89:5 هل في ذلك قسم لذي حجر |

Transliteration | Hal fee thalika qasamun lithee hijrin |
Literal | Is in that an oath to (those) of (E) a mind? |

Yusuf Ali | Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? |
Pickthal | There surely is an oath for thinking man. |
Arberry | Is there in that an oath for a mindful man? |
Shakir | Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. |
Sarwar | Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people?. |
Khalifa | A profound oath, for one who possesses intelligence. |
Hilali/Khan | There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! |

89:6 الم تر كيف فعل ربك بعاد |

Literal | Did you not see/understand how your Lord made/did with Aad? |

Yusuf Ali | Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- |
Pickthal | Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, |
Arberry | Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, |

Yusuf Ali | And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- |

Literal | And Pharaoh that of the stakes/pegs/nails ? |

Yusuf Ali | And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes? |
Pickthal | And with Pharaoh, firm of might, |
Arberry | and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, |
Shakir | And (with) Firon, the lord of hosts, |
Sarwar | (Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake, |

89:11 الذين طغوا في البلاد |

Yusuf Ali | (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, |
Pickthal | Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands, |
Arberry | who all were insolent in the land |
Shakir | Who committed inordinacy in the cities, |

Khalifa | They all transgressed in the land. |

89:12 فاكثروا فيها الفساد |

Literal | So they increased (made too much) in it the corruption . |

Yusuf Ali | And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). |
Pickthal | And multiplied iniquity therein? |
Arberry | and worked much corruption therein? |
Shakir | So they made great mischief therein? |
Sarwar | and spread much corruption in the land. |

Literal | So your Lord poured on them (the) torture's intensity/severity . |

Yusuf Ali | Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: |
Pickthal | Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. |
Arberry | Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; |
Shakir | Therefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement. |
Sarwar | Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; |
Khalifa | Consequently, your Lord poured upon them a whipping retribution. |
Hilali/Khan | So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. |

Literal | That truly your Lord (is) at the watch/observation/ambuscade (E) . |

Yusuf Ali | For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. |
Pickthal | Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. |
Arberry | surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. |
Shakir | Most sure!y your Lord is watching. |
Sarwar | your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). |

89:15 فاما الانسان اذا ماابتلاه ربه فاكرمه ونعمه فيقول ربي اكرمن |

Transliteration | Faamma al-insanu itha ma ibtalahu rabbuhu faakramahu wanaAAAAamahu fayaqoolu rabbee akramani |
Literal | So but the human/mankind when as long as his Lord tested him, so he honoured him and He blessed/comforted and eased him , so he says: "My Lord honored me." |

Yusuf Ali | Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me." |
Pickthal | As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. |
Arberry | As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' |

Malik | As for man, when his Lord tries him through giving him honor and blessings, he says: "My Lord is bountiful to me."[15] |
QXP | But as for man, whenever his Lord lets his life take a turn by giving him honor and Bliss, he says, "My Lord has honored me." (Honor or disgrace are subject to Divine Laws, and are not random phenomena). |

Free Minds | As for man, if his Lord tests him and grants him much, then he says: "My Lord has blessed me!" |

al-Fajr 089:016
89:16 واما اذا ماابتلاه فقدر عليه رزقه فيقول ربي اهانن |

Transliteration | Waamma itha ma ibtalahu faqadara AAalayhi rizqahu fayaqoolu rabbee ahanani |
Literal | And but when as long as He tested him, so He tightened/strained on him His/his provision, so he says: "My Lord humiliated/disgraced/degraded me." |
|
|
Yusuf Ali | But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" |
Pickthal | But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. |
Arberry | But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.' |
Shakir | But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. |
Sarwar | However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance , he says, "God has disgraced me". |
Khalifa | But if He tests him through reduction in provisions, he says, "My Lord is humiliating me!" |
Hilali/Khan | But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: "My Lord has humiliated me!" |
H/K/Saheeh | But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me." |
Malik | But when He tries him through restricting his subsistence, he says: "My Lord has humiliated me."[16] |
QXP | But when He lets his life take a turn by restricting his provision, he says, "My Lord has disgraced me." |
Maulana Ali | But when He tries him, then straitens to him his subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. |
Free Minds | And if his Lord tests him and gives him little wealth, then he says: "My Lord has humiliated me!" |
Qaribullah | But when He tests him by restricting his provision, he says: 'My Lord has humiliated me. ' |

