LiteralAnd/by ten nights.

Yusuf AliBy the Nights twice five;

Sarwarby the Ten (secret) Nights,
KhalifaAnd the ten nights.
Hilali/KhanBy the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Heejjah) ,

89:3 والشفع والوتر

89:4 والليل اذا يسر


TransliterationWaallayli itha yasri
LiteralAnd/by the night when (it) goes/departs.

Yusuf AliAnd by the Night when it passeth away;-
PickthalAnd the night when it departeth,
Arberry by the night when it journeys on!
ShakirAnd the night when it departs.
Sarwarand by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality).
KhalifaBy the night as it passes.
Hilali/KhanAnd by the night when it departs.
H/K/SaheehAnd [by] the night when it passes,
Malikand the night when it departs![4]
QXPAnd Witness to the Truth is the departing of the Night of Ignorance.

89:5 هل في ذلك قسم لذي حجر


TransliterationHal fee thalika qasamun lithee hijrin
LiteralIs in that an oath to (those) of (E) a mind?

Yusuf AliIs there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand?
PickthalThere surely is an oath for thinking man.
Arberry Is there in that an oath for a mindful man?
ShakirTruly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding.
SarwarIs this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people?.
KhalifaA profound oath, for one who possesses intelligence.
Hilali/KhanThere is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)!
H/K/SaheehIs there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?
MalikIs there not in these an oath (enough evidence) for those who use their common sense?[5]
QXPIs not all this a solemn evidence for every thinking person?
Maulana AliTruly in this is an oath for men of understanding.
Free MindsIn this is an oath for the one with intelligence.
Qaribullah Is there in that an oath for the mindful?

George SaleIs there not in this an oath formed with understanding?
JM RodwellIs there not in this an oath becoming a man of sense?

AsadConsidering all this - could there be, to anyone endowed with reason, a [more] solemn evidence of the truth?



al-Fajr 089:006

89:6 الم تر كيف فعل ربك بعاد


TransliterationAlam tara kayfa faAAala rabbuka biAAadin
LiteralDid you not see/understand how your Lord made/did with Aad?

Yusuf AliSeest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),-
PickthalDost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad,
Arberry Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad,
ShakirHave you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad,
Sarwar(Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad,
KhalifaHave you noted what your Lord did to `Aad?
Hilali/KhanDid you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) not see (thought) how your Lord dealt with Ad (people)?
H/K/SaheehHave you not considered how your Lord dealt with Aad
MalikHave you not seen how your Lord dealt with ‘Ad?[6]
QXPHave you noted how your Lord dealt with Aad? (They had refused to see the Light (7:65-72)).
Maulana AliHast thou not considered how thy Lord dealt with ‘Ad,

Qaribullah Have you not heard how your Lord dealt with Aad?

89:7 ارم ذات العماد


TransliterationIrama thati alAAimadi
LiteralIram that of the pillars/posts ?

Yusuf AliOf the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars,
PickthalWith many-columned Iram,
Arberry Iram of the pillars,
Shakir(The people of) Aram, possessors of lofty buildings,
Sarwarthe people of the huge columned city of Eram
KhalifaErum; the town with tall buildings.
Hilali/KhanWho were very tall like lofty pillars,

MalikThe residents of Iram, the city of lofty pillars,[7]

89:8 التي لم يخلق مثلها في البلاد


TransliterationAllatee lam yukhlaq mithluha fee albiladi
LiteralWhich was not created similar/equal to it in the countries/cities ?

Yusuf AliThe like of which were not produced in (all) the land?
PickthalThe like of which was not created in the lands;
Arberry the like of which was never created in the land,
ShakirThe like of which were not created in the (other) cities;
Sarwarwhose like has never been created in any other land.
KhalifaThere was nothing like it anywhere.
Hilali/KhanThe like of which were not created in the land?
H/K/SaheehThe likes of whom had never been created in the land?
Malikthe like of which had never been built in other cities.[8]
QXPThe like of which (the towers and castles) were never built in other cities. (26:128-134).

al-Fajr 089:009

89:9 وثمود الذين جابوا الصخر بالواد


TransliterationWathamooda allatheena jaboo alssakhra bialwadi
LiteralAnd Thamud who pierced/penetrated the rock/rock terrain at the valley?

