56:1 سورة الواقعة بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ اذا وقعت الواقعة

Yusuf AliWhen the Event inevitable cometh to pass,

al-Waqi`ah 056:002

56:2 ليس لوقعتها كاذبة


TransliterationLaysa liwaqAAatiha kathibatun
Literal(There) is not to its falling/happening a liar/deniance/falsehood.

Yusuf AliThen will no (soul) entertain falsehood concerning its coming.
PickthalThere is no denying that it will befall -
Arberry (and none denies its descending)
ShakirThere is no belying its coming to pass--
Sarwarno soul will deny its coming.
KhalifaNothing can stop it from happening.
Hilali/KhanAnd there can be no denying of its befalling.
H/K/SaheehThere is, at its occurrence, no denial.
Malik- no one will be able to deny its coming to pass[2]
QXPNone could, then, deny its unfolding.
Maulana AliThere is no belying its coming to pass --

George Saleno soul shall charge the prediction of its coming with falsehood:
JM RodwellNone shall treat that sudden coming as a lie:

Asadthere will be nought that could give the lie to its having come to pass,



al-Waqi`ah 056:003

56:3 خافضة رافعة


TransliterationKhafidatun rafiAAatun
LiteralLowering/reducing, raising/removing away.

Yusuf Ali(Many) will it bring low; (many) will it exalt;
PickthalAbasing (some), exalting (others);
Arberry abasing, exalting,
ShakirAbasing (one party), exalting (the other),
SarwarIt will abase some and exalt others.
KhalifaIt will lower some, and raise others.
Hilali/KhanIt will bring low (some); (and others) it will exalt;
H/K/SaheehIt will bring down [some] and raise up [others].
Malik- then some shall be abased and some exalted.[3]

56:4 اذا رجت الارض رجا


TransliterationItha rujjati al-ardu rajjan
LiteralWhen/if the earth/Planet Earth trembled and quaked , trembling and quaking .

Yusuf AliWhen the earth shall be shaken to its depths,
PickthalWhen the earth is shaken with a shock

ShakirWhen the earth shall be shaken with a (severe) shaking,
SarwarWhen the earth is violently shaken

56:5 وبست الجبال بسا


TransliterationWabussati aljibalu bassan
LiteralAnd the mountains was crumbled/scattered , crumbling/scattering .

Yusuf AliAnd the mountains shall be crumbled to atoms,
PickthalAnd the hills are ground to powder
Arberry and the mountains crumbled
ShakirAnd the mountains shall be made to crumble with (an awful) crumbling,
Sarwarand the mountains crumbled,
KhalifaThe mountains will be wiped out.
Hilali/KhanAnd the mountains will be powdered to dust.
H/K/SaheehAnd the mountains are broken down, crumbling
Malikand the mountains shall be made to crumble with awful crumbling[5]
QXPAnd the tyrannical powers crumble.

George Saleand the mountains shall be dashed in pieces,

al-Waqi`ah 056:006

56:6 فكانت هباء منبثا


TransliterationFakanat habaan munbaththan
LiteralSo it was dust scattered/distributed .

Yusuf AliBecoming dust scattered abroad,
PickthalSo that they become a scattered dust,
Arberry and become a dust, scattered,
ShakirSo that they shall be as scattered dust.
Sarwarthey will become like dust scattered around.
KhalifaAs if they never existed.
Hilali/KhanSo that they will become floating dust particles.
H/K/SaheehAnd become dust dispersing.
Malikand become like scattered dust.[6]

al-Waqi`ah 056:007

56:7 وكنتم ازواجا ثلاثة


TransliterationWakuntum azwajan thalathatan
LiteralAnd you were three kinds .

Yusuf AliAnd ye shall be sorted out into three classes.
PickthalAnd ye will be three kinds:
Arberry and you shall be three bands --
ShakirAnd you shall be three sorts.
SarwarOn that day, you (mankind) will be divided into three groups:
KhalifaYou will be stratified into three kinds.
Hilali/KhanAnd you (all) will be in three kinds (i.e. separate groups).
H/K/SaheehAnd you become [of] three kinds:
MalikThen you shall be divided into three groups:[7]
QXPThen, you shall be three kinds.
Maulana AliAnd you are three sorts.

Qaribullah you shall be divided into three parties,

George Saleand ye shall be separated into three distinct classes:

Asad[on that Day,] then, shall you be [divided into] three kinds.



al-Waqi`ah 056:008

56:8 فاصحاب الميمنة مااصحاب الميمنة


TransliterationFaas-habu almaymanati ma as-habu almaymanati
LiteralSo owners/company/friends (of) the blessing/right (hand), (are) owners/company/friends (of) the blessing/right (hand)!

Yusuf AliThen (there will be) the Companions of the Right Hand;- What will be the Companions of the Right Hand?
Pickthal(First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand?
Arberry Companions of the Right (O Companions of the Right!)
ShakirThen (as to) the companions of the right hand; how happy are the companions of the right hand!
SarwarThe people of the right hand - those whose books of records will be placed in their right hands. How happy they will be!
KhalifaThose who deserved bliss will be in bliss.
Hilali/KhanSo those on the Right Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Records in their right hands), Who will be those on the Right Hand? (As a respect for them, because they will enter Paradise).
H/K/SaheehThen the companions of the right what are the companions of the right?
Malikthose on the right hand - how blessed shall be the people of the right hand;[8]
QXPSo, (firstly) the blessed ones. Oh, how wonderful are the blessed ones! ('Yumn' = Blessing = Bliss = Grace = Right side = Right action (19:52), (28:30), (56:27)).
Maulana AliSo those on the right hand; how (happy) are those on the right-hand!
Free MindsSo those on the right, who will be from those on the right?
Qaribullah Companions of the Right, what are the Companions of the Right?

George SaleThe companions of the right hand; -- how happy shall the companions of the right hand be! --
JM RodwellThen the people of the right hand-Oh! how happy shall be the people of the right hand!

AsadThus, there shall be such as will have attained to what is right: [Lit., "those [or "the people"] of the right side": see note on 74:39.] oh, how [happy] will be they who have attained to what is right!



al-Waqi`ah 056:009

56:9 واصحاب المشأمة مااصحاب المشأمة


TransliterationWaas-habu almash-amati ma as-habu almash-amati
LiteralAnd owners/company/friends (of) the bad omen/left side/misfortune , (are) owners/company/ friends (of) the bad/omen/left side/misfortune .