al-Fajr 089:017
89:17 كلا بل لاتكرمون اليتيم |

Transliteration | Kalla bal la tukrimoona alyateema |
Literal | No but, you do not honour/be kind/generous (to) the orphan . |
|
|
Yusuf Ali | Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! |
Pickthal | Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan |
Arberry | No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, |
Shakir | Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, |
Sarwar | (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, |
Khalifa | Wrong! It is you who brought it on yourselves by not regarding the orphan. |
Hilali/Khan | Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! |
H/K/Saheeh | No! But you do not honor the orphan |
Malik | Nay! But you did not show kindness to the orphan,[17] |
QXP | Nay, nay, you honor not the orphan. (You forget to analyze what you do and what you do not do. 'Yatim' = Orphan= Widow = Solitary = Left alone in the society = The helpless. A benevolent society makes room for the 'Yatim'). |
Maulana Ali | Nay, but you honour not the orphan, |
Free Minds | No, you are not generous to the orphan. |
Qaribullah | No! But you show no good to the orphan, |

89:18 ولاتحاضون على طعام المسكين |

Transliteration | Wala tahaddoona AAala taAAami almiskeeni |
Literal | And nor you urge/insight/influence on feeding the poorest of poor/poor oppressed. |
|
|
Yusuf Ali | Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- |
Pickthal | And urge not on the feeding of the poor. |
Arberry | and you urge not the feeding of the needy, |
Shakir | Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, |
Sarwar | or urge one another to feed the destitute?. |
Khalifa | And not advocating charity towards the poor. |
Hilali/Khan | And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskeen (the poor)! |
H/K/Saheeh | And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. |
Malik | nor did you encourage each other in feeding the poor.[18] |
QXP | And you do not encourage one another to feed the needy. ('Miskin' = Poor = Needy = Whose life is stranded for any reason = Whose business has stalled = Who has lost his job = Whose life has been hampered by circumstances. 'Ta'm' = Feeding, includes taking care of all aspects of life. A benevolent collective order takes care of everyone). |

Free Minds | And you do not look to feeding the poor. |
Qaribullah | nor do you urge one another to feed the needy. |

89:19 وتاكلون التراث اكلا لما |

Literal | And you eat the inheritance accumulatively/collectively gluttony . |

Yusuf Ali | And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, |
Pickthal | And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. |

Shakir | And you eat away the heritage, devouring (everything) indiscriminately, |
Sarwar | Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately |

Transliteration | Kalla itha dukkati al-ardu dakkan dakkan |
Literal | No but, when/if the earth/Planet Earth was hammered down/crushed , crushingly/destroyingly ,crushingly/destroyingly . |

Yusuf Ali | Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, |
Pickthal | Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, |
Arberry | No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, |
Shakir | Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, |

Khalifa | Indeed, when the earth is crushed, utterly crushed. |

Qaribullah | No! But when the earth quakes and is pounded, |

89:22 وجاء ربك والملك صفا صفا |

Transliteration | Wajaa rabbuka waalmalaku saffan saffan |
Literal | And your Lord came and the angels (in) a row/arranged (after) a row/arranged. |

Yusuf Ali | And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, |
Pickthal | And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, |
Arberry | and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, |
Shakir | And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, |
Sarwar | and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. |

Malik | your Lord will come, with angels standing in ranks,[22] |
QXP | And your Lord comes, and His angels, rank upon rank. (A great Revolution will come and the Divine System will be established. The Universal forces will line up to that end). |
Maulana Ali | And thy Lord comes with the angels, ranks on ranks; |

