83:1 سورة المطففين بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ ويل للمطففين


TransliterationWaylun lilmutaffifeena
LiteralCalamity/scandal to the ones giving insufficient or deficient measures .

Yusuf AliWoe to those that deal in fraud,-
PickthalWoe unto the defrauders:
Arberry Woe to the stinters who,
ShakirWoe to the defrauders,
SarwarWoe to those who are fraudulent in (weighing and measuring),
KhalifaWoe to the cheaters.
Hilali/KhanWoe to Al-Mutaffifin (those who give less in measure and weight (decrease the rights of others)),
H/K/SaheehWoe to those who give less [than due],
MalikWoe to those who defraud,[1]
QXPWoe unto the dealers in fraud!
Maulana AliWoe to the cheaters!

83:2 الذين اذا اكتالوا على الناس يستوفون


TransliterationAllatheena itha iktaloo AAala alnnasi yastawfoona
LiteralThose who if they took by measure or weight for themselves on (from) the people, they fulfill/complete (the measure or weight).

Yusuf AliThose who, when they have to receive by measure from men, exact full measure,
PickthalThose who when they take the measure from mankind demand it full,
Arberry when they measure against the people, take full measure
ShakirWho, when they take the measure (of their dues) from men take it fully,
Sarwarthose who demand a full measure from others
KhalifaWho demand full measure when receiving from the people.
Hilali/KhanThose who, when they have to receive by measure from men, demand full measure,

Malikwho when, they take by measure from men, take the full measure,[2]

al-Mutaffifin 083:003

83:3 واذا كالوهم او وزنوهم يخسرون


TransliterationWa-itha kaloohum aw wazanoohum yukhsiroona
LiteralAnd if they measured/weighed for them or they weighed/measured for them , they reduce/decrease (cheat).

Yusuf AliBut when they have to give by measure or weight to men, give less than due.
PickthalBut if they measure unto them or weight for them, they cause them loss.
Arberry but, when they measure for them or weigh for them, do skimp.
ShakirBut when they measure out to others or weigh out for them, they are deficient.
Sarwarbut when they measure or weigh, give less.
KhalifaBut when giving them the measures or weights, they cheat.
Hilali/KhanAnd when they have to give by measure or weight to men, give less than due.
H/K/SaheehBut if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.
Malikbut when they give by measure or by weight to others, they give less than due.[3]
QXPBut give less than due when giving them by measure or weight. (Or diminish the recompense of the laborer).
Maulana AliAnd when they measure out to others or weigh out for them, they give less than is due.

83:4 الايظن اولئك انهم مبعوثون


TransliterationAla yathunnu ola-ika annahum mabAAoothoona
LiteralDo those not think/assume that they are being resurrected/revived?

Yusuf AliDo they not think that they will be called to account?-
PickthalDo such (men) not consider that they will be raised again
Arberry Do those not think that they shall be raised up
ShakirDo not these think that they shall be raised again
SarwarDo they not realize that they will be resurrected
KhalifaDo they not know that they will be resurrected?

83:6 يوم يقوم الناس لرب العالمين


TransliterationYawma yaqoomu alnnasu lirabbi alAAalameena
LiteralA day/time the people stand to the creations all together's/(universes') Lord.

Yusuf AliA Day when (all) mankind will stand before the Lord of the Worlds?
PickthalThe day when (all) mankind stand before the Lord of the Worlds?
Arberry a day when mankind shall stand before the Lord of all Being?
ShakirThe day on which men shall stand before the Lord of the worlds?
Sarwarwhen mankind will stand before the Lord of the Universe?.
KhalifaThat is the day when all people will stand before the Lord of the universe.
Hilali/KhanThe Day when (all) mankind will stand before the Lord of the Alameen (mankind, jinns and all that exists)?
H/K/SaheehThe Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?
Malika Day when all mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?[6]

83:7 كلا ان كتاب الفجار لفي سجين


TransliterationKalla inna kitaba alfujjari lafee sijjeenin
LiteralNo but that truly the debauchers'/corrupters' Book/judgment (is) in (E) Sijjin .

Yusuf AliNay! Surely the record of the wicked is (preserved) in Sijjin.
PickthalNay, but the record of the vile is in Sijjin -
Arberry No indeed; the Book of the libertines is in Sijjin;
ShakirNay! most surely the record of the wicked is in the Sijjin.
SarwarWoe to them! Let them know that the records of the sinner's deeds are in Sijin.
KhalifaIndeed, the book of the wicked is in Sijjeen.
Hilali/KhanNay! Truly, the Record (writing of the deeds) of the Fujjar (disbelievers, sinners, evil-doers and wicked) is (preserved) in Sijjeen.
H/K/SaheehNo! Indeed, the record of the wicked is in sijjeen.
MalikIndeed not! The record of the wicked is in Sijjeen (prison register),[7]
QXPNay, behold, the record of the dividers of humanity is in 'Sijjin'.
Maulana AliNay, surely the record of the wicked is in the prison.

