‏83:1 سورة المطففين بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ ويل للمطففين

Transliteration	Waylun lilmutaffifeena
Literal	Calamity/scandal to the ones giving insufficient or deficient measures .

Yusuf Ali	Woe to those that deal in fraud,-
Pickthal	Woe unto the defrauders:
Arberry	Woe to the stinters who,
Shakir	Woe to the defrauders,
Sarwar	Woe to those who are fraudulent in (weighing and measuring),
Khalifa	Woe to the cheaters.
Hilali/Khan	Woe to Al-Mutaffifin (those who give less in measure and weight (decrease the rights of others)),
H/K/Saheeh	Woe to those who give less [than due],
Malik	Woe to those who defraud,[1]
QXP	Woe unto the dealers in fraud!
Maulana Ali	Woe to the cheaters!

‏83:2 الذين اذا اكتالوا على الناس يستوفون

Transliteration	Allatheena itha iktaloo AAala alnnasi yastawfoona
Literal	Those who if they took by measure or weight for themselves on (from) the people, they fulfill/complete (the measure or weight).

Yusuf Ali	Those who, when they have to receive by measure from men, exact full measure,
Pickthal	Those who when they take the measure from mankind demand it full,
Arberry	when they measure against the people, take full measure
Shakir	Who, when they take the measure (of their dues) from men take it fully,
Sarwar	those who demand a full measure from others
Khalifa	Who demand full measure when receiving from the people.
Hilali/Khan	Those who, when they have to receive by measure from men, demand full measure,

‏83:3 واذا كالوهم او وزنوهم يخسرون

Transliteration	Wa-itha kaloohum aw wazanoohum yukhsiroona
Literal	And if they measured/weighed for them or they weighed/measured for them , they reduce/decrease (cheat).

Yusuf Ali	But when they have to give by measure or weight to men, give less than due.
Pickthal	But if they measure unto them or weight for them, they cause them loss.
Arberry	but, when they measure for them or weigh for them, do skimp.
Shakir	But when they measure out to others or weigh out for them, they are deficient.
Sarwar	but when they measure or weigh, give less.
Khalifa	But when giving them the measures or weights, they cheat.
Hilali/Khan	And when they have to give by measure or weight to men, give less than due.
H/K/Saheeh	But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.
Malik	but when they give by measure or by weight to others, they give less than due.[3]
QXP	But give less than due when giving them by measure or weight. (Or diminish the recompense of the laborer).
Maulana Ali	And when they measure out to others or weigh out for them, they give less than is due.

al-Mutaffifin 083:004

‏83:4 الايظن اولئك انهم مبعوثون

Transliteration	Ala yathunnu ola-ika annahum mabAAoothoona
Literal	Do those not think/assume that they are being resurrected/revived?

Yusuf Ali	Do they not think that they will be called to account?-
Pickthal	Do such (men) not consider that they will be raised again
Arberry	Do those not think that they shall be raised up
Shakir	Do not these think that they shall be raised again
Sarwar	Do they not realize that they will be resurrected
Khalifa	Do they not know that they will be resurrected?
Hilali/Khan	Think they not that they will be resurrected (for reckoning),
H/K/Saheeh	Do they not think that they will be resurrected

‏83:5 ليوم عظيم

Transliteration	Liyawmin AAatheemin
Literal	To a great day/time?

Yusuf Ali	On a Mighty Day,
Pickthal	Unto an Awful Day,
Arberry	unto a mighty day
Shakir	For a mighty day,
Sarwar	on a great day
Khalifa	On a tremendous day?
Hilali/Khan	On a Great Day,

‏83:6 يوم يقوم الناس لرب العالمين

Transliteration	Yawma yaqoomu alnnasu lirabbi alAAalameena
Literal	A day/time the people stand to the creations all together's/(universes') Lord.

Yusuf Ali	A Day when (all) mankind will stand before the Lord of the Worlds?
Pickthal	The day when (all) mankind stand before the Lord of the Worlds?
Arberry	a day when mankind shall stand before the Lord of all Being?
Shakir	The day on which men shall stand before the Lord of the worlds?
Sarwar	when mankind will stand before the Lord of the Universe?.
Khalifa	That is the day when all people will stand before the Lord of the universe.
Hilali/Khan	The Day when (all) mankind will stand before the Lord of the Alameen (mankind, jinns and all that exists)?
H/K/Saheeh	The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?
Malik	a Day when all mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?[6]

al-Mutaffifin 083:007

‏83:7 كلا ان كتاب الفجار لفي سجين

Transliteration	Kalla inna kitaba alfujjari lafee sijjeenin
Literal	No but that truly the debauchers'/corrupters' Book/judgment (is) in (E) Sijjin .

Yusuf Ali	Nay! Surely the record of the wicked is (preserved) in Sijjin.
Pickthal	Nay, but the record of the vile is in Sijjin -
Arberry	No indeed; the Book of the libertines is in Sijjin;
Shakir	Nay! most surely the record of the wicked is in the Sijjin.
Sarwar	Woe to them! Let them know that the records of the sinner's deeds are in Sijin.
Khalifa	Indeed, the book of the wicked is in Sijjeen.
Hilali/Khan	Nay! Truly, the Record (writing of the deeds) of the Fujjar (disbelievers, sinners, evil-doers and wicked) is (preserved) in Sijjeen.
H/K/Saheeh	No! Indeed, the record of the wicked is in sijjeen.
Malik	Indeed not! The record of the wicked is in Sijjeen (prison register),[7]
QXP	Nay, behold, the record of the dividers of humanity is in 'Sijjin'.
Maulana Ali	Nay, surely the record of the wicked is in the prison.
Free Minds	No, the record of the wicked is in Sijjeen.
Qaribullah	No indeed, the Book of the immoral is in Sijjeen.

