15:1 سورة الحجر بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ــــ الر تلك ايات الكتاب وقران مبين


TransliterationAlif-lam-ra tilka ayatu alkitabi waqur-anin mubeenin
LiteralA L R , those are The Book's evidences/verses , and (an) evident/clear Koran .

Yusuf AliA. L. R. These are the Ayats of Revelation,- of a Qur'an that makes things clear.
PickthalAlif. Lam. Ra. These are verses of the Scripture and a plain Reading.
Arberry Alif Lam Ra. Those are the signs of the Book and of a manifest Koran.
ShakirAlif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the Book and (of) a Quran that makes (things) clear.
SarwarAlif. Lam. Ra. These are the verses of the Book and the glorious Quran.
KhalifaA.L.R. These (letters) are proofs of this scripture; a profound Quran.
Hilali/KhanAlif-Lam-Ra. (These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings).These are the Verses of the Book, and a plain Quran.
H/K/SaheehAlif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qurâ an.
MalikAlif L'am Ra. These are the verses of the Divine Book, the Glorious Qur’an which makes the things clear.[1]
QXPA.L.R. Allah, Aleem the Knower, Raziq the Provider. These are Messages of Revelation, of a discourse clear in itself and clearly showing the Truth. This is Qur'an, a plain reading and a Revelation that explains itself.
Maulana AliI, Allah, am the Seer. These are the verses of the Book and (of) a Qur’an that makes manifest.

al-Hijr 015:002

15:2 ربما يود الذين كفروا لو كانوا مسلمين


TransliterationRubama yawaddu allatheena kafaroo law kanoo muslimeena
LiteralMaybe those who disbelieved wish/love if they were Moslems/submitters/surrenderers.

Yusuf AliAgain and again will those who disbelieve, wish that they had bowed (to Allah's will) in Islam.
PickthalIt may be that those who disbelieve wish ardently that they were Muslims.
Arberry Perchance the unbelievers will wish that they had surrendered:
ShakirOften will those who disbelieve wish that they had been Muslims.
SarwarHow strongly the unbelievers will wish that they had been Muslims.
KhalifaCertainly, those who disbelieved will wish they were submitters.
Hilali/KhanPerhaps (often) will those who disbelieve wish that they were Muslims (those who have submitted themselves to Allahs Will in Islam Islamic Monotheism, this will be on the Day of Resurrection when they will see the disbelievers going to Hell and the Muslims going to Paradise).
H/K/SaheehPerhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims.
MalikThe Day will come when the unbelievers will wish that they were Muslims.[2]
QXPThe time is coming when the rejecters of the Truth will ardently wish that they were Muslims.
Maulana AliOften will those who disbelieve wish that they were Muslims.
Free MindsPerhaps those who have rejected will wish they were of those who surrendered!
Qaribullah It could be that those who disbelieve will wish that they were Muslims.

George SaleThe time may come when the unbelievers shall wish that they had been Moslems.
JM RodwellMany a time will the infidels wish that they had been Muslims.

AsadAnd it will come to pass that those who are [now] bent on denying this truth will wish that they had surrendered themselves to God [in their life time].'



al-Hijr 015:003

15:3 ذرهم ياكلوا ويتمتعوا ويلههم الامل فسوف يعلمون


TransliterationTharhum ya/kuloo wayatamattaAAoo wayulhihimu al-amalu fasawfa yaAAlamoona
LiteralLeave them eat and they live long/enjoy, and the hope distracts/preoccupies them , so they will/shall know.

Yusuf AliLeave them alone, to enjoy (the good things of this life) and to please themselves: let (false) hope amuse them: soon will knowledge (undeceive them).
PickthalLet them eat and enjoy life, and let (false) hope beguile them. They will come to know!
Arberry leave them to eat, and to take their joy, and to be bemused by hope; certainly they will soon know!
ShakirLeave them that they may eat and enjoy themselves and (that) hope may beguile them, for they will soon know.
Sarwar(Muhammad), leave them alone to eat and enjoy themselves and let their desires deceive them; they will soon know (the Truth).
KhalifaLet them eat, enjoy, and remain blinded by wishful thinking; they will find out.
Hilali/KhanLeave them to eat and enjoy, and let them be preoccupied with (false) hope. They will come to know!
H/K/SaheehLet them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know.
MalikLeave them alone to eat and enjoy themselves and be deluded by false hopes, for soon they will find out the Truth.[3]
QXPLet them eat, drink, and enjoy life while hanging on to false hopes (47:12). They will come to know. (If they do not come to the Truth, the Truth will come to them, and they will see it (102:7)).
Maulana AliLeave them to eat and enjoy themselves, and let (false) hope beguile them, for they will soon know.
Free MindsLeave them to eat and enjoy, and let them be preoccupied with hope. They will come to know.
Qaribullah Let them eat and enjoy; and let their hopes deceive them, soon they shall know.

George SaleSuffer them to eat, and to enjoy themselves in this world; and let hope entertain them: But they shall hereafter know their folly.
JM RodwellLet them feast and enjoy themselves, and let hope beguile them: but they shall know the truth at last.

AsadLeave them alone; let them eat and enjoy themselves the while the hope [of vain delights] beguiles them: for in time they will come to know [the truth].



al-Hijr 015:004

15:4 ومااهلكنا من قرية الا ولها كتاب معلوم


TransliterationWama ahlakna min qaryatin illa walaha kitabun maAAloomun
LiteralAnd We did not destroy from a village/urban city , except and for it (is) a known Book .

Yusuf AliNever did We destroy a population that had not a term decreed and assigned beforehand.
PickthalAnd We destroyed no township but there was a known decree for it.
Arberry Never a city have We destroyed, but it had a known decree,
ShakirAnd never did We destroy a town but it had a term made known.
SarwarWe never destroyed any town without pre-ordaining the fate of its people.
KhalifaWe never annihilated any community, except in accordance with a specific, predetermined time.
Hilali/KhanAnd never did We destroy a township but there was a known decree for it.
H/K/SaheehAnd We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree.
MalikNever did We destroy a town whose term of life was not ordained beforehand.[4]
QXPAnd Our Law of Requital annihilated no community or township before the period of respite was over (13:38).
Maulana AliAnd never did We destroy a town but it had a decree made known.
Free MindsWe have not destroyed any town except that it had an appointed time.
Qaribullah We never destroyed a village whose term had not already been decreed.

George SaleWe have not destroyed any city, but a fixed term of repentance was appointed them.
JM RodwellWe never destroyed a city whose term was not perfixed:

AsadAnd never have We destroyed any community [for its wrongdoing] unless a divine writ had [previously] been made known to it;`



al-Hijr 015:005

15:5 ماتسبق من امة اجلها ومايستأخرون


TransliterationMa tasbiqu min ommatin ajalaha wama yasta/khiroona
LiteralNone from a nation precedes its term/time, and they do not delay (it).

Yusuf AliNeither can a people anticipate its term, nor delay it.
PickthalNo nation can outstrip its term nor can they lag behind.
Arberry and no nation outstrips its term, nor do they put it back.
ShakirNo people can hasten on their doom nor can they postpone (it).
SarwarEvery nation can only live for the time appointed for it.
KhalifaThe end of any community can never be advanced, nor delayed.
Hilali/KhanNo nation can anticipate its term, nor delay it.
H/K/SaheehNo nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter.
MalikNo people can forestall their doom, nor can they postpone it.[5]
QXPThe Law of Respite has no exceptions. No nation can hasten or delay the consequence.
Maulana AliNo people can hasten on their doom, nor can they postpone (it).
Free MindsNo nation can quicken its fate, nor can they delay.
Qaribullah No nation can outstrip its term, nor do they put it back.

George SaleNo nation shall be punished before their time shall be come; neither shall they be respited after.
JM RodwellNo people can forestall or retard its destiny.

Asad[but remember that] no community can ever forestall [the end of] its term - and neither can they delay [it].



al-Hijr 015:006

15:6 وقالوا ياايها الذي نزل عليه الذكر انك لمجنون


TransliterationWaqaloo ya ayyuha allathee nuzzila AAalayhi alththikru innaka lamajnoonun
LiteralAnd they said: "You, you who the reminder/remembrance was descended on him, that you are mad/insane (E)."

Yusuf AliThey say: "O thou to whom the Message is being revealed! truly thou art mad (or possessed)!
PickthalAnd they say: O thou unto whom the Reminder is revealed, lo! thou art indeed a madman!
Arberry They say: 'Thou, upon whom the Remembrance is sent down, thou art assuredly possessed!
ShakirAnd they say: O you to whom the Reminder has been revealed! you are most surely insane:
Sarwar(The unbelievers have said), "You to whom the Quran has been revealed are insane.
KhalifaThey said, "O you who received this reminder, you are crazy.
Hilali/KhanAnd they say: "O you (Muhammad SAW ) to whom the Dhikr (the Quran) has been sent down! Verily, you are a mad man.
H/K/SaheehAnd they say," O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad.
MalikThey say: "O you to whom the reminder (The Qur'an) is being revealed! You are surely insane.[6]
QXPAnd yet, they who deny the Truth, say, "O You, unto whom this Reminder has been revealed, verily you are mad!"
Maulana AliAnd they say: O thou to whom the Reminder is revealed, thou art indeed mad.
Free MindsAnd they said: "O you upon whom the Reminder has been sent down, you are crazy."
Qaribullah They say: 'You to whom the Remembrance is sent down, you are indeed mad.

George SaleThe Meccans say, O thou to whom the admonition hath been sent down, thou art certainly possessed with a devil:
JM RodwellThey say: "O thou to whom the warning hath been sent down, thou art surely possessed by a djinn:

AsadAnd yet, they [who deny the truth] say: "O thou unto whom this reminder has [allegedly] been bestowed from on high: verily, thou art mad!



al-Hijr 015:007

15:7 لو ماتاتينا بالملائكة ان كنت من الصادقين


TransliterationLaw ma ta/teena bialmala-ikati in kunta mina alssadiqeena
LiteralIf you (could) come to us with the angels , if you were from truthful! (expression of wonderment).

Yusuf Ali"Why bringest thou not angels to us if it be that thou hast the Truth?"
PickthalWhy bringest thou not angels unto us, if thou art of the truthful?
Arberry Why dost thou not bring the angels unto us, if thou speakest truly?'
ShakirWhy do you not bring to us the angels if you are of the truthful ones?
SarwarWhy do you not bring down the angels if what you say is true".
Khalifa"Why do you not bring down the angels, if you are truthful?"
Hilali/Khan"Why do you not bring angels to us if you are of the truthful ones?"
H/K/SaheehWhy do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?
MalikWhy don’t you bring us the angels, if you are of the truthful ones?"[7]
QXP"Why don't you bring angels to us if you are a man of truth?"
Maulana AliWhy bringest thou not the angels to us, if thou art of the truthful?
Free Minds"Why not bring us the Angels if you are of the truthful ones?"
Qaribullah Why do you not bring down the angels, if what you say is true. '

George SaleWouldest thou not have come unto us with an attendance of angels, if thou hadst spoken truth?
JM RodwellWouldst thou not have come to us with the angels, if thou wert of those who assert the truth?"

AsadWhy dost thou not bring before us angels, if thou art a man of truth?"



al-Hijr 015:008

15:8 ماننزل الملائكة الا بالحق وماكانوا اذا منظرين


TransliterationMa nunazzilu almala-ikata illa bialhaqqi wama kanoo ithan munthareena
LiteralWe do not descend the angels except with the truth , and they (the disbelievers) were not then delayed/waited .

Yusuf AliWe send not the angels down except for just cause: if they came (to the ungodly), behold! no respite would they have!
PickthalWe send not down the angels save with the Fact, and in that case (the disbelievers) would not be tolerated.
Arberry We send not down the angels, save with truth;
ShakirWe do not send the angels but with truth, and then they would not be respited.
SarwarWe do not send down angels except for a genuine purpose, at which time none will be given any further respite.
KhalifaWe do not send down the angels except for specific functions. Otherwise, no one will be respited.
Hilali/KhanWe send not the angels down except with the truth (i.e. for torment, etc.), and in that case, they (the disbelievers) would have no respite!
H/K/SaheehWe do not send down the angels except with truth; and the disbelievers would not then be reprieved.
MalikO Muhammad, tell them: "We do not send down the angels except for just cause (to execute Our scourge), and when they come, people are not given respite.[8]
QXPWe do not send down the angels except when the period of respite is over. And in that case the rejecters get no further reprieve.
Maulana AliWe send not angels but with truth, and then they would not be respited.
Free MindsWe do not send down the Angels except with truth, and then they would have no more delay.
Qaribullah We do not send angels except with the truth. Then they shall have no respite.

George SaleAnswer, we send not down the angels, unless on a just occasion; nor should they be then respited any longer.
JM RodwellWe will not send down the angels without due cause. The Infidels would not in that case have been respited.

Asad[Yet] We never send down angels otherwise than in accordance with the [demands of] truth;' and [were the angels to appear now,] lo! they [who reject this divine writ] would have no further respite!'



al-Hijr 015:009

15:9 انا نحن نزلنا الذكر وانا له لحافظون


TransliterationInna nahnu nazzalna alththikra wa-inna lahu lahafithoona
LiteralThat We, We descended the reminder/remembrance, and that We (are) for it, protectors/guards (E) .

Yusuf AliWe have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption).
PickthalLo! We, even We, reveal the Reminder, and lo! We verily are its Guardian.
Arberry then they would not be respited. It is We who have sent down the Remembrance, and We watch over it.
ShakirSurely We have revealed the Reminder and We will most surely be its guardian.
SarwarWe Ourselves have revealed the Quran and We are its Protectors.
KhalifaAbsolutely, we have revealed the reminder, and, absolutely, we will preserve it.
Hilali/KhanVerily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Quran) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption).
H/K/SaheehIndeed, it is We who sent down the Qurâ an and indeed, We will be its guardian.
MalikSurely We have revealed this reminder (The Qur'an); and We will surely preserve it Ourself.[9]
QXPBehold, it is We Ourselves Who have sent down this Reminder, and behold, it is We Who shall truly guard it. (6:116).
Maulana AliSurely We have revealed the Reminder, and surely We are its Guardian.
Free MindsIndeed it is We who have sent down the Reminder, and indeed it is We who will preserve it.
Qaribullah It is We who sent down the Koran, and We watch over it.

George SaleWe have surely sent down the Koran; and We will certainly preserve the same from corruption.
JM RodwellVerily, We have sent down the warning, and verily, We will be its guardian;

AsadBehold, it is We Ourselves who have bestowed from on high, step by step, this reminder? and, behold, it is We who shall truly guard it [from all corruption]. '°



al-Hijr 015:010

15:10 ولقد ارسلنا من قبلك في شيع الاولين


TransliterationWalaqad arsalna min qablika fee shiyaAAi al-awwaleena
LiteralAnd We had descended from before you in the first's/beginner's groups/parties .

Yusuf AliWe did send messengers before thee amongst the religious sects of old:
PickthalWe verily sent (messengers) before thee among the factions of the men of old.
Arberry Indeed, We sent Messengers before thee, among the factions of the ancients,
ShakirAnd certainly We sent (messengers) before you among the nations of yore.
SarwarWe sent Messengers to the ancient people who lived before you.
KhalifaWe have sent (messengers) before you to the communities in the past.
Hilali/KhanIndeed, We sent Messengers before you (O Muhammad SAW) amongst the sects (communities) of old.
H/K/SaheehAnd We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muúammad], among the sects of the former peoples.
MalikCertainly We sent Messengers before you among the early nations;[10]
QXPAnd indeed (O Prophet) even before your time We sent Messengers to the communities.
Maulana AliAnd certainly We sent (messengers) before thee among the sects of yore.
Free MindsAnd We have sent before you to the groups of old.
Qaribullah We have sent forth before you Messengers among the factions of the ancients.

George SaleWe have heretofore sent Apostles before thee, among the ancient sects:
JM RodwellAnd already have We sent Apostles, before thee, among the sects of the ancients;

AsadAND, INDEED, [O Prophet,] even before thy time did We send [Our apostles] unto communities" of old -



al-Hijr 015:011

15:11 وماياتيهم من رسول الا كانوا به يستهزؤون


TransliterationWama ya/teehim min rasoolin illa kanoo bihi yastahzi-oona
LiteralAnd none from a messenger comes to them , except they were with him mocking/making fun.

Yusuf AliBut never came a messenger to them but they mocked him.
PickthalAnd never came there unto them a messenger but they did mock him.
Arberry and not a single Messenger came to them, but they mocked at him;
ShakirAnd there never came a messenger to them but they mocked him.
SarwarNo Messenger went to them whom they did not mock.
KhalifaEvery time a messenger went to them, they ridiculed him.
Hilali/KhanAnd never came a Messenger to them but they did mock him.
H/K/SaheehAnd no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him.
Malikbut whenever a Messenger came to them, they mocked him.[11]
QXPAnd never came there a Messenger unto them but they did mock him.
Maulana AliAnd there never came a messenger to them but they mocked him.
Free MindsAnd any messenger that came to them, they would mock him.
Qaribullah But no Messenger came to them except he was mocked.

George SaleAnd there came no Apostle unto them, but they laughed him to scorn.
JM RodwellBut never came Apostles to them whom they did not deride.