Qaribullah No indeed, the Book of the immoral is in Sijjeen.

83:8 وماادراك ماسجين


TransliterationWama adraka ma sijjeenun
LiteralAnd what made you know/informed you what (is) Sijjin ?

Yusuf AliAnd what will explain to thee what Sijjin is?
PickthalAh! what will convey unto thee what Sijjin is! -
Arberry and what shall teach thee what is Sijjin?
ShakirAnd what will make you know what the Sijjin is?
SarwarWould that you knew what Sijin is!?.
KhalifaDo you know what Sijjeen is?
Hilali/KhanAnd what will make you know what Sijjeen is?
H/K/SaheehAnd what can make you know what is sijjeen?
Malikwhat will explain to you, what the Sijjeen is?[8]

LiteralA written/branded/inscribed Book .

Yusuf Ali(There is) a Register (fully) inscribed.
PickthalA written record.
Arberry A book inscribed.
ShakirIt is a written book.
SarwarIt is a comprehensively written Book (of records).
KhalifaA numerically structured book.
Hilali/KhanA Register inscribed.
H/K/SaheehIt is [their destination recorded in] a register inscribed.
MalikThis is a written book of hell.[9]
QXPA record indelibly inscribed. ('Sijjin' = Inescapable, guarded record as if it is imprisoned).
Maulana AliIt is a written book.

al-Mutaffifin 083:010

83:10 ويل يومئذ للمكذبين


TransliterationWaylun yawma-ithin lilmukaththibeena
LiteralCalamity/scandal (on) that day to the liars/deniers/falsifiers.

Yusuf AliWoe, that Day, to those that deny-
PickthalWoe unto the repudiators on that day!
Arberry Woe that day unto those who cry it lies,
ShakirWoe on that day to the rejecters,
SarwarWoe, on that day, to those who have rejected God's revelations
KhalifaWoe on that day to the rejectors.
Hilali/KhanWoe, that Day, to those who deny ((Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Day of Resurrection, and Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments)).
H/K/SaheehWoe, that Day, to the deniers,
MalikWoe on that Day to the disbelievers,[10]
QXPAnguish on that Day for those who deny the Truth in practice!

83:11 الذين يكذبون بيوم الدين


TransliterationAllatheena yukaththiboona biyawmi alddeeni
LiteralThose who lie/deny/falsify with the Judgment Day/Resurrection Day .

Yusuf AliThose that deny the Day of Judgment.
PickthalThose who deny the Day of Judgment
Arberry who cry lies to the Day of Doom;
ShakirWho give the lie to the day of judgment.
Sarwarand those who have rejected the Day of Judgment.
KhalifaThey do not believe in the Day of Judgment.
Hilali/KhanThose who deny the Day of Recompense.
H/K/SaheehWho deny the Day of Recompense.
Malikwho deny the Day of Judgment![11]

al-Mutaffifin 083:012

83:12 ومايكذب به الا كل معتد اثيم


TransliterationWama yukaththibu bihi illa kullu muAAtadin atheemin
LiteralAnd none lies/denies/falsifiers with it except every/each transgressor/violator , sinner/criminal.

Yusuf AliAnd none can deny it but the Transgressor beyond bounds the Sinner!
PickthalWhich none denieth save each criminal transgressor,
Arberry and none cries lies to it but every guilty aggressor.
ShakirAnd none gives the lie to it but every exceeder of limits, sinful one
SarwarNo one rejects it except the sinful transgressors
KhalifaNone disbelieves therein except the transgressor, the sinful.
Hilali/KhanAnd none can deny it except every transgressor beyond bounds, (in disbelief, oppression and disobedience of Allah, the sinner!)
H/K/SaheehAnd none deny it except every sinful transgressor.
MalikNone denies it except the sinful transgressor.[12]
QXPAnd none denies it but he who drags down his own progress by crossing the bounds of reason. (The Law of Cause and Effect easily appeals to reason).
Maulana AliAnd none gives the lie to it but every exceeder of limits, every sinful one;
Free MindsAnd none will deny it except every transgressor who knows no bounds.
Qaribullah None belies it except every guilty sinner.

George SaleAnd none denieth the same as falsehood, except every unjust and flagitious person:
JM RodwellNone treat it as a lie, save the transgressor, the criminal,

Asadfor, none gives the lie to it but such as are wont to transgress against all that is [and are] immersed in sin:



al-Mutaffifin 083:013

83:13 اذا تتلى عليه اياتنا قال اساطير الاولين


TransliterationItha tutla AAalayhi ayatuna qala asateeru al-awwaleena
LiteralWhen/if Our verses/evidences are read/recited on him he said: "The first's/beginner's myths/baseless stories ."