George Sale	By no means. Verily the register of the actions of the wicked is surely in Sejjin.
JM Rodwell	Yes! the register of the wicked is in Sidjin.

Asad	NAY, VERILY, the record of the wicked is indeed [set down] in a mode inescapable!

al-Mutaffifin 083:008

‏83:8 وماادراك ماسجين

Transliteration	Wama adraka ma sijjeenun
Literal	And what made you know/informed you what (is) Sijjin ?

Yusuf Ali	And what will explain to thee what Sijjin is?
Pickthal	Ah! what will convey unto thee what Sijjin is! -
Arberry	and what shall teach thee what is Sijjin?
Shakir	And what will make you know what the Sijjin is?
Sarwar	Would that you knew what Sijin is!?.
Khalifa	Do you know what Sijjeen is?
Hilali/Khan	And what will make you know what Sijjeen is?
H/K/Saheeh	And what can make you know what is sijjeen?
Malik	what will explain to you, what the Sijjeen is?[8]
QXP	Ah! What will convey to you what 'Sijjin' is!
Maulana Ali	And what will make thee know what the prison is?
Free Minds	And do you know what is Sijjeen?
Qaribullah	What could let you know what the Sijjeen is!

al-Mutaffifin 083:009

‏83:9 كتاب مرقوم

Transliteration	Kitabun marqoomun
Literal	A written/branded/inscribed Book .

Yusuf Ali	(There is) a Register (fully) inscribed.
Pickthal	A written record.
Arberry	A book inscribed.
Shakir	It is a written book.
Sarwar	It is a comprehensively written Book (of records).
Khalifa	A numerically structured book.
Hilali/Khan	A Register inscribed.
H/K/Saheeh	It is [their destination recorded in] a register inscribed.
Malik	This is a written book of hell.[9]
QXP	A record indelibly inscribed. ('Sijjin' = Inescapable, guarded record as if it is imprisoned).
Maulana Ali	It is a written book.
Free Minds	A numbered record.
Qaribullah	(It is) a marked Book.

George Sale	It is a book distinctly written.
JM Rodwell	It is a book distinctly written.

Asad	A record [indelibly] inscribed!

al-Mutaffifin 083:010

‏83:10 ويل يومئذ للمكذبين

Transliteration	Waylun yawma-ithin lilmukaththibeena
Literal	Calamity/scandal (on) that day to the liars/deniers/falsifiers.

Yusuf Ali	Woe, that Day, to those that deny-
Pickthal	Woe unto the repudiators on that day!
Arberry	Woe that day unto those who cry it lies,
Shakir	Woe on that day to the rejecters,
Sarwar	Woe, on that day, to those who have rejected God's revelations
Khalifa	Woe on that day to the rejectors.
Hilali/Khan	Woe, that Day, to those who deny ((Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Day of Resurrection, and Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments)).
H/K/Saheeh	Woe, that Day, to the deniers,
Malik	Woe on that Day to the disbelievers,[10]
QXP	Anguish on that Day for those who deny the Truth in practice!
Maulana Ali	Woe on that day to the rejectors!

Qaribullah	Woe on that Day to those who belied it,

George Sale	Woe be, on that day, unto those who accused the prophets of imposture;

al-Mutaffifin 083:011

‏83:11 الذين يكذبون بيوم الدين

Transliteration	Allatheena yukaththiboona biyawmi alddeeni
Literal	Those who lie/deny/falsify with the Judgment Day/Resurrection Day .

Yusuf Ali	Those that deny the Day of Judgment.
Pickthal	Those who deny the Day of Judgment
Arberry	who cry lies to the Day of Doom;
Shakir	Who give the lie to the day of judgment.
Sarwar	and those who have rejected the Day of Judgment.
Khalifa	They do not believe in the Day of Judgment.
Hilali/Khan	Those who deny the Day of Recompense.
H/K/Saheeh	Who deny the Day of Recompense.
Malik	who deny the Day of Judgment![11]
QXP	Those who deny the Day of Judgment.
Maulana Ali	Who give the lie to the day of Judgment.
Free Minds	Those who denied the Day of recompense.
Qaribullah	who belied the Day of Recompense!

George Sale	who denied the day of judgement as a falsehood!
JM Rodwell	Who treated the day of judgment as a lie!

Asad	those who give the lie to the [coming of] Judgment Day:

al-Mutaffifin 083:012

‏83:12 ومايكذب به الا كل معتد اثيم

Transliteration	Wama yukaththibu bihi illa kullu muAAtadin atheemin
Literal	And none lies/denies/falsifiers with it except every/each transgressor/violator , sinner/criminal.