Yusuf AliAnd the Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand?
PickthalAnd (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand?
Arberry Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!)
ShakirAnd (as to) the companions of the left hand; how wretched are the companions of the left hand!
SarwarThe people of the left hand - those whose books of records will be placed in their left hands. How miserable they will be!
KhalifaThose who deserved misery will be in misery.
Hilali/KhanAnd those on the Left Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Record in their left hands), Who will be those on the Left Hand? (As a disgrace for them, because they will enter Hell).

Malikthose on the left hand - how damned shall be the people of the left hand;[9]
QXPAnd (secondly) the unblessed ones. Ah, how unfortunate are the unblessed ones! ('Mash'amah, from 'Shimal' = Unblessed = Left side = Wrong action (18:17), (56:41), (69:25)).
Maulana AliAnd those on the left; how (wretched) are those on the left!

Qaribullah Companions of the Left, what are the Companions of the Left?

George SaleAnd the companions of the left hand; -- how miserable shall the companions of the left hand be!
JM RodwellAnd the people of the left hand-Oh! how wretched shall be the people of the left hand!

AsadAnd there shall be such as will have lost themselves in evil: oh, how [unhappy] will be they who have lost themselves in evil! [Lit., "those [or "the people"] of the left side". Similarly to the use of the expression maymanah as a metonym for "attaining to what is right", the term mashamah is used to denote "losing oneself in evil" (e.g., in 90:19). The origin of both these metonyms is based on the belief of the pre-Islamic Arabs that future events could be predicted by observing the direction of the flight of birds at certain times: if they flew to the right, the event in question promised to be auspicious; if to the left, the contrary. This ancient belief was gradually absorbed by linguistic usage, so that "right" and "left" became more or less synonymous with "auspicious" and "inauspicious". In the idiom of the Quran, these two concepts have been deepened into "righteousness" and "unrighteousness", respectively.]



al-Waqi`ah 056:010

56:10 والسابقون السابقون


TransliterationWaalssabiqoona alssabiqoona
LiteralAnd the racing/surpassing , (are) the racing/surpassing .

Yusuf AliAnd those Foremost (in Faith) will be Foremost (in the Hereafter).
PickthalAnd the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race:
Arberry and the Outstrippers: the Outstrippers
ShakirAnd the foremost are the foremost,
SarwarThe foremost ones (in faith and virtue) - the foremost ones in receiving their reward.
KhalifaThen there is the elite of the elite.
Hilali/KhanAnd those foremost ((in Islamic Faith of Monotheism and in performing righteous deeds) in the life of this world on the very first call for to embrace Islam,) will be foremost (in Paradise).
H/K/SaheehAnd the forerunners, the forerunners
Malikand foremost shall be the foremost.[10]
QXPAnd (thirdly) the foremost are the foremost! (Those who led the race in doing good (55:63), (57:10)).

al-Waqi`ah 056:011

56:11 اولئك المقربون


TransliterationOla-ika almuqarraboona
LiteralThose are the neared/closer.

Yusuf AliThese will be those Nearest to Allah:
PickthalThose are they who will be brought nigh
Arberry those are they brought nigh the Throne,
ShakirThese are they who are drawn nigh (to Allah),
Sarwar(The foremost ones) will be the nearest ones to God
KhalifaThey are those who will be closest (to God).
Hilali/KhanThese will be those nearest to Allah.
H/K/SaheehThose are the ones brought near [to Allah]
MalikThey will be nearest to Allah,[11]
QXPThey are the ones near (to their Lord), in both lives.

56:12 في جنات النعيم

LiteralIn treed gardens/paradises (of) the comfort and ease .

Arberry in the Gardens of Delight
ShakirIn the gardens of bliss.
Sarwarin the beautiful Paradise.

56:13 ثلة من الاولين

LiteralA group from the first/beginners.

Yusuf AliA number of people from those of old,
PickthalA multitude of those of old
Arberry (a throng of the ancients
ShakirA numerous company from among the first,
SarwarMany of them will be from the ancient people
KhalifaMany from the first generations.
Hilali/KhanA multitude of those (foremost) will be from the first generations (who embraced Islam).

MalikMost of them will be from the former[13]

56:14 وقليل من الاخرين

56:15 على سرر موضونة


TransliterationAAala sururin mawdoonatin
LiteralOn royal beds/sofas lightly woven .

Yusuf Ali(They will be) on Thrones encrusted (with gold and precious stones),
PickthalOn lined couches,
Arberry upon close-wrought couches
ShakirOn thrones decorated,
SarwarThey will recline on jewelled couches
KhalifaOn luxurious furnishings.
Hilali/Khan(They will be) on thrones woven with gold and precious stones,

56:16 متكئين عليها متقابلين

Arberry reclining upon them, set face to face,
ShakirReclining on them, facing one another.
Sarwarfacing one another.
KhalifaEnjoying everything, they will be neighbors.

al-Waqi`ah 056:017

56:17 يطوف عليهم ولدان مخلدون


TransliterationYatoofu AAalayhim wildanun mukhalladoona
LiteralImmortal/eternal children/boys circle/walk around on them.

Yusuf AliRound about them will (serve) youths of perpetual (freshness),
PickthalThere wait on them immortal youths
Arberry immortal youths going round about them
ShakirRound about them shall go youths never altering in age,
SarwarImmortal youths will serve them
KhalifaServing them will be immortal servants.
Hilali/KhanThey will be served by immortal boys,
H/K/SaheehThere will circulate among them young boys made eternal
Malikand there shall wait on them the eternal youths[17]

al-Waqi`ah 056:018

56:18 باكواب واباريق وكاس من معين


TransliterationBi-akwabin waabareeqa waka/sin min maAAeenin
LiteralWith cups and jugs and a cup/wine flowing easily and plentifully.

Yusuf AliWith goblets, (shining) beakers, and cups (filled) out of clear-flowing fountains:
PickthalWith bowls and ewers and a cup from a pure spring
Arberry with goblets, and ewers, and a cup from a spring
ShakirWith goblets and ewers and a cup of pure drink;
Sarwarwith goblets, jugs and cups of crystal clear wine

Asadwith goblets, and ewers, and cups filled with water from unsullied springs [This is evidently a symbolic allusion to the imperishable quality - the eternal youthfulness, as it were - of all the experiences in the state described as "paradise". (See also next two notes.)]



al-Waqi`ah 056:019

56:19 لايصدعون عنها ولاينزفون


TransliterationLa yusaddaAAoona AAanha wala yunzifoona
LiteralThey do not get headache from it, and nor they be drunk/exhausted .