Yusuf AliWhen Our Signs are rehearsed to him, he says, "Tales of the ancients!"
PickthalWho, when thou readest unto him Our revelations, saith: (Mere) fables of the men of old.
Arberry When our signs are recited to him, he says, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients!'
ShakirWhen Our communications are recited to him, he says: Stories of those of yore.
Sarwarwho, when listening to Our revelations, say, "These are only ancient legends".
KhalifaWhen our revelations are recited to him, he says, "Tales from the past!"
Hilali/KhanWhen Our Verses (of the Quran) are recited to him he says: "Tales of the ancients!"
H/K/SaheehWhen Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."
MalikWho, when Our revelations are recited to him, says: "These are the tales of the ancient peoples."[13]
QXPWhen Our Messages are conveyed to him, he says, "These are stories of the bygones."
Maulana AliWhen Our messages are recited to him, he says: Stories of those of yore!
Free MindsWhen Our verses are recited to him, he says: "Tales of the ancients!"
Qaribullah When Our verses are recited to him, he says: 'Fictitious tales of the ancients! '

George SaleWho, when our signs are rehearsed unto him, saith, they are fables of the ancients.
JM RodwellWho, when our signs are rehearsed to him, saith, "Tales of the Ancients!"

Asad[and so,] whenever Our messages are conveyed to them, they but say, "Fables of ancient times!"



al-Mutaffifin 083:014

83:14 كلا بل ران على قلوبهم ماكانوا يكسبون


TransliterationKalla bal rana AAala quloobihim ma kanoo yaksiboona
LiteralNo but, rather (it) dominated/overwhelmed on their hearts/minds , what they were gaining/acquiring .

Yusuf AliBy no means! but on their hearts is the stain of the (ill) which they do!
PickthalNay, but that which they have earned is rust upon their hearts.
Arberry No indeed; but that they were earning has rusted upon their hearts.
ShakirNay! rather, what they used to do has become like rust . upon their hearts.
SarwarThey will never have faith. In fact, their hearts are stained from their deeds.
KhalifaIndeed, their hearts have become shielded by their sins.
Hilali/KhanNay! But on their hearts is the Ran (covering of sins and evil deeds) which they used to earn .
H/K/SaheehNo! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning.
MalikOf course not! In fact their misdeeds have caused a covering on their hearts.[14]
QXPNay, but their hearts get corroded by what they have earned. (2:7).
Maulana AliNay, rather, what they earned is rust upon their hearts.
Free MindsNo, a covering has been placed on their hearts for what they have earned.
Qaribullah No indeed! Their own deeds have cast a veil over their hearts.

George SaleBy no means: But rather their lusts have cast a vail over their hearts.
JM RodwellYes; but their own works have got the mastery over their hearts.

AsadNay, but their hearts are corroded by all [the evil] that they were wont to do!



al-Mutaffifin 083:015

83:15 كلا انهم عن ربهم يومئذ لمحجوبون


TransliterationKalla innahum AAan rabbihim yawma-ithin lamahjooboona
LiteralNo but, that they truly are from their Lord (on) that day being prevented (E).

Yusuf AliVerily, from (the Light of) their Lord, that Day, will they be veiled.
PickthalNay, but surely on that day they will be covered from (the mercy of) their Lord.
Arberry No indeed; but upon that day they shall be veiled from their Lord,
ShakirNay! most surely they shall on that day be debarred from their Lord.
SarwarOn the Day of Judgment, they will certainly be barred from the mercy of their Lord.
KhalifaIndeed, they will be isolated, on that day, from their Lord.
Hilali/KhanNay! Surely, they (evil-doers) will be veiled from seeing their Lord that Day.
H/K/SaheehNo! Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be partitioned.
MalikIndeed on that Day, they shall be debarred from the vision of their Lord.[15]
QXPNay, verily, on that Day they will be veiled from (the Light of) their Lord.
Maulana AliNay, surely they are that day debarred form their Lord.
Free MindsNo, they will be blocked from their Lord on that Day.
Qaribullah No indeed, on that Day they shall be veiled from their Lord.

George SaleBy no means. Verily they shall be shut out from their Lord on that day;
JM RodwellYes; they shall be shut out as by a veil from their Lord on that day;

AsadNay, verily, from [the grace of] their Sustainer shall they on that Day be debarred;



al-Mutaffifin 083:016

83:16 ثم انهم لصالوا الجحيم


TransliterationThumma innahum lasaloo aljaheemi
LiteralThen that they truly are entering into the fire/roasting (E) the Hell .