Yusuf Ali	And none can deny it but the Transgressor beyond bounds the Sinner!
Pickthal	Which none denieth save each criminal transgressor,
Arberry	and none cries lies to it but every guilty aggressor.
Shakir	And none gives the lie to it but every exceeder of limits, sinful one
Sarwar	No one rejects it except the sinful transgressors
Khalifa	None disbelieves therein except the transgressor, the sinful.
Hilali/Khan	And none can deny it except every transgressor beyond bounds, (in disbelief, oppression and disobedience of Allah, the sinner!)
H/K/Saheeh	And none deny it except every sinful transgressor.
Malik	None denies it except the sinful transgressor.[12]
QXP	And none denies it but he who drags down his own progress by crossing the bounds of reason. (The Law of Cause and Effect easily appeals to reason).
Maulana Ali	And none gives the lie to it but every exceeder of limits, every sinful one;
Free Minds	And none will deny it except every transgressor who knows no bounds.
Qaribullah	None belies it except every guilty sinner.

George Sale	And none denieth the same as falsehood, except every unjust and flagitious person:
JM Rodwell	None treat it as a lie, save the transgressor, the criminal,

Asad	for, none gives the lie to it but such as are wont to transgress against all that is [and are] immersed in sin:

al-Mutaffifin 083:013

‏83:13 اذا تتلى عليه اياتنا قال اساطير الاولين

Transliteration	Itha tutla AAalayhi ayatuna qala asateeru al-awwaleena
Literal	When/if Our verses/evidences are read/recited on him he said: "The first's/beginner's myths/baseless stories ."

Yusuf Ali	When Our Signs are rehearsed to him, he says, "Tales of the ancients!"
Pickthal	Who, when thou readest unto him Our revelations, saith: (Mere) fables of the men of old.
Arberry	When our signs are recited to him, he says, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients!'
Shakir	When Our communications are recited to him, he says: Stories of those of yore.
Sarwar	who, when listening to Our revelations, say, "These are only ancient legends".
Khalifa	When our revelations are recited to him, he says, "Tales from the past!"
Hilali/Khan	When Our Verses (of the Quran) are recited to him he says: "Tales of the ancients!"
H/K/Saheeh	When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."
Malik	Who, when Our revelations are recited to him, says: "These are the tales of the ancient peoples."[13]
QXP	When Our Messages are conveyed to him, he says, "These are stories of the bygones."
Maulana Ali	When Our messages are recited to him, he says: Stories of those of yore!
Free Minds	When Our verses are recited to him, he says: "Tales of the ancients!"
Qaribullah	When Our verses are recited to him, he says: 'Fictitious tales of the ancients! '

George Sale	Who, when our signs are rehearsed unto him, saith, they are fables of the ancients.
JM Rodwell	Who, when our signs are rehearsed to him, saith, "Tales of the Ancients!"

Asad	[and so,] whenever Our messages are conveyed to them, they but say, "Fables of ancient times!"

al-Mutaffifin 083:014

‏83:14 كلا بل ران على قلوبهم ماكانوا يكسبون

Transliteration	Kalla bal rana AAala quloobihim ma kanoo yaksiboona
Literal	No but, rather (it) dominated/overwhelmed on their hearts/minds , what they were gaining/acquiring .

Yusuf Ali	By no means! but on their hearts is the stain of the (ill) which they do!
Pickthal	Nay, but that which they have earned is rust upon their hearts.
Arberry	No indeed; but that they were earning has rusted upon their hearts.
Shakir	Nay! rather, what they used to do has become like rust . upon their hearts.
Sarwar	They will never have faith. In fact, their hearts are stained from their deeds.
Khalifa	Indeed, their hearts have become shielded by their sins.
Hilali/Khan	Nay! But on their hearts is the Ran (covering of sins and evil deeds) which they used to earn .
H/K/Saheeh	No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning.
Malik	Of course not! In fact their misdeeds have caused a covering on their hearts.[14]
QXP	Nay, but their hearts get corroded by what they have earned. (2:7).
Maulana Ali	Nay, rather, what they earned is rust upon their hearts.
Free Minds	No, a covering has been placed on their hearts for what they have earned.
Qaribullah	No indeed! Their own deeds have cast a veil over their hearts.

George Sale	By no means: But rather their lusts have cast a vail over their hearts.
JM Rodwell	Yes; but their own works have got the mastery over their hearts.

Asad	Nay, but their hearts are corroded by all [the evil] that they were wont to do!

al-Mutaffifin 083:015

‏83:15 كلا انهم عن ربهم يومئذ لمحجوبون

Transliteration	Kalla innahum AAan rabbihim yawma-ithin lamahjooboona
Literal	No but, that they truly are from their Lord (on) that day being prevented (E).

Yusuf Ali	Verily, from (the Light of) their Lord, that Day, will they be veiled.
Pickthal	Nay, but surely on that day they will be covered from (the mercy of) their Lord.
Arberry	No indeed; but upon that day they shall be veiled from their Lord,
Shakir	Nay! most surely they shall on that day be debarred from their Lord.
Sarwar	On the Day of Judgment, they will certainly be barred from the mercy of their Lord.
Khalifa	Indeed, they will be isolated, on that day, from their Lord.
Hilali/Khan	Nay! Surely, they (evil-doers) will be veiled from seeing their Lord that Day.
H/K/Saheeh	No! Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be partitioned.
Malik	Indeed on that Day, they shall be debarred from the vision of their Lord.[15]
QXP	Nay, verily, on that Day they will be veiled from (the Light of) their Lord.
Maulana Ali	Nay, surely they are that day debarred form their Lord.
Free Minds	No, they will be blocked from their Lord on that Day.
Qaribullah	No indeed, on that Day they shall be veiled from their Lord.