Yusuf AliNo after-ache will they receive therefrom, nor will they suffer intoxication:
PickthalWherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness,
Arberry (no brows throbbing, no intoxication)
ShakirThey shall not be affected with headache thereby, nor shall they get exhausted,
Sarwarwhich will not cause them any intoxication or illness.
KhalifaThey never run out, nor do they get bored.
Hilali/KhanWherefrom they will get neither any aching of the head, nor any intoxication.
H/K/SaheehNo headache will they have therefrom, nor will they be intoxicated
Malik- which will neither pain their heads nor take away their senses.[19]
QXPWherefrom they get no headache nor beclouding of mind. (37:47).
Maulana AliThey are not affected with headache thereby, nor are they intoxicated,

Qaribullah that will neither make the head throb, nor intoxicate,

al-Waqi`ah 056:020

56:20 وفاكهة مما يتخيرون


TransliterationWafakihatin mimma yatakhayyaroona
LiteralAnd fruits from what they prefer/choose.

Yusuf AliAnd with fruits, any that they may select:
PickthalAnd fruit that they prefer
Arberry and such fruits as they shall choose,
ShakirAnd fruits such as they choose,
SarwarAlso, they will be served with the fruits of their choice
KhalifaFruits of their choice.
Hilali/KhanAnd fruit; that they may choose.

MalikThey shall have fruits of their own choice[20]

56:21 ولحم طير مما يشتهون


TransliterationWalahmi tayrin mimma yashtahoona
LiteralAnd bird's meat from what they desire .

Yusuf AliAnd the flesh of fowls, any that they may desire.
PickthalAnd flesh of fowls that they desire.
Arberry and such flesh of fowl as they desire,
ShakirAnd the flesh of fowl such as they desire.
Sarwarand the flesh of birds, as they desire.
KhalifaMeat of birds that they desire.
Hilali/KhanAnd the flesh of fowls that they desire.
H/K/SaheehAnd the meat of fowl, from whatever they desire.
Malikand flesh of fowls that they may desire,[21]
QXPThe supreme delicacies of life.

Asadand with the flesh of any fowl that they may desire. [Regarding this and any other Quranic description of the joys of paradise, see 32:17 and, in particular, the corresponding note. The famous hadith quoted in that note must be kept in mind when reading any Quranic reference to the state or quality of human life in the hereafter.]



al-Waqi`ah 056:022

56:22 وحور عين


TransliterationWahoorun AAeenun
LiteralAnd eyes with intense blackness of pupils and whiteness (beautifully contrasted).

Yusuf AliAnd (there will be) Companions with beautiful, big, and lustrous eyes,-
PickthalAnd (there are) fair ones with wide, lovely eyes,
Arberry and wide-eyed houris
ShakirAnd pure, beautiful ones,
SarwarThey will have maidens with large, lovely black and white eyes,
KhalifaBeautiful mates.

In a more general sense, hawar signifies simply "whiteness" (Asas) or, as a moral qualification, "purity" (cf. Tabari, Razi and Ibn Kathir in their explanations of the term hawariyyun in 3:52). Hence, the compound expression hurin signifies, approximately, "pure beings [or, more specifically, "companions pure"], most beautiful of eye" (which latter is the meaning of in, the plural of ayan). In his comments on the identical expression in 52:20, Razi observes that inasmuch as a person's eye reflects his soul more clearly than any other part of the human body, in may be understood as "rich of soul" or "soulful". As regards the term hur in its more current, feminine connotation, quite a number of the earliest Quran-commentators - among them Al-Hasan al-Basri - understood it as signifying no more and no less than "the righteous among the women of the human kind" (Tabari) - "[even] those toothless old women of yours whom God will resurrect as new beings" (Al-Hasan, as quoted by Razi in his comments on 44:54). (In the context of this interpretation, Zamakhshari quotes also 36:56, which thus refers to the inmates of paradise: "... in happiness will they and their spouses on couches recline". There is no doubt that the "spouses raised high" - i.e., to the status of the blest - are identical with the hur mentioned in verse 22 above as well as in 44:54, 52:20 and 55:72.]

56:44 لابارد ولاكريم


TransliterationLa baridin wala kareemin
LiteralNot cool/cold, and nor hospitable/kind .

Yusuf AliNothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please:
PickthalNeither cool nor refreshing.
Arberry neither cool, neither goodly;
ShakirNeither cool nor honorable.
Sarwarneither cold nor graceful in shape.
KhalifaNever cool, never tolerable.
Hilali/Khan(That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good,
H/K/SaheehNeither cool nor beneficial.
Malikneither cool nor refreshing.[44]
QXPNeither coolness of contentment nor honor of accomplishment.

al-Waqi`ah 056:045

56:45 انهم كانوا قبل ذلك مترفين


TransliterationInnahum kanoo qabla thalika mutrafeena
LiteralThat they truly were before that luxuriated, ungrateful and arrogant.

Yusuf AliFor that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury),
PickthalLo! heretofore they were effete with luxury
Arberry and before that they lived at ease,
ShakirSurely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty.
SarwarThey had lived in luxury before this
KhalifaThey used to be rich.
Hilali/KhanVerily, before that, they indulged in luxury,
H/K/SaheehIndeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence,
MalikFor they lived in comfort before meeting this fate.[45]
QXPBehold, before this, they were sunk in luxury, exploiting the poor.

al-Waqi`ah 056:046

56:46 وكانوا يصرون على الحنث العظيم


TransliterationWakanoo yusirroona AAala alhinthi alAAatheemi
LiteralAnd they were persisting/insisting on the sin the great.

Yusuf AliAnd persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme!
PickthalAnd used to persist in the awful sin.
Arberry and persisted in the Great Sin,
ShakirAnd they persisted in the great violation.
Sarwarand persisted in heinous sins.
KhalifaThey insisted on the great blasphemy.
Hilali/KhanAnd were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.)
H/K/SaheehAnd they used to persist in the great violation,

56:47 وكانوا يقولون ائذا متنا وكنا ترابا وعظاما ائنا لمبعوثون


TransliterationWakanoo yaqooloona a-itha mitna wakunna turaban waAAithaman a-inna lamabAAoothoona
LiteralAnd they were saying: "Is (it that) if we died, and we were dust/earth and bones, are we being resurrected/revived?"