Yusuf AliFurther, they will enter the Fire of Hell.
PickthalThen lo! they verily will burn in hell,
Arberry then they shall roast in Hell.
ShakirThen most surely they shall enter the burning fire.
SarwarThey will suffer the heat of fire
KhalifaThen they will be thrown into Hell.
Hilali/KhanThen, verily they will indeed enter and taste the burning flame of Hell.
H/K/SaheehThen indeed, they will [enter and] burn in Hellfire.
MalikThen they shall be made to enter the hell,[16]
QXPThen, behold, they shall enter the Blazing Fire. ('Jahim' = Insurmountable Barrier = Bar to progress = Obstruction that halts = Halting of evolution = Mere survival = Hellfire = Flames of anguish = Fire of regret).
Maulana AliThen they will surely enter the burning Fire.
Free MindsThen they will be entered into the Hell.
Qaribullah Then they shall roast in Hell,

George Saleand they shall be sent into hell to be burned:
JM RodwellThen shall they be burned in Hell-fire:

Asadand then, behold, they shall enter the blazing fire



al-Mutaffifin 083:017

83:17 ثم يقال هذا الذي كنتم به تكذبون


TransliterationThumma yuqalu hatha allathee kuntum bihi tukaththiboona
LiteralThen (it) will be said: "That (is) what you were with it lying/denying/falsifying."

Yusuf AliFurther, it will be said to them: "This is the (reality) which ye rejected as false!
PickthalAnd it will be said (unto them): This is that which ye used to deny.
Arberry Then it shall be said to them, 'This is that you cried lies to.'
ShakirThen shall it be said: This is what you gave the lie to.
Sarwarand who will be told, "This is what you had called a lie".
KhalifaThey will be told, "This is what you used to deny."
Hilali/KhanThen, it will be said to them: "This is what you used to deny!"
H/K/SaheehThen it will be said [to them], "This is what you used to deny."
Malikand told: "This is what you used to deny."[17]
QXPAnd it will be said, "This is that which you used to deny."
Maulana AliThen it will be said: This is what you gave the lie to.
Free MindsThen it will be said: "This is what you used to deny!"
Qaribullah and it will be said to them: 'This is that which you belied! '

George SaleThen shall it be said unto them, by the infernal guards, this is what ye denied as a falsehood.
JM RodwellThen shall it be said to them, "This is what ye deemed a lie."

Asadand be told: "This is the [very thing] to which you were wont to give the lie!"



al-Mutaffifin 083:018

83:18 كلا ان كتاب الابرار لفي عليين


TransliterationKalla inna kitaba al-abrari lafee AAilliyyeena
LiteralNo but, that truly the righteous'/charitable' Book/judgment (is) in (E) Eley'yeen/height/elevation.

Yusuf AliDay, verily the record of the Righteous is (preserved) in 'Illiyin.
PickthalNay, but the record of the righteous is in 'Illiyin -
Arberry No indeed; the book of the pious is in Illiyun;
ShakirNay! Most surely the record of the righteous shall be in the Iliyin.
SarwarHowever, the records of the deeds of the virtuous ones will certainly be in Illiyin.
KhalifaIndeed, the book of the righteous will be in `Elleyyeen.
Hilali/KhanNay! Verily, the Record (writing of the deeds) of Al-Abrar (the pious who fear Allah and avoid evil), is (preserved) in Illiyyoon.
H/K/SaheehNo! Indeed, the record of the righteous is in illiyyun.
MalikBut, surely the record of the righteous is in `Illiyeen (register of exalted ones),[18]
QXPNay, behold, the record of those who made room for others in the community is in 'Illiyin'. ('Birr' = Virtue = Make expanse = Make room for others in the society = Help people to adjust and make progress in a new environment = Exponential growth).
Maulana AliNay, surely the record of the righteous is in the highest places.
Free MindsNo, the record of the pious is in Elliyeen.
Qaribullah But, the Book of the righteous is in the 'Illiyoon.

JM RodwellEven so. But the register of the righteous is in Illiyoun.

AsadNAY, VERILY - the record of the truly virtuous is [set down] in a mode most lofty!

83:19 وماادراك ماعليون


TransliterationWama adraka ma AAilliyyoona
LiteralAnd what made you know/informed you what (is) Eley'yoon/highest places ?

Yusuf AliAnd what will explain to thee what 'Illiyun is?
PickthalAh, what will convey unto thee what 'Illiyin is! -
Arberry and what shall teach thee what is Illiyun?
ShakirAnd what will make you know what the highest Iliyin is?
SarwarWould that you knew what Illiyin is!
KhalifaDo you know what `Elleyyeen is?
Hilali/KhanAnd what will make you know what Illiyyoon is?
H/K/SaheehAnd what can make you know what is illiyyun?
Malikand what will explain to you, what the `Illiyeen is?[19]
QXPAh! What will convey to you what 'Illiyin' is!
Maulana AliAnd what will make thee know what the highest places are?

83:21 يشهده المقربون


TransliterationYashhaduhu almuqarraboona
LiteralThe neared/closer witness it.