George Sale	By no means. Verily they shall be shut out from their Lord on that day;
JM Rodwell	Yes; they shall be shut out as by a veil from their Lord on that day;

Asad	Nay, verily, from [the grace of] their Sustainer shall they on that Day be debarred;

al-Mutaffifin 083:016

‏83:16 ثم انهم لصالوا الجحيم

Transliteration	Thumma innahum lasaloo aljaheemi
Literal	Then that they truly are entering into the fire/roasting (E) the Hell .

Yusuf Ali	Further, they will enter the Fire of Hell.
Pickthal	Then lo! they verily will burn in hell,
Arberry	then they shall roast in Hell.
Shakir	Then most surely they shall enter the burning fire.
Sarwar	They will suffer the heat of fire
Khalifa	Then they will be thrown into Hell.
Hilali/Khan	Then, verily they will indeed enter and taste the burning flame of Hell.
H/K/Saheeh	Then indeed, they will [enter and] burn in Hellfire.
Malik	Then they shall be made to enter the hell,[16]
QXP	Then, behold, they shall enter the Blazing Fire. ('Jahim' = Insurmountable Barrier = Bar to progress = Obstruction that halts = Halting of evolution = Mere survival = Hellfire = Flames of anguish = Fire of regret).
Maulana Ali	Then they will surely enter the burning Fire.
Free Minds	Then they will be entered into the Hell.
Qaribullah	Then they shall roast in Hell,

George Sale	and they shall be sent into hell to be burned:
JM Rodwell	Then shall they be burned in Hell-fire:

Asad	and then, behold, they shall enter the blazing fire

al-Mutaffifin 083:017

‏83:17 ثم يقال هذا الذي كنتم به تكذبون

Transliteration	Thumma yuqalu hatha allathee kuntum bihi tukaththiboona
Literal	Then (it) will be said: "That (is) what you were with it lying/denying/falsifying."

Yusuf Ali	Further, it will be said to them: "This is the (reality) which ye rejected as false!
Pickthal	And it will be said (unto them): This is that which ye used to deny.
Arberry	Then it shall be said to them, 'This is that you cried lies to.'
Shakir	Then shall it be said: This is what you gave the lie to.
Sarwar	and who will be told, "This is what you had called a lie".
Khalifa	They will be told, "This is what you used to deny."
Hilali/Khan	Then, it will be said to them: "This is what you used to deny!"
H/K/Saheeh	Then it will be said [to them], "This is what you used to deny."
Malik	and told: "This is what you used to deny."[17]
QXP	And it will be said, "This is that which you used to deny."
Maulana Ali	Then it will be said: This is what you gave the lie to.
Free Minds	Then it will be said: "This is what you used to deny!"
Qaribullah	and it will be said to them: 'This is that which you belied! '

George Sale	Then shall it be said unto them, by the infernal guards, this is what ye denied as a falsehood.
JM Rodwell	Then shall it be said to them, "This is what ye deemed a lie."

Asad	and be told: "This is the [very thing] to which you were wont to give the lie!"

al-Mutaffifin 083:018

‏83:18 كلا ان كتاب الابرار لفي عليين

Transliteration	Kalla inna kitaba al-abrari lafee AAilliyyeena
Literal	No but, that truly the righteous'/charitable' Book/judgment (is) in (E) Eley'yeen/height/elevation.

Yusuf Ali	Day, verily the record of the Righteous is (preserved) in 'Illiyin.
Pickthal	Nay, but the record of the righteous is in 'Illiyin -
Arberry	No indeed; the book of the pious is in Illiyun;
Shakir	Nay! Most surely the record of the righteous shall be in the Iliyin.
Sarwar	However, the records of the deeds of the virtuous ones will certainly be in Illiyin.
Khalifa	Indeed, the book of the righteous will be in `Elleyyeen.
Hilali/Khan	Nay! Verily, the Record (writing of the deeds) of Al-Abrar (the pious who fear Allah and avoid evil), is (preserved) in Illiyyoon.
H/K/Saheeh	No! Indeed, the record of the righteous is in illiyyun.
Malik	But, surely the record of the righteous is in `Illiyeen (register of exalted ones),[18]
QXP	Nay, behold, the record of those who made room for others in the community is in 'Illiyin'. ('Birr' = Virtue = Make expanse = Make room for others in the society = Help people to adjust and make progress in a new environment = Exponential growth).
Maulana Ali	Nay, surely the record of the righteous is in the highest places.
Free Minds	No, the record of the pious is in Elliyeen.
Qaribullah	But, the Book of the righteous is in the 'Illiyoon.

George Sale	Assuredly. But the register of the actions of the righteous is in Illiyyun:
JM Rodwell	Even so. But the register of the righteous is in Illiyoun.

Asad	NAY, VERILY - the record of the truly virtuous is [set down] in a mode most lofty!

al-Mutaffifin 083:019

‏83:19 وماادراك ماعليون

Transliteration	Wama adraka ma AAilliyyoona
Literal	And what made you know/informed you what (is) Eley'yoon/highest places ?