Yusuf AliAnd they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?-
PickthalAnd they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again,
Arberry ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up?
ShakirAnd they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised?
SarwarIt was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones?.
KhalifaThey said, "After we die and turn to dust and bones, we get resurrected?
Hilali/KhanAnd they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected?
H/K/SaheehAnd they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?
Malikand used to say: "When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised to life again?[47]
QXPAnd they used to say, "What! When we die and become dust and bones, shall we possibly be raised?
Maulana AliAnd they used to say: When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be rised?
Free MindsAnd they used to Say: "After we die and turn to dust and bones, we will get resurrected?"
Qaribullah and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life?

George SaleAnd they said, after we shall have died, and become dust and bones, shall we surely be raise to life?
JM RodwellAnd were wont to say, What! after we have died, and become dust and bones, shall we be raised?

Asadand would say, "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? -



al-Waqi`ah 056:048

56:48 او اباؤنا الاولون


TransliterationAwa abaona al-awwaloona
LiteralOr (are) our fathers the first/beginners?

56:51 ثم انكم ايها الضالون المكذبون


TransliterationThumma innakum ayyuha alddalloona almukaththiboona
LiteralThen, that you are, you the misguided, the liars/deniers/falsifiers.

Yusuf Ali"Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!-
PickthalThen lo! ye, the erring, the deniers,
Arberry Then you erring ones, you that cried lies,
ShakirThen shall you, O you who err and call it a lie!
SarwarThen you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth
Khalifa"Then you, O disbelieving strayers.
Hilali/Khan"Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)!
H/K/SaheehThen indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers,
MalikThen, "O the mistaken rejecters,[51]

56:52 لاكلون من شجر من زقوم


TransliterationLaakiloona min shajarin min zaqqoomin
LiteralEating exaggerated/gluttons (E) from trees from deadly food.

Yusuf Ali"Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum.
PickthalYe verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum
Arberry you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum,
ShakirMost surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom,
Sarwarwill eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum,
Khalifa"Will eat from the trees of bitterness.
Hilali/Khan"You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqoom.
H/K/SaheehWill be eating from trees of zaqqum
Malikyou shall eat of the Zaqqum tree,[52]
QXPYou will eat the bitter fruit of the tree of your deeds. (37:62), (44:43), (56:52).

Qaribullah you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum.

al-Waqi`ah 056:053

56:53 فمالئون منها البطون


TransliterationFamali-oona minha albutoona
LiteralSo you are filling from it the bellies/insides.

Yusuf Ali"Then will ye fill your insides therewith,
PickthalAnd will fill your bellies therewith;
Arberry and you shall fill therewith your bellies

LiteralSo you are drinking on it from the hot water/red hot coal.

Yusuf Ali"And drink Boiling Water on top of it:
PickthalAnd thereon ye will drink of boiling water,
Arberry and drink on top of that boiling water
ShakirThen drink over it of boiling water;
Sarwarand on top of this you will drink boiling water
Khalifa"Then drinking on top of it hellish drinks.

56:55 فشاربون شرب الهيم


TransliterationFashariboona shurba alheemi
LiteralSo you are drinking the extreme thirst's drink .

Yusuf Ali"Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!"
PickthalDrinking even as the camel drinketh.
Arberry lapping it down like thirsty camels.'
ShakirAnd drink as drinks the thirsty camel.
Sarwarlike a thirsty camel".
Khalifa"Then adding drinks of sand."
Hilali/Khan"So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!"
H/K/SaheehAnd will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels.
Malikyet you shall drink it like a thirsty camel."[55]
QXPAnd indeed drink as the camel with false thirst drinks." (Greed could never give you inner contentment (26:225), (102:1-2).
Maulana AliAnd drink as drinks the thirsty camel.

Qaribullah and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels.

George Saleand ye shall drink as a thirsty camel drinketh.
JM RodwellAnd ye shall drink as the thirsty camel drinketh.

Asaddrink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!"



al-Waqi`ah 056:056

56:56 هذا نزلهم يوم الدين


TransliterationHatha nuzuluhum yawma alddeeni
LiteralThat (is) their places of descent (on) the Judgment Day/Resurrection Day .

Yusuf AliSuch will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital!
PickthalThis will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment.
Arberry This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom.
ShakirThis is their entertainment on the day of requital.
SarwarSuch will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment.
KhalifaSuch is their share on the Day of Judgment.
Hilali/KhanThat will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense!
H/K/SaheehThat is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense.
MalikSuch will be their entertainment on the Day of Reckoning.[56]
QXPSuch will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment.
Maulana AliThis is their entertainment on the day of Requital.

al-Waqi`ah 056:057

56:57 نحن خلقناكم فلولا تصدقون


TransliterationNahnu khalaqnakum falawla tusaddiqoona
LiteralWe created you, so if only you believe Me.

Yusuf AliIt is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth?
PickthalWe created you. Will ye then admit the truth?
Arberry We created you; therefore why will you not believe?
ShakirWe have created you, why do you not then assent?
SarwarIt is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth?.
KhalifaWe have created you, if you could only believe!
Hilali/KhanWe created you, then why do you believe not?
H/K/SaheehWe have created you, so why do you not believe?
MalikWe have created you: will you not then testify about Our power of creation?[57]
QXPIt is We Who have created you. Will you not, then, admit the Truth?
Maulana AliWe have created you, why do you not then accept?

Qaribullah We created you, why will you not believe!

George SaleWe have created you: Will ye not therefore believe that We can raise you from the dead?

56:58 افرايتم ماتمنون

LiteralDid you see/understand what you ejaculate/discharge semen/sperm?

Yusuf AliDo ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,-
PickthalHave ye seen that which ye emit?
Arberry Have you considered the seed you spill?
ShakirHave you considered the seed?
SarwarHave you seen sperm?.
KhalifaHave you noted the semen that you produce?
Hilali/KhanThen tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit.
H/K/SaheehHave you seen that which you emit?
MalikHave you ever considered the semen you discharge:[58]
QXPHave you ever considered the male and female seed?
Maulana AliSee you that which you emit?
Free MindsHave you noted the semen that you produce?
Qaribullah Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate?

George SaleWhat think ye? The seed which ye emit,
JM RodwellWhat think ye? The germs of life-

AsadHave you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? [This refers to both the male semen and the female ovum, and thus, by implication, to the awe-inspiring, complex phenomenon of procreation as such.]



al-Waqi`ah 056:059

56:59 ءانتم تخلقونه ام نحن الخالقون


TransliterationAantum takhluqoonahu am nahnu alkhaliqoona
LiteralDo you create it? Or We are the creators?