Asadand never yet came an apostle to them without their deriding him.



al-Hijr 015:012

15:12 كذلك نسلكه في قلوب المجرمين


TransliterationKathalika naslukuhu fee quloobi almujrimeena
LiteralAs/like that We enter/insert it in the criminals'/sinners' hearts/minds .

Yusuf AliEven so do we let it creep into the hearts of the sinners -
PickthalThus do We make it traverse the hearts of the guilty:
Arberry even so We cause it to enter into the hearts of the sinners --
ShakirThus do We make it to enter into the hearts of the guilty;
SarwarThis is how We cause the hearts of the guilty ones to behave.
KhalifaWe thus control the minds of the guilty.
Hilali/KhanThus do We let it (polytheism and disbelief) enter into the hearts of the Mujrimoon (criminals, polytheists, pagans, etc. (because of their mockery at the Messengers)).
H/K/SaheehThus do We insert denial into the hearts of the criminals.
MalikThus do We let doubt creep into the hearts of the criminals;[12]
QXPOur Law turns the psyche of the guilty such that they ridicule reform since they are used to thriving on the fruit of others' toil.
Maulana AliThus do We make it enter the hearts of the guilty --
Free MindsIt is such that We let it seep into the hearts of the criminals.
Qaribullah So We make it enter the hearts of the sinners.

George SaleIn the same manner will we put it into the hearts of the wicked Meccans to scoff at their prophet:
JM RodwellIn like manner will We put it into the hearts of the sinners of Mecca to do the same:

AsadEven so do We [now] cause this [scorn of Our message] to pervade the hearts of those who are lost in sin,



al-Hijr 015:013

15:13 لايؤمنون به وقد خلت سنة الاولين


TransliterationLa yu/minoona bihi waqad khalat sunnatu al-awwaleena
LiteralThey do not believe with it, and (the) manner/nature (of) the firsts/beginners had past/expired .

Yusuf AliThat they should not believe in the (Message); but the ways of the ancients have passed away.
PickthalThey believe not therein, though the example of the men of old hath gone before.
Arberry they believe not in it, though the wont of the ancients is already gone.
ShakirThey do not believe in it, and indeed the example of the former people has already passed.
SarwarThey do not believe in the Truth and they exactly follow the tradition of the ancient (unbelievers)
KhalifaConsequently, they cannot believe in him. This has been the system since the past generations.
Hilali/KhanThey would not believe in it (the Quran), and already the example of (Allahs punishment of) the ancients (who disbelieved) has gone forth.
H/K/SaheehThey will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples.
Malikthat they do not believe in it (The Qur'an), despite the examples of the people who passed before them.[13]
QXPThey accept not the Message. Such has been the way of those who went before them.
Maulana AliThey believe not in it; and the example of the ancients has gone before.
Free MindsThey do not believe in it, while the examples of the early generations has been brought to them.
Qaribullah They do not believe in it even though the practice of the ancients has already gone.

George SaleThey shall not believe on him; and the sentence of the nations of old hath been executed heretofore.
JM RodwellThey will not believe on him though the example of those of old hath gone before.

Asadwho do not believe in it,". although the way which those [evildoers] of olden times had to go has long been within their ken."



al-Hijr 015:014

15:14 ولو فتحنا عليهم بابا من السماء فظلوا فيه يعرجون


TransliterationWalaw fatahna AAalayhim baban mina alssama-i fathalloo feehi yaAArujoona
LiteralAnd if We opened on them a door/entrance from the sky/space, so they continued/remained in it ascending/zigzagging.

Yusuf AliEven if We opened out to them a gate from heaven, and they were to continue (all day) ascending therein,
PickthalAnd even if We opened unto them a gate of heaven and they kept mounting through it,
Arberry Though We opened to them a gate in heaven, and still they mounted through it,
ShakirAnd even if We open to them a gateway of heaven, so that they ascend into it all the while,
SarwarHad We opened a door for them in the sky through which they could easily pass,
KhalifaEven if we opened for them a gate into the sky, through which they climb;
Hilali/KhanAnd even if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they were to continue ascending thereto,
H/K/SaheehAnd [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend,
MalikEven if we had opened a gate in Heaven and they ascend through it and keep on ascending,[14]
QXPAnd even if We opened to them a Gate into the Heaven, and they kept ascending through it,
Maulana AliAnd even if We open to them a gate of heaven, and they keep on ascending into it,
Free MindsAnd if We opened for them a gate in the heaven and they were to continue ascending to it,
Qaribullah If We opened a gate in the heaven and they kept ascending through it,

George SaleIf We should open a gate in the heaven above them, and they should ascend thereto all the day long,
JM RodwellEven were We to open above them a gate in Heaven, yet all the while they were mounting up to it,

AsadYet even had We opened to them a gateway to heaven and they had ascended, on and on, up to it,



al-Hijr 015:015

15:15 لقالوا انما سكرت ابصارنا بل نحن قوم مسحورون


TransliterationLaqaloo innama sukkirat absaruna bal nahnu qawmun mashooroona
LiteralThey would have said: "But our eye/sights/understanding got closed and confused, but we are a bewitched/enchanted nation."

Yusuf AliThey would only say: "Our eyes have been intoxicated: Nay, we have been bewitched by sorcery."
PickthalThey would say: Our sight is wrong - nay, but we are folk bewitched.
Arberry yet would they say, 'Our eyes have been dazzled; nay, we are a people bewitched!'
ShakirThey would certainly say: Only our eyes have been covered over, rather we are an enchanted people.
Sarwarthey would have said, "Our eyes are bewildered and we have been affected by magic."
Khalifathey will say, "Our eyes have been deceived. We have been bewitched."
Hilali/KhanThey would surely say: "Our eyes have been (as if) dazzled. Nay, we are a people bewitched."
H/K/SaheehThey would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic."
Malikstill they would have said, 'Our eyes have been dazzled; rather we have been bewitched.'"[15]
QXPThey would say, "Our eyes are intoxicated. Nay, we are a folk bewitched."
Maulana AliThey would say: Only our eyes have been covered over, rather we are an enchanted people.
Free MindsThey would have said: "Our sight has been fogged. No, we are a people who are being bewitched!"
Qaribullah still they would say: 'Our eyes were dazzled; truly, we must have been a bewitched people. '

George Salethey would surely say, our eyes are only dazzled; or rather we are a people deluded by inchantments.

al-Hijr 015:016

15:16 ولقد جعلنا في السماء بروجا وزيناها للناظرين


TransliterationWalaqad jaAAalna fee alssama-i buroojan wazayyannaha lilnnathireena
LiteralAnd We had made/created in the sky/space constellations, and We decorated/beautified it to the lookers/seers .

Yusuf AliIt is We Who have set out the zodiacal signs in the heavens, and made them fair-seeming to (all) beholders;
PickthalAnd verily in the heaven we have set mansions of the stars, and We have beautified it for beholders.
Arberry We have set in heaven constellations and decked them out fair to the beholders,
ShakirAnd certainly We have made strongholds in the heaven and We have made it fair seeming to the beholders.
SarwarWe have made constellations in the sky and decorated them for the onlookers.
KhalifaWe placed galaxies in the sky, and adorned it for the beholders.
Hilali/KhanAnd indeed, We have put the big stars in the heaven and We beautified it for the beholders.
H/K/SaheehAnd We have placed within the heaven great stars and have beautified it for the observers.
MalikIt is We who have decked the heavens with constellations and made them fair- seeming for the beholders;[16]
QXPWe have set constellations in the Sky and We have beautified it for the beholders.
Maulana AliAnd certainly We have made strongholds in the heaven, and We have made it fair-seeming to the beholders,

Qaribullah We have set constellations in the heavens and made them pleasing to the beholders,

al-Hijr 015:017

15:17 وحفظناها من كل شيطان رجيم


TransliterationWahafithnaha min kulli shaytanin rajeemin
LiteralAnd We protected/guarded it from every cursed/expelled devil.

Yusuf AliAnd (moreover) We have guarded them from every cursed devil:

Yusuf AliBut any that gains a hearing by stealth, is pursued by a flaming fire, bright (to see).
PickthalSave him who stealeth the hearing, and them doth a clear flame pursue.
Arberry excepting such as listens by stealth -- and he is pursued by a manifest flame.
ShakirBut he who steals a hearing, so there follows him a visible flame.
Sarwarexcept for those who stealthily try to listen to the heavens, but who are chased away by a bright flame.
KhalifaIf any of them sneaks around to listen, a mighty projectile will chase him back.
Hilali/KhanExcept him (devil) that gains hearing by stealing, he is pursued by a clear flaming fire.
H/K/SaheehExcept one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame.
MalikAny Satan that steals a hearing, there follows him a fiery comet.[18]
QXP(Allah is everywhere, not just in the skies. The Qur'an dispels all superstitions including the clairvoyants and fortunetellers spying onto His Court). The Shining Flame of Knowledge has now come to you to dispel the deceptive claims of every deceiver. (26:210-212), (37:8-9), (52:38), (67:5), (72:8-9).
Maulana AliBut he who steals a hearing; so there follows him a visible flame.

Qaribullah Except for he who steals the listening and is then pursued by a visible flame.

al-Hijr 015:019

15:19 والارض مددناها والقينا فيها رواسي وانبتنا فيها من كل شئ موزون


TransliterationWaal-arda madadnaha waalqayna feeha rawasiya waanbatna feeha min kulli shay-in mawzoonin
LiteralAnd the earth/Planet Earth, We extended/spread it, and We threw in it anchors/mountains , and We sprouted/grew in it from every thing weighed/measured/balanced.

Yusuf AliAnd the earth We have spread out (like a carpet); set thereon mountains firm and immovable; and produced therein all kinds of things in due balance.
PickthalAnd the earth have We spread out, and placed therein firm hills, and caused each seemly thing to grow therein.
Arberry And the earth -- We stretched it forth, and cast on it firm mountains, and We caused to grow therein of every thing justly weighed,
ShakirAnd the earth-- We have spread it forth and made in it firm mountains and caused to grow in it of every suitable thing.
SarwarWe have spread out the earth, fixed mountains thereupon and caused everything to grow to its proper weight
KhalifaAs for the earth, we constructed it, and placed on it stabilizers (mountains), and we grew on it a perfect balance of everything.
Hilali/KhanAnd the earth We spread out, and placed therein firm mountains, and caused to grow therein all kinds of things in due proportion.
H/K/SaheehAnd the earth We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing.
MalikWe have spread out the earth and set mountains upon it; and caused to grow every suitable thing therein,[19]
QXPAnd the earth, We have spread it out wide and compressed its Globe (39:5) and placed firm in it mountain ranges. And caused each seemly thing to grow in due proportion therein. (15:19-20), (31:10), (41:10), (79:28-30), (88:18-20).
Maulana AliAnd the earth -- We have spread it out and made in it firm mountains and caused to grow in it of every suitable thing.
Free MindsAnd the land We have stretched, and placed stabilizers in it, and We have planted in it everything in balance.
Qaribullah We have spread out the earth and set upon it firm mountains. Everything We have caused to grow therein is justly weighed;

George SaleWe have also spread forth the earth, and thrown thereon stable mountains; and we have caused every kind of vegetable to spring forth in the same, according to a determinate weight:
JM RodwellAnd the Earth have We spread forth, and thrown thereon the mountains, and caused everything to spring forth in it in balanced measure:

AsadAnd the earth -We have spread it out wide, and placed on it mountains firm, and caused [life] of every kind to grow on it in a balanced manner,



al-Hijr 015:020

15:20 وجعلنا لكم فيها معايش ومن لستم له برازقين


TransliterationWajaAAalna lakum feeha maAAayisha waman lastum lahu biraziqeena
LiteralAnd We made/created for you in it livelihoods/sustenances, and whom you are not to him with providing for.

Yusuf AliAnd We have provided therein means of subsistence,- for you and for those for whose sustenance ye are not responsible.
PickthalAnd we have given unto you livelihoods therein, and unto those for whom ye provide not.
Arberry and there appointed for you livelihood, and for those you provide not for.
ShakirAnd We have made in it means of subsistence for you and for him for whom you are not the suppliers.
Sarwarto provide you and those for whose sustenance you are not responsible, with the necessities of life.
KhalifaWe made it habitable for you, and for creatures you do not provide for.
Hilali/KhanAnd We have provided therein means of living, for you and for those whom you provide not (moving (living) creatures, cattle, beasts, and other animals).
H/K/SaheehAnd We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers.
Malikand We provided therein means of sustenance for you and many other creatures to whom you do not provide.[20]
QXPAnd We have given you means of livelihood, as well as for all whose sustenance does not depend on you.
Maulana AliAnd We have made in it means of subsistence for you and for him for whom you provide not.
Free MindsAnd We made for you in it a habitat, as well as those whom you are not required to provide for.
Qaribullah and there appointed for you is a livelihood, and for those you do not provide.

George SaleAnd we have provided therein necessaries of life for you, and for him whom ye do not sustain.
JM RodwellAnd We have provided therein sustenance for you, and for the creatures which not ye sustain:

Asadand provided thereon means of livelihood for you [O men] as well as for all [living beings] whose sustenance does not depend on you.'



al-Hijr 015:021

15:21 وان من شئ الا عندنا خزائنه وماننزله الا بقدر معلوم


TransliterationWa-in min shay-in illa AAindana khaza-inuhu wama nunazziluhu illa biqadarin maAAloomin
LiteralAnd that (there is not) from a thing, except at Us (is) its safes (treasures) , and We do not descent it except with (a) known measure/quantity .

Yusuf AliAnd there is not a thing but its (sources and) treasures (inexhaustible) are with Us; but We only send down thereof in due and ascertainable measures.
PickthalAnd there is not a thing but with Us are the stores thereof. And we send it not down save in appointed measure.
Arberry Naught is there, but its treasuries are with Us, and We send it not down but in a known measure.
ShakirAnd there is not a thing but with Us are the treasures of it, and We do not send it down but in a known measure.
SarwarWith Us is the source of everything and We do not send it down except in a known quantity.
KhalifaThere is nothing that we do not own infinite amounts thereof. But we send it down in precise measure.
Hilali/KhanAnd there is not a thing, but with Us are the stores thereof. And We send it not down except in a known measure.
H/K/SaheehAnd there is not a thing but that with Us are its depositories, and We do not send it down except according to a known measure.
MalikThere is nothing which is not in Our inexhaustible treasure and sent down in appropriate measure.[21]
QXPAnd there is not a thing but with Us are the treasures thereof. And We send it down but in precise measure.
Maulana AliAnd there is not a thing but with Us are the treasures of it, and We send it not down but in a known measure.
Free MindsAnd there is not a thing, except that We have vaults of it, yet We only send it down in a measured amount.
Qaribullah And there is not a thing but with Us are its treasuries, and We do not send it down except in a known measure.

George SaleThere is no one thing but the store-houses thereof are in our hands; and We distribute not the same otherwise than in a determinate measure.
JM RodwellAnd no one thing is there, but with Us are its storehouses; and We send it not down but in settled measure:

AsadFor, no single thing exists that does not have its source with Us;` and nought do We bestow from on high unless it be in accordance with a measure well-defined."



al-Hijr 015:022

15:22 وارسلنا الرياح لواقح فانزلنا من السماء ماء فاسقيناكموه وماانتم له بخازنين


TransliterationWaarsalna alrriyaha lawaqiha faanzalna mina alssama-i maan faasqaynakumoohu wama antum lahu bikhazineena
LiteralAnd We sent the winds/breezes (as) pollinators , so We descended from the sky water, so We gave it to you to drink, and you are not for it with storing.

Yusuf AliAnd We send the fecundating winds, then cause the rain to descend from the sky, therewith providing you with water (in abundance), though ye are not the guardians of its stores.
PickthalAnd We send the winds fertilising, and cause water to descend from the sky, and give it you to drink. It is not ye who are the holders of the store thereof.
Arberry And We loose the winds fertilising, and We send down out of heaven water, then We give it to you to drink, and you are not its treasurers.
ShakirAnd We send the winds fertilizing, then send down water from the cloud so We give it to you to drink of, nor is it you who store it up.
SarwarWe send impregnating winds and send down water from the sky for you to drink and you have no (control over its) storage.
KhalifaAnd we send the winds as pollinators, and cause water to come down from the sky for you to drink. Otherwise, you could not keep it palatable.
Hilali/KhanAnd We send the winds fertilizing (to fill heavily the clouds with water), then caused the water (rain) to descend from the sky, and We gave it to you to drink, and it is not you who are the owners of its stores (i.e. to give water to whom you like or to withhold it from whom you like).
H/K/SaheehAnd We have sent the fertilizing winds and sent down water from the sky and given you drink from it. And you are not its retainers.
MalikWe send the fertilizing winds and send down water from the sky for you to drink; it is not you who hold the storage of this wealth.[22]
QXPAnd We send the winds as pollinators that fertilize plants, and cause water to come down from the height for you to drink. Who holds the stores of the Universe? You don't. (51:41).
Maulana AliAnd We send the winds fertilizing, then send down water from the clouds, so We give it to you to drink; not is it you who store it up.
Free MindsAnd We have sent the winds to pollinate, and We sent down water from the sky for you to drink. And it is not you who are keeping it in storage.
Qaribullah We send the winds fertilizing, and We send down out of heaven water, from which you drink and you are not its treasurers.