Yusuf Ali	And what will explain to thee what 'Illiyun is?
Pickthal	Ah, what will convey unto thee what 'Illiyin is! -
Arberry	and what shall teach thee what is Illiyun?
Shakir	And what will make you know what the highest Iliyin is?
Sarwar	Would that you knew what Illiyin is!
Khalifa	Do you know what `Elleyyeen is?
Hilali/Khan	And what will make you know what Illiyyoon is?
H/K/Saheeh	And what can make you know what is illiyyun?

‏83:20 كتاب مرقوم

Transliteration	Kitabun marqoomun
Literal	A written/branded/inscribed Book .

Yusuf Ali	(There is) a Register (fully) inscribed,
Pickthal	A written record,
Arberry	A book inscribed,
Shakir	It is a written book,
Sarwar	It is a comprehensively written Book (of records).
Khalifa	A numerically structured book.
Hilali/Khan	A Register inscribed.
H/K/Saheeh	It is [their destination recorded in] a register inscribed
Malik	This is a written book,[20]
QXP	A record indelibly inscribed. ('Illiyin' = Loftiness upon loftiness).
Maulana Ali	It is a written book.
Free Minds	A numbered record.
Qaribullah	(It is) a marked Book,

George Sale	It is a book distinctly written:
JM Rodwell	A book distinctly written;

Asad	A record [indelibly] inscribed,

al-Mutaffifin 083:021

‏83:21 يشهده المقربون

Transliteration	Yashhaduhu almuqarraboona
Literal	The neared/closer witness it.

Yusuf Ali	To which bear witness those Nearest (to Allah).
Pickthal	Attested by those who are brought near (unto their Lord).
Arberry	witnessed by those brought nigh.
Shakir	Those who are drawn near (to Allah) shall witness it.
Sarwar	The ones nearest to God will bring it to public.
Khalifa	To be witnessed by those close to Me.
Hilali/Khan	To which bear witness those nearest (to Allah, i.e. the angels).
H/K/Saheeh	Which is witnessed by those brought near [to Allah].
Malik	attested by those who are nearest to Allah (angels).[21]
QXP	These near ones (to Allah) find it open before them.
Maulana Ali	Those drawn near (to Allah) witness it.
Free Minds	To be witnessed by those brought near.
Qaribullah	witnessed by those who are near (to Allah).

George Sale	Those who approach near unto God, are witnesses thereto.
JM Rodwell	The angels who draw nigh unto God attest it.

Asad	witnessed by all who have [ever] been drawn close unto God.

al-Mutaffifin 083:022

‏83:22 ان الابرار لفي نعيم

Transliteration	Inna al-abrara lafee naAAeemin
Literal	That truly the righteous/charitable (are) in (E) blessing/goodness .

Yusuf Ali	Truly the Righteous will be in Bliss:
Pickthal	Lo! the righteous verily are in delight,
Arberry	Surely the pious shall be in bliss,
Shakir	Most surely the righteous shall be in bliss,
Sarwar	The virtuous will live in bliss,
Khalifa	The righteous have deserved bliss.
Hilali/Khan	Verily, Al-Abrar (the pious who fear Allah and avoid evil) will be in delight (Paradise).
H/K/Saheeh	Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure
Malik	Surely the righteous will be in bliss,[22]
QXP	Behold, those who made room in the society for others, verily, are in Blissful delight.
Maulana Ali	Surely the righteous are in bliss,
Free Minds	The pious are in Paradise.
Qaribullah	The righteous shall indeed be blissful,

George Sale	Verily the righteous shall dwell among delights:
JM Rodwell	Surely, among delights shall the righteous dwell!

Asad	Behold, [in the life to come] the truly virtuous will indeed be in bliss:

al-Mutaffifin 083:023

‏83:23 على الارائك ينظرون

Transliteration	AAala al-ara-iki yanthuroona
Literal	On the luxurious beds/couches they look/watch .

Yusuf Ali	On Thrones (of Dignity) will they command a sight (of all things):
Pickthal	On couches, gazing,
Arberry	upon couches gazing;
Shakir	On thrones, they shall gaze;
Sarwar	reclining on couches, reviewing (the bounties given to them).
Khalifa	On luxurious furnishings they watch.
Hilali/Khan	On thrones, looking (at all things).
H/K/Saheeh	On adorned couches, observing.
Malik	reclining on soft couches, looking all around,[23]
QXP	On beautiful thrones, they will look up (to the Magnificent Kingdom (76:20)).
Maulana Ali	On raised couches, gazing --
Free Minds	Upon luxurious furnishings, observing.
Qaribullah	(reclining) upon couches they will gaze,

George Sale	Seated on couches they shall behold objects of pleasure;
JM Rodwell	Seated on bridal couches they will gaze around;

Asad	[restingJ on couches, they will look up [to God]:

al-Mutaffifin 083:024

‏83:24 تعرف في وجوههم نضرة النعيم

Transliteration	TaAArifu fee wujoohihim nadrata alnnaAAeemi
Literal	You know in their faces/fronts the blessing's/goodness' beauty and goodness (brightness).

Yusuf Ali	Thou wilt recognise in their faces the beaming brightness of Bliss.
Pickthal	Thou wilt know in their faces the radiance of delight.
Arberry	thou knowest in their faces the radiancy of bliss
Shakir	You will recognize in their faces the brightness of bliss.
Sarwar	You can trace on their faces the joy of their bliss.
Khalifa	You recognize in their faces the joy of bliss.
Hilali/Khan	You will recognise in their faces the brightness of delight.
H/K/Saheeh	You will recognize in their faces the radiance of pleasure.
Malik	and you will recognize in their faces the brightness of bliss.[24]
QXP	You will see their faces glitter with Delight.
Maulana Ali	Thou recognizest in their faces the brightness of bliss.
Free Minds	You know in their faces the look of Paradise.
Qaribullah	and in their faces you shall know the radiance of bliss.