Yusuf AliAnd with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?-
PickthalAnd with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley;
Arberry and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley,
ShakirAnd (with) Samood, who hewed out the rocks in the valley,
Sarwar(Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley.
KhalifaAlso Thamoud, who carved the rocks in their valley.
Hilali/KhanAnd (with) Thamood (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)?
H/K/SaheehAnd [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley?
MalikAnd with the people of Thamud who hewed out their dwellings in the rocks of the valley?[9]
QXPAnd with Thamud, who slashed out for dwellings rocks in the valley. (Wadi-al-Qura. (7:74), (15:82)).

al-Fajr 089:010

89:10 وفرعون ذي الاوتاد


TransliterationWafirAAawna thee al-awtadi
LiteralAnd Pharaoh that of the stakes/pegs/nails ?

Yusuf AliAnd with Pharaoh, lord of stakes?
PickthalAnd with Pharaoh, firm of might,
Arberry and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs,
ShakirAnd (with) Firon, the lord of hosts,
Sarwar(Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake,
KhalifaAnd Pharaoh who possessed might.
Hilali/KhanAnd (with) Firaun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)?
H/K/SaheehAnd [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes?
MalikAnd with Pharaoh the owner of stakes?[10]
QXPAnd with the powerful Pharaoh of the great Pyramids.
Maulana AliAnd (with) Pharaoh, the lord of hosts,

Qaribullah And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)?

al-Fajr 089:011

89:11 الذين طغوا في البلاد


TransliterationAllatheena taghaw fee albiladi
LiteralThose who tyrannized/exceeded the limit in the countries/cities .

Yusuf Ali(All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands,
PickthalWho (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands,
Arberry who all were insolent in the land
ShakirWho committed inordinacy in the cities,
Sarwarled rebellious lives,
KhalifaThey all transgressed in the land.
Hilali/KhanWho did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah).
H/K/Saheeh[All of] whom oppressed within the lands
MalikThey all transgressed beyond bounds in their cities,[11]
QXPThey all played God in the land, towns and cities.
Maulana AliWho exceeded limits in the cities,
Free MindsThey all transgressed in the land.
Qaribullah They were tyrants in the land

George SaleWho had behaved insolently in the earth,
JM RodwellWho all committed excesses in the lands,

Asad[It was they] who transgressed all bounds of equity all over their lands,



al-Fajr 089:012

89:12 فاكثروا فيها الفساد


TransliterationFaaktharoo feeha alfasada
LiteralSo they increased (made too much) in it the corruption .

Yusuf AliAnd heaped therein mischief (on mischief).
PickthalAnd multiplied iniquity therein?
Arberry and worked much corruption therein?
ShakirSo they made great mischief therein?
Sarwarand spread much corruption in the land.
KhalifaThey spread evil throughout.
Hilali/KhanAnd made therein much mischief.
H/K/SaheehAnd increased therein the corruption.
Malikand committed great mischief therein.[12]
QXPAnd increased corruption and crime therein.
Maulana AliAnd made great mischief therein?
Free MindsAnd made much corruption therein.
Qaribullah and exceeded in corruption therein.

al-Fajr 089:013

89:13 فصب عليهم ربك سوط عذاب


TransliterationFasabba AAalayhim rabbuka sawta AAathabin
LiteralSo your Lord poured on them (the) torture's intensity/severity .

Yusuf AliTherefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements:
PickthalTherefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment.
Arberry Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement;
ShakirTherefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement.
SarwarThus, your Lord afflicted them with torment;
KhalifaConsequently, your Lord poured upon them a whipping retribution.
Hilali/KhanSo your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment.
H/K/SaheehSo your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.
MalikTherefore, your Lord let loose on them His scourge of torment.[13]
QXPAnd so, your Lord chastised them with a whipping punishment.
Maulana AliSo thy Lord poured on them a portion of chastisement.
Free MindsSo your Lord poured upon them a measure of retribution.
Qaribullah (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment;

George SaleWherefore thy Lord poured on them various kinds of chastisement:
JM RodwellWherefore thy Lord let loose on them the scourge of chastisement,

Asadand therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering:



al-Fajr 089:014

89:14 ان ربك لبالمرصاد


TransliterationInna rabbaka labialmirsadi
LiteralThat truly your Lord (is) at the watch/observation/ambuscade (E) .