George SaleWe also send the winds driving the pregnant clouds, and We send down from heaven water, whereof We give you to drink, and which ye keep not in store.
JM RodwellAnd We send forth the fertilising winds, and cause the rain to come down from the heaven, and give you to drink of it; and it is not ye who are its storers:

AsadAnd We let loose the winds to fertilize [plants] 2' and We send down water from the skies and let you drink thereof: and it is not you who dispose of its source-



al-Hijr 015:023

15:23 وانا لنحن نحيي ونميت ونحن الوارثون


TransliterationWa-inna lanahnu nuhyee wanumeetu wanahnu alwarithoona
LiteralAnd that We, We are (E), We revive/make life and We make die, and We are the heirs/inheritants.

Yusuf AliAnd verily, it is We Who give life, and Who give death: it is We Who remain inheritors (after all else passes away).
PickthalLo! and it is We, even We, Who quicken and give death, and We are the Inheritor.
Arberry It is We who give life, and make to die, and it is We who are the inheritors.
ShakirAnd most surely We bring to life and cause to die and We are the heirs.
SarwarIt is We who give life and cause things to die and We are the sole Heirs.
KhalifaIt is we who control life and death, and we are the ultimate inheritors.
Hilali/KhanAnd certainly We! We it is Who give life, and cause death, and We are the Inheritors.
H/K/SaheehAnd indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritor.
MalikCertainly it is We who give life and cause to die, and We are the inheritors of all.[23]
QXPFor, it is We, We alone Who control the Laws of life and death, and it is We alone Who remain the Ultimate Inheritor. (Hence, Our provision must remain accessible to all (56:63-74)).
Maulana AliAnd surely it is We, Who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritors.
Free MindsAnd it is indeed We who give life and death, and We are the inheritors.
Qaribullah And surely, it is We who give life and make to die. We are the Inheritor.

George SaleVerily we give life, and We put to death; and We are the heirs of all things.
JM RodwellAnd We cause to live and We cause to die, and We are the heir of all things:

Asadfor, behold, it is We-We alone -who grant life and deal death, and it is We alone who shall remain after all else will have passed away !



al-Hijr 015:024

15:24 ولقد علمنا المستقدمين منكم ولقد علمنا المستاخرين


TransliterationWalaqad AAalimna almustaqdimeena minkum walaqad AAalimna almusta/khireena
LiteralAnd We had known the advanced from you, and We had known the delayed/lagging behind.

Yusuf AliTo Us are known those of you who hasten forward, and those who lag behind.
PickthalAnd verily We know the eager among you and verily We know the laggards.
Arberry We know the ones of you who press forward, and We know the laggards;
ShakirAnd certainly We know those of you who have gone before and We certainly know those who shall come later.
SarwarWe know the people who lived before you and those who will come into existence after you.
KhalifaAnd we fully know those among you who advance, and we fully know those who regress.
Hilali/KhanAnd indeed, We know the first generations of you who had passed away, and indeed, We know the present generations of you (mankind), and also those who will come afterwards.
H/K/SaheehAnd We have already known the preceding [generations] among you, and We have already known the later [ones to come].
MalikCertainly We have full knowledge of those who have gone before you and certainly We know those who will come later.[24]
QXPAnd, verily, We know those who passed on before you, and We know those who will come after you. (And We know those who advance in goodness and those who lag behind).
Maulana AliAnd certainly We know those among you who go forward and We certainly know those who lag behind.
Free MindsAnd We have known those who came early amongst you, and We have known those who came late.
Qaribullah We know those of you who press forward, and We know the laggards,

George SaleWe know those among you who go before; and We know those who stay behind.
JM RodwellWe know those of you who flourish first and We know those who come later:

AsadAnd well do We know [the hearts and deeds,of all human beings - both] those who lived before you and those who will come after you;2'



al-Hijr 015:025

15:25 وان ربك هو يحشرهم انه حكيم عليم


TransliterationWa-inna rabbaka huwa yahshuruhum innahu hakeemun AAaleemun
LiteralAnd that your Lord, He gathers them, that He is wise/judicious, knowledgeable.

Yusuf AliAssuredly it is thy Lord Who will gather them together: for He is perfect in Wisdom and Knowledge.
PickthalLo! thy Lord will gather them together. Lo! He is Wise, Aware.
Arberry and it is thy Lord shall muster them, and He is All-wise, All-knowing.
ShakirAnd surely your Lord will gather them together; surely He is Wise, Knowing.
SarwarYour Lord will resurrect them all; He is All-wise and All-knowing.
KhalifaYour Lord will surely summon them. He is Most Wise, Omniscient.
Hilali/KhanAnd verily, your Lord will gather them together. Truly, He is All-Wise, All-Knowing.
H/K/SaheehAnd indeed, your Lord will gather them; indeed, He is Wise and Knowing.
MalikSurely your Lord will gather them together; surely He is Wise, Knowledgeable.[25]
QXPAnd, behold, it is your Lord Who will gather all of them together. Verily, He is Wise, all-Knowing.
Maulana AliAnd surely thy Lord will gather them together. He indeed is Wise, Knowing.
Free MindsAnd it is your Lord that will gather them. He is Wise, Knowledgeable.
Qaribullah and it is your Lord who will gather them. He is Wise, Knowing.

George SaleAnd thy Lord shall gather them together at the last day; for he is knowing and wise.
JM RodwellAnd truly thy Lord will gather them together again, for He is Wise, Knowing.

Asadand, behold, it is thy Sustainer who will gather them all together [on Judgment Day]: verily, He is wise, all-knowing!



al-Hijr 015:026

15:26 ولقد خلقنا الانسان من صلصال من حمأ مسنون


TransliterationWalaqad khalaqna al-insana min salsalin min hama-in masnoonin
LiteralAnd We had created the human/mankind from black (foul mud) dry mud/clay smoothened/rotted .

Yusuf AliWe created man from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape;
PickthalVerily We created man of potter's clay of black mud altered,
Arberry Surely We created man of a clay of mud moulded,
ShakirAnd certainly We created man of clay that gives forth sound, of black mud fashioned in shape.
SarwarWe have created the human being out of pure mud-moulded clay
KhalifaWe created the human being from aged mud, like the potter's clay.
Hilali/KhanAnd indeed, We created man from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud.
H/K/SaheehAnd We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud.
MalikWe created man from sounding clay, black mud moulded into shape;[26]
QXPAnd, indeed, We created man from sounding clay, out of dark inorganic matter. (37:11).
Maulana AliAnd surely We created man of sounding clay, of black mud fashioned into shape.
Free MindsAnd We have created man from a clay hardened and shaped.
Qaribullah We created mankind from clay, molded from mud,

George SaleWe created man of dried clay, of black mud, formed into shape:
JM RodwellWe created man of dried clay, of dark loam moulded;

al-Hijr 015:027

15:27 والجان خلقناه من قبل من نار السموم


TransliterationWaaljanna khalaqnahu min qablu min nari alssamoomi
LiteralAnd the Jinn , We created him from before from (the) fire's burning wind .

Yusuf AliAnd the Jinn race, We had created before, from the fire of a scorching wind.
PickthalAnd the jinn did We create aforetime of essential fire.
Arberry and the jinn created We before of fire flaming.
ShakirAnd the jinn We created before, of intensely hot fire.
Sarwarand the jinn before (the human being) of smokeless fire.
KhalifaAs for the jinns, we created them, before that, from blazing fire.
Hilali/KhanAnd the jinn, We created aforetime from the smokeless flame of fire.
H/K/SaheehAnd the jinn We created before from scorching fire.
Malikwhile before him We had created Jinn from smokeless fire.[27]
QXPBefore humanity became civilized, (you can say that) We created the caveman from flames, i.e. with fiery disposition in self-preservation.
Maulana AliAnd the jinn, We created before of intensely hot fire.
Free MindsAnd the Jinn, We created him before that from the flames of fire.
Qaribullah and before him We created the jinn from smokeless fire.

George SaleAnd We had before created the devil of subtile fire.
JM RodwellAnd the djinn had We before created of subtle fire.

Asadwhereas the invisible beings We had created, [long] before that, out of the fire of scorching winds."



al-Hijr 015:028

15:28 واذ قال ربك للملائكة اني خالق بشرا من صلصال من حمأ مسنون


TransliterationWa-ith qala rabbuka lilmala-ikati innee khaliqun basharan min salsalin min hama-in masnoonin
LiteralWhen/if your Lord said to the angels : "That I am creating (a) human/humans from black (foul mud) dry mud/clay smoothened/rotted ."

Yusuf AliBehold! thy Lord said to the angels: "I am about to create man, from sounding clay from mud moulded into shape;
PickthalAnd (remember) when thy Lord said unto the angels: Lo! I am creating a mortal out of potter's clay of black mud altered,
Arberry And when thy Lord said to the angels, 'See, I am creating a mortal of a clay of mud moulded.
ShakirAnd when your Lord said to the angels: Surely I am going to create a mortal of the essence of black mud fashioned in shape.
SarwarWhen your Lord said to the angels, "I will create the human being out of pure mud-moulded clay.
KhalifaYour Lord said to the angels, "I am creating a human being from aged mud, like the potter's clay.
Hilali/KhanAnd (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: "I am going to create a man (Adam) from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud.
H/K/SaheehAnd [mention, O Muúammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud.
MalikRemember when your Lord said to the angels: "I am about to create a man from sounding clay, black mud moulded into shape;[28]
QXPRecall when your Sustainer said to the angels, "Behold, I am about to create a mortal man out of inorganic matter." (2:30-35), (7:11-22), (17:61), (19:21), (20:116-120).
Maulana AliAnd when thy Lord said to the angels: I am going to create a mortal of sounding clay, of black mud fashioned into shape.
Free MindsAnd your Lord said to the Angels: "I am creating a human from a hardened clay."
Qaribullah When your Lord said to the angels: 'See, I am creating a mortal from clay of molded mud.

George SaleAnd remember when thy Lord said unto the angels, verily I am about to create man of dried clay, of black mud, wrought into shape;
JM RodwellRemember when thy Lord said to the Angels, "I create man of dried clay, of dark loam moulded:

AsadAnd lo! Thy Sustainer said unto the angels: "Behold, I am about to create mortal man out of sounding clay, out of dark slime transmuted;



al-Hijr 015:029

15:29 فاذا سويته ونفخت فيه من روحي فقعوا له ساجدين


TransliterationFa-itha sawwaytuhu wanafakhtu feehi min roohee faqaAAoo lahu sajideena
LiteralSo when/if I straightened him, and I blew in him from My Soul/Sprit , so fall/land/come to him prostrating.

Yusuf Ali"When I have fashioned him (in due proportion) and breathed into him of My spirit, fall ye down in obeisance unto him."
PickthalSo, when I have made him and have breathed into him of My Spirit, do ye fall down, prostrating yourselves unto him.
Arberry When I have shaped him, and breathed My spirit in him, fall you down, bowing before him!'
ShakirSo when I have made him complete and breathed into him of My spirit, fall down making obeisance to him.
SarwarWhen it is properly shaped and I have blown My Spirit into it, you should then bow down in prostration".
Khalifa"Once I perfect him, and blow into him from My spirit, you shall fall prostrate before him."
Hilali/Khan"So, when I have fashioned him completely and breathed into him (Adam) the soul which I created for him, then fall (you) down prostrating yourselves unto him."
H/K/SaheehAnd when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration."
Malikwhen I complete his moulding and breath into him of My spirit, kneel down and prostrate before him."[29]
QXPAnd when I have perfected him in due proportion and breathed into him something of My Energy, bow before him." (That something will be the gift of free will, the ability to make decisions (76:3)).

Arberry Said He, 'What ails thee, Iblis, that thou art not among those bowing?'
ShakirHe said: O Iblis! what excuse have you that you are not with those who make obeisance?
SarwarGod asked Iblis, "What made you not join the others in prostration?".
KhalifaHe said, "O Iblis (Satan), why are you not with the prostrators?"
Hilali/Khan(Allah) said: "O Iblees (Satan)! What is your reason for not being among the prostrators?"
H/K/Saheeh[Allah] said, O Iblees, what is [the matter] with you that you are not with those who prostrate?"
MalikAllah asked: "O Iblees! What is the matter with you that you did not join those who prostrated?"[32]
QXPGod asked, "O Iblis! Why are you not with those who bowed?"
Maulana AliHe said: O Iblis, what is the reason that thou art not with those who make obeisance?

15:33 قال لم اكن لاسجد لبشر خلقته من صلصال من حمأ مسنون


TransliterationQala lam akun li-asjuda libasharin khalaqtahu min salsalin min hama-in masnoonin
LiteralHe said: "I was not to prostrate to (a) human You created him from black (foul mud) from dry mud/clay smoothened/rotted ."

Yusuf Ali(Iblis) said: "I am not one to prostrate myself to man, whom Thou didst create from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape."
PickthalHe said: I am not one to prostrate myself unto a mortal whom Thou hast created out of potter's clay of black mud altered!
Arberry Said he, 'I would never bow myself before a mortal whom Thou hast created of a clay of mud moulded.'
ShakirHe said: I am not such that I should make obeisance to a mortal whom Thou hast created of the essence of black mud fashioned in shape.
SarwarIblis replied, "I did not want to prostrate before a human being whom You have created out of mud-moulded clay".
KhalifaHe said, "I am not to prostrate before a human being, whom You created from aged mud, like the potter's clay."
Hilali/Khan(Iblees (Satan)) said: "I am not the one to prostrate myself to a human being, whom You created from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud."
H/K/SaheehHe said, "Never would I prostrate to a human whom You created out of clay from an altered black mud."
MalikHe replied: "It does not behoove me to prostrate myself to this man whom You have created from sounding clay, black mud moulded into shape."[33]
QXPHe replied, "I am not one to bow to man whom You have created from sounding clay out of inorganic matter."
Maulana AliHe said: I am not going to make obeisance to a mortal, whom Thou has created of sounding clay, of black mud fashioned into shape.
Free MindsHe said: "I am not to submit to a human You have created from a hardened clay."
Qaribullah He replied: 'I will not prostrate to a mortal You have created of clay, from molded mud. '

George SaleHe answered, it is not fit that I should worship man, whom thou hast created of dried clay, of black mud, wrought into shape.
JM RodwellHe said, "It beseemeth not me to bow in worship to man whom thou hast created of clay, of moulded loam."

Asad[Ib1Ts] replied: "It is not for me to prostrate myself before mortal man whom Thou hast created out of sounding clay, out of dark slime transmuted!"



al-Hijr 015:034

15:34 قال فاخرج منها فانك رجيم


TransliterationQala faokhruj minha fa-innaka rajeemun
LiteralHe said: "So get out from it, so that you are cursed/expelled."

Yusuf Ali(Allah) said: "Then get thee out from here; for thou art rejected, accursed.
PickthalHe said: Then go thou forth from hence, for lo! thou art outcast.
Arberry Said He, 'Then go thou forth hence; thou art accursed.
ShakirHe said: Then get out of it, for surely you are driven away:
SarwarGod told him, "Get out of the garden; you are rejected
KhalifaHe said, "Therefore, you must get out; you are banished.
Hilali/Khan(Allah) said: "Then, get out from here, for verily, you are Rajeem (an outcast or a cursed one)." (Tafseer At-Tabaree)
H/K/Saheeh[Allah] said, "Then get out of it, for indeed, you are expelled.
MalikAllah said: "Get out of here, you are accursed.[34]
QXPGod said, "Go forth then, from here! You are dismissed forthwith."
Maulana AliHe said: Then go forth, for surely thou art driven away,

al-Hijr 015:035

15:35 وان عليك اللعنة الى يوم الدين

LiteralAnd that on you (is) the curse/torture to the Judgment's Day/Resurrection Day .

Yusuf Ali"And the curse shall be on thee till the day of Judgment."
PickthalAnd lo! the curse shall be upon thee till the Day of Judgment.
Arberry Upon thee shall rest the curse, till the Day of Doom.'
ShakirAnd surely on you is curse until the day of judgment.
Sarwarand will be subjected to condemnation until the Day of Judgment."
Khalifa"You have incurred My condemnation until the Day of Judgment."
Hilali/Khan"And verily, the curse shall be upon you till the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)."
H/K/SaheehAnd indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense."
MalikThe curse will remain on you till the Day of Judgement."[35]
QXP"My rejection shall be your due until the Day of Judgment." (7:14-15).
Maulana AliAnd surely on thee is a curse till the day of Judgment.

LiteralHe said: "My Lord, so delay me to a day they be sent/resurrected/revived."