George Sale	thou shalt see in their faces the brightness of joy.
JM Rodwell	Thou shalt mark in their faces the brightness of delight;

Asad	upon their faces thou wilt see the brightness of bliss.

al-Mutaffifin 083:025

‏83:25 يسقون من رحيق مختوم

Transliteration	Yusqawna min raheeqin makhtoomin
Literal	They are being given water/drink from sealed/completed pure nectar .

Yusuf Ali	Their thirst will be slaked with Pure Wine sealed:
Pickthal	They are given to drink of a pure wine, sealed,
Arberry	as they are given to drink of a wine sealed
Shakir	They are made to quaff of a pure drink that is sealed (to others).
Sarwar	They will be given pure wine out of sealed containers
Khalifa	Their drinks will be spiced with nectar.
Hilali/Khan	They will be given to drink pure sealed wine.
H/K/Saheeh	They will be given to drink [pure] wine [which was] sealed.
Malik	Their thirst will be quenched with the choicest sealed wine,[25]
QXP	They will be given a refreshing drink of pure nectar, sealed.
Maulana Ali	They are given to drink of a pure drink, sealed.
Free Minds	They are given drink from a pure sealed vial.
Qaribullah	They shall be given to drink of a wine that is sealed,

George Sale	They shall be given to drink of pure wine, sealed;
JM Rodwell	Choice sealed wine shall be given them to quaff,

Asad	They will be given a drink of pure wine whereon the seal [of God] will have been set,

al-Mutaffifin 083:026

‏83:26 ختامه مسك وفي ذلك فليتنافس المتنافسون

Transliteration	Khitamuhu miskun wafee thalika falyatanafasi almutanafisoona
Literal	Its end/conclusion (is) musk/fragrance, and in (for) that so the competitors/rivals should compete/rival.

Yusuf Ali	The seal thereof will be Musk: And for this let those aspire, who have aspirations:
Pickthal	Whose seal is musk - for this let (all) those strive who strive for bliss -
Arberry	whose seal is musk -- so after that let the strivers strive --
Shakir	The sealing of it is (with) musk; and for that let the aspirers aspire.
Sarwar	which have the fragrance of musk. This is the kind of place for which one should really aspire.
Khalifa	Its spice is like musk. This is what the competitors should compete for.
Hilali/Khan	The last thereof (that wine) will be the smell of musk, and for this let (all) those strive who want to strive (i.e. hasten earnestly to the obedience of Allah).
H/K/Saheeh	The last of it is musk. So for this let the competitors compete.
Malik	and the seal will be of musk. Those who wish to excel above others, let them endeavor to excel in this.[26]
QXP	The seal of it is musk. For all this, then, let every aspirant aspire!
Maulana Ali	The sealing of it is (with) musk. And for that let the aspirers aspire.
Free Minds	Its seal will be of musk, so in that let those who are in competition compete.
Qaribullah	its seal is musk, for this let the competitors compete;

George Sale	the seal whereof shall be musk: And to this let those aspire, who aspire to happiness:
JM Rodwell	The seal of musk. For this let those pant who pant for bliss-

Asad	pouring forth with a fragrance of musk. To that [wine of paradise], then, let all such aspire as [are willing to] aspire to things of high account:

al-Mutaffifin 083:027

‏83:27 ومزاجه من تسنيم

Transliteration	Wamizajuhu min tasneemin
Literal	And its mixture/blend (is) from paradises' valuable water.

Yusuf Ali	With it will be (given) a mixture of Tasnim:
Pickthal	And mixed with water of Tasnim,
Arberry	and whose mixture is Tasnim,
Shakir	And the admixture of it is a water of Tasnim,
Sarwar	With the wine is a drink from Tasnim,
Khalifa	Mixed into it will be special flavors.
Hilali/Khan	It (that wine) will be mixed with Tasneem.
H/K/Saheeh	And its mixture is of Tasneem,
Malik	That wine shall have a mixture of Tasnim,[27]
QXP	For, it consists of Nobility. ('Tasnim' = 'Tashrif' = Nobility = Ennobling = Hosting in nobility = Exalting = Imparting honor = Raising in degree).
Maulana Ali	And it is tempered with water coming from above --
Free Minds	And its taste will be special.
Qaribullah	and its mixture is Tasneem,

George Sale	And the water mixed therewith shall be of Tasnim,
JM Rodwell	Mingled therewith shall be the waters of Tasnim-

Asad	for it is composed of all that is most exalting

al-Mutaffifin 083:028

‏83:28 عينا يشرب بها المقربون

Transliteration	AAaynan yashrabu biha almuqarraboona
Literal	A water spring/well, the neared/closer drink by (near) it .