Yusuf AliFor thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower.
PickthalLo! thy Lord is ever watchful.
Arberry surely thy Lord is ever on the watch.
ShakirMost sure!y your Lord is watching.
Sarwaryour Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people).
KhalifaYour Lord is ever watchful.
Hilali/KhanVerily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them).
H/K/SaheehIndeed, your Lord is in observation.
MalikSurely your Lord is ever watchful.[14]
QXPBehold, your Lord is ever on the watch!
Maulana AliSurely thy Lord is Watchful;
Free MindsYour Lord is ever watchful.
Qaribullah indeed, your Lord is ever watchful.

George SaleFor thy Lord is surely in a watch-tower, whence He observeth the actions of men.
JM RodwellFor thy Lord standeth on a watch tower.

Asadfor, verily, thy Sustainer is ever on the watch!



al-Fajr 089:015

89:15 فاما الانسان اذا ماابتلاه ربه فاكرمه ونعمه فيقول ربي اكرمن


TransliterationFaamma al-insanu itha ma ibtalahu rabbuhu faakramahu wanaAAAAamahu fayaqoolu rabbee akramani
LiteralSo but the human/mankind when as long as his Lord tested him, so he honoured him and He blessed/comforted and eased him , so he says: "My Lord honored me."

Yusuf AliNow, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me."
PickthalAs for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me.
Arberry As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.'
ShakirAnd as for man, when his Lord tries him, then treats him with honor and makes him lead an easy life, he says: My Lord honors me.
SarwarAs for the human being, when his Lord tests him, honors him, and grants him bounty, he says, "God has honored me".
KhalifaWhen the human being is tested by his Lord, through blessings and joy, he says, "My Lord is generous towards me."
Hilali/KhanAs for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me."
H/K/SaheehAnd as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."
MalikAs for man, when his Lord tries him through giving him honor and blessings, he says: "My Lord is bountiful to me."[15]
QXPBut as for man, whenever his Lord lets his life take a turn by giving him honor and Bliss, he says, "My Lord has honored me." (Honor or disgrace are subject to Divine Laws, and are not random phenomena).
Maulana AliAs for man, when his Lord tries him, then gives him honour and favours him, he says: My Lord honours me.
Free MindsAs for man, if his Lord tests him and grants him much, then he says: "My Lord has blessed me!"
Qaribullah As for man, when his Lord tests him by honoring him and favoring him, he says: 'My Lord, has honored me. '

George SaleMoreover man, when his Lord trieth him by prosperity, and honoureth him, and is bounteous unto him, saith, my Lord honoureth me:
JM RodwellAs to man, when his Lord trieth him and honoureth him and is bounteous to him, Then saith he, "My Lord honoureth me:"

AsadBUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me";



al-Fajr 089:016

89:16 واما اذا ماابتلاه فقدر عليه رزقه فيقول ربي اهانن


TransliterationWaamma itha ma ibtalahu faqadara AAalayhi rizqahu fayaqoolu rabbee ahanani
LiteralAnd but when as long as He tested him, so He tightened/strained on him His/his provision, so he says: "My Lord humiliated/disgraced/degraded me."

Yusuf AliBut when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!"
PickthalBut whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me.
Arberry But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.'
ShakirBut when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me.
SarwarHowever, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance , he says, "God has disgraced me".
KhalifaBut if He tests him through reduction in provisions, he says, "My Lord is humiliating me!"
Hilali/KhanBut when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: "My Lord has humiliated me!"
H/K/SaheehBut when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."
MalikBut when He tries him through restricting his subsistence, he says: "My Lord has humiliated me."[16]
QXPBut when He lets his life take a turn by restricting his provision, he says, "My Lord has disgraced me."
Maulana AliBut when He tries him, then straitens to him his subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me.
Free MindsAnd if his Lord tests him and gives him little wealth, then he says: "My Lord has humiliated me!"
Qaribullah But when He tests him by restricting his provision, he says: 'My Lord has humiliated me. '

George SaleBut when He proveth him by afflictions, and withholdeth his provisions from him, he saith, my Lord despiseth me.
JM RodwellBut when he proveth him and limiteth his gifts to him, He saith, "My Lord despiseth me."

Asadwhereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!"



al-Fajr 089:017

89:17 كلا بل لاتكرمون اليتيم


TransliterationKalla bal la tukrimoona alyateema
LiteralNo but, you do not honour/be kind/generous (to) the orphan .

