us is their return;
Shakir	Surely to Us is their turning back,
Sarwar	To Us they will all return.
Khalifa	To us is their ultimate destiny.
Hilali/Khan	Verily, to Us will be their return;
H/K/Saheeh	Indeed, to Us is their return.
Malik	Surely to Us is their return,[25]
QXP	Behold, unto Us is their return.
Maulana Ali	Surely to Us is their return,
Free Minds	Indeed, to Us is their return.
Qaribullah	Indeed, to Us they shall return,

George Sale	Verily unto us shall they return:
JM Rodwell	Verily to Us shall they return;

Asad	for behold, unto Us will be their return,

al-Ghashiyah 088:026

‏88:26 ثم ان علينا حسابهم

Transliteration	Thumma inna AAalayna hisabahum
Literal	Then that truly on Us (is) their account/calculation.

Yusuf Ali	Then it will be for Us to call them to account.
Pickthal	And Ours their reckoning.
Arberry	then upon Us shall rest their reckoning.
Shakir	Then surely upon Us is the taking of their account.
Sarwar	In Our hands are their accounts.
Khalifa	Then we will call them to account.
Hilali/Khan	Then verily, for Us will be their reckoning.
H/K/Saheeh	Then indeed, upon Us is their account.
Malik	then surely it is for Us to take their account.[26]
QXP	Then it is for Us to call them to account.
Maulana Ali	Then it is for Us to call them to account.
Free Minds	Then to Us is their judgment.
Qaribullah	then upon Us shall rest their reckoning.

George Sale	Then shall it be our part to bring them to account.
JM Rodwell	Then shall it be Our's to reckon with them.

Asad	and verily, It is for Us to call them to account.

No soul can believe exept by the will of Allah