Yusuf Ali	A spring, from (the waters) whereof drink those Nearest to Allah.
Pickthal	A spring whence those brought near (to Allah) drink.
Arberry	a fountain at which do drink those brought nigh.
Shakir	A fountain from which drink they who are drawn near (to Allah).
Sarwar	a spring, the nearest ones to God will drink from it.
Khalifa	From a spring that is reserved for those close to Me.
Hilali/Khan	A spring whereof drink those nearest to Allah.
H/K/Saheeh	A spring from which those near [to Allah] drink.
Malik	a spring, at which those nearest to Allah will drink.[28]
QXP	A Spring from which the nearest (to Allah) drink.
Maulana Ali	A fountain from which drink those drawn near (to Allah).
Free Minds	A spring where those who are brought near will drink.
Qaribullah	a fountain at which those brought near (to their Lord) drink.

George Sale	a fountain whereof those shall drink who approach near unto the divine presence.
JM Rodwell	Fount whereof they who draw nigh to God shall drink.

Asad	a source [of bliss] whereof those who are drawn close unto God shall drink.

al-Mutaffifin 083:029

‏83:29 ان الذين اجرموا كانوا من الذين امنوا يضحكون

Transliteration	Inna allatheena ajramoo kanoo mina allatheena amanoo yadhakoona
Literal	That truly those who committed crimes/sins were laughing/wondering from (about) those who believed.

Yusuf Ali	Those in sin used to laugh at those who believed,
Pickthal	Lo! the guilty used to laugh at those who believed,
Arberry	Behold, the sinners were laughing at the believers,
Shakir	Surely they who are guilty used to laugh at those who believe.
Sarwar	The sinners had been laughing at the believers.
Khalifa	The wicked used to laugh at those who believed.
Hilali/Khan	Verily! (During the worldly life) those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed.
H/K/Saheeh	Indeed, those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed.
Malik	During their life on earth, the culprits used to mock at the believers,[29]
QXP	Behold, those who thrived on others' toil used to laugh at those who had attained belief.
Maulana Ali	Surely they who are guilty used to laugh at those who believe.
Free Minds	Those who were criminals used to laugh at those who had believed.
Qaribullah	The sinners laughed at the believers

George Sale	They who act wickedly laugh the true believers to scorn;
JM Rodwell	The sinners indeed laugh the faithful to scorn:

Asad	BEHOLD, those who have abandoned themselves to sin are wont to laugh at such as have attained to faith

al-Mutaffifin 083:030

‏83:30 واذا مروا بهم يتغامزون

Transliteration	Wa-itha marroo bihim yataghamazoona
Literal	And when/if they passed by them, they signal/wink to each other.

Yusuf Ali	And whenever they passed by them, used to wink at each other (in mockery);
Pickthal	And wink one to another when they passed them;
Arberry	when them passed them by winking at one another,
Shakir	And when they passed by them, they winked at one another.
Sarwar	When passing by them, they would wink at one another
Khalifa	When they passed by them, they used to poke fun.
Hilali/Khan	And whenever they passed by them, used to wink one to another (in mockery);
H/K/Saheeh	And when they passed by them, they would exchange derisive glances.
Malik	and wink at one another as they passed them by.[30]
QXP	And whenever they passed by the believers they winked at each other in sarcasm. (Look, these people 'waste' their wealth and person on strangers).
Maulana Ali	And when they passed by them, they winked at one another,
Free Minds	And when they passed by them they used to wink to each other.
Qaribullah	and winked at one another as they passed them by.

George Sale	and when they pass by them, they wink at one another:
JM Rodwell	And when they pass by them they wink at one another,-

Asad	and whenever they pass by them, they wink at one another [derisively];

al-Mutaffifin 083:031

‏83:31 واذا انقلبوا الى اهلهم انقلبوا فكهين

Transliteration	Wa-itha inqalaboo ila ahlihimu inqalaboo fakiheena
Literal	And when/if they returned to their people/family , they returned enjoying/humorous .

Yusuf Ali	And when they returned to their own people, they would return jesting;
Pickthal	And when they returned to their own folk, they returned jesting;
Arberry	and when they returned to their people they returned blithely,
Shakir	And when they returned to their own followers they returned exulting.
Sarwar	and, on returning to their people, boast about what they had done.
Khalifa	When they got together with their people, they used to joke.
Hilali/Khan	And when they returned to their own people, they would return jesting;
H/K/Saheeh	And when they returned to their people, they would return jesting.
Malik	When they returned to their own people they returned jesting.[31]
QXP	And when they returned to their own folk, they used to tell jokes about them.
Maulana Ali	And when they returned to their people, they returned exulting.
Free Minds	And when they returned to their people, they would return jesting.
Qaribullah	When they returned to their people they returned jesting;

George Sale	And when they turn aside to their people, they turn aside making scurrilous jests:
JM Rodwell	And when they return to their own people, they return jesting,

Asad	and whenever they return to people of their own kind, they return full of jests;

al-Mutaffifin 083:032

‏83:32 واذا راوهم قالوا ان هؤلاء لضالون

Transliteration	Wa-itha raawhum qaloo inna haola-i ladalloona
Literal	And when/if they saw them they said: "That truly, those are misguided (E)."