Yusuf AliIs it ye who create it, or are We the Creators?
PickthalDo ye create it or are We the Creator?
Arberry Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators?
ShakirIs it you that create it or are We the creators?
SarwarDid you create it or was it We who created it?.
KhalifaDid you create it, or did we?

al-Waqi`ah 056:060

56:60 نحن قدرنا بينكم الموت ومانحن بمسبوقين


TransliterationNahnu qaddarna baynakumu almawta wama nahnu bimasbooqeena
LiteralWe predestined between you the death/lifelessness, and We are not with being surpassed/preceded .

Yusuf AliWe have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated
PickthalWe mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun,
Arberry We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped;
ShakirWe have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome,
SarwarWe have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us
KhalifaWe have predetermined death for you. Nothing can stop us -
Hilali/KhanWe have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable,
H/K/SaheehWe have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone
MalikIt is We Who have ordained death among you and We are not helpless[60]
QXPWe have designed the Laws of death among you and We are not unable -
Maulana AliWe have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome,
Free MindsWe have predetermined death for you. Nothing can stop Us,
Qaribullah It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed

George SaleWe have decreed death unto you all: And We shall not be prevented.
JM RodwellIt is we who have decreed that death should be among you;

AsadWe have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us



al-Waqi`ah 056:061

56:61 على ان نبدل امثالكم وننشئكم في مالاتعلمون


TransliterationAAala an nubaddila amthalakum wanunshi-akum fee ma la taAAlamoona
LiteralOn that We exchange/replace similar/equal to you, and We create/originate you in what you do not know.

Yusuf Alifrom changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not.
PickthalThat We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not.
Arberry that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not.
ShakirIn order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not.
Sarwarin replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know.
Khalifafrom substituting new generations in your place, and establishing what you do not know.
Hilali/KhanTo transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not.
H/K/SaheehIn that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know.
Malikin replacing you by others like yourselves or transforming you into beings that you do not know.[61]
QXPThat We may change your existence and coming into being in a manner and in an environ you know not.
Maulana AliThat We may change your state and make you grow into what you know not.
Free MindsFrom transforming your forms, and establishing you in what you do not know.
Qaribullah that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know.

George SaleWe are able to substitute others like unto you in your stead, and to produce you again in the condition or form which ye know not.
JM RodwellYet are we not thereby hindered from replacing you with others, your likes, or from producing you again in a form which ye know not!

Asadfrom changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. [Lit., "changing your likenesses (amthal)". However, the term mathal signifies also, tropic­ ally, the state, condition and the qualities (sifat) of a thing or person - in brief, "the nature of his [or its] existence".]



al-Waqi`ah 056:062

56:62 ولقد علمتم النشاة الاولى فلولا تذكرون


TransliterationWalaqad AAalimtumu alnnash-ata al-oola falawla tathakkaroona
LiteralAnd you had (E) known the creation/origination , the first/beginning, so if only you mention/remember ?

Yusuf AliAnd ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises?
PickthalAnd verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect?
Arberry You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember?
ShakirAnd certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind?
SarwarYou certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed?.
KhalifaYou know about the first creation. Do you not remember?
Hilali/KhanAnd indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed?
H/K/SaheehAnd you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember?
MalikYou already know well your first creation, why then do you not take heed?[62]
QXPAnd indeed you know the first coming into being. Why, then, do you not reflect?
Maulana AliAnd certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind?
Free MindsYou have come to know about the first creation. If only you would remember.
Qaribullah You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember!

George SaleYe know the original production by creation; will ye not therefore consider that We are able to reproduce you by resuscitation?
JM RodwellYe have known the first creation: will ye not then reflect?

AsadAnd [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]?



al-Waqi`ah 056:063

56:63 افرايتم ماتحرثون


TransliterationAfaraaytum ma tahruthoona
LiteralDid you see/understand what you cultivate/plant ?

Yusuf AliSee ye the seed that ye sow in the ground?
PickthalHave ye seen that which ye cultivate?
Arberry Have you considered the soil you till?
ShakirHave you considered what you sow?
SarwarHave you seen what you sow?.
KhalifaHave you noted the crops you reap?
Hilali/KhanTell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground.
H/K/SaheehAnd have you seen that [seed] which you sow?
MalikHave you ever considered the seed that you sow in the ground?[63]
QXPHave you thought of the crops that you cultivate?
Maulana AliSee you what you sow?
Free MindsHave you noted the crops you reap?
Qaribullah Ponder upon the soil you till,

George SaleWhat think ye? The grain which ye sow,
JM RodwellWhat think ye? That which ye sow-

AsadHave you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil?



al-Waqi`ah 056:064

56:64 ءانتم تزرعونه ام نحن الزارعون


TransliterationAantum tazraAAoonahu am nahnu alzzariAAoona
LiteralDo you sow/seed/cultivate it ? Or We are the sowers/seeders/cultivators?401

Yusuf AliIs it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause?
PickthalIs it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer?
Arberry Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers?
ShakirIs it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth?
SarwarDo you make it grow or is it We who make it grow?.
KhalifaDid you grow them, or did we?
Hilali/KhanIs it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower?

Yusuf AliWere it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment,

Arberry Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting --
ShakirIf We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin tb lament:
SarwarHad We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament,

56:73 نحن جعلناها تذكرة ومتاعا للمقوين

LiteralWe made it a reminder and a long life/enjoyment to the hungry/starving .

Yusuf AliWe have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts.
PickthalWe, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness.
Arberry We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers.
ShakirWe have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert.
SarwarIt is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people.

AsadIt is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us], [Inasmuch as "fire" (in the widest sense of this word) is the source of all light known to man, it is apt to remind him that "God is the light of the heavens and the earth" (see 24:35 and the corresponding notes).] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. [The participial noun muqw is derived from the verb qawiya, "it became deserted" or "desolate". From the same root is derived the noun qawa (or qiwa), which signifies "desert", "wilderness" or "wasteland" as well as "hunger" or "starvation". Hence, muqw denotes "one who is hungry" as well as "one who is lost [or "who wanders"] in a deserted place". In the above verse this expression is evidently used tropically, for it is difficult to imagine that, as some commentators assume, it relates merely to "wayfarers in the desert". My composite rendering of al-muqwin as "all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness", on the other hand, is literal and tropical at the same time, inasmuch as it describes people who are lonely, unfortunate and confused, and who hunger after human warmth and spiritual light.]



al-Waqi`ah 056:074

56:74 فسبح باسم ربك العظيم


TransliterationFasabbih biismi rabbika alAAatheemi
LiteralSo praise/glorify with your Lord's name, the great.