Yusuf AliNay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans!
PickthalNay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan
Arberry No indeed; but you honour not the orphan,
ShakirNay! but you do not honor the orphan,
Sarwar(Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans,
KhalifaWrong! It is you who brought it on yourselves by not regarding the orphan.
Hilali/KhanNay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)!
H/K/SaheehNo! But you do not honor the orphan
MalikNay! But you did not show kindness to the orphan,[17]
QXPNay, nay, you honor not the orphan. (You forget to analyze what you do and what you do not do. 'Yatim' = Orphan= Widow = Solitary = Left alone in the society = The helpless. A benevolent society makes room for the 'Yatim').
Maulana AliNay, but you honour not the orphan,
Free MindsNo, you are not generous to the orphan.
Qaribullah No! But you show no good to the orphan,

George SaleBy no means: But ye honour not the orphan,
JM RodwellAye. But ye honour not the orphan,

AsadBut nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan,



al-Fajr 089:018

89:18 ولاتحاضون على طعام المسكين


TransliterationWala tahaddoona AAala taAAami almiskeeni
LiteralAnd nor you urge/insight/influence on feeding the poorest of poor/poor oppressed.

Yusuf AliNor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!-
PickthalAnd urge not on the feeding of the poor.
Arberry and you urge not the feeding of the needy,
ShakirNor do you urge one another to feed the poor,
Sarwaror urge one another to feed the destitute?.
KhalifaAnd not advocating charity towards the poor.
Hilali/KhanAnd urge not on the feeding of AlMiskeen (the poor)!
H/K/SaheehAnd you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.
Maliknor did you encourage each other in feeding the poor.[18]
QXPAnd you do not encourage one another to feed the needy. ('Miskin' = Poor = Needy = Whose life is stranded for any reason = Whose business has stalled = Who has lost his job = Whose life has been hampered by circumstances. 'Ta'm' = Feeding, includes taking care of all aspects of life. A benevolent collective order takes care of everyone).
Maulana AliNor do you urge one another to feed the poor,
Free MindsAnd you do not look to feeding the poor.
Qaribullah nor do you urge one another to feed the needy.

George Saleneither do ye excite one another to feed the poor;
JM RodwellNor urge ye one another to feed the poor,

Asadand you do not urge one another to feed the needy,



al-Fajr 089:019

89:19 وتاكلون التراث اكلا لما


TransliterationWata/kuloona altturatha aklan lamman
LiteralAnd you eat the inheritance accumulatively/collectively gluttony .

Yusuf AliAnd ye devour inheritance - all with greed,
PickthalAnd ye devour heritages with devouring greed.
Arberry and you devour the inheritance greedily,
ShakirAnd you eat away the heritage, devouring (everything) indiscriminately,
SarwarWhy do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately
KhalifaAnd consuming the inheritance of helpless orphans.
Hilali/KhanAnd you devour inheritance all with greed,
H/K/SaheehAnd you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,
MalikGreedily you lay your hands on the inheritance of the weak,[19]
QXPAnd you devour the inheritances with greed.
Maulana AliAnd you devour heritage, devouring all,
Free MindsAnd you consume others inheritance, all with greed.
Qaribullah and you devour the inheritance with greed,

George Saleand ye devour the inheritance of the weak, with undistinguishing greediness;

Asadand you devour the inheritance [of others] with devouring greed,



al-Fajr 089:020

89:20 وتحبون المال حبا جما


TransliterationWatuhibboona almala hubban jamman
LiteralAnd you love/like the property/possession/wealth lovingly excessively .

Yusuf AliAnd ye love wealth with inordinate love!
PickthalAnd love wealth with abounding love.
Arberry and you love wealth with an ardent love
ShakirAnd you love wealth with exceeding love.
Sarwarand why do you have an excessive love of riches?.
KhalifaAnd loving the money too much.
Hilali/KhanAnd you love wealth with much love!
H/K/SaheehAnd you love wealth with immense love.
Malikand you love wealth with all your hearts.[20]
QXPAnd you love wealth with boundless love.
Maulana AliAnd you love wealth with exceeding love.
Free MindsAnd you love money, a love that is excessive.
Qaribullah and you ardently love wealth.