Yusuf Ali	And whenever they saw them, they would say, "Behold! These are the people truly astray!"
Pickthal	And when they saw them they said: Lo! these have gone astray.
Arberry	and when they saw them they said, 'Lo, these men are astray!'
Shakir	And when they saw them, they said: Most surely these are in error;
Sarwar	On seeing the believers, they would say, "These people have gone astray".
Khalifa	Whenever they saw them, they said, "These people are far astray!
Hilali/Khan	And when they saw them, they said: "Verily! These have indeed gone astray!"
H/K/Saheeh	And when they saw them, they would say, "Indeed, those are truly lost."
Malik	And when they saw the believers, they used to say: "These are the people who have surely gone astray,"[32]
QXP	And whenever they saw the believers they said, "Behold, these people have indeed gone astray (wandering in unmarked valleys of life)."
Maulana Ali	And when they saw them, they said: Surely these are in error --
Free Minds	And if they see them they Say: "These are indeed misguided!"
Qaribullah	and when they saw them said: 'These are they who are astray! '

George Sale	And when they see them, they say, verily these are mistaken men.
JM Rodwell	And when they see them they say, "These are the erring ones."

Asad	and whenever they see those [who believe,] they say, "Behold, these [people] have indeed gone astray!"

al-Mutaffifin 083:033

‏83:33 وماارسلوا عليهم حافظين

Transliteration	Wama orsiloo AAalayhim hafitheena
Literal	And they were not sent on them protecting/observing .

Yusuf Ali	But they had not been sent as keepers over them!
Pickthal	Yet they were not sent as guardians over them.
Arberry	Yet they were not sent as watchers over them.
Shakir	And they were not sent to be keepers over them.
Sarwar	No one has appointed them to watch over the believers.
Khalifa	"They have no such thing as (invisible) guards."
Hilali/Khan	But they (disbelievers, sinners) had not been sent as watchers over them (the believers).
H/K/Saheeh	But they had not been sent as guardians over them.
Malik	although they had not been sent as guardians over them.[33]
QXP	Yet, they have not been sent as watchers over them.
Maulana Ali	And they were not sent as keepers over them.
Free Minds	But they were not sent over them as caretakers.
Qaribullah	Yet they were not sent to be their guardians.

George Sale	But they are not sent to be keepers over them.
JM Rodwell	And yet they have no mission to be their guardians.

Asad	And, withal, they have no call to watch over [the beliefs of] others. . .

al-Mutaffifin 083:034

‏83:34 فاليوم الذين امنوا من الكفار يضحكون

Transliteration	Faalyawma allatheena amanoo mina alkuffari yadhakoona
Literal	So the day/today those who believed are laughing/wondering from (about) the disbelievers.

Yusuf Ali	But on this Day the Believers will laugh at the Unbelievers:
Pickthal	This day it is those who believe who have the laugh of disbelievers,
Arberry	So today the believers are laughing at the unbelievers,
Shakir	So today those who believe shall laugh at the unbelievers;
Sarwar	On the Day of Judgment, the believers will laugh at the disbelievers
Khalifa	Today, those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers.
Hilali/Khan	But this Day (the Day of Resurrection) those who believe will laugh at the disbelievers
H/K/Saheeh	So Today those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers,
Malik	On that Day, the believers shall be laughing at the unbelievers,[34]
QXP	That Day those who have chosen to be graced with belief will be in a position to laugh at the deniers (but they won't. (7:43), (15:47)).
Maulana Ali	So this day those who believe laugh at the disbelievers --
Free Minds	And today, those who had believed are laughing at the rejecters!
Qaribullah	But on this Day the believers will laugh at the unbelievers

George Sale	Wherefore one day the true believers, in their turn, shall laugh the infidels to scorn:
JM Rodwell	Therefore, on that day the faithful shall laugh the infidels to scorn,

Asad	But on the Day [of Judgment], they who had attained to faith will [be able to] laugh at the [erstwhile] deniers of the truth:

al-Mutaffifin 083:035

‏83:35 على الارائك ينظرون

Transliteration	AAala al-ara-iki yanthuroona

Qaribullah	as they (recline) upon their couches and gaze (around them).

George Sale	Lying on couches they shall look down upon them in hell.
JM Rodwell	As reclining on bridal couches they behold them.

Asad	[for, resting in paradise] on couches, they will look on [and say to themselves]:

al-Mutaffifin 083:036

‏83:36 هل ثوب الكفار ماكانوا يفعلون

Transliteration	Hal thuwwiba alkuffaru ma kanoo yafAAaloona
Literal	Did the disbelievers become rewarded/replaced what they were making/doing ?462

Yusuf Ali	Will not the Unbelievers have been paid back for what they did?
Pickthal	Are not the disbelievers paid for what they used to do?
Arberry	Have the unbelievers been rewarded what they were doing?
Shakir	Surely the disbelievers are rewarded as they did.
Sarwar	Will not the disbelievers then be duly recompensed for their laughing at the believers?.
Khalifa	Most assuredly, the disbelievers are requited for what they did.
Hilali/Khan	Are not the disbelievers paid (fully) for what they used to do?
H/K/Saheeh	Have the disbelievers [not] been rewarded [this Day] for what they used to do?
Malik	Have not the unbelievers been fully rewarded for what they used to do?[36]
QXP	Are these deniers of the Truth being returned anything but their own doings? ('Thawab' = Return on an investment).
Maulana Ali	Surely the disbelievers are rewarded as they did.
Free Minds	Have the rejecters been paid for what they used to do?
Qaribullah	Have the unbelievers been rewarded for what they did?

George Sale	Shall not the infidels be rewarded for that which they have done?
JM Rodwell	Shall not the infidels be recompensed according to their works?

Asad	"Are these deniers of the truth being [thus] requited for [aught but] what they were wont to do?"