Yusuf AliTo which bear witness those Nearest (to Allah).
PickthalAttested by those who are brought near (unto their Lord).
Arberry witnessed by those brought nigh.
ShakirThose who are drawn near (to Allah) shall witness it.
SarwarThe ones nearest to God will bring it to public.
KhalifaTo be witnessed by those close to Me.
Hilali/KhanTo which bear witness those nearest (to Allah, i.e. the angels).
H/K/SaheehWhich is witnessed by those brought near [to Allah].
Malikattested by those who are nearest to Allah (angels).[21]
QXPThese near ones (to Allah) find it open before them.
Maulana AliThose drawn near (to Allah) witness it.
Free MindsTo be witnessed by those brought near.
Qaribullah witnessed by those who are near (to Allah).

al-Mutaffifin 083:022

83:22 ان الابرار لفي نعيم


TransliterationInna al-abrara lafee naAAeemin
LiteralThat truly the righteous/charitable (are) in (E) blessing/goodness .

Yusuf AliTruly the Righteous will be in Bliss:
PickthalLo! the righteous verily are in delight,
Arberry Surely the pious shall be in bliss,
ShakirMost surely the righteous shall be in bliss,
SarwarThe virtuous will live in bliss,
KhalifaThe righteous have deserved bliss.
Hilali/KhanVerily, Al-Abrar (the pious who fear Allah and avoid evil) will be in delight (Paradise).
H/K/SaheehIndeed, the righteous will be in pleasure
MalikSurely the righteous will be in bliss,[22]
QXPBehold, those who made room in the society for others, verily, are in Blissful delight.
Maulana AliSurely the righteous are in bliss,
Free MindsThe pious are in Paradise.
Qaribullah The righteous shall indeed be blissful,

George SaleVerily the righteous shall dwell among delights:
JM RodwellSurely, among delights shall the righteous dwell!

AsadBehold, [in the life to come] the truly virtuous will indeed be in bliss:



al-Mutaffifin 083:023

83:23 على الارائك ينظرون


TransliterationAAala al-ara-iki yanthuroona
LiteralOn the luxurious beds/couches they look/watch .

Yusuf AliOn Thrones (of Dignity) will they command a sight (of all things):
PickthalOn couches, gazing,
Arberry upon couches gazing;
ShakirOn thrones, they shall gaze;
Sarwarreclining on couches, reviewing (the bounties given to them).
KhalifaOn luxurious furnishings they watch.
Hilali/KhanOn thrones, looking (at all things).
H/K/SaheehOn adorned couches, observing.
Malikreclining on soft couches, looking all around,[23]
QXPOn beautiful thrones, they will look up (to the Magnificent Kingdom (76:20)).

Qaribullah (reclining) upon couches they will gaze,

George SaleSeated on couches they shall behold objects of pleasure;

83:24 تعرف في وجوههم نضرة النعيم


TransliterationTaAArifu fee wujoohihim nadrata alnnaAAeemi
LiteralYou know in their faces/fronts the blessing's/goodness' beauty and goodness (brightness).

Yusuf AliThou wilt recognise in their faces the beaming brightness of Bliss.
PickthalThou wilt know in their faces the radiance of delight.
Arberry thou knowest in their faces the radiancy of bliss
ShakirYou will recognize in their faces the brightness of bliss.
SarwarYou can trace on their faces the joy of their bliss.
KhalifaYou recognize in their faces the joy of bliss.
Hilali/KhanYou will recognise in their faces the brightness of delight.
H/K/SaheehYou will recognize in their faces the radiance of pleasure.
Malikand you will recognize in their faces the brightness of bliss.[24]
QXPYou will see their faces glitter with Delight.

al-Mutaffifin 083:025

83:25 يسقون من رحيق مختوم


TransliterationYusqawna min raheeqin makhtoomin
LiteralThey are being given water/drink from sealed/completed pure nectar .

Yusuf AliTheir thirst will be slaked with Pure Wine sealed:
PickthalThey are given to drink of a pure wine, sealed,
Arberry as they are given to drink of a wine sealed
ShakirThey are made to quaff of a pure drink that is sealed (to others).
SarwarThey will be given pure wine out of sealed containers
KhalifaTheir drinks will be spiced with nectar.
Hilali/KhanThey will be given to drink pure sealed wine.
H/K/SaheehThey will be given to drink [pure] wine [which was] sealed.
MalikTheir thirst will be quenched with the choicest sealed wine,[25]
QXPThey will be given a refreshing drink of pure nectar, sealed.
Maulana AliThey are given to drink of a pure drink, sealed.
Free MindsThey are given drink from a pure sealed vial.
Qaribullah They shall be given to drink of a wine that is sealed,

George SaleThey shall be given to drink of pure wine, sealed;

al-Mutaffifin 083:026

83:26 ختامه مسك وفي ذلك فليتنافس المتنافسون


TransliterationKhitamuhu miskun wafee thalika falyatanafasi almutanafisoona
LiteralIts end/conclusion (is) musk/fragrance, and in (for) that so the competitors/rivals should compete/rival.