al-Fajr 089:021

89:21 كلا اذا دكت الارض دكا دكا

Yusuf AliNay! When the earth is pounded to powder,
PickthalNay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding,
Arberry No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder,
ShakirNay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces,
SarwarWhen the earth is crushed into small pieces
KhalifaIndeed, when the earth is crushed, utterly crushed.
Hilali/KhanNay! When the earth is ground to powder,
H/K/SaheehNo! When the earth has been leveled pounded and crushed
MalikNay! You should know, when the earth will be pounded to powder,[21]
QXPNay, when the earth is pounded, ground with a grinding.
Maulana AliNay, when the earth is made to crumble to pieces,
Free MindsNo, when the Earth is pounded into rubble.
Qaribullah No! But when the earth quakes and is pounded,

George SaleBy no means should ye do thus. When the earth shall be minutely ground to dust;
JM RodwellAye. But when the earth shall be crushed with crushing, crushing,

AsadNay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing,



al-Fajr 089:022

89:22 وجاء ربك والملك صفا صفا


TransliterationWajaa rabbuka waalmalaku saffan saffan
LiteralAnd your Lord came and the angels (in) a row/arranged (after) a row/arranged.

Yusuf AliAnd thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank,
PickthalAnd thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank,
Arberry and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank,
ShakirAnd your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks,
Sarwarand (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you.
KhalifaAnd your Lord comes, together with the angels in row after row.
Hilali/KhanAnd your Lord comes with the angels in rows,
H/K/SaheehAnd your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank,
Malikyour Lord will come, with angels standing in ranks,[22]
QXPAnd your Lord comes, and His angels, rank upon rank. (A great Revolution will come and the Divine System will be established. The Universal forces will line up to that end).
Maulana AliAnd thy Lord comes with the angels, ranks on ranks;
Free MindsAnd your Lord comes with the Angels row after row.
Qaribullah and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank,

George Saleand thy Lord shall come, and the angels rank by rank;
JM RodwellAnd thy Lord shall come and the angels rank on rank,

Asadand [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank?



al-Fajr 089:023

89:23 وجيئ يومئذ بجهنم يومئذ يتذكر الانسان وانى له الذكرى


TransliterationWajee-a yawma-ithin bijahannama yawma-ithin yatathakkaru al-insanu waanna lahu alththikra
LiteralAnd came (on) that day with Hell ; that day the human/mankind remembers/mentions , and from where (is) for him the remembrance/reminder?

Yusuf AliAnd Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him?
PickthalAnd hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)?
Arberry and Gehenna is brought out, upon that day man will remember; and how shall the Reminder be for him?
ShakirAnd hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him?
SarwarOn that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him.
KhalifaOn that day, Gehenna will be brought forth. On that day, the human being will remember - but what a remembrance - it will be too late.
Hilali/KhanAnd Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him?
H/K/SaheehAnd brought [within view], that Day, is Hell that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance?
Malikhell shall be brought in sight. On that Day man will remember his deeds, but how is that remembrance going to profit him?[23]
QXPAnd Hell is brought close that Day. On that Day man will heed the Advisory, but of what avail will then be the remembrance?
Maulana AliAnd hell is made to appear that day. On that day man will be mindful, and of what use will being mindful be then?
Free MindsAnd Hell on that Day is brought. On that Day man will remember, but how will the remembrance now help him?
Qaribullah and Gehenna (Hell) is brought near on that Day the human will remember, and how shall the Reminder be for him?

George Saleand hell, on that day, shall be brought nigh: On that day shall man call to remembrance his evil deeds; but how shall remembrance avail him?
JM RodwellAnd Hell on that day shall be moved up,-Man shall on that day remember himself. But how shall remembrance help him?

AsadAnd on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him?



al-Fajr 089:024

89:24 يقول ياليتني قدمت لحياتي


TransliterationYaqoolu ya laytanee qaddamtu lihayatee
LiteralHe says: "Oh if only I advanced/presented/preceded for my life."

Yusuf AliHe will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!"
PickthalHe will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life!
Arberry He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!'
ShakirHe shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life!
SarwarHe will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life".
KhalifaHe will say, "Oh, I wish I prepared for my (eternal) life."
Hilali/KhanHe will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!"
H/K/SaheehHe will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life."
MalikHe will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth some good deeds for this life of mine."[24]
QXPHe will say, "Ah, I wish I had sent forth some good for my life!"
Maulana AliHe will say: O would that I had sent before for (this) my life!
Free MindsHe says: "I wish I had worked towards my life!"
Qaribullah He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life! '

George SaleHe shall say, would to God that I had heretofore done good works in my life-time!
JM RodwellHe shall say, Oh! would that I had prepared for this my life!