Qaribullah | and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, |

89:23 وجيئ يومئذ بجهنم يومئذ يتذكر الانسان وانى له الذكرى |

Transliteration | Wajee-a yawma-ithin bijahannama yawma-ithin yatathakkaru al-insanu waanna lahu alththikra |
Literal | And came (on) that day with Hell ; that day the human/mankind remembers/mentions , and from where (is) for him the remembrance/reminder? |

|
Yusuf Ali | And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? |
Pickthal | And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? |
Arberry | and Gehenna is brought out, upon that day man will remember; and how shall the Reminder be for him? |
Shakir | And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? |
Sarwar | On that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him. |
Khalifa | On that day, Gehenna will be brought forth. On that day, the human being will remember - but what a remembrance - it will be too late. |
Hilali/Khan | And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? |
H/K/Saheeh | And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? |
Malik | hell shall be brought in sight. On that Day man will remember his deeds, but how is that remembrance going to profit him?[23] |
QXP | And Hell is brought close that Day. On that Day man will heed the Advisory, but of what avail will then be the remembrance? |
Maulana Ali | And hell is made to appear that day. On that day man will be mindful, and of what use will being mindful be then? |
Free Minds | And Hell on that Day is brought. On that Day man will remember, but how will the remembrance now help him? |
Qaribullah | and Gehenna (Hell) is brought near on that Day the human will remember, and how shall the Reminder be for him? |

George Sale | and hell, on that day, shall be brought nigh: On that day shall man call to remembrance his evil deeds; but how shall remembrance avail him? |
JM Rodwell | And Hell on that day shall be moved up,-Man shall on that day remember himself. But how shall remembrance help him? |

89:24 يقول ياليتني قدمت لحياتي |

Transliteration | Yaqoolu ya laytanee qaddamtu lihayatee |
Literal | He says: "Oh if only I advanced/presented/preceded for my life." |

Yusuf Ali | He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!" |
Pickthal | He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! |
Arberry | He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' |
Shakir | He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! |
Sarwar | He will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life". |
Khalifa | He will say, "Oh, I wish I prepared for my (eternal) life." |
Hilali/Khan | He will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!" |
H/K/Saheeh | He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." |
Malik | He will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth some good deeds for this life of mine."[24] |
QXP | He will say, "Ah, I wish I had sent forth some good for my life!" |
Maulana Ali | He will say: O would that I had sent before for (this) my life! |
Free Minds | He says: "I wish I had worked towards my life!" |
Qaribullah | He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life! ' |

al-Fajr 089:025
89:25 فيومئذ لايعذب عذابه احد |

Transliteration | Fayawma-ithin la yuAAaththibu AAathabahu ahadun |
Literal | So (on) that day no one tortures His torture. |
|
|
Yusuf Ali | For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, |
Pickthal | None punisheth as He will punish on that day! |
Arberry | Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, |
Shakir | But on that day shall no one chastise with (anything like) His chastisement, |
Sarwar | On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. |
Khalifa | On that day, no retribution could be worse than His retribution. |
Hilali/Khan | So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. |
H/K/Saheeh | So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, |

89:26 ولايوثق وثاقه احد |

Transliteration | Wala yoothiqu wathaqahu ahadun |
Literal | And no one ties/chains/affirms His tying/chaining (restraining). |

Yusuf Ali | And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. |
Pickthal | None bindeth as He then will bind. |
Arberry | none shall bind as He binds. |
Shakir | And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. |
Sarwar | And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. |
Khalifa | And no confinement is as effective as His confinement. |

89:27 ياايتها النفس المطمئنة |

Literal | You, you the self, the assured/tranquil . |

Yusuf Ali | (To the righteous soul will be said:) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction! |
Pickthal | But ah! thou soul at peace! |
Arberry | 'O soul at peace, |
Shakir | O soul that art at rest! |
Sarwar | Serene soul, |
Khalifa | As for you, O content soul. |
Hilali/Khan | (It will be said to the pious): "O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction! |

Malik | To the righteous soul it will be said: "O fully satisfied soul![27] |
QXP | But Oh! You human being that has attained inner peace! (By living upright (13:28), (91:9)). |