Yusuf Ali(Iblis) said: "O my Lord! give me then respite till the Day the (dead) are raised."
PickthalHe said: My Lord! Reprieve me till the day when they are raised.
Arberry Said he, 'My Lord, respite me till the day they shall be raised.'
ShakirHe said: My Lord! then respite me till the time when they are raised.
SarwarIblis prayed, "Lord, grant me respite until the Day of Judgment".
KhalifaHe said, "My Lord, respite me until the day they are resurrected."
Hilali/Khan(Iblees (Satan)) said: "O my Lord! Give me then respite till the Day they (the dead) will be resurrected."
H/K/SaheehHe said," My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected."
MalikAt this Iblees requested: "Lord! Give me respite till the Day of Resurrection."[36]
QXPSaid Iblis, "Then O My Sustainer! Grant me a respite till the Day when all shall be raised from the dead."
Maulana AliHe said: My Lord, respite me till the time when they are raised.
Free MindsHe said: "My Lord, respite me until the Day they are resurrected."
Qaribullah He said: 'My Lord, reprieve me till the Day they are raised. '

LiteralHe said: "My Lord with what You misguided/enticed me , I will decorate/beautify for them in the earth/Planet Earth, and I will misguide/entice them (E) all/all together."

Yusuf Ali(Iblis) said: "O my Lord! because Thou hast put me in the wrong, I will make (wrong) fair-seeming to them on the earth, and I will put them all in the wrong,-
PickthalHe said: My Lord! Because Thou hast sent me astray, I verily shall adorn the path of error for them in the earth, and shall mislead them every one,
Arberry Said he, 'My Lord, for Thy perverting me I shall deck all fair to them in the earth, and I shall pervert them, all together,
ShakirHe said: My Lord! because Thou hast made life evil to me, I will certainly make (evil) fair-seeming to them on earth, and I will certainly cause them all to deviate
SarwarIblis said, "Lord, because you have caused me to go astray, I shall make earthly things attractive to (people) and mislead all of them
KhalifaHe said, "My Lord, since You have willed that I go astray, I will surely entice them on earth; I will send them all astray.
Hilali/Khan(Iblees (Satan)) said: "O my Lord! Because you misled me, I shall indeed adorn the path of error for them (mankind) on the earth, and I shall mislead them all.
H/K/Saheeh[Iblees] said, "My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make [disobedience] attractive to them on earth, and I will mislead them all
MalikIblees said: "Lord! Since You let me go astray, I will make evil fair-seeming to them on earth and I will seduce them all[39]
QXPNow Iblis said, "O My Lord! Since You let me go astray, I verily shall make attractive the path of error for them in the earth. And I shall mislead them everyone."
Maulana AliHe said: My Lord, as Thou has judged me erring, I shall certainly make (evil) fair-seeming to them on earth, and I shall cause them all to deviate,
Free MindsHe said: "My Lord, for that which I have been misled by, I will make the Earth appear beautiful for them, and I will mislead them all."
Qaribullah (satan) said: 'My Lord, for Your perverting me, I shall make (matters) in the earth seem most fair to them and I shall pervert all,

George SaleThe devil replied, O Lord, because thou hast seduced me, I will surely tempt them to disobedience in the earth; and I will seduce them all,
JM RodwellHe said, "O my Lord! because thou hast beguiled me, I will surely make all fair seeming to them on the earth; I will surely beguile them all;

Asad[Whereupon Iblis] said: "O my Sustainer! Since Thou hast thwarted me, '9 I shall indeed make [all that is evil] on earth seem goodly to them, and shall most certainly beguile them-into grievous error -



al-Hijr 015:040

15:40 الا عبادك منهم المخلصين


TransliterationIlla AAibadaka minhumu almukhlaseena
LiteralExcept Your worshippers/slaves from them, the faithful/loyal/devoted.

Yusuf Ali"Except Thy servants among them, sincere and purified (by Thy Grace)."
PickthalSave such of them as are Thy perfectly devoted slaves.
Arberry excepting those Thy servants among them that are devoted.
ShakirExcept Thy servants from among them, the devoted ones.

15:41 قال هذا صراط علي مستقيم

Yusuf Ali(Allah) said: "This (way of My sincere servants) is indeed a way that leads straight to Me.
PickthalHe said: This is a right course incumbent upon Me:
Arberry Said He, 'This is for Me a straight path:
ShakirHe said: This is a right way with Me:
SarwarGod said, "The path which leads to Me is a straight
KhalifaHe said, "This is a law that is inviolable.

H/K/Saheeh[Allah] said, "This is a path [of return] to Me [that is] straight.
MalikAllah said: "This course of action is all right with Me[41]

15:42 ان عبادي ليس لك عليهم سلطان الا من اتبعك من الغاوين


TransliterationInna AAibadee laysa laka AAalayhim sultanun illa mani ittabaAAaka mina alghaweena
LiteralThat My worshippers/slaves, power/control is not for you on them (you have no power/control over My worshippers/slaves) except who followed you from the misguided/failed .

Yusuf Ali"For over My servants no authority shalt thou have, except such as put themselves in the wrong and follow thee."
PickthalLo! as for My slaves, thou hast no power over any of them save such of the froward as follow thee,
Arberry over My servants thou shalt have no authority, except those that follow thee,
ShakirSurely. as regards My servants, you have no authority ,over them except those who follow you of the deviators.
Sarwarand you have no authority over My servants except the erring ones who follow you.
Khalifa"You have no power over My servants. You only have power over the strayers who follow you.
Hilali/Khan"Certainly, you shall have no authority over My slaves, except those who follow you of the Ghaween (Mushrikoon and those who go astray, criminals, polytheists, and evil-doers, etc.).
H/K/SaheehIndeed, My servants no authority will you have over them, except those who follow you of the deviators.
Malik- you will not have any authority over My devotees except those misguided ones who follow you.[42]
QXP"Verily, you shall have no power over My servants, except those who put themselves in error and follow you."
Maulana AliAs regards My servants, thou has no authority over them except such of the deviators as follow thee.
Free Minds"For My servants, you shall have no authority over them, except those who are misled and follow you."
Qaribullah over My worshipers you have no authority, except the perverse that follow you.

George SaleVerily as to my servants, thou shalt have no power over them; but over those only who shall be seduced, and who shall follow thee.

al-Hijr 015:043

15:43 وان جهنم لموعدهم اجمعين


TransliterationWa-inna jahannama lamawAAiduhum ajmaAAeena
LiteralAnd that Hell (is) their appointment (E) all/all together.

Yusuf AliAnd verily, Hell is the promised abode for them all!
PickthalAnd lo! for all such, hell will be the promised place.
Arberry being perverse; Gehenna shall be their promised land all together.
ShakirAnd surely Hell is the promised place of them all:
SarwarHell is the promised place for them all.
Khalifa"And Hell awaits them all.
Hilali/Khan"And surely, Hell is the promised place for them all.
H/K/SaheehAnd indeed, Hell is the promised place for them all.
MalikThey will be all destined for Hell,[43]
QXP"And for all such, behold, Hell is the promised abode."
Maulana AliAnd surely hell is the promised place for them all --

Qaribullah Gehenna (Hell) will be the promise for all of them.

al-Hijr 015:044

15:44 لها سبعة ابواب لكل باب منهم جزء مقسوم


TransliterationLaha sabAAatu abwabin likulli babin minhum juz-on maqsoomun
LiteralFor it (are) seven doors/entrances, to each door/entrance from them (is an) apportioned/divided part/portion.

Yusuf AliTo it are seven gates: for each of those gates is a (special) class (of sinners) assigned.
PickthalIt hath seven gates, and each gate hath an appointed portion.
Arberry Seven gates it has, and unto each gate a set portion of them belongs.'
ShakirIt has seven gates; for every gate there shall be a separate party of them.
SarwarIt has seven gates and each gate is assigned for a certain group of people.
Khalifa"It will have seven gates. Each gate will get a specific share of them."
Hilali/Khan"It (Hell) has seven gates, for each of those gates is a (special) class (of sinners) assigned.

Malikwhich has seven gates, each gate will be assigned to a separate group from among them."[44]
QXP"With seven gates leading into it, each gate receiving its share of wrongdoers." (The Straight Path is one, while the wrong paths are numerous and each of them leads to Hell (30:30-31)).
Maulana AliIt has seven gates. For each gate is an appointed portion of them.
Free Minds"It has seven gates, for every gate will be an assigned segment from them."
Qaribullah It has seven gates, and through each gate a portion of them belong.

George SaleIt hath seven gates; unto every gate a distinct company of them shall be assigned.

Asadwith seven gates leading into it, each gate receiving its allotted share of sinners.-



al-Hijr 015:045

15:45 ان المتقين في جنات وعيون


TransliterationInna almuttaqeena fee jannatin waAAuyoonin
LiteralThat the fearing and obeying (are) in treed gardens/paradises and water springs/wells.

Yusuf AliThe righteous (will be) amid gardens and fountains (of clear-flowing water).
PickthalLo! those who ward off (evil) are among gardens and watersprings.
Arberry But the godfearing shall be amidst gardens and fountains:
ShakirSurely those who guard (against evil) shall be in the midst of gardens and fountains:
SarwarThe pious will live in gardens with streams
KhalifaAs for the righteous, they will enjoy gardens and springs.
Hilali/Khan"Truly! The Muttaqoon (pious and righteous persons - see V.2:2) will be amidst Gardens and water-springs (Paradise).
H/K/SaheehIndeed, the righteous will be within gardens and springs.
MalikThe righteous will be in the midst of the gardens and fountains of paradise[45]
QXPVerily, those who walk aright, will find themselves amidst gardens and springs.
Maulana AliSurely those who keep their duty are in Gardens and fountains.
Free MindsThe righteous will be in paradises and springs.
Qaribullah But the cautious shall live amongst gardens and fountains:

George SaleBut those who fear God shall dwell in gardens, amidst fountains.
JM RodwellBut 'mid gardens and fountains shall the pious dwell:

AsadVERILY, those who are conscious of God [shall find themselves in the hereafter] amidst gardens and springs,



al-Hijr 015:046

15:46 ادخلوها بسلام امنين


TransliterationOdkhulooha bisalamin amineena
LiteralEnter it with safety/security/peace, safe/secure.

Yusuf Ali(Their greeting will be): "Enter ye here in peace and security."
Pickthal(And it is said unto them): Enter them in peace, secure.
Arberry 'Enter you them, in peace and security!'
ShakirEnter them in peace, secure.
Sarwarand they will be told to enter there in peace and safety.
KhalifaEnter therein, peaceful and secure.
Hilali/Khan"(It will be said to them): Enter therein (Paradise), in peace and security.

Malikand it will be said to them: "Enter into these in peace and security."[46]

al-Hijr 015:047

15:47 ونزعنا مافي صدورهم من غل اخوانا على سرر متقابلين


TransliterationWanazaAAna ma fee sudoorihim min ghillin ikhwanan AAala sururin mutaqabileena
LiteralAnd We removed/pulled away what (is) in their chests (innermosts) from hatred/animosity , brothers on beds/sofas facing each other.

Yusuf AliAnd We shall remove from their hearts any lurking sense of injury: (they will be) brothers (joyfully) facing each other on thrones (of dignity).
PickthalAnd We remove whatever rancour may be in their breasts. As brethren, face to face, (they rest) on couches raised.
Arberry We shall strip away all rancour that is in their breasts; as brothers they shall be upon couches set face to face;
ShakirAnd We will root out whatever of rancor is in their breasts-- (they shall be) as brethren, on raised couches, face to face.
SarwarWe shall remove all hatred from their breasts and make them as brothers reclining on thrones facing one another.
KhalifaWe remove all jealousy from their hearts. Like one family, they will be on adjacent furnishings.
Hilali/Khan"And We shall remove from their breasts any sense of injury (that they may have), (So they will be like) brothers facing each other on thrones.
H/K/SaheehAnd We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, [so they will be] brothers, on thrones facing each other.
MalikWe shall remove all hatred from their hearts -they will become like brothers and sit on couches face to face.[47]
QXPAnd We shall remove from their hearts any sense of jealousy, rancor, rivalry and bitterness (7:43). And they shall rest as brothers and sisters, facing one another, on thrones of happiness. (56:15), (88:13).
Maulana AliAnd We shall root out whatever of rancour is in their breasts -- as brethren, on raised couches, face to face.
Free MindsAnd We removed what sadness was in their chests, they are brothers in quarters facing one another.
Qaribullah We shall remove all rancor from their hearts, and as brethren they shall recline on couches face to face.

AsadAnd [by then] We shall have removed whatever unworthy thoughts or feelings may have been [lingering] in their breasts, [and they shall rest] as brethren, facing one another [in love] upon thrones of happiness.'°



al-Hijr 015:048

15:48 لايمسهم فيها نصب وماهم منها بمخرجين


TransliterationLa yamassuhum feeha nasabun wama hum minha bimukhrajeena
LiteralHardship/fatigue does not touch them in it, and they are not with being brought out from it.

Yusuf AliThere no sense of fatigue shall touch them, nor shall they (ever) be asked to leave.
PickthalToil cometh not unto them there, nor will they be expelled from thence.
Arberry no fatigue there shall smite them, neither shall they ever be driven forth from there.
ShakirToil shall not afflict them in it, nor shall they be ever ejected from it.
SarwarNo fatigue will touch them nor will they be expelled therefrom."
KhalifaNever will they suffer any fatigue therein; never will they be evicted therefrom.
Hilali/Khan"No sense of fatigue shall touch them, nor shall they (ever) be asked to leave it."
H/K/SaheehNo fatigue will touch them therein, nor from it will they [ever] be removed.
MalikNo fatigue will touch them in there, nor will they ever be asked to leave.[48]
QXPNo weariness shall ever touch them, and never shall they lose this abode of Bliss.
Maulana AliToil afflicts them not therein, nor will they be ejected therefrom.
Free MindsNo fatigue shall touch them, nor will they be made to leave from it.
Qaribullah There, no fatigue shall smite them, nor shall they ever be driven from it. '

15:49 نبئ عبادي اني انا الغفور الرحيم

LiteralInform My worshippers/slaves, that I, I am the forgiving , the merciful .

Yusuf AliTell My servants that I am indeed the Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful;
PickthalAnnounce, (O Muhammad) unto My slaves that verily I am the Forgiving, the Merciful,
Arberry Tell My servants I am the All-forgiving, the All-compassionate,
ShakirInform My servants that I am the Forgiving, the Merciful,

MalikO Prophet! Tell My devotees that I am indeed the Forgiving, the Merciful;[49]

15:50 وان عذابي هو العذاب الاليم


TransliterationWaanna AAathabee huwa alAAathabu al-aleemu
LiteralAnd that My torture, it is the torture, the painful.

Yusuf AliAnd that My Penalty will be indeed the most grievous Penalty.
PickthalAnd that My doom is the dolorous doom.
Arberry and that My chastisement is the painful chastisement.
ShakirAnd that My punishment-- that is the painful punishment.
Sarwarand that My punishment is a painful one.
KhalifaAnd that My retribution is the most painful retribution.
Hilali/KhanAnd that My Torment is indeed the most painful torment.
H/K/SaheehAnd that it is My punishment which is the painful punishment.
Malikbut at the same time My punishment is also the most painful punishment.[50]
QXPYet, My Law of Requital dispenses a severe requital.
Maulana AliAnd that My chastisement -- that is the painful chastisement.

Qaribullah and that My punishment is the painful chastisement.

George Saleand that my punishment is a grievous punishment.

Asadand [also,] that the suffering which I shall impose [on sinners] will indeed be a suffering most grievous."



al-Hijr 015:051

15:51 ونبئهم عن ضيف ابراهيم

LiteralAnd inform them about Abraham's guests.

Yusuf AliTell them about the guests of Abraham.
PickthalAnd tell them of Abraham's guests,
Arberry And tell them of the guests of Abraham,
ShakirAnd inform them of the guests of Ibrahim:

15:52 اذ دخلوا عليه فقالوا سلاما قال انامنكم وجلون


TransliterationIth dakhaloo AAalayhi faqaloo salaman qala inna minkum wajiloona
LiteralWhen/if they entered on (to) him, so they said: "Greeting/peace ." He said: "That we are afraid/apprehensive from you."

Yusuf AliWhen they entered his presence and said, "Peace!" He said, "We feel afraid of you!"
Pickthal(How) when they came in unto him, and said: Peace. He said: Lo! we are afraid of you.
Arberry when they entered unto him, saying, 'Peace!' He said, 'Behold, we are afraid of you.'
ShakirWhen they entered upon him, they said, Peace. He said: Surely we are afraid of you.
Sarwarwho came to him saying, "Peace be with you." Abraham said, "We are afraid of you".
KhalifaWhen they entered his quarters, they said, "Peace." He said, "We are apprehensive about you."
Hilali/KhanWhen they entered unto him, and said: Salaman (peace)! (Ibrahim (Abraham)) said: "Indeed! We are afraid of you."
H/K/SaheehWhen they entered upon him and said, "Peace." [Abraham] said, "Indeed, we are fearful of you."
MalikThey entered upon them and said: "Peace be upon you!" But he replied: "Surely we are afraid of you."[52]
QXPWhen they came unto him, and said, "Peace!" He said, "Behold, We are afraid of you."
Maulana AliWhen they entered upon him, they said, Please! He said: We are afraid of you.
Free MindsThat they entered upon him, they said: "Peace." He said: "We are worrisome of you."
Qaribullah They entered to him and said: 'Peace, ' but he replied: 'We are afraid of you. '

George SaleWhen they went in unto him, and said, peace be unto thee; he answered, verily we are afraid of you:
JM RodwellWhen they entered in unto him, and said, "Peace." Verily, said he, "We fear you."