Yusuf AliThen celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme!
PickthalTherefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous.
Arberry Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty.
ShakirTherefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great.
Sarwar(Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One.

SarwarI do not need to swear by the setting of the stars

AsadNAY, I call to witness the coming-down in parts [of this Quran] [Or: "the setting [or "orbiting"] of the stars". The term mawqi (of which mawaqie is the plural) denotes the "time [or "place" or "manner"] at which something comes down". Although many of the commentators think that the phrase mawaqi an-nujum relates to the break-up of the stars at the Last Hour, Ibn Abbas, lkrimah and As-Suddi were definitely of the opinion, strongly supported by the subsequent verses, that this phrase refers to the step-by-step revelation - or "coming-down in parts (nujum )" - of the Quran (cf. Tabari and lbn Kathir; see also note on 53:1). By "calling to witness" the gradual manner of its revelation, the Quran points implicitly to the astounding fact that it has remained free of all inconsistencies and inner contradictions (cf. 4:82 and the corresponding note) despite all the dramatic changes in the Prophet's life during the twenty-three years of the "unfolding" of the divine writ: and this explains, too, the subsequent parenthetic clause (verse 76).] -



al-Waqi`ah 056:076

56:76 وانه لقسم لو تعلمون عظيم


TransliterationWa-innahu laqasamun law taAAlamoona AAatheemun
LiteralAnd that it truly is an oath (E), if you know (it is) great.

Yusuf AliAnd that is indeed a mighty adjuration if ye but knew,-
PickthalAnd lo! that verily is a tremendous oath, if ye but knew -

Hilali/KhanIs it such a talk (this Quran) that you (disbelievers) deny?

MalikWould you scorn a scripture such as this[81]
QXPNow, is it this Hadith that you would hold in low esteem? (To uphold some other hadith).

al-Waqi`ah 056:082

56:82 وتجعلون رزقكم انكم تكذبون


TransliterationWatajAAaloona rizqakum annakum tukaththiboona
LiteralAnd you make/put your provision that you are lying/denying .

Yusuf AliAnd have ye made it your livelihood that ye should declare it false?
PickthalAnd make denial thereof your livelihood?
Arberry and do you make it your living to cry lies?
ShakirAnd to give (it) the lie you make your means of subsistence.
SarwarWould you reject the sustenance that you receive rather than give thanks?.
KhalifaDo you make it your business that you disbelieve?
Hilali/KhanAnd instead (of thanking Allah) for the provision He gives you, on the contrary, you deny Him (by disbelief)!
H/K/SaheehAnd make [the thanks for] your provision that you deny [the Provider]?
Malikand make it’s denying a means of your livelihood?[82]
QXPAnd make its denial your daily bread? (Peddling conjecture as a means of minting money).
Maulana AliAnd make your denial your means of subsistence.

al-Waqi`ah 056:083

56:83 فلولا اذا بلغت الحلقوم


TransliterationFalawla itha balaghati alhulqooma
LiteralSo if only that the throat/pharynx (the death) reached.

Yusuf AliThen why do ye not (intervene) when (the soul of the dying man) reaches the throat,-
PickthalWhy, then, when (the soul) cometh up to the throat (of the dying)
Arberry Why, but when the soul leaps to the throat of the dying
ShakirWhy is it not then that when it (soul) comes up to the throat,
SarwarWhy can you not help a soul dying
KhalifaWhen the time comes and it (your soul) reaches your throat -
Hilali/KhanThen why do you not (intervene) when (the soul of a dying person) reaches the throat?
H/K/SaheehThen why, when the soul at death reaches the throat
MalikWhy is it not then that when you see a dying person’s soul come up to his throat[83]
QXPWhy, then, as the last breath comes up to the throat,

al-Waqi`ah 056:084

56:84 وانتم حينئذ تنظرون


TransliterationWaantum heena-ithin tanthuroona
LiteralAnd you are at that time looking/watching .

Yusuf AliAnd ye the while (sit) looking on,-
PickthalAnd ye are at that moment looking
Arberry and that hour you are watching
ShakirAnd you at that time look on--
Sarwarright before your very eyes?.
Khalifayou will then look around.
Hilali/KhanAnd you at the moment are looking on,
H/K/SaheehAnd you are at that time looking on
Malikwhile you are helplessly watching[84]
QXPAnd as you look on,
Maulana AliAnd you at that time look on --
Free MindsAnd at that moment you look around.
Qaribullah and you are watching at that time

George Saleand ye at the same time are looking on;
JM RodwellAnd when ye are gazing at him,

Asadthe while you are [helplessly] looking on -



al-Waqi`ah 056:085

56:85 ونحن اقرب اليه منكم ولكن لاتبصرون


TransliterationWanahnu aqrabu ilayhi minkum walakin la tubsiroona
LiteralAnd We are nearer/closer to it than you, and but you do not see/understand .

Yusuf AliBut We are nearer to him than ye, and yet see not,-
Pickthal- And We are nearer unto him than ye are, but ye see not -
Arberry (And We are nigher him than you, but you do not see Us)
ShakirAnd We are nearer to it than you, but you do not see--
SarwarWe are closer to him than you, but you cannot see.
KhalifaWe are closer to it than you are, but you do not see.
Hilali/KhanBut We (i.e. Our angels who take the soul) are nearer to him than you, but you see not, (Tafsir At-Tabaree, Vol.27, Page 209)
H/K/SaheehAnd Our angels are nearer to him than you, but you do not see
Malik- and at that time We are nearer to him than you, although you cannot see Us.[85]
QXPAnd We are closer unto him (the dying person) than you are, although you see not -
Maulana AliAnd We are nearer to it than you, but you see not --

Qaribullah We are nearer to him than you, but you do not see

al-Waqi`ah 056:086

56:86 فلولا ان كنتم غير مدينين


TransliterationFalawla in kuntum ghayra madeeneena
LiteralSo if only if you were not indebted.