Yusuf AliThe seal thereof will be Musk: And for this let those aspire, who have aspirations:
PickthalWhose seal is musk - for this let (all) those strive who strive for bliss -
Arberry whose seal is musk -- so after that let the strivers strive --
ShakirThe sealing of it is (with) musk; and for that let the aspirers aspire.
Sarwarwhich have the fragrance of musk. This is the kind of place for which one should really aspire.
KhalifaIts spice is like musk. This is what the competitors should compete for.
Hilali/KhanThe last thereof (that wine) will be the smell of musk, and for this let (all) those strive who want to strive (i.e. hasten earnestly to the obedience of Allah).
H/K/SaheehThe last of it is musk. So for this let the competitors compete.
Malikand the seal will be of musk. Those who wish to excel above others, let them endeavor to excel in this.[26]
QXPThe seal of it is musk. For all this, then, let every aspirant aspire!
Maulana AliThe sealing of it is (with) musk. And for that let the aspirers aspire.
Free MindsIts seal will be of musk, so in that let those who are in competition compete.
Qaribullah its seal is musk, for this let the competitors compete;

George Salethe seal whereof shall be musk: And to this let those aspire, who aspire to happiness:
JM RodwellThe seal of musk. For this let those pant who pant for bliss-

Asadpouring forth with a fragrance of musk. To that [wine of paradise], then, let all such aspire as [are willing to] aspire to things of high account:



al-Mutaffifin 083:027

83:27 ومزاجه من تسنيم


TransliterationWamizajuhu min tasneemin
LiteralAnd its mixture/blend (is) from paradises' valuable water.

Yusuf AliWith it will be (given) a mixture of Tasnim:
PickthalAnd mixed with water of Tasnim,
Arberry and whose mixture is Tasnim,
ShakirAnd the admixture of it is a water of Tasnim,
SarwarWith the wine is a drink from Tasnim,
KhalifaMixed into it will be special flavors.
Hilali/KhanIt (that wine) will be mixed with Tasneem.
H/K/SaheehAnd its mixture is of Tasneem,
MalikThat wine shall have a mixture of Tasnim,[27]
QXPFor, it consists of Nobility. ('Tasnim' = 'Tashrif' = Nobility = Ennobling = Hosting in nobility = Exalting = Imparting honor = Raising in degree).
Maulana AliAnd it is tempered with water coming from above --
Free MindsAnd its taste will be special.
Qaribullah and its mixture is Tasneem,

George SaleAnd the water mixed therewith shall be of Tasnim,
JM RodwellMingled therewith shall be the waters of Tasnim-

Asadfor it is composed of all that is most exalting



al-Mutaffifin 083:028

83:28 عينا يشرب بها المقربون


TransliterationAAaynan yashrabu biha almuqarraboona
LiteralA water spring/well, the neared/closer drink by (near) it .

Yusuf AliA spring, from (the waters) whereof drink those Nearest to Allah.
PickthalA spring whence those brought near (to Allah) drink.
Arberry a fountain at which do drink those brought nigh.
ShakirA fountain from which drink they who are drawn near (to Allah).
Sarwara spring, the nearest ones to God will drink from it.
KhalifaFrom a spring that is reserved for those close to Me.
Hilali/KhanA spring whereof drink those nearest to Allah.
H/K/SaheehA spring from which those near [to Allah] drink.
Malika spring, at which those nearest to Allah will drink.[28]
QXPA Spring from which the nearest (to Allah) drink.
Maulana AliA fountain from which drink those drawn near (to Allah).
Free MindsA spring where those who are brought near will drink.
Qaribullah a fountain at which those brought near (to their Lord) drink.

George Salea fountain whereof those shall drink who approach near unto the divine presence.
JM RodwellFount whereof they who draw nigh to God shall drink.

Asada source [of bliss] whereof those who are drawn close unto God shall drink.



al-Mutaffifin 083:029

83:29 ان الذين اجرموا كانوا من الذين امنوا يضحكون


TransliterationInna allatheena ajramoo kanoo mina allatheena amanoo yadhakoona
LiteralThat truly those who committed crimes/sins were laughing/wondering from (about) those who believed.