Asad[how,] when they presented themselves before him and bade him peace, he answered: "Behold, we are afraid of you!"



al-Hijr 015:053

15:53 قالوا لاتوجل انا نبشرك بغلام عليم


TransliterationQaloo la tawjal inna nubashshiruka bighulamin AAaleemin
LiteralThey said: "Do not be afraid/apprehensive, that we, we announce good news to you with (of) a knowledgeable boy (new son)."

Yusuf AliThey said: "Fear not! We give thee glad tidings of a son endowed with wisdom."
PickthalThey said: Be not afraid! Lo! we bring thee good tidings of a boy possessing wisdom.
Arberry They said, 'Be not afraid; behold, we give thee good tidings of a cunning boy.'
ShakirThey said: Be not afraid, surely we give you the good news of a boy, possessing knowledge.
SarwarThey replied, "Do not be afraid. We have brought you the glad news of (the birth) of a learned son".
KhalifaThey said, "Do not be apprehensive. We have good news for you: an enlightened son."
Hilali/KhanThey (the angels) said: "Do not be afraid! We give you glad tidings of a boy (son) possessing much knowledge and wisdom."
H/K/Saheeh[The angels] said, "Fear not. Indeed, we give you good tidings of a learned boy."
MalikThey answered: "Do not be afraid of us! We have come to you with good news of a son endowed with knowledge."[53]
QXPSaid they, "Fear not! Behold, we bring you the glad tiding of an enlightened son."
Maulana AliThey said: Be not afraid, we give thee good news of a boy, possessing knowledge.
Free MindsThey said: "Do not worry, we bring you good news of a knowledgeable son."
Qaribullah 'Do not be afraid, ' they answered. 'We come to give you glad tidings of a knowledgeable child. '

George SaleAnd they replied, fear not; we bring thee the promise of a wise son.
JM RodwellThey said, "Fear not, for of a sage son we bring thee tidings."

AsadSaid they: "Fear not! Behold, we bring thee the glad tiding of [the birth of] a son who will be endowed with deep knowledge."



al-Hijr 015:054

15:54 قال ابشرتموني على ان مسني الكبر فبم تبشرون


TransliterationQala abashshartumoonee AAala an massaniya alkibaru fabima tubashshirooni
LiteralHe said: "Did you announce good news to me on that the old age touched me so with what (do) you announce177good news to me?"

Yusuf AliHe said: "Do ye give me glad tidings that old age has seized me? Of what, then, is your good news?"
PickthalHe said: Bring ye me good tidings (of a son) when old age hath overtaken me? Of what then can ye bring good tidings?
Arberry He said, 'What, do you give me good tidings, though old age has smitten me? Of what do you
ShakirHe said: Do you give me good news (of a son) when old age has come upon me?-- Of what then do you give me good news!
SarwarAbraham asked, "Are you giving me the glad news of a son in my old age? What reason can you give for such glad news?"
KhalifaHe said, "How can you give me such good news, when I am so old? Do you still give me this good news?"
Hilali/Khan(Ibrahim (Abraham)) said: "Do you give me glad tidings (of a son) when old age has overtaken me? Of what then is your news?"
H/K/SaheehHe said, "Have you given me good tidings although old age has come upon me? Then of what [wonder] do you inform?"
MalikHe said: "Are you giving me the good news of a son when I have become old? What kind of good news you are giving?"[54]
QXPHe said, "How can you give me such glad tiding even though I have been overtaken by old age?"
Maulana AliHe said: Do you give me good news when old age has come upon me? Of what then do you give me good news?
Free MindsHe said: "What good news can you bring me when old age has come upon me? Is that your good news?"
Qaribullah He said: 'What is this, do you bring me glad tidings even though I am old? ' Of what do you give me glad tidings? '

George SaleHe said, do ye bring me the promise of a son now old age hath overtaken me? What is it therefore that ye tell me?
JM RodwellHe said, "Bring ye me such tidings now that old age hath come upon me? What, therefore, are your tidings really?"

AsadSaid he: "Do you give me this glad tiding despite the fact that old age has overtaken me? Of what [strange thing], then, are you giving me a tiding!"



al-Hijr 015:055

15:55 قالوا بشرناك بالحق فلا تكن من القانطين


TransliterationQaloo bashsharnaka bialhaqqi fala takun mina alqaniteena
LiteralThey said: "We announced to you with the good news, so do not be from the despaired/despairing."

Yusuf AliThey said: "We give thee glad tidings in truth: be not then in despair!"
PickthalThey said: We bring thee good tidings in truth. So be not thou of the despairing.
Arberry give me good tidings?' They said, 'We give thee good tidings of truth. Be not of those that despair.'
ShakirThey said: We give you good news with truth, therefore be not of the despairing.
SarwarThey said, "We have given you the glad news for a true reason so do not despair".
KhalifaThey said, "The good news we give you is true; do not despair."
Hilali/KhanThey (the angels) said: "We give you glad tidings in truth. So be not of the despairing ones."
H/K/SaheehThey said, "We have given you good tidings in truth, so do not be of the despairing."
MalikThey replied: "We are giving you true good news; you should not be of those who despair."[55]
QXPThey answered, "We have given you the glad tiding that is bound to come true. So be not of those who abandon hope!"
Maulana AliThey said: We give thee good news with truth, so be not thou of the despairing ones.
Free MindsThey said: "We have brought you good news with truth, so do not be of those in denial."
Qaribullah They replied: 'In truth we have given you glad tidings, do not be one of those who despair. '

George SaleThey said, we have told thee the truth; be not therefore one of those who despair.
JM RodwellThey said, "We announce them to thee in very truth. Be not then one of the despairing."

AsadThey answered: "We have given thee the glad tiding of something that is bound to come true.-' so be not of those who abandon hope!"



al-Hijr 015:056

15:56 قال ومن يقنط من رحمة ربه الا الضالون


TransliterationQala waman yaqnatu min rahmati rabbihi illa alddalloona
LiteralHe said: "And who despairs from his Lord's mercy, except the misguided?"

Yusuf AliHe said: "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord, but such as go astray?"
PickthalHe said: And who despaireth of the mercy of his Lord save those who are astray?
Arberry He said, 'And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord, excepting those that are astray?'
ShakirHe said: And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord but the erring ones?
SarwarHe said, "No one despairs of the mercy of his Lord except those who are in error.
KhalifaHe said, "None despairs of his Lord's mercy, except the strayers."
Hilali/Khan(Ibrahim (Abraham)) said: "And who despairs of the Mercy of his Lord except those who are astray?"
H/K/SaheehHe said, "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except for those astray?"
MalikHe said: "Who would despair of the mercy of his Lord except one who goes astray?"[56]
QXPAbraham exclaimed, "And who, other than the one in error, despairs of the Grace of his Lord?"
Maulana AliHe said: And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord but the erring ones?
Free MindsHe said: "And who would deny the mercy of his Lord except the misguided ones!"
Qaribullah He replied: 'And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord, except those that are astray?

George SaleHe answered, and who despaireth of the mercy of God, except those who err?
JM RodwellAnd who, said he, "despaireth of the mercy of his Lord, but they who err?"

Asad[Abraham] exclaimed: "And who-other than those who have utterly lost their way-could ever abandon the hope of his Sustainer's grace?"



al-Hijr 015:057

15:57 قال فما خطبكم ايها المرسلون


TransliterationQala fama khatbukum ayyuha almursaloona
LiteralHe said: "So what (is) your matter/affair/concern, you, the messengers?"

Yusuf AliAbraham said: "What then is the business on which ye (have come), O ye messengers (of Allah)?"
PickthalHe said: And afterward what is your business, O ye messengers (of Allah)?
Arberry He said, 'And what is your business, envoys?'
ShakirHe said: What is your business then, O messengers?
SarwarMessengers, what is your task?".
KhalifaHe said, "What is your mission, O messengers?"
Hilali/Khan(Ibrahim (Abraham) again) said: "What then is the business on which you have come, O Messengers?"
H/K/Saheeh[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"
MalikThen he asked: "On what expedition you have been sent, O emissaries of Allah?"[57]
QXPHe added, "And afterward what is your mission O Messengers?"
Maulana AliHe said: What is your business, then, O messengers?
Free MindsHe said: "What then is your business here, O messengers?"
Qaribullah He asked: 'Messengers, what is your errand? '

George SaleAnd he said, what is your errand therefore, O messengers of God?
JM RodwellHe said, "What is your business then, O ye Sent Ones?"

AsadHe added: "And what [else] may you have in view, O you [heavenly] messengers?"



al-Hijr 015:058

15:58 قالوا انا ارسلنا الى قوم مجرمين


TransliterationQaloo inna orsilna ila qawmin mujrimeena
LiteralThey said: "We are sent to a nation (of) criminals/sinners ."

Yusuf AliThey said: "We have been sent to a people (deep) in sin,
PickthalThey said: We have been sent unto a guilty folk,
Arberry They said, 'We have been sent unto a people of sinners,
ShakirThey said: Surely we are sent towards a guilty people,
SarwarThey said, "We are sent to a sinful people.
KhalifaThey said, "We are being dispatched to guilty people.
Hilali/KhanThey (the angels) said: "We have been sent to a people who are Mujrimoon (criminals, disbelievers, polytheists, sinners).
H/K/SaheehThey said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals,
MalikThey replied: "We have been sent to punish a criminal nation,[58]
QXPThey replied, "We are sent to a guilty people (for retribution)."
Maulana AliThey said: We have been sent to a guilty people,
Free MindsThey said: "We have been sent to a people who are criminals."
Qaribullah They replied: 'We are sent to sinful nation.

George SaleThey answered, verily we are sent to destroy a wicked people:
JM RodwellThey said, "We are sent unto a people who are sinners,

AsadThey answered: "We are sent to people lost in sin" [who are to be destroyed],



al-Hijr 015:059

15:59 الا ال لوط انا لمنجوهم اجمعين


TransliterationIlla ala lootin inna lamunajjoohum ajmaAAeena
LiteralExcept Lot's family, We are saving/rescuing them (E) all together .

Yusuf Ali"Excepting the adherents of Lut: them we are certainly (charged) to save (from harm),- All -
Pickthal(All) save the family of Lot. Them we shall deliver every one,
Arberry excepting the folk of Lot; them we shall deliver
ShakirExcept Lut's followers: We will most surely deliver them all,
SarwarOnly the family of Lot will all be saved,
Khalifa"As for Lot's family, we will save them all.
Hilali/Khan"(All) except the family of Lout (Lot). Them all we are surely going to save (from destruction).
H/K/SaheehExcept the family of Lot; indeed, we will save them all
Malikwith the exception of Lot’s (Lot's) family; we will certainly rescue them all[59]
QXP"Barring Lot's household and followers. All of whom, behold, we shall save (as Commanded).

George SaleBut as for the family of Lot, we will save them all,

al-Hijr 015:060

15:60 الا امراته قدرنا انها لمن الغابرين


TransliterationIlla imraatahu qaddarna innaha lamina alghabireena
LiteralExcept his woman (wife). We predestined/evaluated that she truly is from (E) the remaining behind.

Yusuf Ali"Except his wife, who, We have ascertained, will be among those who will lag behind."
PickthalExcept his wife, of whom We had decreed that she should be of those who stay behind.
Arberry all together, excepting his wife -- we have decreed, she shall surely be of those that tarry.'
ShakirExcept his wife; We ordained that she shall surely be of those who remain behind.
Sarwarexcept his wife who is doomed to be left behind."
Khalifa"But not his wife; she is destined to be with the doomed."
Hilali/Khan"Except his wife, of whom We have decreed that she shall be of those who remain behind (i.e. she will be destroyed)."
H/K/SaheehExcept his wife." Allah decreed that she is of those who remain behind.
Malikexcept his wife, who, Allah says, has been destined to remain with those who will stay behind."[60]
QXP"Excepting his wife. Allah has decreed that she would stay behind (due to her disobedi-ence)."
Maulana AliExcept his wife: We ordained that she shall surely be of those who remain behind.
Free Minds"Except for his wife, we have measured that she will be with those destroyed."
Qaribullah but his wife. We decreed that she should be amongst those who remain behind.

George Saleexcept his wife; we have decreed that she shall be one of those who remain behind to be destroyed with the infidels.
JM RodwellExcept his wife. We have decreed that she shall be of those who linger."

Asadexcepting only his wife, [of whom God says,] `We have ordained [that], behold, she should be among those who stay behind!' '4z



al-Hijr 015:061

15:61 فلما جاء ال لوط المرسلون


TransliterationFalamma jaa ala lootin almursaloona
LiteralSo when the messengers came (to) Lot's family .

Yusuf AliAt length when the messengers arrived among the adherents of Lut,
PickthalAnd when the messengers came unto the family of Lot,
Arberry So, when the envoys came to the folk of Lot,
ShakirSo when the messengers came to Lut's followers,
SarwarWhen the Messengers came to the family of Lot,
KhalifaThe messengers went to Lot's town.
Hilali/KhanThen, when the Messengers (the angels) came unto the family of Lout (Lot).
H/K/SaheehAnd when the messengers came to the family of Lot,
MalikSo when the emissaries came to the family of Lot,[61]
QXPWhen the Messengers came to Lot's house,
Maulana AliSo when the messengers came to Lot’s followers,
Free MindsSo when the messengers came to the family of Lot.
Qaribullah And when the envoys came to the family of Lot,

George SaleAnd when the messengers came to the family of Lot,

al-Hijr 015:062

15:62 قال انكم قوم منكرون


TransliterationQala innakum qawmun munkaroona
LiteralHe said: "That you are a disguised/unknown nation."

Yusuf AliHe said: "Ye appear to be uncommon folk."
PickthalHe said: Lo! ye are folk unknown (to me).
Arberry he said, 'Surely you are a people unknown to me!'
ShakirHe said: Surely you are an unknown people.
Sarwarhe said, "You seem to be strangers".
KhalifaHe said, "You are unknown people."
Hilali/KhanHe said: "Verily! You are people unknown to me."
H/K/SaheehHe said, "Indeed, you are people unknown."
Malikhe said: " You appear to be strangers."[62]
QXPHe said, "Behold, you are people unknown."
Maulana AliHe said: Surely you are an unknown people.
Free MindsHe said: "You are a people unknown to me."
Qaribullah he said to them: 'I do not know you. '

George Salehe said unto them, verily ye are people who are unknown to me.
JM RodwellHe said, "Yes; are persons unknown to me."

Asadhe said: "Behold, you are people unknown [here] !"



al-Hijr 015:063

15:63 قالوا بل جئناك بماكانوا فيه يمترون


TransliterationQaloo bal ji/naka bima kanoo feehi yamtaroona
LiteralThey said: "But we came to you, with what they were in it doubting/arguing."

Yusuf AliThey said: "Yea, we have come to thee to accomplish that of which they doubt.
PickthalThey said: Nay, but we bring thee that concerning which they keep disputing,
Arberry They said, 'Nay, but we have brought thee that concerning which they were doubting.
ShakirThey said: Nay, we have come to you with that about which they disputed.
SarwarThey replied, "We have come to you about the matter which the (unbelievers) have rejected.
KhalifaThey said, "We bring to you what they have been doubting.
Hilali/KhanThey said: "Nay, we have come to you with that (torment) which they have been doubting.
H/K/SaheehThey said, "But we have come to you with that about which they were disputing,
MalikThey said: "We have come to you with that concerning which these people had doubts.[63]
QXPThey answered, "Nay, we bring to you the decision of what they keep disputing with you."
Maulana AliThey said: Nay, we have come to thee with that about which they disputed.
Free MindsThey said: "Alas, we have come to you with that which they are doubting."
Qaribullah 'No, ' they replied: 'We bring you (news) of that concerning which they were doubting.

George SaleThey answered, but we are come unto thee to execute that sentence, concerning which your fellow citizens doubted:
JM RodwellThey said, "Yes; but we have come to thee for a purpose about which thy people doubt:

AsadThey answered: "Nay, but we have come unto thee with [the announcement of] something that they [who are given to evil] have always been wont to call in question,"



al-Hijr 015:064

15:64 واتيناك بالحق وانا لصادقون


TransliterationWaataynaka bialhaqqi wa-inna lasadiqoona
LiteralAnd we came/brought (to) you with the truth , and that we are truthful (E).

Yusuf Ali"We have brought to thee that which is inevitably due, and assuredly we tell the truth.
PickthalAnd bring thee the Truth, and lo! we are truth-tellers.
Arberry We have come to thee with the truth, and assuredly we speak truly.
ShakirAnd we have come to you with the truth, and we are most surely truthful.
SarwarWe have come to you for a genuine purpose and We are true in what we say.
Khalifa"We bring to you the truth; we are truthful.
Hilali/Khan"And we have brought to you the truth (the news of the destruction of your nation) and certainly, we tell the truth.
H/K/SaheehAnd we have come to you with truth, and indeed, we are truthful.
MalikWe have come to you with the Truth of Allah’s decree and we are telling you the truth.[64]
QXP"And we are bringing you the certainty (that the period of respite for your people is over). For, behold, we are indeed truthful."
Maulana AliAnd we have come to thee with the truth, and we are surely truthful.
Free Minds"And we have come to you with the truth, and we are forthcoming."
Qaribullah We bring you the truth, and indeed we are truthful.

George SaleWe tell thee a certain truth; and we are messengers of veracity.
JM RodwellWe have come to thee with very truth, and we are truthful envoys.