Yusuf AliThen why do ye not,- If you are exempt from (future) account,-
PickthalWhy then, if ye are not in bondage (unto Us),
Arberry why, if you are not at Our disposal,
ShakirThen why is it not-- if you are not held under authority--
SarwarIf you are true to your claim that there is no Day of Judgment,
KhalifaIf it is true that you do not owe any accounting -
Hilali/KhanThen why do you not, if you are exempt from the reckoning and recompense (punishment, etc.)
H/K/SaheehThen why do you not, if you are not to be recompensed,
MalikThen why do you not - if you claim you are not subject to reckoning[86]
QXPWhy not, then, if you owe nothing to Us,
Maulana AliWhy then, if you are not held under authority,
Free MindsIf it is true that you do not owe any account.
Qaribullah why then, if you are not revived,

George Salewould ye not, if ye are not to be rewarded for your actions hereafter,
JM RodwellWhy do ye not, if ye are to escape the judgment,

Asadwhy, then, if [you think that] you are not truly dependent [on Us],



al-Waqi`ah 056:087

56:87 ترجعونها ان كنتم صادقين


TransliterationTarjiAAoonaha in kuntum sadiqeena
LiteralYou return it (the life), if you were truthful.

Yusuf AliCall back the soul, if ye are true (in the claim of independence)?
PickthalDo ye not force it back, if ye are truthful?
Arberry do you not bring back his soul, if you speak truly?
ShakirThat you send it (not) back-- if you are truthful?
Sarwarwhy can you not bring it (the soul) back (to life)?.
Khalifawhy do you not restore (your soul), if you are truthful?
Hilali/KhanBring back the soul (to its body), if you are truthful?
H/K/SaheehBring it back, if you should be truthful?
Malik- restore to the dying person his soul? Answer this, if what you say be true![87]
QXPMake the departing return, if you are men of truth? (Denying the Fact that Allah alone is the Giver of life and death, and man owes his abilities, limited or abundant, to Him).
Maulana AliDo you not send it back, if you are truthful?
Free MindsThen return it, if you are truthful?
Qaribullah do you not restore his soul, if you are truthful?

George Salecause the same to return into the body, if ye speak truth?
JM RodwellCause that soul to return? Tell me, if ye speak the truth.

Asadcan you not cause that [ebbing life] to return - if what you claim is true?



al-Waqi`ah 056:088

56:88 فاما ان كان من المقربين


TransliterationFaamma in kana mina almuqarrabeena
LiteralSo but if he was from the neared/closer.

Yusuf AliThus, then, if he be of those Nearest to Allah,
PickthalThus if he is of those brought nigh,
Arberry Then, if he be of those brought nigh the Throne,
ShakirThen if he is one of those drawn nigh (to Allah),
Sarwar(If a dying soul) is of those near to God,
KhalifaIf he is one of those close to Me -
Hilali/KhanThen, if he (the dying person) be of the Muqarraboon (those brought near to Allah),
H/K/SaheehAnd if the deceased was of those brought near to Allah,
MalikThen if the dying person is one of those near to Us,[88]
QXPNow, if he is of those drawn near (for having walked aright),
Maulana AliThen if he is one of those drawn nigh (to Allah),
Free MindsSo, if he is one of those who are made near.
Qaribullah If he is among the near

George SaleAnd whether he be of those who shall approach near unto God,
JM RodwellBut as to him who shall enjoy near access to God,

Asad[ALL OF YOU are destined to die.] Now if one happens to be of those who are drawn close unto God, [I.e., the "foremost" spoken of in verses 10-11 of this surah.]



al-Waqi`ah 056:089

56:89 فروح وريحان وجنة نعيم


TransliterationFarawhun warayhanun wajannatu naAAeemin
LiteralSo a happiness/rest/mercy, and basil/fragrant plants, and treed gardens/paradises, and comfort and ease (is for him).

Yusuf Ali(There is for him) Rest and Satisfaction, and a Garden of Delights.
PickthalThen breath of life, and plenty, and a Garden of delight.
Arberry there shall be repose and ease, and a Garden of Delight;
ShakirThen happiness and bounty and a garden of bliss.
Sarwarit will have rest, happiness, and a beautiful Paradise.
Khalifathen joy, flowers, and gardens of bliss.
Hilali/Khan(There is for him) rest and provision, and a Garden of delights (Paradise).
H/K/SaheehThen [for him is] rest and bounty and a garden of pleasure.
Malikfor him there is comfort and bounty, and a garden of bliss.[89]
QXP(For him) Jubilation, and inner fulfillment, and a Garden of Bliss!
Maulana AliThen happiness and bounty and a Garden of bliss.
Free MindsThen joy, and rose buds, and paradises of bliss.
Qaribullah there shall be calmness and ease, a Garden of Delight.

George Salehis reward shall be rest, and mercy, and a garden of delights:
JM RodwellHis shall be repose, and pleasure, and a garden of delights.

Asadhappiness [awaits him in the life to come], and inner fulfillment, and a garden of bliss.



al-Waqi`ah 056:090

56:90 واما ان كان من اصحاب اليمين


TransliterationWaamma in kana min as-habi alyameeni
LiteralBut/as for if (he) was from the right (hand's) owners/company/friends.

Yusuf AliAnd if he be of the Companions of the Right Hand,
PickthalAnd if he is of those on the right hand,
Arberry and if he be a Companion of the Right:
ShakirAnd if he is one of those on the right hand,
SarwarIf it is of the people of the right hand,
KhalifaAnd if he is one of the right -
Hilali/KhanAnd if he (the dying person) be of those on the Right Hand,
H/K/SaheehAnd if he was of the companions of the right,
MalikAnd if he be one of the right hand,[90]
QXPAnd thus he is of the blessed ones,
Maulana AliAnd if he is one of those on the right hand,
Free MindsAnd if he is one of the people of the right.
Qaribullah If he is a Companion of the Right

George SaleOr whether he be of the companions of the right hand,
JM RodwellYea, for him who shall be of the people of the right hand,

AsadAnd if one happens to be of those who have attained to righteousness, [See note on verse 27 above.]



al-Waqi`ah 056:091

56:91 فسلام لك من اصحاب اليمين


TransliterationFasalamun laka min as-habi alyameeni
LiteralSo greeting/peace (is) for you from the right (hands') owners/company/friends.