AsadHe will say, "Oh, would that I had. provided beforehand for my life [to come]!"



al-Fajr 089:025

89:25 فيومئذ لايعذب عذابه احد


TransliterationFayawma-ithin la yuAAaththibu AAathabahu ahadun
LiteralSo (on) that day no one tortures His torture.

Yusuf AliFor, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict,
PickthalNone punisheth as He will punish on that day!
Arberry Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises,
ShakirBut on that day shall no one chastise with (anything like) His chastisement,
SarwarOn that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled.
KhalifaOn that day, no retribution could be worse than His retribution.
Hilali/KhanSo on that Day, none will punish as He will punish.
H/K/SaheehSo on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,
MalikNone can punish as Allah will punish on that Day,[25]
QXPFor, none chastises as He will chastise on that Day.
Maulana AliBut none can punish as He will punish on that day.
Free MindsOn that Day, no other will bear his punishment.
Qaribullah But on that Day none will punish as He (Allah) will punish,

George SaleOn that day none shall punish with his punishment;
JM RodwellOn that day none shall punish as God punisheth,

AsadFor, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day,



al-Fajr 089:026

89:26 ولايوثق وثاقه احد


TransliterationWala yoothiqu wathaqahu ahadun
LiteralAnd no one ties/chains/affirms His tying/chaining (restraining).

Yusuf AliAnd His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind.
PickthalNone bindeth as He then will bind.
Arberry none shall bind as He binds.
ShakirAnd no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding.
SarwarAnd His bonds will be such as none other can bind.
KhalifaAnd no confinement is as effective as His confinement.
Hilali/KhanAnd none will bind as He will bind.
H/K/SaheehAnd none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].
Malikand none can bind as He will bind.[26]
QXPAnd none binds as He binds. (The logical result of disregarding the Creator's Guidance is getting bound by shackles of mental slavery (7:157)).
Maulana AliAnd none can bind as He will bind on that day.
Free MindsNor will anyone be able to free his bonds.
Qaribullah nor will any bind as He binds.

George Salenor shall any bind with his bonds.
JM RodwellAnd none shall bind with such bonds as He.

Asadand none can bind with bonds like His.



al-Fajr 089:027

89:27 ياايتها النفس المطمئنة


TransliterationYa ayyatuha alnnafsu almutma-innatu
LiteralYou, you the self, the assured/tranquil .

Yusuf Ali(To the righteous soul will be said:) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction!
PickthalBut ah! thou soul at peace!
Arberry 'O soul at peace,
ShakirO soul that art at rest!
SarwarSerene soul,
KhalifaAs for you, O content soul.
Hilali/Khan(It will be said to the pious): "O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction!
H/K/Saheeh[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,
MalikTo the righteous soul it will be said: "O fully satisfied soul![27]
QXPBut Oh! You human being that has attained inner peace! (By living upright (13:28), (91:9)).
Maulana AliO soul that art at rest,
Free Minds"O you soul which is peaceful."
Qaribullah O satisfied soul,

George SaleO thou soul which art at rest,
JM RodwellOh, thou soul which art at rest,

Asad[But unto the righteous God will say,] "O thou human being that hast attained to inner peace!



al-Fajr 089:028

89:28 ارجعي الى ربك راضية مرضية


TransliterationIrjiAAee ila rabbiki radiyatan mardiyyatan
LiteralReturn to your Lord accepting/approving, accepted/approved.

Yusuf Ali"Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him!
PickthalReturn unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure!
Arberry return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing!
ShakirReturn to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him),
Sarwarreturn to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you.
KhalifaReturn to your Lord, pleased and pleasing.
Hilali/Khan"Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him!
H/K/SaheehReturn to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],

89:29 فادخلي في عبادي

LiteralSo enter in (among) My worshippers/servants .

Yusuf Ali"Enter thou, then, among My devotees!
PickthalEnter thou among My bondmen!
Arberry Enter thou among My servants!
ShakirSo enter among My servants,

KhalifaWelcome into My servants.