Asadand we are bringing thee the certainty [of its fulfilment] :4s for, behold, we are speaking the truth indeed.



al-Hijr 015:065

15:65 فاسر باهلك بقطع من الليل واتبع ادبارهم ولايلتفت منكم احد وامضوا حيث تؤمرون


TransliterationFaasri bi-ahlika biqitAAin mina allayli waittabiAA adbarahum wala yaltafit minkum ahadun waimdoo haythu tu/maroona
LiteralSo move/travel/depart at night with your family/people with portions from the night and follow their backs/ends; and no one from you (should) turn around , and proceed/complete where/when you are being ordered/commanded.

Yusuf Ali"Then travel by night with thy household, when a portion of the night (yet remains), and do thou bring up the rear: let no one amongst you look back, but pass on whither ye are ordered."
PickthalSo travel with thy household in a portion of the night, and follow thou their backs. Let none of you turn round, but go whither ye are commanded.
Arberry So set forth, thou with thy family, in a watch of the night, and follow after the backs of them, and let not any one of you turn round; and depart unto the place you are commanded.'
ShakirTherefore go forth with your followers in a part of the night and yourself follow their rear, and let not any one of you turn round, and go forth whither you are commanded.
SarwarLeave the town with your family sometime during the night. Walk behind them and let no one turn around. Proceed as you are commanded."
Khalifa"You shall take your family during the night. Stay behind them, and make sure that none of you looks back. Go straight as commanded."
Hilali/Khan"Then travel in a part of the night with your family, and you go behind them in the rear, and let no one amongst you look back, but go on to where you are ordered."
H/K/SaheehSo set out with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind them and let not anyone among you look back and continue on to where you are commanded."
MalikYou should, therefore, depart with your family during the last hours of the night and you yourself should follow them at their rear; let no one of you look back, keep on going where you are commanded to go."[65]
QXP"Go, then, with your family and followers while it is yet night. Follow them in the rear, and let none of you look back (ever to come back to this place). But proceed where you are commanded (by your Lord (11:81)."
Maulana AliSo travel with thy followers for a part of the night and thyself follow their rear; and let not any one of you turn round, and go whither you are commanded.
Free Minds"So let your family leave during the last hours of the night, and you follow just behind them, and do not let any of you look back, and go to where you are commanded."
Qaribullah Depart with your family in a part of the night and walk behind them and let none of you turn round. Go to a place where you are commanded. '

George SaleTherefore lead forth thy family, in some time of the night; and do thou follow behind them, and let none of you turn back; but go whither ye are commanded.
JM RodwellLead forth therefore thy family in the dead of the night; follow thou on their rear: and let no one of you turn round, but pass ye on whither ye are bidden."

AsadGo, then., with thy household while it is yet night, with thyself following them in the rear; and let none of you look back,' but proceed whither you are bidden."



al-Hijr 015:066

15:66 وقضينا اليه ذلك الامر ان دابر هؤلاء مقطوع مصبحين


TransliterationWaqadayna ilayhi thalika al-amra anna dabira haola-i maqtooAAun musbiheena
LiteralAnd We ordered/passed judgment to him (of) that the matter/affair/order/command, that those (people's) root/remainder (is) cut off/severed by the morning/daybreak.

Yusuf AliAnd We made known this decree to him, that the last remnants of those (sinners) should be cut off by the morning.
PickthalAnd We made plain the case to him, that the root of them (who did wrong) was to be cut at early morn.
Arberry And We decreed for him that commandment, that the last remnant of those should be cut off in the morning.
ShakirAnd We revealed to him this decree, that the roots of these shall be cut off in the morning.
SarwarWe informed him that the unbelievers would be utterly destroyed.
KhalifaWe delivered to him this command: those people are to be annihilated in the morning.
Hilali/KhanAnd We made known this decree to him, that the root of those (sinners) was to be cut off in the early morning.
H/K/SaheehAnd We conveyed to him [the decree] of that matter: that those [sinners] would be eliminated by early morning.
MalikWe informed him about this decree of Ours that the roots of the sinners of his city would be cut off by the morning.[66]
QXPAnd We revealed to Lot this decree, "The last remnant of those shall be wiped out in the morning."
Maulana AliAnd We made known to him this decree, that the roots of these should be cut off in the morning.
Free MindsAnd We made it known to him, that the seed of these people will be cut off in the morning.
Qaribullah And We made known to him this decree that the wrongdoers were to be utterly cut off in the morning.

George SaleAnd We gave him this command; because the utmost remnant of those people was to be cut off in the morning.
JM RodwellAnd this command we gave him because to the last man should these people be cut off at morning.

AsadAnd [through Our messengers] We revealed unto him this decree: "The last remnant of those [sinners] shall be wiped out in the morn."



al-Hijr 015:067

15:67 وجاء اهل المدينة يستبشرون


TransliterationWajaa ahlu almadeenati yastabshiroona
LiteralAnd the city's/town's people came cheerful/rejoicing ."

Yusuf AliThe inhabitants of the city came in (mad) joy (at news of the young men).
PickthalAnd the people of the city came, rejoicing at the news (of new arrivals).
Arberry And the people of the city came rejoicing.
ShakirAnd the people of the town came rejoicing.
SarwarThe people of the town rejoicingly
KhalifaThe people of the city came joyfully.
Hilali/KhanAnd the inhabitants of the city came rejoicing (at the news of the young mens arrival).
H/K/SaheehAnd the people of the city came rejoicing.
MalikThe people of the town came rejoicing to the house of Lot when they heard the news of those two young male visitors.[67]
QXP(As this conversation was taking place), people of the town came rejoicing in anticipation. (They thought that these Messengers would make for them permissible what Lot had been declaring non-permissible).
Maulana AliAnd the people of the town came rejoicing.
Free MindsAnd the people of the city came seeking good news.
Qaribullah The people of the city came to him rejoicing.

George SaleAnd the inhabitants of the city came unto Lot, rejoicing at the news of the arrival of some strangers.
JM RodwellThen came the people of the city rejoicing at the news-

AsadAnd the people of the city came [unto Lot], rejoicing at the glad tiding."



al-Hijr 015:068

15:68 قال ان هؤلاء ضيفي فلا تفضحون


TransliterationQala inna haola-i dayfee fala tafdahooni
LiteralHe said: "That those (are) my guests, so do not expose my faults (scandalize me)."

Yusuf AliLut said: "These are my guests: disgrace me not:
PickthalHe said: Lo! they are my guests. Affront me not!
Arberry He said, 'These are my guests; put me not to shame,
ShakirHe said: Surely these are my guests, therefore do not disgrace me,
Sarwarrushed towards the house of Lot. Lot said to them, "These are my guests. Do not disgrace me.
KhalifaHe said, "These are my guests; do not embarrass me.
Hilali/Khan(Lout (Lot)) said: "Verily! these are my guests, so shame me not.
H/K/Saheeh[Lot] said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me.
MalikLot said: "They are my guests, so do not disgrace me.[68]
QXPLot said, "Behold, these are my guests; so do not embarrass me."
Maulana AliHe said: These are my guests, so disgrace me not,
Free MindsHe said: "These are my guests, so do not embarrass me!"
Qaribullah He said: 'These are my guests; do not shame me.

George SaleAnd he said unto them, verily these are my guests: Wherefore do not disgrace me by abusing them;
JM RodwellHe said, "These are my guests: therefore disgrace me not.

AsadExclaimed [Lot]: "Behold, these are my guests: so put me not to shame,



al-Hijr 015:069

15:69 واتقوا الله ولاتخزون


TransliterationWaittaqoo Allaha wala tukhzooni
LiteralAnd fear and obey God and do not shame/disgrace me .

Yusuf Ali"But fear Allah, and shame me not."
PickthalAnd keep your duty to Allah, and shame me not!
Arberry and fear God, and do not degrade me.'
ShakirAnd guard against (the punishment of) Allah and do not put me to shame.
SarwarHave fear of God and do not humiliate me".
Khalifa"Fear GOD, and do not shame me."
Hilali/Khan"And fear Allah and disgrace me not."
H/K/SaheehAnd fear Allah and do not disgrace me."

al-Hijr 015:070

15:70 قالوا اولم ننهك عن العالمين


TransliterationQaloo awa lam nanhaka AAani alAAalameena
LiteralThey said: "And did we not forbid/prevent you from the creations all together/(universes)?"

Yusuf AliThey said: "Did we not forbid thee (to speak) for all and sundry?"
PickthalThey said; Have we not forbidden you from (entertaining) anyone?
Arberry They said, 'Have we not forbidden thee all beings?'
ShakirThey said: Have we not forbidden you from (other) people?
SarwarThey replied, "Did we not forbid you to bring anyone to your house?".
KhalifaThey said, "Did we not enjoin you from contacting anyone?"
Hilali/KhanThey (people of the city) said: "Did we not forbid you to entertain (or protect) any of the Alameen (people, foreigners, strangers, etc. from us)?"
H/K/SaheehThey said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people?"
MalikThey said: "Have we not forbidden you to plead for the rest of the world?"[70]
QXPThey answered, "Haven't we forbidden you to entertain any kind of people (who are strangers)?"
Maulana AliThey said: Did we not forbid thee from (entertaining) people?
Free MindsThey said: "Did we not forbid you from outsiders?"
Qaribullah They replied: 'Have we not forbidden you (the people of) the worlds? '

George SaleThey answered, have we not forbidden thee from entertaining or protecting any man?
JM RodwellThey said, "Have we not forbidden thee to entertain any one whatever?"

AsadThey answered: "Have we not forbidden thee [to offer protection] to any kind of people?"9 relevant notes. AL-HlJR SCRAH



al-Hijr 015:071

15:71 قال هؤلاء بناتي ان كنتم فاعلين


TransliterationQala haola-i banatee in kuntum faAAileena
LiteralHe said: "Those (are) my daughters, if you were making/doing."

Yusuf AliHe said: "There are my daughters (to marry), if ye must act (so)."
PickthalHe said: Here are my daughters, if ye must be doing (so).
Arberry He said, 'These are my daughters, if you would be doing.'
ShakirHe said: These are my daughters, if you will do (aught).
SarwarLot said, "These are my daughters if you want them."
KhalifaHe said, "Here are my daughters, if you must."
Hilali/Khan(Lout (Lot)) said: "These (the girls of the nation) are my daughters (to marry lawfully), if you must act (so)."
H/K/Saheeh[Lot] said, "These are my daughters if you would be doers [of lawful marriage]."
MalikHe said: "Here are my daughters, if you must act."[71]
QXPLot said, "Your wives, who are like my daughters, are better for you."
Maulana AliHe said: These are my daughters, if you will do (aught).
Free MindsHe said: "Here are my daughters if it is your intention."
Qaribullah He said: 'Here are my daughters; take them (in marriage), if you would be doing. '

George SaleLot replied, these are my daughters; therefore rather make use of them, if ye be resolved to do what ye purpose.
JM RodwellHe said, "Here are my daughters, if ye will thus act."

Asad[Lot] said: "[Take instead] these daughters of mine," if you must do [whatever you intend to do]!"



al-Hijr 015:072

15:72 لعمرك انهم لفي سكرتهم يعمهون


TransliterationLaAAamruka innahum lafee sakratihim yaAAmahoona
LiteralTo your life/age (an oath) that they truly are in (E) their intoxication/loss of judgment being confused/puzzled .

Yusuf AliVerily, by thy life (O Prophet), in their wild intoxication, they wander in distraction, to and fro.
PickthalBy thy life (O Muhammad) they moved blindly in the frenzy of approaching death.
Arberry By thy life, they wandered blindly in their dazzlement,
ShakirBy your life! they were blindly wandering on in their intoxication.
SarwarBy your life! In their drunkenness they were truly blind.
KhalifaBut, alas, they were totally blinded by their lust.
Hilali/KhanVerily, by your life (O Muhammad SAW), in their wild intoxication, they were wandering blindly.
H/K/SaheehBy your life, [O Muúammad], indeed they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly.
MalikBy your life, O Prophet Muhammad, they were madly blundering in their intoxication of lust![72]
QXPThe Messengers said to Lot, "They won't listen to you even if you preach them all your life." They were totally intoxicated, stumbling up and down.
Maulana AliBy thy life! they blindly wandered on in their frenzy.
Free MindsBy your life, they are in their drunkenness, blundering.
Qaribullah By your life, they wandered blindly in their dazzlement.

George SaleAs thou livest they wander in their folly.
JM RodwellAs thou livest, O Muhammad, they were bewildered in the drunkenness of their lust.

Asad[But the angels spoke thus:] "As thou livest, [O Lot, they will not listen to thee:]5' behold, in their delirium [of lust] they are but blit ly stumbling to and fro!"



al-Hijr 015:073

15:73 فاخذتهم الصيحة مشرقين


TransliterationFaakhathat-humu alssayhatu mushriqeena
LiteralSo the loud strong cry/torture raid took/punished them at sunrise.

Yusuf AliBut the (mighty) Blast overtook them before morning,
PickthalThen the (Awful) Cry overtook them at the sunrise.
Arberry and the Cry seized them at the sunrise,
ShakirSo the rumbling overtook them (while) entering upon the time of sunrise;
SarwarAn explosion struck them at sunrise.
KhalifaConsequently, the disaster struck them in the morning.
Hilali/KhanSo As-Saeehah (torment - awful cry, etc.) overtook them at the time of sunrise;
H/K/SaheehSo the shriek seized them at sunrise.
MalikSo the mighty blast overtook them at sunrise.[73]
QXPThe blast (of Our Requital) overtook them at the time of sunrise.
Maulana AliSo the cry overtook them at sunrise;
Free MindsSo the scream took them at sunrise.
Qaribullah At sunrise a dreadful Shout seized them.

George SaleWherefore a terrible storm from heaven assailed them at sun-rise:
JM RodwellSo a tempest overtook them at their sunrise,

AsadAnd thereupon the blast [of Our punishment] overtook them32 at the time of sunrise,



al-Hijr 015:074

15:74 فجعلنا عاليها سافلها وامطرنا عليهم حجارة من سجيل


TransliterationFajaAAalna AAaliyaha safilaha waamtarna AAalayhim hijaratan min sijjeelin
LiteralSo We made its highest/elevated , its lowest/bottom, and We rained on them stones of dry and hardened mud.

Yusuf AliAnd We turned (the cities) upside down, and rained down on them brimstones hard as baked clay.
PickthalAnd We utterly confounded them, and We rained upon them stones of heated clay.
Arberry and We turned it uppermost nethermost and rained on it stones of baked clay.
ShakirThus did We turn it upside down, and rained down upon them stones of what had been decreed.
SarwarWe turned the town upside-down and showered on them lumps of baked clay.
KhalifaWe turned it upside down, and showered them with devastating rocks.
Hilali/KhanAnd We turned (the towns of Sodom in Palestine) upside down and rained down on them stones of baked clay.
H/K/SaheehAnd We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay.
MalikThus We turned the town upside down and rained down on them brimstones of baked clay.[74]
QXPAnd We turned the towns upside down and showered upon them hard heated rocks.
Maulana AliThus We turned it upside down and rained upon them hard stones.
Free MindsThus We turned it upside down, and rained over them with rocks made from hardened clay.
Qaribullah We laid it (the city) upside down and rained stones of baked clay upon them.

George SaleAnd We turned the city upside down; and We rained on them stones of baked clay.
JM RodwellAnd we turned the city upside down, and we rained stones of baked clay upon them.

Asadand We turned those [sinful towns} upside down, and rained down upon them stone-hard blows of chastisement pre-ordained.s'



al-Hijr 015:075

15:75 ان في ذلك لايات للمتوسمين


TransliterationInna fee thalika laayatin lilmutawassimeena
LiteralThat in that (are) evidences/signs (E) , to the observing/scrutinizing .

Yusuf AliBehold! in this are Signs for those who by tokens do understand.
PickthalLo! therein verily are portents for those who read the signs.
Arberry Surely in that are signs for such as mark;
ShakirSurely in this are signs for those who examine.
SarwarIn this there is evidence (of the Truth) for the prudent ones.
KhalifaThis is a lesson for those who possess intelligence.
Hilali/KhanSurely! In this are signs, for those who see (or understand or learn the lessons from the Signs of Allah).
H/K/SaheehIndeed in that are signs for those who discern.
MalikSurely there are major lessons in this for those who investigate,[75]
QXPTherein verily are lessons for those who read the signs.
Maulana AliSurely in this are signs for those who take a lesson.
Free MindsIn this are signs for those who see.
Qaribullah Surely, in that there are signs for those who contemplate.

George SaleVerily herein are signs unto men of sagacity:
JM RodwellVerily, in this are signs for those who scan heedfully;

AsadVerily, in all this there are messages indeed for those who can read the signs:"



al-Hijr 015:076

15:76 وانها لسبيل مقيم


TransliterationWa-innaha labisabeelin muqeemin
LiteralAnd that it truly is with a continuing/keeping up path/means (E) .