Yusuf AliThose in sin used to laugh at those who believed,
PickthalLo! the guilty used to laugh at those who believed,
Arberry Behold, the sinners were laughing at the believers,
ShakirSurely they who are guilty used to laugh at those who believe.
SarwarThe sinners had been laughing at the believers.
KhalifaThe wicked used to laugh at those who believed.
Hilali/KhanVerily! (During the worldly life) those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed.
H/K/SaheehIndeed, those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed.
MalikDuring their life on earth, the culprits used to mock at the believers,[29]
QXPBehold, those who thrived on others' toil used to laugh at those who had attained belief.
Maulana AliSurely they who are guilty used to laugh at those who believe.
Free MindsThose who were criminals used to laugh at those who had believed.
Qaribullah The sinners laughed at the believers

George SaleThey who act wickedly laugh the true believers to scorn;
JM RodwellThe sinners indeed laugh the faithful to scorn:

AsadBEHOLD, those who have abandoned themselves to sin are wont to laugh at such as have attained to faith



al-Mutaffifin 083:030

83:30 واذا مروا بهم يتغامزون


TransliterationWa-itha marroo bihim yataghamazoona
LiteralAnd when/if they passed by them, they signal/wink to each other.

Yusuf AliAnd whenever they passed by them, used to wink at each other (in mockery);
PickthalAnd wink one to another when they passed them;
Arberry when them passed them by winking at one another,
ShakirAnd when they passed by them, they winked at one another.
SarwarWhen passing by them, they would wink at one another
KhalifaWhen they passed by them, they used to poke fun.
Hilali/KhanAnd whenever they passed by them, used to wink one to another (in mockery);
H/K/SaheehAnd when they passed by them, they would exchange derisive glances.
Malikand wink at one another as they passed them by.[30]
QXPAnd whenever they passed by the believers they winked at each other in sarcasm. (Look, these people 'waste' their wealth and person on strangers).
Maulana AliAnd when they passed by them, they winked at one another,
Free MindsAnd when they passed by them they used to wink to each other.
Qaribullah and winked at one another as they passed them by.

George Saleand when they pass by them, they wink at one another:
JM RodwellAnd when they pass by them they wink at one another,-

Asadand whenever they pass by them, they wink at one another [derisively];



al-Mutaffifin 083:031

83:31 واذا انقلبوا الى اهلهم انقلبوا فكهين


TransliterationWa-itha inqalaboo ila ahlihimu inqalaboo fakiheena
LiteralAnd when/if they returned to their people/family , they returned enjoying/humorous .

Yusuf AliAnd when they returned to their own people, they would return jesting;
PickthalAnd when they returned to their own folk, they returned jesting;
Arberry and when they returned to their people they returned blithely,
ShakirAnd when they returned to their own followers they returned exulting.
Sarwarand, on returning to their people, boast about what they had done.
KhalifaWhen they got together with their people, they used to joke.
Hilali/KhanAnd when they returned to their own people, they would return jesting;
H/K/SaheehAnd when they returned to their people, they would return jesting.
MalikWhen they returned to their own people they returned jesting.[31]
QXPAnd when they returned to their own folk, they used to tell jokes about them.
Maulana AliAnd when they returned to their people, they returned exulting.
Free MindsAnd when they returned to their people, they would return jesting.
Qaribullah When they returned to their people they returned jesting;

George SaleAnd when they turn aside to their people, they turn aside making scurrilous jests:
JM RodwellAnd when they return to their own people, they return jesting,

Asadand whenever they return to people of their own kind, they return full of jests;



al-Mutaffifin 083:032

83:32 واذا راوهم قالوا ان هؤلاء لضالون


TransliterationWa-itha raawhum qaloo inna haola-i ladalloona
LiteralAnd when/if they saw them they said: "That truly, those are misguided (E)."

Yusuf AliAnd whenever they saw them, they would say, "Behold! These are the people truly astray!"
PickthalAnd when they saw them they said: Lo! these have gone astray.
Arberry and when they saw them they said, 'Lo, these men are astray!'
ShakirAnd when they saw them, they said: Most surely these are in error;
SarwarOn seeing the believers, they would say, "These people have gone astray".
KhalifaWhenever they saw them, they said, "These people are far astray!
Hilali/KhanAnd when they saw them, they said: "Verily! These have indeed gone astray!"
H/K/SaheehAnd when they saw them, they would say, "Indeed, those are truly lost."
MalikAnd when they saw the believers, they used to say: "These are the people who have surely gone astray,"[32]
QXPAnd whenever they saw the believers they said, "Behold, these people have indeed gone astray (wandering in unmarked valleys of life)."
Maulana AliAnd when they saw them, they said: Surely these are in error --
Free MindsAnd if they see them they Say: "These are indeed misguided!"
Qaribullah and when they saw them said: 'These are they who are astray! '

George SaleAnd when they see them, they say, verily these are mistaken men.
JM RodwellAnd when they see them they say, "These are the erring ones."

Asadand whenever they see those [who believe,] they say, "Behold, these [people] have indeed gone astray!"



al-Mutaffifin 083:033

83:33 وماارسلوا عليهم حافظين


TransliterationWama orsiloo AAalayhim hafitheena
LiteralAnd they were not sent on them protecting/observing .