Yusuf Ali(For him is the salutation), "Peace be unto thee", from the Companions of the Right Hand.
PickthalThen (the greeting) "Peace be unto thee" from those on the right hand.
Arberry 'Peace be upon thee, Companion of the Right!'
ShakirThen peace to you from those on the right hand.
Sarwarit will be with the people of the right hand, living in peace and security.
Khalifapeace is the lot of those on the right.
Hilali/KhanThen there is safety and peace (from the Punishment of Allah) for (you as you are from) those on the Right Hand.
H/K/SaheehThen [the angels will say], "Peace for you; [you are] from the companions of the right."
Malikhe is greeted with salutation: "Peace be upon you," from those of the right hand.[91]
QXPSo, "Salutation of Peace be upon you!" - from the blessed ones. (56:38).
Maulana AliThen peace to thee from those on the right hand.
Free MindsThen: "Peace" from the people of the right.
Qaribullah (he will be greeted with): 'Peace be upon you, Companion of the Right! '

George Salehe shall be saluted with the salutation, peace be unto thee! By the companions of the right hand his brethren:
JM RodwellShall be the greeting from the people of the right hand-"Peace be to thee."

Asad[he, too, will be welcomed into paradise with the words,] "Peace be unto thee [that art] of those who have attained to righteousness!"



al-Waqi`ah 056:092

56:92 واما ان كان من المكذبين الضالين


TransliterationWaamma in kana mina almukaththibeena alddalleena
LiteralAnd but/as for if (he) was from the liars/deniers/falsifiers, the misguided.

Yusuf AliAnd if he be of those who treat (Truth) as Falsehood, who go wrong,
PickthalBut if he is of the rejecters, the erring,
Arberry But if he be of them that cried lies, and went astray,
ShakirAnd if he is one of the rejecters, the erring ones,
SarwarIf it is of those who have rejected the Truth and have gone astray,
KhalifaBut if he is one of the disbelievers, the strayers -
Hilali/KhanBut if he (the dying person) be of the denying (of the Resurrection), the erring (away from the Right Path of Islamic Monotheism),
H/K/SaheehBut if he was of the deniers [who were] astray,
MalikAnd if he is one of the mistaken rejecters,[92]
QXPBut if he is of the rejecters, the straying,
Maulana AliAnd if he is one of the rejectors, the erring ones,
Free MindsBut if he is one of the deniers, the strayers.
Qaribullah But, if he is of those who belied, and went astray,

George SaleOr whether he be of those who have rejected the true faith, and gone astray,
JM RodwellBut for him who shall be of those who treat the prophets as deceivers, And of the erring,

AsadBut if one happens to be of those who are wont to call the truth a lie, and [thus] go astray,



al-Waqi`ah 056:093

56:93 فنزل من حميم


TransliterationFanuzulun min hameemin
LiteralSo a place of descent from hot water/red hot coal .

Yusuf AliFor him is Entertainment with Boiling Water.
PickthalThen the welcome will be boiling water
Arberry there shall be a hospitality of boiling water
ShakirHe shall have an entertainment of boiling water,
Sarwarits dwelling will be boiling water
Khalifathen an abode of inferno -
Hilali/KhanThen for him is entertainment with boiling water.
H/K/SaheehThen [for him is] accommodation of scalding water
Malikhe is welcomed with scalding water,[93]
QXPThen the welcome will be smoldering anguish.
Maulana AliHe has an entertainment of boiling water,
Free MindsThen an abode of boiling water.
Qaribullah there shall be a hospitality of boiling water,

George Salehis entertainment shall consist of boiling water,
JM RodwellHis entertainment shall be of scalding water,

Asada welcome of burning despair [awaits him in the life to come,]



al-Waqi`ah 056:094

56:94 وتصلية جحيم


TransliterationWatasliyatu jaheemin
LiteralAnd Hell's roasting/suffering .

Yusuf AliAnd burning in Hell-Fire.
PickthalAnd roasting at hell-fire.
Arberry and the roasting in Hell.
ShakirAnd burning in hell.
Sarwarand the heat of hell fire.
Khalifaand burning in Hell.
Hilali/KhanAnd burning in Hell-fire.
H/K/SaheehAnd burning in Hellfire
Malikand burning in hellfire.[94]
QXPAnd scorching heat before the Insurmountable Barrier.
Maulana AliAnd burning in hell.
Free MindsAnd a burning in Hell.
Qaribullah and a roasting in Hell.

George Saleand the burning of hell fire.
JM RodwellAnd the broiling of hell-fire.

Asadand the heat of a blazing fire!



al-Waqi`ah 056:095

56:95 ان هذا لهو حق اليقين


TransliterationInna hatha lahuwa haqqu alyaqeeni
LiteralThat truly that it is (E) true , the assurance/certainty.

Yusuf AliVerily, this is the Very Truth and Certainly.
PickthalLo! this is certain truth.
Arberry Surely this is the truth of certainty.
ShakirMost surely this is a certain truth.
SarwarThis is the absolute Truth and certainty.
KhalifaThis is the absolute truth.
Hilali/KhanVerily, this! This is an absolute Truth with certainty.
H/K/SaheehIndeed, this is the true certainty,
MalikSurely this is an absolute truth.[95]
QXPVerily, this is the most Certain Truth.
Maulana AliSurely this is a certain truth.
Free MindsThis is the absolute truth.
Qaribullah Indeed, this is the certain truth.

AsadVerily, this is indeed the truth of truths! [Lit., "a truth of certainty", i.e., a truth most certain. The pronoun "this" in the above sentence relates not merely to the announcement of resurrection and life after death, but also - and primarily - to the stress on man's utter dependence on God.]



al-Waqi`ah 056:096

56:96 فسبح باسم ربك العظيم


TransliterationFasabbih biismi rabbika alAAatheemi
LiteralSo praise/glorify with your Lord's name, the great.402

Yusuf AliSo celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme.
PickthalTherefor (O Muhammad) praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous.
Arberry Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty.
ShakirTherefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great.
SarwarSo glorify the name of your Lord, the Great One.
KhalifaYou shall glorify the name of your Lord, the Great.
Hilali/KhanSo glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.
H/K/SaheehSo exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. Bismillahir Raúmanir-Raúeem
MalikTherefore, glorify the name of your Lord, Who is the Greatest.[96]
QXPWork hard, then, to establish the Glory of your Lord's Supreme Name.
Maulana AliSo glorify the name of thy Lord, the Incomparably Great.
Free MindsYou shall glorify the name of your Lord, the Great.
Qaribullah So exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great.

George SaleWherefore praise the name of thy Lord, the great God.
JM RodwellPraise therefore the name of thy Lord, the Great.

AsadExtol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name!