Yusuf AliAnd the (cities were) right on the high-road.
PickthalAnd lo! it is upon a road still uneffaced.
Arberry surely it is on a way yet remaining;
ShakirAnd surely it is on a road that still abides.
SarwarThat town lies on a road which still exists.
KhalifaThis will always be the system.
Hilali/KhanAnd verily! They (the cities) were right on the highroad (from Makkah to Syria i.e. the place where the Dead Sea is now).
H/K/SaheehAnd indeed, those cities are [situated] on an established road.
Malikand this smitten town still lies right on the permanent highway on which the unbelievers travel during their business trips.[76]
QXPAnd behold, those towns (Sodom and Gomorrah) stood by a road that still exists.
Maulana AliAnd it is on a road that still abides.
Free MindsAnd it was on an established path.
Qaribullah Indeed, it is on a way which still exists.

George SaleAnd those cities were punished, to point out a right way for men to walk in.
JM RodwellAnd these cities lay on the high road.

Asadfor, behold, those [towns] stood by a road that still exists."



al-Hijr 015:077

15:77 ان في ذلك لاية للمؤمنين


TransliterationInna fee thalika laayatan lilmu/mineena
LiteralThat in that (is) a sign/evidence (E) to the believers.

Yusuf AliBehold! in this is a sign for those who believed.
PickthalLo! therein is indeed a portent for believers.
Arberry surely in that is a sign for believers.
ShakirMost surely there is a sign in this for the believers.
SarwarIn this there is evidence (of the Truth) for the believers.
KhalifaThis is a sign for the believers.
Hilali/KhanSurely! Therein is indeed a sign for the believers.
H/K/SaheehIndeed in that is a sign for the believers.
MalikIndeed there is a sign in this for the true believers.[77]
QXPVerily, herein lies a message indeed for those who believe.
Maulana AliVerily therein is a sign for the believers.
Free MindsIn that is a sign for the believers.
Qaribullah Surely, in that there is a sign for those who believe.

George SaleVerily herein is a sign unto the true believers.
JM RodwellVerily, in this are signs for the faithful.

AsadVerily, herein lies a message indeed for all who believe [in God].



al-Hijr 015:078

15:78 وان كان اصحاب الايكة لظالمين


TransliterationWa-in kana as-habu al-aykati lathalimeena
LiteralAnd if owners/company (of) the thicket/dense tangled trees were unjust/oppressive (E).

Yusuf AliAnd the Companions of the Wood were also wrong-doers;
PickthalAnd the dwellers in the wood indeed were evil-doers.
Arberry Certainly the dwellers in the Thicket were evildoers,
ShakirAnd the dwellers of the thicket also were most surely unjust.
SarwarSince the People of the Forest were unjust,
KhalifaThe people of the woods also were transgressors.
Hilali/KhanAnd the dwellers in the wood (i.e. the people of Madyan (Midian) to whom Prophet Shuaib () was sent by Allah), were also Zalimoon (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.).
H/K/SaheehAnd the companions of the thicket were [also] wrongdoers.
MalikThe people of Al- Aikah (the nation of Prophet Shu’aib) were also wrongdoers.[78]
QXPAnd the dwellers in woods (of Midyan, the people of Shoaib), were also wrongdoers.
Maulana AliAnd the dwellers of the thicket were indeed iniquitous:
Free MindsAnd the dwellers of the forest were wicked.
Qaribullah The dwellers of the Thicket were harmdoers.

George SaleThe inhabitants of the wood near Midian were also ungodly:
JM RodwellThe inhabitants also of El Aika were sinners:

AsadAND THE DWELLERS of the wooded dales [of Madyan, too,] were inveterate evildoers,



al-Hijr 015:079

15:79 فانتقمنا منهم وانهما لبامام مبين


TransliterationFaintaqamna minhum wa-innahuma labi-imamin mubeenin
LiteralSo We revenged from them that they (B) truly (the two nations) are with a clear/evident leader/example (E) .

Yusuf AliSo We exacted retribution from them. They were both on an open highway, plain to see.
PickthalSo we took vengeance on them; and lo! they both are on a high-road plain to see.
Arberry and We took vengeance on them. The two of them were upon a roadway manifest.
ShakirSo We inflicted retribution on them, and they are both, indeed, on an open road (still) pursued.
SarwarWe afflicted them with punishment. Both people had clear (divine) authority among them.
KhalifaConsequently, we avenged from them, and both communities are fully documented.
Hilali/KhanSo, We took vengeance on them. They are both on an open highway, plain to see.
H/K/SaheehSo We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway.
MalikSo We inflicted retribution on them. The ruined towns of these two nations are lying on an open road.[79]
QXPAnd so Our just Law of Requital struck them. And, behold, these both communities lived by a highway, to this day plain to see.
Maulana AliSo We inflicted retribution on them. And they are both on an open high road.
Free MindsSo, We sought revenge from them. And they were both on an open plain.
Qaribullah On them, too, We took vengeance, and they are both on a clear roadway.

George SaleWherefore We took vengeance on them. And both of them were destroyed, to serve as a manifest rule for men to direct their actions by.
JM RodwellSo we took vengeance on them, and they both became a plain example.

Asadand so We inflicted Our retribution on them. And, behold, both these [sinful communities] lived by a highway, [to this day] plain to seed'



al-Hijr 015:080

15:80 ولقد كذب اصحاب الحجر المرسلين


TransliterationWalaqad kaththaba as-habu alhijri almursaleena
LiteralAnd the forbidden's/mind's owners/company denied the messengers.

Yusuf AliThe Companions of the Rocky Tract also rejected the messengers:
PickthalAnd the dwellers in Al-Hijr denied (Our) messengers.
Arberry The dwellers in El-Hijr cried lies to the Envoys.
ShakirAnd the dwellers of the Rock certainly rejected the messengers;
SarwarPeople of Hijr rejected the Messengers.
KhalifaThe people of Al-Hijr disbelieved the messengers.
Hilali/KhanAnd verily, the dwellers of Al-Hijr (the rocky tract) denied the Messengers.
H/K/SaheehAnd certainly did the companions of Thamud deny the messengers.
MalikThe people of Hijr also denied their Messenger.[80]
QXPAnd likewise indeed, the dwellers in Al-Hijr (Thamud of Saleh) denied Our Messengers.
Maulana AliAnd the dwellers of the Rock indeed rejected the messengers;
Free MindsAnd the dwellers of the cavern disbelieved the messengers.
Qaribullah And the dwellers of Al Hijr also belied the Messengers.

George SaleAnd the inhabitants of Al Hejr likewise heretofore accused the messengers of God of imposture:
JM RodwellAnd the people of HEDJR treated God's messengers as liars.

AsadAND, [likewise,] indeed, the people of AI-Hijr51 gave the lie to [Our] message-bearers:



al-Hijr 015:081

15:81 واتيناهم اياتنا فكانوا عنها معرضين


TransliterationWaataynahum ayatina fakanoo AAanha muAArideena
LiteralAnd We gave/brought them Our verses/evidences , so they were objecting/opposing/turning away from it.

Yusuf AliWe sent them Our Signs, but they persisted in turning away from them.
PickthalAnd we gave them Our revelations, but they were averse to them.
Arberry We brought them. Our signs, and they turned away from them.
ShakirAnd We gave them Our communications, but they turned aside from them;
SarwarWe showed them miracles but they ignored them.
KhalifaWe gave them our revelations, but they disregarded them.
Hilali/KhanAnd We gave them Our Signs, but they were averse to them.
H/K/SaheehAnd We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away.
MalikWe gave them Our signs, but they ignored them.[81]
QXPAnd We gave them Our Messages, but they stubbornly turned away from them.
Maulana AliAnd We gave them Our messages, but they turned away from them:

Qaribullah We brought them signs, but they turned away.

George SaleAnd We produced our signs unto them, but they retired afar off from the same.

Asadfor We did vouchsafe them Our messages, but they obstinately turned their backs upon them-



al-Hijr 015:082

15:82 وكانوا ينحتون من الجبال بيوتا امنين


TransliterationWakanoo yanhitoona mina aljibali buyootan amineena
LiteralAnd they were carving out/cutting from the mountains houses/homes safely/securely.

Yusuf AliOut of the mountains did they hew (their) edifices, (feeling themselves) secure.
PickthalAnd they used to hew out dwellings from the hills, (wherein they dwelt) secure.
Arberry They were hewing the mountains into houses, therein dwelling securely;
ShakirAnd they hewed houses in the mountains in security.
SarwarThey would carve secure houses out of the mountains.
KhalifaThey used to carve secure homes out of the mountains.
Hilali/KhanAnd they used to hew out dwellings from the mountains (feeling themselves) secure.
H/K/SaheehAnd they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure.
MalikThey hewed their homes in the mountains for safety.[82]
QXPEven as they (with power given by Us) used to carve homes in the mountains for security.
Maulana AliAnd they hewed houses in the mountains, in security.
Free MindsAnd they used to sculpt from the mountains dwellings that were secure.
Qaribullah They hewed their dwellings out of the mountains in safety.

George SaleAnd they hewed houses out of mountains, to secure themselves.
JM RodwellAnd they hewed them out abodes in the mountains to secure them:

Asadnotwithstanding commentary on this verse. The of [God's] punish that they had been wont [to enjoy Our blessings and] to hew out dwellings from the mountains, [wherein they could live] in security" -:



al-Hijr 015:083

15:83 فاخذتهم الصيحة مصبحين


TransliterationFaakhathat-humu alssayhatu musbiheena
LiteralSo the loud strong cry/torture raid took/punished them in the morning/daybreak. 178

Yusuf AliBut the (mighty) Blast seized them of a morning,
PickthalBut the (Awful) Cry overtook them at the morning hour,
Arberry and the Cry seized them in the morning;
ShakirSo the rumbling overtook them in the morning;
SarwarAn explosion struck them in the morning.
KhalifaThe disaster hit them in the morning.
Hilali/KhanBut As-Saeehah (torment - awful cry etc.) overtook them in the early morning (of the fourth day of their promised punishment days).
H/K/SaheehBut the shriek seized them at early morning.
MalikBut the mighty blast seized them one morning, and all their labor of building their homes through carving the rocks did not avail them.[83]
QXPAnd so the blast (of Our Requital) overtook them early in the morning.
Maulana AliSo the cry overtook them in the morning;
Free MindsSo the scream took them in the morning.
Qaribullah But the Shout seized them in the morning,

George SaleBut a terrible noise from heaven assailed them in the morning:
JM RodwellBut a tempest surprised them at early morn,

Asadand so the blast [of Our punishmennt] overtook them at early morn,



al-Hijr 015:084

15:84 فما اغنى عنهم ما كانوا يكسبون


TransliterationFama aghna AAanhum ma kanoo yaksiboona
LiteralSo what they were gaining/acquiring did not enrich/suffice them from them (was of no benefit to them).

Yusuf AliAnd of no avail to them was all that they did (with such art and care)!
PickthalAnd that which they were wont to count as gain availed them not.
Arberry that they earned did not avail them.
ShakirAnd what they earned did not avail them.
SarwarOut of what they had gained, nothing proved to be of any benefit to them.
KhalifaWhat they hoarded did not help them.
Hilali/KhanAnd all that which they used to earn availed them not.
H/K/SaheehSo nothing availed them [from] what they used to earn.
MalikWe have not created the Heavens and the Earth, and all that lies between them but to manifest the Truth.[84]
QXPAnd of no avail to them was all the power that they had acquired.
Maulana AliAnd what they earned availed them not.
Free MindsWhat benefit did what they earn make for them?
Qaribullah and that which they had earned did not help them.

George SaleNeither was what they had wrought of any advantage unto them.
JM RodwellAnd their labours availed them nothing.

Asadand of no avail to them was all [the power] that they had acquired.



al-Hijr 015:085

15:85 وماخلقنا السماوات والارض ومابينهما الا بالحق وان الساعة لاتية فاصفح الصفح الجميل


TransliterationWama khalaqna alssamawati waal-arda wama baynahuma illa bialhaqqi wa-inna alssaAAata laatiyatun faisfahi alssafha aljameela
LiteralAnd We did not create the skies/space and the earth/Planet Earth and what (is) between them (B) except with the truth , and that truly the Hour/Resurrection is coming (E) so forgive/pardon the forgiveness/pardon, the beautiful/graceful .

Yusuf AliWe created not the heavens, the earth, and all between them, but for just ends. And the Hour is surely coming (when this will be manifest). So overlook (any human faults) with gracious forgiveness.
PickthalWe created not the heavens and the earth and all that is between them save with truth, and lo! the Hour is surely coming. So forgive, (O Muhammad), with a gracious forgiveness.
Arberry We created not the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, save in truth. Surely the Hour is coming; so pardon thou, with a gracious pardoning.
ShakirAnd We did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them two but in truth; and the hour is most surely coming, so turn away with kindly forgiveness.
SarwarWe have created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, for a genuine purpose. The Day of Judgment will certainly approach, so (Muhammad) forgive them graciously.
KhalifaWe did not create the heavens and the earth, and everything between them, except for a specific purpose. The end of the world will come, so treat them with benign neglect.
Hilali/KhanAnd We created not the heavens and the earth and all that is between them except with truth, and the Hour is surely coming, so overlook (O Muhammad SAW), their faults with gracious forgiveness. (This was before the ordainment of Jihad holy fighting in Allahs Cause).
H/K/SaheehAnd We have not created the heavens and earth and that between them except in truth. And indeed, the Hour is coming; so forgive with gracious forgiveness.
MalikThe Hour of Doom is sure to come, so overlook their misbehavior in a gracious manner.[85]
QXPRemember, We have not created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, without Purpose. (Nations that do not fit themselves in the Divine Plan get wiped out. So shall happen to your people, (O Prophet), if they do not mend their ways). Behold, the Hour is surely coming (when you shall be victorious). So overlook their faults, and forgive them graciously. (73:10).
Maulana AliAnd We created not the heavens and the earth and what is between them but with truth. And the Hour is surely coming, so turn away with kindly forgiveness.
Free MindsAnd We have not created the heavens and the Earth and what is in between except with the truth. And the Hour is coming, so overlook their faults gracefully.
Qaribullah We did not create the heavens and the earth, and what is between them except in truth. The Hour is sure to come, therefore, forgive them with a gracious pardon.

George SaleWe have not created the heavens and the earth, and whatever is contained between them, otherwise than in justice: And the hour of judgement shall surely come. Wherefore, O Mohammed, forgive thy people with a gracious forgiveness.
JM RodwellWe have not created the heavens and the earth and all that between them is, but for a worthy end. And verily, "the hour" shall surely come. Wherefore do thou, Muhammad, forgive with kindly forgiveness,

AsadAND [remember:] We have not created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them without [an inner] truth;' but, behold, the Hour [when this will become clear to all] is indeed yet to come. Hence, forgive [men's failings] with fair forbearance:



al-Hijr 015:086

15:86 ان ربك هو الخلاق العليم


TransliterationInna rabbaka huwa alkhallaqu alAAaleemu
LiteralThat truly your Lord (is) the creator (E), the knowledgeable.

Yusuf AliFor verily it is thy Lord who is the Master-Creator, knowing all things.
PickthalLo! Thy Lord! He is the All-Wise Creator.
Arberry Surely thy Lord, He is the All-creator, the All-knowing.
ShakirSurely your Lord is the Creator of all things, the Knowing.
SarwarYour Lord is certainly the All-knowing Creator.
KhalifaYour Lord is the Creator, the Omniscient.
Hilali/KhanVerily, your Lord is the All-Knowing Creator.
H/K/SaheehIndeed, your Lord He is the Knowing Creator.
MalikSurely your Lord is the All-Knowing Creator.[86]
QXPVerily, your Lord! He is the All Knowing Creator.
Maulana AliSurely thy Lord -- He is the Creator, the Knower.
Free MindsYour Lord is the Creator, the Knower.
Qaribullah Your Lord is the Creator, the Knower.

George SaleVerily thy Lord is the creator of thee and of them, and knoweth what is most expedient.
JM RodwellFor thy Lord! He is the Creator, the Wise.

Asadverily, thy Sustainer is the all-knowing Creator of all things !



al-Hijr 015:087

15:87 ولقد اتيناك سبعا من المثاني والقران العظيم


TransliterationWalaqad ataynaka sabAAan mina almathanee waalqur-ana alAAatheema
LiteralAnd We had given/brought you seven from the doubles/strength/capacity and the Koran , the great.

Yusuf AliAnd We have bestowed upon thee the Seven Oft-repeated (verses) and the Grand Qur'an.
PickthalWe have given thee seven of the oft-repeated (verses) and the great Qur'an.
Arberry We have given thee seven of the oft-repeated, and the mighty Koran.
ShakirAnd certainly We have given you seven of the oft-repeated (verses) and the grand Quran.
Sarwar(Muhammad), We have given you the seven most repeated (verses) and the great Quran.
KhalifaWe have given you the seven pairs, and the great Quran.
Hilali/KhanAnd indeed, We have bestowed upon you seven of Al-Mathani (the seven repeatedly recited Verses), (i.e. Soorat Al-Fatiha) and the Grand Quran.
H/K/SaheehAnd We have certainly given you, [O Muúammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qurâ an.
MalikWe have given you the Seven Verses that are worthy of recitation over and over again (Surah Al-Fatiha) and the Glorious Qur'an.[87]
QXPWe have given you several examples from history that repeats itself, and We have given you this Sublime Qur'an that defines the Laws of the rise and fall of nations. (39:23).
Maulana AliAnd certainly We have given thee seven oft-repeated (verses) and the grand Qur’an.
Free MindsAnd We have given you seven of the pairs and the great Quran.
Qaribullah We have given you the seven dual (verses, Al Fatihah) and the Mighty Holy Reading (Koran).