Yusuf AliBut they had not been sent as keepers over them!
PickthalYet they were not sent as guardians over them.
Arberry Yet they were not sent as watchers over them.
ShakirAnd they were not sent to be keepers over them.
SarwarNo one has appointed them to watch over the believers.
Khalifa"They have no such thing as (invisible) guards."
Hilali/KhanBut they (disbelievers, sinners) had not been sent as watchers over them (the believers).
H/K/SaheehBut they had not been sent as guardians over them.
Malikalthough they had not been sent as guardians over them.[33]
QXPYet, they have not been sent as watchers over them.
Maulana AliAnd they were not sent as keepers over them.
Free MindsBut they were not sent over them as caretakers.
Qaribullah Yet they were not sent to be their guardians.

George SaleBut they are not sent to be keepers over them.
JM RodwellAnd yet they have no mission to be their guardians.

AsadAnd, withal, they have no call to watch over [the beliefs of] others. . .



al-Mutaffifin 083:034

83:34 فاليوم الذين امنوا من الكفار يضحكون


TransliterationFaalyawma allatheena amanoo mina alkuffari yadhakoona
LiteralSo the day/today those who believed are laughing/wondering from (about) the disbelievers.

Yusuf AliBut on this Day the Believers will laugh at the Unbelievers:
PickthalThis day it is those who believe who have the laugh of disbelievers,
Arberry So today the believers are laughing at the unbelievers,
ShakirSo today those who believe shall laugh at the unbelievers;
SarwarOn the Day of Judgment, the believers will laugh at the disbelievers
KhalifaToday, those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers.
Hilali/KhanBut this Day (the Day of Resurrection) those who believe will laugh at the disbelievers
H/K/SaheehSo Today those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers,
MalikOn that Day, the believers shall be laughing at the unbelievers,[34]
QXPThat Day those who have chosen to be graced with belief will be in a position to laugh at the deniers (but they won't. (7:43), (15:47)).
Maulana AliSo this day those who believe laugh at the disbelievers --
Free MindsAnd today, those who had believed are laughing at the rejecters!
Qaribullah But on this Day the believers will laugh at the unbelievers

George SaleWherefore one day the true believers, in their turn, shall laugh the infidels to scorn:
JM RodwellTherefore, on that day the faithful shall laugh the infidels to scorn,

AsadBut on the Day [of Judgment], they who had attained to faith will [be able to] laugh at the [erstwhile] deniers of the truth:



al-Mutaffifin 083:035

83:35 على الارائك ينظرون


TransliterationAAala al-ara-iki yanthuroona
LiteralOn the luxurious beds/couches they (are) looking/watching .

Yusuf AliOn Thrones (of Dignity) they will command (a sight) (of all things).
PickthalOn high couches, gazing.
Arberry upon couches gazing.
ShakirOn thrones, they will look.
Sarwarwhile reclining on couches and reviewing (the bounties given to them).
KhalifaOn luxurious furnishings they watch.
Hilali/KhanOn (high) thrones, looking (at all things).
H/K/SaheehOn adorned couches, observing.
Malikas they recline on couches and gaze at them:[35]
QXPOn beautiful thrones, they will look up (to the Magnificent Kingdom (76:20)).

Qaribullah as they (recline) upon their couches and gaze (around them).

George SaleLying on couches they shall look down upon them in hell.

al-Mutaffifin 083:036

83:36 هل ثوب الكفار ماكانوا يفعلون


TransliterationHal thuwwiba alkuffaru ma kanoo yafAAaloona
LiteralDid the disbelievers become rewarded/replaced what they were making/doing ?462

Yusuf AliWill not the Unbelievers have been paid back for what they did?
PickthalAre not the disbelievers paid for what they used to do?
Arberry Have the unbelievers been rewarded what they were doing?
ShakirSurely the disbelievers are rewarded as they did.
SarwarWill not the disbelievers then be duly recompensed for their laughing at the believers?.
KhalifaMost assuredly, the disbelievers are requited for what they did.
Hilali/KhanAre not the disbelievers paid (fully) for what they used to do?
H/K/SaheehHave the disbelievers [not] been rewarded [this Day] for what they used to do?
MalikHave not the unbelievers been fully rewarded for what they used to do?[36]
QXPAre these deniers of the Truth being returned anything but their own doings? ('Thawab' = Return on an investment).
Maulana AliSurely the disbelievers are rewarded as they did.
Free MindsHave the rejecters been paid for what they used to do?
Qaribullah Have the unbelievers been rewarded for what they did?

George SaleShall not the infidels be rewarded for that which they have done?
JM RodwellShall not the infidels be recompensed according to their works?

Asad"Are these deniers of the truth being [thus] requited for [aught but] what they were wont to do?"