George SaleWe have already brought unto thee seven verses which are frequently to be repeated, and the glorious Koran.
JM RodwellWe have already given thee the seven verses of repetition and the glorious Koran.

AsadAND, INDEED, We have bestowed upon thee seven of the oft-repeated [verses], and [have, thus, laid open before thee] this sublime Qur'an:



al-Hijr 015:088

15:88 لاتمدن عينيك الى مامتعنا به ازواجا منهم ولاتحزن عليهم واخفض جناحك للمؤمنين


TransliterationLa tamuddanna AAaynayka ila ma mattaAAna bihi azwajan minhum wala tahzan AAalayhim waikhfid janahaka lilmu/mineena
LiteralDo not extend/spread your two eyes to what We made spouses/couples from them enjoy with it, and do not be sad/grievous on (for) them, and be lenient/comforting/lower your wing/side (kindness) to the believers.

Yusuf AliStrain not thine eyes. (Wistfully) at what We have bestowed on certain classes of them, nor grieve over them: but lower thy wing (in gentleness) to the believers.
PickthalStrain not thine eyes toward that which We cause some wedded pairs among them to enjoin, and be not grieved on their account, and lower thy wing (in tenderness) for the believers.
Arberry Stretch not thine eyes to that We have given pairs of them to enjoy; and do not sorrow for them, and lower thy wing unto the believers,
ShakirDo not strain your eyes after what We have given certain classes of them to enjoy, and do not grieve for them, and make yourself gentle to the believers.
SarwarDo not yearn for other people's property and wives and do not grieve (that they do not believe). Be kind to the believers.
KhalifaDo not be jealous of what we bestowed upon the other (messengers), and do not be saddened (by the disbelievers), and lower your wing for the believers.
Hilali/KhanLook not with your eyes ambitiously at what We have bestowed on certain classes of them (the disbelievers), nor grieve over them. And lower your wings for the believers (be courteous to the fellow-believers).
H/K/SaheehDo not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [certain] categories of the disbelievers, and do not grieve over them. And lower your wing to the believers
MalikDo not look at the worldly wealth which We have given to different people among them, nor grieve at their condition. Leave them alone, attend to the believers in kindness,[88]
QXPSo do not even look at the worldly possessions that We have given to different people (among the deniers) and grieve not that their luxuries keep them from seeing the Truth. But lower your wing of kindness to the believers. (15:94).
Maulana AliStrain not thine eyes at what We have given certain classes of them to enjoy, and grieve not for them, and make thyself gentle to the believers.
Free MindsSo do not linger with your eyes on what We have bestowed upon some couples from them, and do not grieve for them, and lower your wing for the believers.
Qaribullah Do not stretch your eyes to that We have given pairs of them to enjoy, nor sorrow for them, and lower your wing to the believers.

George SaleCast not thine eyes on the good things which We have bestowed on several of the unbelievers, so as to covet the same; neither be thou grieved on their account. Behave thy self with meekness towards the true believers;
JM RodwellStrain not thine eyes after the good things we have bestowed on some of the unbelievers: afflict not thyself on their account, and lower thy wing to the faithful.

Asad[so] turn, not thine eyes [longingly] towards the worldly benefits which We have granted unto some 63 of those [that deny the truth]. And neither grieve over those [who refuse to heed thee], but spread the wings of thy tenderness over the believers,"



al-Hijr 015:089

15:89 وقل اني انا النذير المبين


TransliterationWaqul innee ana alnnatheeru almubeenu
LiteralAnd say: "That I, I am the warner/giver of notice, the clear/evident ."

Yusuf AliAnd say: "I am indeed he that warneth openly and without ambiguity,"-
PickthalAnd say: Lo! I, even I, am a plain warner,
Arberry and say, 'Surely, I am the manifest warner.'
ShakirAnd say: Surely I am the plain warner.
SarwarSay, "Indeed, I am simply one who warns."
KhalifaAnd proclaim: "I am the manifest warner."
Hilali/KhanAnd say: "I am indeed a plain warner."
H/K/SaheehAnd say, "Indeed, I am the clear warner"
Malikand tell the unbelievers: "Surely I am only a plain Warner."[89]
QXPSay, "Behold, I am indeed he that warns openly and without ambiguity."
Maulana AliAnd say: I am indeed the plain Wagner.
Free MindsAnd Say: "I am the clarifying warner."
Qaribullah And say: 'I am the plain warner. '

George Saleand say, I am a public preacher.
JM RodwellAnd SAY: I am the only plain-spoken warner.

Asadand say: "Behold, I am indeed the plain warner [promised by God] !-



al-Hijr 015:090

15:90 كما انزلنا على المقتسمين


TransliterationKama anzalna AAala almuqtasimeena
LiteralAs We descended on the apportioners/dividers/distributors.

Yusuf Ali(Of just such wrath) as We sent down on those who divided (Scripture into arbitrary parts),-
PickthalSuch as We send down for those who make division,
Arberry So We sent it down to the partitioners,
ShakirLike as We sent down on the dividers
Sarwar(We have given you the Quran) as We had given (the Bible) to those who divided themselves into groups
KhalifaWe will deal with the dividers.
Hilali/KhanAs We have sent down on the dividers, (Quraish pagans or Jews and Christians).
H/K/SaheehJust as We had revealed [scriptures] to the separators
MalikThis warning is like the warning which We sent down to the schismatics,[90]
QXPWe did send down punishment upon the formulators of sects, after such warnings.
Maulana AliLike as We sent down on them who took oaths,
Free MindsAs We have sent down on the dividers.
Qaribullah So We sent it down to the partitioners,

George SaleIf they believe not, We will inflict a like punishment on them, as We have inflicted on the dividers,
JM RodwellWe will punish those who foster divisions,

Asad[For, thou art the bearer of a divine writ66] such AL-HIJR SCRAH 15 as We have bestowed from on high upon those who [afterwards] broke it up into parts ,e'



al-Hijr 015:091

15:91 الذين جعلوا القران عضين


TransliterationAllatheena jaAAaloo alqur-ana AAideena
LiteralThose who made the Koran bits/divisions/enchantments .

Yusuf Ali(So also on such) as have made Qur'an into shreds (as they please).
PickthalThose who break the Qur'an into parts.
Arberry who have broken the Koran into fragments.
ShakirThose who made the Quran into shreds.
Sarwarand also divided the Quran believing in some parts and rejecting others.
KhalifaThey accept the Quran only partially.
Hilali/KhanWho have made the Quran into parts. (i.e. believed in a part and disbelieved in the other).
H/K/SaheehWho have made the Qurâ an into portions.
Malikthe one who divided their Qur’an into separate parts, believing in some and denying others.[91]
QXPNow those who cause division and sectarianism after (this Revelation), will be seen as dismembering the Qur'an.
Maulana AliThose who divided the Qur’an into parts.
Free MindsThe ones who have made the Quran obsolete.
Qaribullah who have broken the Koran into parts,

George Salewho distinguished the Koran into different parts;
JM RodwellWho break up the Koran into parts:

Asad[and] who [now] declare this Qur'an to be [a tissue of] falsehoods!



al-Hijr 015:092

15:92 فوربك لنسألنهم اجمعين


TransliterationFawarabbika lanas-alannahum ajmaAAeena
LiteralSo by/with your Lord, We will ask/question them (E) all together .

Yusuf AliTherefore, by the Lord, We will, of a surety, call them to account,
PickthalThem, by thy Lord, We shall question, every one,
Arberry Now by thy Lord, We shall surely question them all together
ShakirSo, by your Lord, We would most certainly question them all,
SarwarBy the Lord, We will hold them all responsible
KhalifaBy your Lord, we will question them all,
Hilali/KhanSo, by your Lord (O Muhammad SAW), We shall certainly call all of them to account.
H/K/SaheehSo by your Lord, We will surely question them all
MalikSo by your Lord! We will question them all[92]
QXPThem, by your Lord! We shall indeed call them to account, everyone and all.
Maulana AliSo, by thy Lord! We shall question them all.
Free MindsBy your Lord, We will ask them all.
Qaribullah so by your Lord, We will question them all

George Salefor by thy Lord, We will demand an account from them all,
JM RodwellBy thy Lord! we will surely take account from them one and all,

AsadBut, by thy Sustainer! [On the Day of Judgment] We shall indeed call them to account, one and all,



al-Hijr 015:093

15:93 عما كانوا يعملون

LiteralAbout what they were making/doing .

Yusuf AliFor all their deeds.

Arberry concerning that they were doing.
ShakirAs to what they did.
Sarwarfor what they have done.

al-Hijr 015:094

15:94 فاصدع بماتؤمر واعرض عن المشركين


TransliterationFaisdaAA bima tu/maru waaAArid AAani almushrikeena
LiteralSo uncover/declare openly with what you are being ordered/commanded, and turn away from the sharers/takers of partners (with God).

Yusuf AliTherefore expound openly what thou art commanded, and turn away from those who join false gods with Allah.
PickthalSo proclaim that which thou art commanded, and withdraw from the idolaters.
Arberry So shout that thou art commanded and turn thou away from the idolaters.
ShakirTherefore declare openly what you are bidden and turn aside from the polytheists.
SarwarPreach what you have been commanded to and stay away from the pagans.
KhalifaTherefore, carry out the orders given to you, and disregard the idol worshipers.
Hilali/KhanTherefore proclaim openly (Allahs Message Islamic Monotheism) that which you are commanded, and turn away from Al-Mushrikoon (polytheists, idolaters, and disbelievers, etc. - see V.2:105).
H/K/SaheehThen declare what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists.
MalikTherefore, proclaim publicly what you are commanded and turn away from the pagans.[94]
QXPHence, proclaim openly all that you have been commanded and disregard those who bring forth 'authorities' parallel to Him.
Maulana AliTherefore declare openly what thou art commanded, and turn away from he polytheists.
Free MindsSo proclaim what you have been commanded and turn away from those who set up partners.
Qaribullah Proclaim then, what you are commanded and turn away from the unbelievers.

George SaleWherefore publish that which thou hast been commanded, and withdraw from the idolaters.
JM RodwellProfess publicly then what thou hast been bidden, and withdraw from those who join gods to God.

AsadHence, proclaim openly all that thou hast been bidden [to say], and leave alone all those who ascribe divinity to aught beside God:



al-Hijr 015:095

15:95 انا كفيناك المستهزئين


TransliterationInna kafaynaka almustahzi-eena
LiteralThat We truly make you sufficient (protect you) against the mocking/making fun.

Yusuf AliFor sufficient are We unto thee against those who scoff,-
PickthalLo! We defend thee from the scoffers,
Arberry We suffice thee against the mockers,
ShakirSurely We will suffice you against the scoffers
SarwarWe shall help you against those who mock you
KhalifaWe will spare you the mockers,
Hilali/KhanTruly! We will suffice you against the scoffers.
H/K/SaheehIndeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers
MalikSurely We Ourself will suffice you against the scoffers;[95]
QXPVerily, We shall suffice you against all who deride this Message,
Maulana AliSurely We are sufficient for thee against the scoffers --
Free MindsWe will relieve you from those who mocked.
Qaribullah We suffice you against those who mock,

George SaleWe will surely take thy part against the scoffers,
JM RodwellVerily, We will maintain thy cause against those who deride thee,

Asadverily, We shall suffice thee against all who [now] deride [this message - all]



al-Hijr 015:096

15:96 الذين يجعلون مع الله الها اخر فسوف يعلمون


TransliterationAllatheena yajAAaloona maAAa Allahi ilahan akhara fasawfa yaAAlamoona
LiteralThose who create/put with God another god, so they will/shall know.

Yusuf AliThose who adopt, with Allah, another god: but soon will they come to know.
PickthalWho set some other god along with Allah. But they will come to know.
Arberry even against those who set up with God another god. Certainly they will soon know!
ShakirThose who set up another god with Allah; so they shall soon know.
Sarwarand believe other things to be equal to God. They will soon know the truth.
Khalifawho set up another god beside GOD. They will surely find out.
Hilali/KhanWho set up along with Allah another ilah (god), they will come to know.
H/K/SaheehWho make [equal] with Allah another deity. But they are going to know.
Malikthose who place other deities alongside Allah, will soon come to know their folly.[96]
QXPAnd set up, side by side, parallel 'authorities.'
Maulana AliThose who set up another god with Allah; so they will come to know.
Free MindsThose who placed with God another god. They will come to know.
Qaribullah and those who set up other gods with Allah, indeed, they will soon know.

George Salewho associate with God another god; they shall surely know their folly.
JM RodwellWho set up gods with God: and at last shall they know their folly.

Asadwho assert that there are, side by side with God, other divine powers as well:b9 for in time they will come to know [the truth].



al-Hijr 015:097

15:97 ولقد نعلم انك يضيق صدرك بما يقولون


TransliterationWalaqad naAAlamu annaka yadeequ sadruka bima yaqooloona
LiteralAnd We had know (known) that you, your chest (innermost) narrows/tightens becuase (of) what they say.

Yusuf AliWe do indeed know how thy heart is distressed at what they say.
PickthalWell know We that thy bosom is oppressed by what they say,
Arberry We know indeed thy breast is straitened by the things they say.
ShakirAnd surely We know that your breast straitens at what they say;
SarwarWe certainly know that you feel sad about what they say against you.
KhalifaWe know full well that you may be annoyed by their utterances.
Hilali/KhanIndeed, We know that your breast is straitened at what they say.
H/K/SaheehAnd We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say.
MalikWe know that your heart is distressed by what they say against you.[97]
QXPAnd well do We know that your heart is distressed by what they say.
Maulana AliAnd We know indeed that thy breast straitens at what they say;
Free MindsAnd We know that your chest is strained by what they say.
Qaribullah Indeed, We know your chest is straitened by that they say.

George SaleAnd now We well know that thou art deeply concerned on account of that which they say:
JM RodwellNow know We that thy heart is distressed at what they say:

AsadAnd well do We know that thy bosom is constricted by the [blasphemous] things that they say:



al-Hijr 015:098

15:98 فسبح بحمد ربك وكن من الساجدين


TransliterationFasabbih bihamdi rabbika wakun mina alssajideena
LiteralSo praise/glorify with your Lord's praise/gratitude/thanks, and be from the prostrating.

Yusuf AliBut celebrate the praises of thy Lord, and be of those who prostrate themselves in adoration.
PickthalBut hymn the praise of thy Lord, and be of those who make prostration (unto Him).
Arberry Proclaim thy Lord's praise, and be of those that bow,
ShakirTherefore celebrate the praise of your Lord, and be of those who make obeisance.
SarwarGlorify and praise your Lord and be with those who prostrate themselves before God.
KhalifaYou shall sing the praises of your Lord, and be with the prostrators.
Hilali/KhanSo glorify the praises of your Lord and be of those who prostrate themselves (to Him).
H/K/SaheehSo exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate [to Him].
MalikThe cure of your heart’s distress is that you should celebrate the praises of your Lord and be of those who prostrate themselves before Him,[98]
QXPBut extol you your Sustainer. Strive in your Mission so that they see that the Giver of such magnificent Guidance is indeed Praiseworthy. Be you among the foremost to adore Him.
Maulana AliSo celebrate the praise of thy Lord, and be of those who make obeisance.
Free MindsSo glorify with the praise of your Lord, and be of those who prostrate.
Qaribullah Exalt with the praise of your Lord and be one of those who prostrate.

George Salebut do thou celebrate the praise of thy Lord; and be one of those who worship;
JM RodwellBut do thou celebrate the praise of thy Lord, and be of those who bow down in worship;

Asadbut extol thou thy Sustainer's limitless glory and praise Him, and be of those who prostrate themselves [before Him] in adoration,



al-Hijr 015:099

15:99 واعبد ربك حتى ياتيك اليقين


TransliterationWaoAAbud rabbaka hatta ya/tiyaka alyaqeenu
LiteralAnd worship your Lord, until the assurance/certainty (death) comes to you. 179

Yusuf AliAnd serve thy Lord until there come unto thee the Hour that is Certain.
PickthalAnd serve thy Lord till the Inevitable cometh unto thee.
Arberry and serve thy Lord, until the Certain comes to thee.
ShakirAnd serve your Lord until there comes to you that which is certain.
SarwarWorship your Lord until you achieve the ultimate certainty.
KhalifaAnd worship your Lord, in order to attain certainty.
Hilali/KhanAnd worship your Lord until there comes unto you the certainty (i.e. death).
H/K/SaheehAnd worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty (death).
Malikand worship your Lord until there comes to you which is certain (death).[99]
QXPSubmit entirely to your Sustainer so that you may have conviction in the success that is forthcoming.
Maulana AliAnd serve thy Lord, until there comes to thee that which is certain.
Free MindsAnd serve your Lord until certainty comes to you.
Qaribullah Worship your Lord till the certainty (death) comes to you.

George Saleand serve thy Lord, until death shall overtake thee.
JM RodwellAnd serve thy Lord till the certainty o'ertake thee.

Asadand worship thy Sustainer till death comes to thee.'°
